Opp’n On The Backfoot Over Action Against Corruption: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said corruption is the biggest obstacle in the path of development, adding that his government’s action against corruption has led to polarisation as the opposition was struggling to respond.

Addressing a public meeting here, PM Modi said, “The biggest priority of the central government is to provide fundamental facilities to every citizen of the country and build modern infrastructure. Our government is running a campaign to provide pucca house to every poor of the country.”

The Prime Minister said, “Corruption is the biggest obstacle in the path of development. I had said from the Red Fort on August 15 that the time has come to fight decisively against corruption. As the action against corruption intensifies, polarization has begun in politics. Certain groups are forming a faction to save those facing graft charges.”

He said under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, about 2 lakh pucca houses have also been approved for the poor in Kerala and more than 1.30 lakh have been completed in the state.

The Prime Minister said the central government is working for opening at least one medical college in every district, and it will hugely benefit the youth of Kerala. “To develop modern infrastructure, the BJP govt is spending around Rs 1 lakh crore on multiple projects in Kerala,” he said.

PM Modi said ‘Azadi Ka Amritkaal’ is to work on the resolve to make India a developed nation and the people of Kerala have a big role to play in this. “Following the mantra of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas and Sabka Prayas, BJP is converting resolutions into accomplishment,” he said.

“In the entire country, wherever BJP is ruling in the states development is on the fast track. This is because of the double-engine government at the Centre and at the state. This very government can help the development of Kerala scale new heights,” he added.

He said the central government has spent around Rs 1 lakh crore on various projects in Kerala and the people in the state have started looking at the BJP with new hope.

The Prime Minister arrived in Kochi today where he will inaugurate several development projects. He will lay the foundation stone and dedicate to the nation various projects of Kochi Metro and Indian Railways worth over Rs 4,500 crore. On Friday, PM Modi will commission India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant at Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi. (ANI)

Sonali Phogat Death: Advocate Demands CBI Investigation

A letter petition has been written by an advocate addressed to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) UU Lalit seeking transfer the investigation in the Sonali Phogat death case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Advocate Vineet Jindal has written a letter to the CJI regarding the death of Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sonali Phogat during her visit to Goa.

Sonali Phogat died in Goa on August 23 under mysterious circumstances following which two men including her personal assistant who had accompanied her to the coastal state, were arrested on the charges of murder by the state police, the lawyer said.

“Therefore, by this letter petition, it is prayed to the Court to give directions to the Government of Goa to transfer the investigation of the matter from Goa police to CBI to find out if there is a larger conspiracy behind the killing of Sonali Phogat,” the lawyer urged in his letter.

“The investigation of the present killing is not limited to Goa Police only as this could be a larger conspiracy and needs to be investigated in other states, which need to be done by some agency who can investigate this matter without any obstruction or legal complications, which can be done by CBI only which is having a free hand to investigate cases without any obstruction in any state in India,” the letter added.

The letter said Phogat’s death was earlier ruled as a heart attack due to no visible injuries but the post-mortem report revealed that she had suffered “multiple blunt force injuries”.

“It was also confirmed by police officials that she was drugged by someone before her killing but the important issues are still unclear as Goa Police is yet to ascertain the motive behind Sonali Phogat’s murder and who others are involved in her killing,” the letter said.

It noted that Phogat was a BJP leader in her native state Haryana and fought assembly election on the BJP ticket.

“Sonali is also a popular star among the public, because of the statues and political engagements of Sonali Phogat, it cannot be ruled out if this killing could have some bigger conspiracy which can be found out only when the investigation is done in a larger

manner,” the letter said. (ANI)

Former AAP Leader speaks on Delhi Liquor Scam

AAP is Awash With Corruption, Liquor Scam Will Cost it Dearly

Manoj Nagpal, a former leader of Aam Aadmi Party, says only those who toe the party line blindly can prosper in the party

I joined Aam Aadmi Party in 2020 after a political vacation of six years. Before that I had worked for the BJP Youth wing until 2014. I did not feel comfortable in the BJP due to factionalism and favouritism, so I decided to join the party that emerged from the anti-corruption movement.

But soon I realised that the AAP is also awash with corruption. I resigned from each and every post on August 20th when the Deputy CM Manish Sisodia’s house was raided by CBI on allegations of his involvement in the liquor scam.

I would have resigned much earlier when my protest against allotment of license to a liquor vendor in Beriwala Bag, Subhash Nagar in April 2022 went unheard. Instead I was lured and intimidated. As per the new excise policy, the liquor vendor in my ward was ineligible for license because the shop was located within 100 meters of a temple.

When I first objected, I was told by the party that the distance is 102 meters. A coaching institute also operated nearby. People were scared of the vendor. You cannot change the sentiment just with a difference of two meters. It was illegal as it violated the policy.

