Sitharaman Reviews Public Sector Banks Amid Volatility In US Banking System

Sitharaman Reviews Public Sector Banks Amid Volatility In US Banking System

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday chaired a meeting to review the performance of government-owned banks. Various financial, efficiency and health parameters in the banking sector were reviewed.

This review meet comes amid volatility in the US banking system due to the recent collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and some other banks in contagion.
For the record, prominent global lender in the world of technology startups, the Silicon Valley Bank collapsed on March 10 after a run on the bank, forcing the US federal government to step in.

Regulators shut down the tech lender and put it under the control of the US Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). Currently, the FDIC is acting as a receiver, which typically means it will liquidate the bank’s assets to pay back its customers, including depositors and creditors.

“Union Finance Minister Smt. @nsitharaman chairs the meeting to review performance of Public Sector Banks #PSBs on various financial, efficiency and health parameters,” Ministry of Finance tweeted.

“The meeting is also being attended by Union Minister of State for Finance Dr @DrBhagwatKarad, Secretary @DFS_India, Chairman @TheOfficialSBI and MDs & CEOs of Public Sector Banks.”

Notably, a number of Indian startups have funds parked in the failed US-based Silicon Valley Bank, and possibly others too.

Earlier, emphasising that the Indian banking system is resilient and strong amid the Silicon Valley Bank-led crisis in the US banking system, Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar had said startups should opt for Indian banks as their preferred partners.

Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Chandrasekhar had said special provisions available at Gift City in Gujarat can be quick and impactful support for Indian startups.

The MoS had also said a transfer of bank deposits worth over USD 200 million was already made into GIFT City, Gujarat, which according to him was a sign of the Indian banking system’s growing prominence. (ANI)

Not Scared Of Disqualification, Prison Sentences: Rahul

Not Scared Of Disqualification, Prison Sentences: Rahul

A day after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha, he said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi led Central government was scared of his questions on Adani and that democracy was under attack.

Stating that he was not scared of threats, disqualification and prison sentences, Rahul Gandhi said that he will not “back down” from asking questions on the Adani stocks issue.
He was addressing his first press conference after being disqualified from the Lok Sabha after a Surat court convicted him in a 2019 criminal defamation case.

While addressing the mediapersons, Gandhi said, “This is the whole drama that is been orchestrated to defend the Prime Minister from the simple question- Who’s Rs 20,000 crore went to Adani’s shell companies? I am not scared of these threats, disqualifications or prison sentences.”

He stated, “I am not interested in anything but the truth. I only speak the truth, it is my work and I will keep doing it even if I get disqualified or get arrested. This country has given me everything and that is why I do this.”

The Congress leader stated, “I will keep asking questions on Adani issue, they cannot scare me by disqualification or putting me in jail. I won’t back down.”

He alleged that his speech made in Parliament was expunged, and he had later written a detailed reply to the Lok Sabha Speaker.

“Some ministers lied about me, that I sought help from foreign powers. But there is no such thing I have done. I will not stop asking questions, I will keep questioning the relationship between PM Modi and Adani,” he added.

He stated, “I have said many times that democracy is being attacked in the country. We are seeing examples of this each day. I asked questions in the Parliament regarding the relationship between PM Modi and Adani: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.”

On Friday, Gandhi was disqualified as a member of the Lok Sabha, a day after a Surat court sentenced him to two years imprisonment in a defamation case filed against him over his ‘Modi surname’ remark. In April 2019, he made the remark “how come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname” at a Lok Sabha election rally at Kolar in Karnataka. The court approved Gandhi’s bail on a surety and stayed the sentence for 30 days to allow him to approach the higher courts.

The Congress party on Friday came down heavily at the Centre over the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi as a Lok Sabha member, calling it a “strangulation of democracy” while exuding confidence that the disqualification will be revoked through a stay on his conviction by a higher court.

Earlier on Friday, BJP National President JP Nadda criticized Rahul Gandhi for his remarks which led to his conviction from the Surat court followed by disqualification from Lok Sabha.

