Leonardo Lauds Assam’s Efforts To End Rhino Poaching

Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio is quite impressed to see the Assam government’s efforts in stopping rhino poaching in the northeastern Indian state.

Taking to Instagram, the ‘Titanic’ star penned a note, applauding Assam’s accomplishment in ending the poaching of the endangered greater one-horned rhinoceros in Kaziranga National Park.
He wrote, “In 2021, the government of the Indian state of Assam set out to end the poaching of the Endangered Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros in Kaziranga National Park following the killing of around 190 animals for their horns between 2000 and 2021. In 2022, they met their goal and no rhinos were poached in the area for the first time since 1977.”

“Kaziranga National Park is home to 2,200 Greater One-horned Rhinos, which is about two-thirds of the world’s population. This triumph in India also comes with more good news, as @wwf also reports that the world population of the rare rhino soared to around 3,700 from about 200 at the turn of the 20th century,” Leonardo added.

Assam’s Kaziranga National Park (KNP) – located in the floodplains of the Brahmaputra river – is the biggest habitat for one-horned rhinos globally and draws visitors from across the globe.

In 2015 and 2016, the number of rhinos killed by poachers was 17 and 18, respectively, which subsequently declined to two in 2020 and 2021 and zero in 2022.

Leonardo is an ardent environmentalist. His work to help animals is equally extensive. Through his LDF (Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation) projects, he’s worked to protect endangered species.

Reportedly, In 2010, LDF donated USD 1 million to an innovative Nepalese conservation project to preserve the country’s wild tiger population. The LDF has also funded projects to protect the Black Rhino in Tanzania, the lowland gorilla in Central Africa, and the snow leopard in Central Asia.

The LDF also pledged USD 7 million in funds towards marine conservation initiatives at the 2014 Our Oceans conference. (ANI)

Uddhav Regretted Not Forming Alliance With BJP: Kesarkar

Uddhav Regretted Not Forming Alliance With BJP: Kesarkar

Maharashtra minister Deepak Kesarkar on Wednesday alleged that Uddhav Thackeray regretted not forming an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as he was given the bait of power for five years by the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party.

Addressing a press conference, Kesarkar said: “I myself have seen how sensitive Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been for Balasaheb Thackeray. As soon as he reached Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray said that he would resign and form an alliance with the BJP. The Prime Minister granted him the time he sought to convince his party members, but he broke his promise in the greed of becoming Chief Minister.”
He also said that Uddhav Thackeray has no right to call leaders in the Shinde faction fugitive and asked him to bring the truth before everyone.

“Even Uddhav Thackeray realised his mistake of forming an alliance with Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and parting ways with the ideology of Hindutva,” Kesarkar added.

Further in his address, he attacked Thackeray for his plea to the Election Commission (EC) via a press conference and termed it an attempt to gain “sympathy”.

“What was the need to make such a statement in public? You could have filed a petition in the Supreme Court that you have a certain demand. This is just an attempt to garner sympathy, but politics does not function on sympathies,” he said.

Uddhav Thackeray in his media address at Matoshri on Wednesday said that the Election Commission (EC) should withhold its decision on the original Shiv Sena party symbol until the Supreme Court gives its order on the disqualification of rebel MLAs.

The rebel MLAs are the leaders in the Eknath Shinde faction of Shiv Sena (Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena) who on June 20, 2022, surprised Uddhav Thackeray by fleeing to Surat in BJP-ruled Gujarat along with 11 MLAs. These MLAs were put up at a luxury hotel, which had turned into a fortress of sorts with nearly 400 policemen guarding it.

Shinde later broke his silence and said that all the MLAs remained “staunch Shiv Sainiks” and “would never betray the ideals of Balasaheb” (the Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray) for power. Later, Shinde decided to shift camp to Goa.

Shinde took oath as the Maharashtra CM on June 30, 2022, and proved his majority in the state Assembly on July 4, 2022.

Staying firm on his stand and terming Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde-led Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena faction as a ‘Traitors faction’, Uddhav Thackeray said quoting “experts” that this matter of disqualification must be taken up on priority.

“The experts also say that this is a clear matter of disqualification, so the results on the disqualification matter must be taken up first. This traitors’ faction says that they have numbers and the party belongs to them but this cannot be right as anyone can buy and form a party. We have submitted all the affidavits of our party members with ECI and I don’t believe that there are two Shiv Senas,” he said adding that they wanted to conduct the party’s presidential polls on January 23, as Thackeray’s tenure has ended, but they (UBT) have not gotten any reply from the ECI.

