Supreme Court

SC Seeks Gujarat Govt’s Response On Godhra Convicts’ Bail Pleas

The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Gujarat government to file a reply on the bail pleas of some convicts in the 2002 Godhra train coach-burning case.

A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud asked the Gujarat government to file a reply on the bail pleas.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Gujarat government, said that this is not a matter of stone pelting but that a bogey with 59 passengers inside was locked which led to the death of several passengers.

Solicitor General’s response came when a senior advocate of some convicts submitted the state government has filed appeals against the Gujarat High Court order which has commuted the sentence of some convicts from the death penalty to life imprisonment.

Around 58 people lost their lives when some coaches of Sabarmati Express were torched at the Godhra Railway Station in Gujarat on February 27, 2002. The incident triggered large-scale riots in Gujarat.

A local court in 2011 convicted 31 accused and acquitted 63 people. Eleven accused were sentenced death penalty while the rest were awarded life imprisonment.

Later Gujarat High Court upheld the trial court decision to convict the 31 accused but commuted the death sentence of 11 to life imprisonment. The convicts then moved to the Supreme Court challenging the Gujarat High Court order. (ANI)

'Hind City' UAE

UAE Vice Prez Renames Al Minhad District As Hind City

The Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum renamed the Al Minhad district and its surrounding areas as ‘Hind City’ on Sunday, the official news agency of Emirates, WAM reported.

The city is divided into four zones and contains homes for UAE residents.
“The city includes four zones–Hind 1, Hind 2, Hind 3, and Hind 4–and spans an area of 83.9km,” WAM reported. The city is connected by key roadways such as Emirates Road, Dubai-Al Ain Road, and Jebel Ali-Lehbab Road.

The Al Minhad region and its neighbouring territories have been renamed ‘Hind City’ in accordance with Dubai Ruler’s directions.

Notably, this isn’t the first time something has been renamed in Dubai. Earlier in 2010, Burj Dubai was renamed as Burj Khalifa after Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi then. He passed away on May 13, 2022.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum who renamed the Al Minhad district as ‘Hind City’ is the vice president, prime minister, and minister of defence of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as well as the ruler of Dubai.

He is the third son of Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the former UAE vice president and ruler of Dubai. Following his brother Maktoum’s death in 2006, Mohammed took over as vice president and ruler.

Al Maktoum is described as “one of the world’s most prominent real estate developers. (ANI)

Pak Abetting Khalistani Movement: Commanding Officer Of Op Blue Star | Lokmarg

Pak Abetting Khalistani Movement: Commanding Officer Of Op Blue Star

Lt Gen (retd) Kuldeep Singh Brar, who played a key role in the Indian Army’s Operation Blue Star, has said that the Khalistani movement is resurging in Punjab and neighbouring Pakistan has been supporting it.

Lt Gen Brar is a veteran of the 1971 India-Pakistan war and the Liberation of Bangladesh. He was also the commanding officer of Operation Blue Star and remains on the hitlist of Khalistani terrorists. He survived an attempt on his life 10 years ago in London.
In ANI Podcast with Smita Prakash, Lt Gen Brar spoke at length about the rise of the Khalistani movement in Punjab.

“Things were very bad in Punjab in the 1980s. There was no law and order at all. The police had become a defunct force. There was a saint who arose from a village. He had such a charismatic personality that everyone accepted him like an 11th Guru called Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. He lived in a village called Rode but he went around giving his sermons. And at that stage slowly and steadily the state of Punjab started crumbling and Bhindranwale was an all powerful man. There were murders, smuggling, and banks being looted,” said Lt Gen Brar.

He said the law and order completely broke down during the time and it was Bhindranwale who had all the say.

“A DIG was killed and thrown out of Golden Temple. Police were even afraid to take any action against him. Because Bhindranwale had become like Frankenstein,” Brar said.

At the beginning of 1984, Lt Gen Brar said that the feeling was so strong during the time that they were going to declare Khalistan a separate country.

He also attributed unemployment among the youth as one of the major causes behind the movement.

“Then the movement started building up about Khalistan. At that time unemployment was high in Punjab. The youth were without jobs. Youths used to roam around with pistols in their motorcycles. There were also mini gangsters. Bhindranwale had full control of the state,” Lt Gen Brar said.

Asked about the revival of the Khalistani movement, he said, “It is horrible. I go to the UK, I go to Southall…I see Bhindranwale’s picture everywhere. What happened to our diaspora who have gone abroad? Our Indian people have gone abroad. More pro-Khalistan and all.”