Taking to Twitter, JP Nadda said, “By comparing OBC communities to thieves, Mr Rahul Gandhi has shown a pathetic and casteist mindset. However, his latest tirade is not surprising. For the last many years, he has always reduced levels of political discourse”.

“Mr Rahul Gandhi calls the entire OBC community thieves. He gets a flak in the Courts but he refuses to apologise thus showing how deep-rooted his hatred for OBCs is. The people of India did not forgive him in 2019…in 2024 the punishment will be more severe,” he further tweeted.

On Friday, Union Minister Bhupender Yadav also alleged that the Congress MP had defamed India on foreign soil and insulted the country’s judicial system and the OBC community.

While talking to ANI, Yadav said, “Rahul Gandhi has continuously insulted the surname of the OBC community. Not only this he has defamed the nation on foreign soil. He is defaming Parliament, the OBC community, and the Judiciary”.

“I want to ask no politician has the right to insult the OBC community. Insulting any surname is not freedom of speech. This behaviour of the leader shows Bharat Todo, not Bharat Jodo of the Congress. Congress is questioning the legal decision which has not been done till now by anybody,” Yadav said. (ANI)

Rahul To Address Press Conference At 1 PM

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will address a press conference at 1 PM Saturday at the party headquarters here after being disqualified as a member of Lok Sabha.

The official Twitter handle of Congress said, “Rahul Gandhi will be addressing the media at 1 PM today at AICC HQ, New Delhi”.
“In the press conference, Rahul Gandhi will be likely accompanied by Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel,” a Congress party worker said.

On Friday, Gandhi was disqualified as a member of the Lok Sabha, a day after his conviction by the Surat court in a defamation case.

On Thursday, a Surat court sentenced Rahul Gandhi to two years imprisonment in a defamation case filed against him over his ‘Modi surname’ remark. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah

K’taka Polls: Cong Announces First List Of 124 Candidates

The Congress party on Saturday announced the first list of candidates for the Karnataka assembly elections.

The names of former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and State party president DK Shivakumar are included in the first list of 124 candidates.
Siddaramaiah will be contesting from the Varuna constituency while DK Shivakumar would be the candidate from Kanakapura.

Earlier, Siddaramaiah had expressed his interest to contest from the Kolar constituency but the Congress High Command instructed him to drop the plan following disagreements between the party’s local leaders in the constituency. The party has fielded M Roopakala from the Kolar Gold Field constituency.

DK Shivakumar, earlier, on March 6, talked up his party’s prospects in the upcoming elections, claiming that the ruling BJP would not be able to secure more than 65 seats.

Shivakumar claimed that all the people in his state, including farmers, were saying this.

“We have almost finalised 75 per cent of seat allotments. A decision on all seats will be taken soon after we will send the names of candidates to the high command for its approval,” he added.

On March 2, in an exclusive interview with ANI, Karnataka CM Basavraj Bommai said the BJP will win the Assembly elections.

On Congress’s prospects in the elections, Bommai said the party was making a desperate attempt to win the polls but it would succeed as its track record while in power was bad. The CM said the Congress, during its tenure, did nothing for the people and only worked to create divisions in society.

“They did nothing for the SCs and STs. That is why they are not in the government. Now they are trying to wrest power by making promises that are impossible to meet. They are saying they will give Rs 2,000 to each household and for that, they require Rs 24,000 thousand crores. How will they raise this huge amount? The Congress is desperate to win the polls, which is why they are making such false promises,” Bommai said earlier this month. (ANI)

U'khand Alert, Possibility Of Amritpal Entering State Through Haryana

U’khand Alert, Possibility Of Amritpal Entering State Through Haryana

An alert has been sounded in Uttarakhand over the possibility of absconding pro-Khalistan preacher Amritpal Singh entering the State, informed Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) V Murugesan on Saturday morning.