The ECI had frozen the bow and arrow symbol of the Shiv Sena and had allotted the ‘Two Swords and Shield symbol’ to the Eknath Shinde faction of Shiv Sena and the ‘flaming torch’ (mashaal) election symbol was allotted to the Uddhav Thackeray faction for the bypoll in Andheri East assembly constituency in November last year.

He further said that the arguments regarding the Shiv Sena symbol are now in the apex court and the Election Commission has asked the factions to submit their documents. We have submitted all the documents before ECI, he added. (ANI)

Turkey Quakes: Death Toll Crosses 16000

The death toll from devastating earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria earlier this week is now at least 16,035, CNN reported citing the authorities.

At least 12,873 people have died in Turkey, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) on Thursday. In contrast, in Syria, the total number of fatalities is at least 3,162, including 1,900 in rebel-held areas in the northwest, according to the “White Helmets” civil defense group.
CNN reported citing the official Syrian media, 1,262 people have been killed in the nation’s areas under the control of the government.

The casualty count is likely to rise as rescue operations are underway in both countries.

Turkey on Tuesday announced a three-month state of emergency in the quake-hit regions, as per the Anadolu Agency report. Turkey is observing seven days of mourning after the devastating quakes. As per the news report, over 13 million people have been affected by earthquakes.

As per the CNN report, the Syrian government has said that it has established more than 100 shelters equipped with aid supplies for those affected by the earthquake in government-controlled areas, including Aleppo, Hama, Homs, Tartus and Latakia.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan admitted to “shortcomings” in earthquake response on Wednesday. He stressed that the weather conditions have added to the magnitude of the destruction caused by the earthquake. Erdogan made the remarks during his visit near the epicentre of Monday’s earthquake.

“Of course, there are shortcomings. The conditions are obvious. It is not possible to be prepared for such a disaster. We will not leave any of our citizens uncared for,” CNN quoted Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as saying.

India is extending its support to Turkey through the ongoing crisis after earthquakes jolted the country on February 6. Earthquakes of 7.7 and 7.6 magnitudes on the Richter scale, ripped through Turkey and Syria on February 6, followed by a series of aftershocks that caused huge devastation, loss of lives and damage to infrastructure in the two countries. Pathaan’s Success Is A Fitting Response To Boycott Brigade

Pathaan’s Success Is A Fitting Response To Boycott Brigade

Satyam Shrivastava, a Delhi-based development professional, says Indian audience is fed up with the cancel culture which selectively targets a section of Bollywood

I watched the Shahrukh-starrer Pathaan a couple of days back with my family at a PVR multiplex in New Delhi. The excitement around the theatre was palpable; it was teeming with SRK fans. Despite the increased prices of tickets, there was heavy rush at the booking window. I think such a rage was seen for the first time since the reopening of cinema halls after Covid days.

It is possible that the calls to boycott the movie had sparked some kind of defiant thrill among Shahrukh Khan’s admirers. I am in no doubt that Pathaan will prove to be a ‘bounce back’ moment for Bollywood.

I had my individual reasons to watch the movie; I went there in support of Shahrukh Khan. I am sure I was not alone with the cause. The entire opposition to the movie was based on a ridiculous argument: a brief clip of Deepika Padukone wearing an orange (some saw saffron) bikini and singing Besharam Rang. Clearly, the target of the boycott brigade was Shahrukh Khan and Deepika, not the movie or the perceived vulgarity.

These two are film stars have, in their silent and subtle conduct, defied the Hindutva majoritarianism. Despite all kinds of state and non-state harassment, they have stood their ground. While Deepika made her silent presence felt in solidarity with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students, Shahrukh Khan, stoically countered a conspiratorial campaign against his son Aryan and did not line up to serve the powers that be. This had riled the Hindutva brigade no end who champion a different idea of ‘New India’.

ALSO READ: ‘Pathaan Injects A Fresh Lease Of Life In Bollywood’

Shahrukh and Deepika represent an ‘old India’ where artists were recognised by their talent and not by their surname, caste or ideology. And the movie, Pathaan stands like a non-violent resistance symbol to the boycott brigade representing a majoritarian ideology.

There are reports that many theatres have started additional slots to screen Pathaan; single-screen theatres have got the opportunity they had been long waiting for; and about the audience is going berserk when Salman Khan makes and entry. It proves that the audiences are fed up with such baseless boycott calls, and have collectively stood up to the threats by showing up in large numbers. The message is: We shall decide which movie to watch or disregard.