On the current scenario of the Khalistani movement in Punjab, he said, “Yes there is a resurgence in Punjab of the movement. Pakistan is also assisting them. In London, Canada, America, and Pakistan all together they want a resurgence here.”

Bhindranwale was the head of the Sikh religious sect Damdami Taksal. He was killed along with his armed followers during Operation Blue Star launched by the Indian Army at the Golden Temple complex.

The Indian Army carried out Operation Blue Star in 1984 between June 1 and June 8. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, had ordered the military operation to flush out Sikh terrorists including Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who were accumulating weapons inside the premises of the Golden Temple. American counterpart Jake Sullivan at the White House

Doval’s US Visit To Focus On US-India Initiative For Critical, Emerging Tech

India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval arrived in Washington on Monday morning to attend the first formal talks on the Initiative for Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET).

Doval is scheduled to discuss the iCET with his American counterpart Jake Sullivan at the White House on Tuesday afternoon .
“iCET is the next big milestone in India-US Strategic Partnership with a simple objective to take bilateral cooperation to the next level but specifically in areas of interest to India,” an official familiar with the India-US deliberations told ANI.

The NSA is accompanied by a high-powered delegation. India’s Principal Scientific Adviser, ISRO chairman, Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister, Secretary of the Department of Telecommunications and DG, DRDO, are five high-profile members of the delegation.

There is also an industrial delegation which is scheduled to meet the US side.

iCET was first mentioned in a statement after a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden in Tokyo in 2022 on the sidelines of the Quad Leaders Summit.

In the discussions to be held at the White House, there would be sharp focus on aligning Washington and New Delhi’s strategic, commercial and scientific approaches specifically in the field of technology.

“Through iCET, India would send a message out to the broader industry that India can be a ‘trusted partner’ and that the two democracies could discuss how to build a trusted partner ecosystem between US and India where there’s free flow of R&D and other information pertaining to technology specifically,” the official said.

Tuesday’s meeting is ought to be outcome-oriented with a clear sense of achievable action points ANI has learned.

Experts say that there is a hope that both India and the United States will be able to specify priority areas of cooperation.

iCET has no explicit reference to China but the Biden administration sees technology development vis-a-vis China as a zero-sum game that the US cannot lose. iCET initiative could be one way forward.

“As China makes extremely fast progress when it comes to technology and one sees an aggressive penetration from the Chinese side across the world, if not stemmed and matched by something aggressive, the world will find it as a fait accompli…. So if one has to roll that progress back, then everybody else has to work together,” another official told ANI. (ANI)

Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter aircraft

Fighter Jet Crash MP: 2 IAF Pilots Witnessed Incident

Pilots of a Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft witnessed the accident involving another Su-30MKI and a Mirage-2000 fighter aircraft on Saturday over Morena in Madhya Pradesh.

The incident is now being probed by an Air Commodore-rank officer from the Air Headquarters in Delhi
The accident happened when the Indian Air Force’s top gun school Tactics and Air Combat Development Establishment (TACDE) was carrying out a simulated air combat exercise and the aircraft had taken off from Gwalior.

There were three fighters airborne in the area where the accident took place including two Su-30MKIs and one Mirage-2000 fighter flown by Wing Commander Hanumanth Rao Sarathi- known as one of the best fighter pilots in the Mirage-2000 fleet, Defence sources told ANI.

When the accident occurred over Morena, the pilots of the other Su-30MKI fighter witnessed the entire incident, they said.

The Air Headquarters is holding the probe into the incident which will bring out the exact details of the accident and the probe is headed by an Air Commodore from the Air Headquarters.

The accident took place when the Indian Air Force pilots were holding a close combat exercise flying at very high speeds. The Mirage and the Su-30MKIs can fly at speeds of more than 2,000 km per hour.

The TACDE is the topmost institute of the Air Force which develops all types of air combat skills in its pilots.

The Indian Air Force is famous globally for its close aerial combat skills and international forces acknowledge its prowess in this field.

The pilots were practicing close combat skills that day which is risky as the pilots fly at very high speeds. The Japanese Air Force also recently appreciated IAF aerial combat skills, the sources said.

Two Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter aircraft crashed in Morena in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday. Wing Commander Sarathi flying the Mirage 2000 aircraft during the exercise lost his life in the crash.

The ace fighter pilot was cremated yesterday in his native place Belagavi in Karnataka. His brother is also an IAF officer and was posted in an Apache helicopter squadron. (ANI)