Murugesan added that he had received inputs from the Punjab Police that the Khalistan supporter who fled from Punjab, may enter Uttarakhand from Haryana.
He told ANI that checking and monitoring are being done and an alert has been kept at the possible places.

The police official said that that the district police have also been alerted and that the border has also been placed under an alert.

On Friday, an alert was issued in the Dehradun, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts of Uttarakhand as a precaution in view of the possibility of Amritpal Singh entering the State.

On Friday, teams of Delhi Police and Punjab Police launched a search operation for Amritpal Singh in Delhi and its border in view of the possibility of him entering the national capital.

Delhi Police said that the head of the pro-Khalistani outfit Waris Punjab De is suspected of having left the national capital.

According to sources, Delhi Police and Punjab Police were conducting a search operation in Delhi and its borders after receiving intelligence inputs of a sighting of Khalistan sympathiser Amritpal at Delhi’s ISBT bus terminal.

Intelligence inputs had suggested that he may be disguised as a sadhu. Papalpreet Singh is accompanying Amritpal Singh, sources said.

The Punjab Police had expressed doubts about Amritpal entering the Delhi border using any vehicle other than a bus. Following the input, Delhi Police went on alert mode and are trying to track Amritpal’s movements.

On March 18, Punjab Police launched an operation against Amritpal and his aides. The crackdown came almost over three weeks after Amritpal’s supporters clashed with uniformed personnel at the Ajnala police station on February 23, on the outskirts of Amritsar, demanding the release of one of his close aides, Lovepreet Toofan.

Thousands of his supporters stormed the Ajnala police station, flashing swords and high-calibre firearms and threatening the police with dire consequences if they did not release Lovepreet Toofan, who was arrested for allegedly assaulting and abducting a man. (ANI)

‘Modi Regime Will Pay Dearly For Its Brazen Act To Silence Rahul’

Modi Regime Will Pay Dearly For Its Brazen Act To Silence Rahul

Nivedita Jha, a Patna-based writer and social activist, says a similar attempt to debar Indira Gandhi from Parliament had boomeranged on the then Janata Dal government. Her views:

The Surat court verdict against Rahul Gandhi and the latest decision to debar him from Parliament is a well thought-out attempt to silence him and the Opposition. This is extremely dangerous for democracy and will damage it with terrible consequences. We are living in very difficult times. Anyone who writes or speaks against this regime is hounded and punished, or silenced.

However, I am certain that this attack on Rahul Gandhi would very seriously damage Narendra Modi and the BJP in the short and long run. Undoubtedly, this is bound to boomerang.

I am reminded of the arrest of Indira Gandhi by then Union Home Minister, Charan Singh, and the move to debar her from Parliament. The people of India did not like this at all. Consequently, she returned to power with a popular mandate and a majority in 1980.

Rahul Gandhi has made no hate speech. The BJP and its leaders are routinely making violent and hate speeches, and nothing happens to them ever. Take, for instance, Giriraj Singh in Bihar. The kind of communal statements he has uttered publicly in the past is outside all norms of legality or civilized society. Nothing has ever happened to him.

It is also becoming crystal clear that they are threatened by Rahul Gandhi, especially after the Bharat Jodo Yatra. Earlier they pumped in huge amount of money and used their power in the social media and among certain journalists to destroy his image, while derogatorily branding him Pappu. They have used fake news and crass propaganda to sully his image, and to sully the image of Jawaharlal Nehru, among other things. If you do a Google search, they see to it that their fake news pops up as lead stories. If you do a Google search on Nehru, you would be surprised by the obscene trolling done against him!

They tried their best to destroy the image of Rahul Gandhi, but they have failed. After the success of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, his image has effectively changed and he has become a more popular leader across the country. Modi and the BJP are clearly threatened by Rahul Gandhi’s growing popularity. This move to debar him would certainly boost his image.