We sat on a dharna in front of the liquor shop in April 2022. I had the support of women from well to do families. AAP leaders accused me of bribing the demonstrators. I met with the CM and Deputy CM but it seemed every one of them was in a hurry to get the liquor shop running. Then I moved to the High Court. It accepted my petition and ordered the administration to do a formal measurement of distance between the temple and liquor vend.

ALSO READ: The Competition To Get Delhi Drunk

I had already got it done officially and it came out to be 92 meters. Now it is to be done on court’s order. The next date of hearing is September 15th in this case. Before that the liquor scam got exposed. I could not resist the inner voice and tendered my resignation on the very same day Sisodia was raided.

This is not the lone case. You can go out and see where liquor license have been given. There are many more cases of violation. The government knew that finally Manish Sisodia will be booked for the flawed excise policy. Even Arvind Kejriwal knew this. That is why nothing was recovered from Sisodia’s house. They had managed everything in advance. The probe order from L-G was based upon a report by the Chief Secretary. This report was made under the CM’s supervision. He is a smart man. He never leaves anyone who comes in his way. Sisodia is just the next one in line who may be arrested sooner or later. But that would not change the ways of AAP leadership.

Being in the party and speaking up against it is very difficult because the leadership is expert in launching smear campaign against those who cross the party line. Yahan parikrama karne wale ki chalti hai, parakram karne wale ki nahin (Those who show spine will not be allowed to work in AAP). Common workers, volunteers and slum dwellers, who are AAP’s core voters, all are now fed up with the leadership. They are voiceless and choiceless.

This liquor scam will cost AAP in upcoming assembly elections due the internal unrest. We have seen the complete state unit of AAP switching over to BJP. In Gujarat the media was speculating around fifteen seats for AAP but now they have come to just a couple of seats.

Pakistan Floods: More Than 3MN Children At Risk

More than three million children are in need of humanitarian assistance and at increased risk of waterborne diseases, and malnutrition due to the most severe flooding in Pakistan’s recent history, according to UNICEF.

The United Nations Children’s Fund, in a statement, said it is working with Government and non-government partners to respond to the urgent needs of children and families in affected areas.
33 million people – including approximately 16 million children – have been affected by this year’s heavy monsoon rains in Pakistan, which have brought devastating rains, floods and landslides.

Over 1,100 people including over 350 children have lost their lives, and a further 1,600 have been injured. Over 287,000 houses have been fully, and 662,000 partially, destroyed. Some major rivers have breached their banks and dams overflowed, destroying homes, farms and critical infrastructure including roads, bridges, schools, hospitals and public health facilities.

“When disasters hit, children are always among the most vulnerable,” said Abdullah Fadil, UNICEF Representative in Pakistan. “These floods have already taken a devastating toll on children and families, and the situation could become even worse. UNICEF is working closely with the Government and other partners to ensure that children affected get the critical support they need as soon as possible.”

In affected areas, 30 per cent of water systems are estimated to have been damaged, further increasing the risk of disease outbreaks with people resorting to open defecation and drinking unsafe water.

There are reports of significant damage to education infrastructure as 17,566 schools have been damaged/destroyed, further jeopardizing the education of children. After two years of pandemic school closures in the last few years, children once again risk further disruption to their learning, in areas where one-third of girls and boys were already out-of-school before the crisis.

The rainfall – nearly three times the national 30-year average, and more than five times the 30-year average in some provinces, has led to the Government declaring a national emergency, with 72 districts declared ‘calamity hit’ – mostly in Balochistan and Sindh, the two worst-affected provinces, as well as in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab.

Cases of diarrhoea and water-borne diseases, respiratory infection, and skin diseases have already been reported. They affect populations which are very vulnerable – 40 per cent of children already suffered from stunting, caused by chronic undernutrition, before the floods hit. The perilous humanitarian situation is expected to continue to worsen in the days and weeks ahead as heavy rains continue in regions already underwater.

As part of the UN flash appeal to support the response, led by the Government of Pakistan – launched this week – UNICEF is appealing for USD 37 million, and aims to reach children and families in the coming months with support including lifesaving medical equipment, essential medicines, vaccines and safe delivery kits, safe drinking water and sanitation supplies, nutrition supplies and temporary learning centres and learning kits.

According to UNICEF’s Children’s Climate Risk Index (CCRI), Pakistan is a known ‘climate hotspot’ and country where children are considered ‘extremely high risk’ to the impacts of climate change, ranking 14th out of 163 CCRI-ranked countries and regions, placing Pakistan in the ‘Extremely high risk’ classification category in the Index.

Children in ‘Extremely high risk’ countries face a deadly combination of exposure to multiple climate and environmental shocks combined with high levels of underlying child vulnerability, due to inadequate essential services, such as water and sanitation, healthcare and education. (ANI)