Pathaan is an entertaining ensemble of filmy massalas. And entertainment remains the main objective of any artwork. The film will also be a trendsetter in terms of the use of technology in Hindi cinema and pave way for making films in the same league as the Marvel Studios of Hollywood. Air fights, high-speed biking on ice, VFX footages are all very common in western cinema. Now these are being served by Bollywood too.

SC To Hear Plea Seeking Enquiry On Hindenburg Research Report On Friday

The Supreme Court will hear on Friday a plea seeking a direction to the Centre to constitute a committee under the monitoring of the retired apex court judge to inquire and investigate the Hindenburg Research report which has made a slew of allegations against the business conglomerate led by industrialist Gautam Adani with another similar petition.

Advocate Vishal Tiwari, who has filed the petition, mentioned the matter for urgent listing before a bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud today.
Advocate Vishal Tiwari submitted to the bench that a separate plea is scheduled to be listed for a hearing on February 10, which pertains to the Hindenburg report. He urged the bench that his plea be also heard on Friday along with the separate plea.

Advocate Vishal Tiwari in his public interest litigation (PIL), has sought to constitute a committee under the monitoring of the retired Supreme Court Judge to enquire about and Investigate the Hindenburg Research Report.

Advocate Tiwari in his PIL said that he wants to depict the drastic condition and fate of people when there arise situations of sharp fall in the securities market due to various reasons at hand.

“Lots of people who had a whole life-saving in such stocks get a maximum setback due to fall in such shares with a huge amount of money getting into the drain. Various instances of suicides and other life-taking incidences come up because of such huge loss of money where lifesaving of individuals are invested in,” Tiwari said.

Tiwari has also sought directions to set up a special committee to oversee the sanction policy for loans of over Rs 500 crore given to big corporates.

Last week, another PIL was filed in the apex court by advocate M L Sharma seeking a probe against the US-based firm, whose report has led to shares of Adani group plunging on the bourses.

The SC is likely to hear the plea of advocate ML Sharma, on February 10. (ANI)

Modi To Reply On 'Motion Of Thanks' In RS Today

Modi To Reply On ‘Motion Of Thanks’ In RS Today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reply to the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address at 2 pm in Rajya Sabha on Thursday during the ongoing Budget Session of the Parliament.

“Reply by the Prime Minister will be at 2 pm tomorrow,” said Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar after the last speaker spoke on the motion on Wednesday.
The debate on the motion of thanks to the President’s Address in Rajya Sabha concluded on Wednesday.

President Droupadi Murmu had addressed the joint sitting of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on January 31, the first day of the Budget Session.

In her maiden address to the joint sitting of Parliament, Droupadi Murmu while touching upon several issues in her address, including defence, space, women empowerment, and the importance of public involvement during the ‘Amrit Kaal’ to build a developed India said that the country had a government that was “stable, fearless, decisive”, working for all classes without any discrimination and giving thrust to ‘virasat’ (heritage) as well as ‘vikas’ (development). Murmu spoke of the government’s relentless fight against corruption, the “biggest enemy of democracy and social justice”.

However, the opposition criticised the President’s address.

Earlier in the day, Modi replied to the motion of thanks in Lok Sabha, saying that President gave direction to the nation in her visionary address to both Houses.

“Her address inspired the ‘Nari Shakti’ (women power) of India and gave a boost to the self-confidence of India’s tribal communities while instilling a feeling of pride among them. She gave a detailed blueprint of ‘Sankalp se Siddhi’ of the nation”, the Prime Minister said.

He also talked about the work done by his government and said that there is positivity and hope towards India at a global level and the reforms were not carried out of compulsion but by conviction.

He said India is the mother of democracy, constructive criticism is vital for a strong democracy and criticism is like a ‘shuddhi yagya’.

The Prime Minister took veiled digs at Rahul Gandhi who had made a sharp attack on the government over the Adani issue in his speech during the debate on Tuesday and said some speeches made on Tuesday were lauded by their ecosystem.

“I was watching yesterday. After the speeches of a few people, some people were happily saying, “Ye hui na baat.” Maybe they slept well and couldn’t wake up (on time). For them it has been said, “Ye keh keh ke hum dil ko behla rahe hain,wo ab chal chuke hain, wo ab aa rahe hain”,” PM Modi said.

Rahul Gandhi was not present in the House when Prime Minister made his initial remarks. He later reached Lok Sabha.

PM Modi also referred to remarks of Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury about the President for which he had later apologised.