ALSO READ: Democracy Is Under Strain In BJP Regime

Many governments have been repressive in the past, including the Congress dispensation. However, we are living in perhaps the most difficult and dangerous time in our post-independence history. Our democracy is severely threatened and seriously damaged in the current circumstances. Most institutions, the CBI, Enforcement Directorate, large sections of the media, seem to have been totally taken over. Young scholars from the universities are rotting in prison for so long for no fault of theirs.

Opposition leaders are being hounded, arrested and raided. The BJP-RSS and this regime seems to be hell-bent on ravaging our secular democracy whereby all forms of dissent are eliminated, all Opposition parties are blocked, and only they can rule supreme. Then, certainly, India will no longer remain a democracy. It will be suffocated under a dictatorship.

This is a situation which reminds me of the ideology of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis, which the BJP shares. They don’t want to hear even a squeak of dissent. Certainly, this is a black era in our history. What is happening is indeed shameful!

However, I am certain that this move to hound and debar Rahul Gandhi from Parliament will have serious consequences and will badly damage the BJP. If they try to ban him from contesting elections, it will further damage them politically.  The politics of revenge almost always leads to a counter-narrative.

Recently, they arrested some printers and workers carrying posters for AAP which said: Modi hatao, desh bachao! This is like banning all opposition to him effectively. However, it is not working. The CPI has given a call: Modi hatao, desh bachao! AAP did a rally in Jantar Mantar, Delhi, with a huge banner on the stage which said: Modi hatao, desh bachao! All opposition parties have come out to protest on the streets with placards which carried the same slogan.

That is why I say, this move against Rahul Gandhi is bound to boomerang badly on the BJP and Modi. This will damage them, that is for certain.

Rahul Asks Workers To Mobilize Aid

Opposition Come In Support Of Rahul Call It A Black Day

Opposition leaders on Friday came out in support of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the wake of his disqualification as a member of the Lok Sabha, calling it a “black day” for Indian democracy.

Rahul was disqualified from the Lok Sabha after his conviction by a Surat court in a criminal defamation case.
Opposition parties, including those that are opposed to the Congress and are said to be mulling over the formation of a Third Front against the BJP in next year’s Lok Sabha elections, stood in support of the Congress leader.

Among prominent Opposition players coming out in Rahul’s support were Congress allies in Maharashtra, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Shiva Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) and the Trinamool Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which doesn’t see eye-to-eye with the grand old party in most matters.

AAP Supremo and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said those who want to “destroy the nation” should stay in the BJP while those who want to “save the nation” from ruin must leave.

“Never before in the history of India was there a PM, who is just a 12th pass. He can’t run the country and lets his ego guide his actions. I urge all BJP leaders to consider leaving the party as the country is being destroyed under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Those who want the nation destroyed can stay with the BJP while those who want to save it from ruin must leave,” Kejriwal said.

“Now the people of the country will have to come forward and fight this undemocratic regime. If we want to save the country, 130 crore Indians will have to come forward and lead the fight. It doesn’t matter which party comes to power. What is of concern is the way our democracy is being tarnished and attacked,” the Delhi CM added.

TMC chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has been a fierce critic of the BJP and the central government, also came out in support of Rahul saying that while Opposition leaders are being disqualified over speeches, BJP leaders with “criminal antecedents” were being made ministers.

“In PM Modi’s New India, Opposition leaders have become the prime target of the BJP! While BJP leaders with criminal antecedents are inducted into the cabinet, Opposition leaders are disqualified for their speeches. Today, we have witnessed a new low for our constitutional democracy,” the TMC Supremo said.

Bharat Rashtra Samithi chief and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, who has been sounding out like-minded Opposition players for an anti-BJP front sans the Congress, too, called Rahul’s disqualification as an MP a “black day” for democracy and the “height of PM Modi’s arrogance”.

“Today is a Black Day in the history of Indian democracy. Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from Parliament is the height of Narendra Modi’s arrogance and dictatorship. This is not the time for conflicts between parties. All democrats should openly condemn the misdeeds of the BJP govt to safeguard the democracy and constitutional values of the country,” he said.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who once allied with the Congress for the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and later parted ways after a crushing defeat, also condemned Rahul’s disqualification.

“The political challenge does not end with the hijacking of one’s membership of Parliament. The biggest movement is not the one in Parliament. We have to win this fight on the streets. The person who moved court claiming defamation should level a similar charge at people, who betrayed their country and fled abroad,” Akhilesh tweeted in Hindi.

DMK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, meanwhile, called for an urgent relook at the action taken against Rahul Gandhi.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the decision to disqualify Rahul was taken in “haste” and is “yet another episode in BJP’s authoritarian rampage against Indian democracy”.

“This brazen assault is an insult to our democratic values and can’t be overlooked. It must be unequivocally denounced,” Vijayan tweeted.

NCP and the Uddhav faction of the Shiv Sena, too, threw their combined political weight behind the Congress leader, unleashing a scathing attack at the Centre.

“Our constitution guarantees the right of each individual to fair justice; liberty of thought; equality of status and opportunity and fraternity assuring the dignity of each Indian. The disqualifications of Mr Rahul Gandhi and Mr Faizal a few months ago as MPs of the Lok Sabha are against the basic tenets of the constitution, where democratic values are being curtailed. This is condemnable and against the very principles on which the constitution is based. We all need to stand together to defend our democratic institutions,” tweeted NCP patriarch Sharad Pawar.

Labelling the disqualification as a “murder of democracy”, Uddhav said this was the beginning of the “end of dictatorship”.

“Rahul Gandhi’s candidacy has been cancelled. Calling a thief, a thief has become a crime in our country. Thieves & looters are still free and Rahul Gandhi was punished. This is a direct murder of democracy. All govt systems are under pressure. This is the beginning of the end of the dictatorship. Only the fight has to be given direction,” he said.

Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge said, “They (BJP) tried every trick in the book to disqualify him. They don’t want MPs who speak the truth. But we will continue to stand for the truth. We’ll continue to demand a JPC (in the Hindenburg-Adani row) and will even go to jail to save democracy.”

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said the move to disqualify Rahul from the Lok Sabha will “cost” the BJP dear in the next Lok Sabha elections.

“Ever since the Bharat Jodo Yatra concluded successfully, the government is perturbed. The manner in which Rahul Gandhi, a patriot who belongs to a family that took part in the freedom struggle and whose grandmother and father laid down their lives for the country, has been stopped not just from speaking in the Parliament but even entering the building. They (BJP) will have to pay a price for this,” Gehlot told ANI.

“They had harassed Indira Gandhi as well and she was disqualified from the Parliament. They paid the price as there was a wave for Indira Gandhi and she returned as PM with a massive majority. I can say that with the recent activities, our chances in the 2024 election will be boosted manifold. People won’t tolerate such a dictatorial government,” he added.

Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said Rahul’s disqualification was nothing but an expression of the politics of vendetta.

“It is a sheer case of retributive politics as Rahul Gandhi has been gaining popularity in the wake of the Bharat Jodo Yatra. The Modi government cannot digest his rising popularity. This is a very cruel demonstration of an autocratic government,” he said.

Telangana Congress chief Revanth Reddy said that Rahul’s disqualification as an MP is nothing but an attempt to divert the attention of the people from the more pressing issues affecting the people.

“These are all non-democratic steps. The decision was taken by pressurising the Lok Sabha Secretariat. This was done to divert the attention of people from the main issue (JPC probe into the Adani Group). The Congress and the Gandhis are not afraid of them (BJP),” he said.

“PM Modi had once called Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury ‘Surpanakha’ in the Rajya Sabha. Despite being a PM, he made such a derogatory remark about her. They are just trying to scare the Gandhi family but we all are with them,” Reddy added.

Taking to Twitter to voice her outrage against Rahul’s disqualification, Renuka Chowdhury posted, “This classless megalomaniac referred to me as Surpanakha on the floor of the House. I will file a defamation case against him. Let’s see how fast our courts act.”