“When Preisdent’s Address was going on, some people avoided it. A tall leader even insulted the President. They displayed hatred against ST. When such things were said on TV, the sense of hatred deep within came out. Attempt was made to save oneself after writing a letter later,” PM Modi said.

The Lok Sabha adopted the motion of thanks to the President’s address after PM Modi’s reply.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi later said that PM Modi did not answer questions pos ed to him during the debate and alleged that he was “protecting” industrialist Gautam Adani.

“I am not satisfied with the PM’s speech. However, it has revealed the truth. His speech had nothing about an inquiry (into the Adani Group in the wake of the Hindenburg report). It’s clear that the PM is protecting him (Gautam Adani),” he said.

“The PM, in his speech’ did not answer any (of his) questions. He was shell-shocked. I did not raise any difficult questions. They were simple questions that he dodged,” the Congress leader added.

Earlier during the debate, union ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad and Kiren Rijiju refuted allegations made by Rahul Gandhi.

The opposition parties kept up their demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the Hindenberg-Adani row and some MPs staged a walkout during Prime Minister’s reply.

Targeting the opposition, PM Modi said instead of constructive criticism, some people indulge in compulsive criticism.

With the opposition parties accusing the government of misusing probe agencies, PM Modi took a dig at them and said Enforcement Directorate is behind their unity.

“A lot of things were said in the House about the probe agencies. I had thought that the people of the country and the results of the elections would bring such people to one stage. But that did not happen. They should thank ED that due to it they have now come together,” he said.

PM Modi also hit back at Rahul Gandhi’s jibe that there should be a study by institutes such as Harvard of how the Adani group’s wealth had seen a steep rise under a particular government.

“Some people here have a craze for Harvard studies. During Covid, it was said that there will be a case study on the devastation in India. Over the years an important study has been done at Harvard and the subject of the study is the ‘Rise and fall of India’s Congress Party’,” he said.

“Those who are drunk in arrogance and think that only they have the knowledge, feel that only by abusing Modi will be a way out…Only through false, nonsensical mudslinging on Modi will a path be paved. It has been 22 years, and they still have a misapprehension,” PM Modi added.

The Prime Minister said that the people’s trust in him was not due to the newspaper headlines but hard work.

“Trust in Modi was not born out of newspaper headlines, not through faces on TV. (I have) given my life, every moment of mine for the people of the country, for the glorious future of the country. People’s trust in Modi is beyond their understanding,” he said.

He listed the scams and controversies during Congress-led UPA rule and said that the decade was full of scams.

“When something good happens, their sadness increases. In the history of the country’s independence, 2004-2014 was full of scams. Terror attacks took place across the country in those 10 years,” he said.

“When the technology was progressing, they were stuck in 2G. Mauka Musibat Mein. In 2010, there were the Commonwealth games which was an opportunity to present Indian youth capability but again it was Mauka Musibat Mein. The coal scam came to the fore. Nobody can forget the 2008 Mumbai attack. But they did not have the courage to attack terrorism because of which the terrorists’ morale was boosted,” the Prime Minister added.

Stepping up the attack, he said that converting every opportunity to trouble became the UPA government’s identity.

“There were terror attacks in every part of India from Kanyakumari to Kashmir. India’s capability is being recognised and people’s capabilities are coming to the fore. The country was capable earlier also but between 2004-2014, it lost that opportunity. This became the UPA’s identity, it converted every opportunity into trouble,” he said.

He said there is peace in Jammu and Kashmir and people can go easily.

“Those (referring to Rahul Gandhi who recently concluded Bharat Jodo Yatra in J-K) who came back from J-K recently must have seen how easily you can go in J-K. I too had gone on a yatra to Jammu and Kashmir with the resolve to unfurl the Tricolour at Lal Chowk. Terrorists had put up posters and said ‘Dekhte hain, kisne maa ka doodh piya hai jo Lal Chowk aake Tiranga phehra paaye,'” he said.

“That day on January 24, at a public rally, I had said, “Terrorists pay heed. On January 26, sharp at 11 am, I will reach Lal Chowk without security and a bulletproof jacket. Faisla Lal Chowk pe hoga, kisne apni maa ka doodh piya hai”. Then I unfurled the Tricolour at Lal Chowk.

“J-K has broken various records in the field of tourism after decades. The festival of democracy is being celebrated in J-K. Today, there is a successful campaign of Har Ghar Tiranga. Some people used to say that there is a danger of disruption in peace due to the Tricolour. Look at the time, even those people participated in the Tiranga Yatra,” he added. (ANI)