RJD leader and Bihar minister Tej Pratap Yadav said the disqualification is part of a larger conspiracy.

“The people of Bihar and the entire nation can see what they (BJP) are doing. All such decisions are being taken at their (BJP’s) orders,” he said.

Congress leader and former Uttarakhand CM Harish Rawat said Rahul’s disqualification will be the turning point in the country.

“We’ll fight strongly against this attack on our democracy. Yesterday, it was ‘Shaheed Diwas’ (the day to commemorate the hanging of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru) and the political sacrifice by Rahul Gandhi today will be the turning point in the country. The country will win this fight to save democracy,” he said.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said the disqualification of an elected member of Parliament has sent a “poor signal” to the world about the state of Indian democracy.

“I was stunned by this decision and particularly by the unseemly haste with which it was carried out. The lawyers will certainly be questioning this. It sends a very poor signal to the world about Indian democracy when the leader of the principal opposition party is treated in this way. You can’t muzzle voices in a democracy and still call yourself democratic,” Tharoor told ANI.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said, “Rahul Gandhi can return to the Parliament by contesting from some other constituency. Winning the election isn’t his priority. He is worried about our democracy being murdered. Rahul Gandhi strengthened our democracy through the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ and the BJP got scared of it.”

Congress workers in Lucknow were detained earlier in the day during a protest against the disqualification of Rahul as a member of Parliament. (ANI)

Tiktok Australia

France To Ban TikTok

A growing number of countries in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific have banned the popular video-sharing app TikTok from government devices as privacy and cybersecurity concerns increase, with France likely to be the latest, reported France 24.

French Civil Service Minister Stanislas Guerini on Friday announced that France would ban the use of the Chinese-owned video-sharing app, TikTok, on the work phones of civil servants.
“In order to guarantee the cybersecurity of our administrations and civil servants, the government has decided to ban recreational applications such as TikTok on the professional phones of civil servants,” he tweeted.

A string of governments and institutions in the West have banned TikTok in recent weeks, including the UK parliament, the Dutch and Belgian administrations and the New Zealand parliament.

India too imposed a nationwide ban on TikTok and dozens of other Chinese apps, including the messaging app WeChat, in 2020 over privacy and security concerns.

Concerns have mounted globally about the potential for the Chinese government to access users’ location and contact data through ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, reported France24.

The company’s CEO Shou Zi Chew faced a grilling US lawmakers on Thursday, in a rare bipartisan rebuke that reflected a growing penchant to ban the app from the US over its ties to China and handling of user data.

Both Democrats and Republicans view the Chinese Communist Party as America’s foremost national security threat. They recognise that the CCP is playing the long haul and its endgame is global domination. To achieve its mission, Beijing is using a four-dimensional strategy of military, economic, diplomatic and cultural aggression with technology as its core. That includes TikTok.

TikTok’s chief executive said user data can be accessed by its Chinese parent company and said that the staff in China currently have the ability to see user information.

In testimony before the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, CEO Shou Zi Chew struggled to reassure lawmakers that the massively popular social video app doesn’t pose a risk to its 150 million users nor share user data with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

Moreover, TikTok is bound by China’s National Intelligence Law, which compels every Chinese citizen and company to surrender all data to the Chinese Communist Party on request and perform surveillance activities on behalf of the CCP.

TikTok, like many other social media companies, collects users’ personal information, including phone numbers, email addresses, contacts and Wi-Fi networks.

ByteDance has said the company does not share information with the Chinese government, but US officials counter that Chinese law requires the company based in Beijing to make the app’s data available to the CCP.

The China-based app, which counts more than 150 million US users each month, has faced growing scrutiny from government officials over fears that user data could fall into the possession of the Chinese government and that the app could be weaponised by China to spread misinformation.

In testimony before the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, CEO Shou Zi Chew struggled to reassure lawmakers that the massively popular social video app doesn’t pose a risk to the US.

He admitted that TikTok had collected location data on US users in the past, and said some historical data is still stored in servers that could be accessed by engineers from ByteDance, its parent company based in China, reported CBS News.

TikTok is already banned on federal government devices, including military devices, and a growing number of states have implemented it on state government devices.

Federal lawmakers have introduced several bills that would empower the administration to ban TikTok nationwide.

The Biden administration wants ByteDance to divest itself from the short-form video platform. (ANI)

MEA Pakistan India

MEA Wants Action Not Assurance On Vandalism In UK, US By Khalistanis

India would like to see action, more than just assurance, the Ministry of External Affairs said on the vandalism of Indian missions in various countries by Khalistanis, adding that he hoped that foreign governments will act against and prosecute those involved.

Addressing the weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi, to a question on the vandalism of the Indian High Commission in London and the Indian High Consulate in San Fransisco, said, “On the issues of security, whenever we feel there is an issue relating to the security of our missions abroad high commissions and embassies, this issue is taken up. Whenever we have concerns where we feel that there will be some activities that may harm our interests, we do take it up.”
“You would have seen specifically in London and at least in San Francisco, we’ve strongly taken up the matter of vandalism and attacks on our missions there. You would have also seen our statements in this regard,” he added.

Bagchi further stated that India expects the host governments to take action to identify and prosecute all those involved and also take necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents. He also hoped that the government would provide full and adequate protection to Indian missions as well as to the personnel working there.

“I think that’s probably what your question was, assurance… Yes. Look, on that element we just say look, I think we are not interested in just assurances. I think we would like to see action. That’s why I would leave it at that,” the MEA spokesperson added.

Earlier, on March 19, a pro-Khalistan protestor in London climbed the High Commission of India’s balcony and pulled down the national flag.

A video of the same incident had gone viral on social video. In the now-viral video, the Khalistani protestor is seen on the balcony attempting to bring down the Indian flag. At the end of the video, another man is seen reaching the balcony and wresting the Tricolour back from the Khalistan supporter.

Khalistan supporters also allegedly attacked Indian Consulate in San Francisco (SFO). Videos of supporters breaking the doors and barging into the office surfaced on social media.

Though visuals of the vandalism at the San Francisco consulate have been doing the rounds of social media, the incident is yet to be confirmed by Indian officials.

While the visuals confirmed that the incident happened at the consulate, the date could not be ascertained.

Visuals shared online show a sizeable mob brandishing Khalistan flags and mounted on wooden poles, using them to smash glass doors and windows of the consulate building. Raising pro-Khalistan slogans, they broke through makeshift security barriers raised by the city police and installed two Khalistani flags inside the premises. (ANI)

Rahul Joins Indira, Azam, Lalu And More In List Of Disqualified Leaders

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who was disqualified as an MP from Lok Sabha on Friday, joined an inglorious list of MPs and MLAs, including his grandmother and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who faced similar action in the past.

The disqualification law, under the Representation of the People Act, states that an MP or MLA, sentenced to two years of imprisonment or more, would be disqualified and remain disqualified for six years after serving time.
The list of other MPs and MLAs, who lost the status of a people’s representative after being similarly convicted, also includes RJD veteran Lalu Prasad Yadav; late AIADMK leader for former Tamil Nadu chief minister, J Jayalalithaa; and Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, among others.

The following is a jog-back to the events leading to the disqualification of some prominent political leaders as people’s representatives:

1. Indira Gandhi:

Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi faced an adverse court verdict and was debarred from holding any elected post for six years following her conviction by the Allahabad High Court in June, 1975. The verdict is widely believed to have led to the imposition of the Emergency.

2. Lalu Prasad Yadav:

The Rashtriya Janata Dal Supremo and the former Bihar chief minister was disqualified as an MP from Bihar’s Saran after he was convicted in the fodder scam in September 2013.

3. Azam Khan:
