Atiq Killers

Atiq’s Killers Were Jobless, Drug Addicts, Say Kin

After gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead in Prayagraj in full media glare on Saturday night, the father of one of the assailants on Sunday said his son was jobless and a drug addict.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Yagya Tiwari (father of Lovelesh, one of the arrested shooters) said, “He is my son. We saw the incident on TV. We are not aware of the actions of Lovelesh nor do we have anything to do with this. He never lived here and neither was he involved in our family affairs. He did not tell us anything. He came here five to six days ago. We have not been on talking terms with him for years. There is already a case registered against him. He was jailed in that case.”
“He doesn’t work. He was a drug addict. We have four children. We have nothing to say about this,” Yagya Tiwari added.

Meanwhile, speaking to ANI, Pintu Singh (brother of shooter Sunny Singh) said, “He used to wander around and did no work. We live separately and dont know how he became a criminal. We have no idea about the incident.”

Days after Atiq Ahmed’s son Asad was killed in an encounter in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi, the mafia-turned-politician and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were killed on Saturday while being taken for a medical examination in Prayagraj.

Atiq was accused in the murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal in 2005 and also in the subsequent killing of Umesh Pal, a key witness in the BSP’s leader’s murder, in February this year.

All three assailants were arrested, informed police after Atiq and his brother were shot dead.

“Three people have been arrested and they are being questioned. A journalist was also injured as he fell down and a constable sustained a bullet injury,” Prayagraj Police Commissioner Ramit Sharma said earlier.

UP CM Yogi Adityanath also ordered the setting up of a three-member judicial commission to probe the incident.

“UP CM Yogi Adityanath took cognisance of the Prayagraj incident. He chaired a high-level meeting and ordered a high-level inquiry into the matter. The CM also ordered the formation of a three-member Judicial Commission (Judicial Inquiry Commission) in the matter,” an officer said.

A forensic team also reached the scene of the incident and collected samples.

Moments before their killing, the slain gangster siblings, who were accused in the Umesh Pal murder case, were speaking to the media while being taken for a medical and their murder was captured on camera.

Nahi le gaye to nahi gaye
(they did not take us, so we did not go)” were Atiq Ahmed’s last words, when asked what did he have to say about not being taken to his son Asad’s burial. (ANI)

Owaisi on atiq killing

Not Scared To Visit UP: Owaisi On Atiq’s Killing

Coming down hard on the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh over the prevailing law and order situation in the wake of the killing of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed in Prayagraj, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Sunday said it was necessary to prevent radicalisation, adding that he was not afraid to visit Uttar Pradesh.

Addressing the mediapersons on Sunday morning, Owaisi said, “I have always been saying that BJP in Uttar Pradesh is not running the government by the rule of law but by the rule of gun. Uttar Pradesh’s BJP government has a role in this. Supreme Court-monitored investigation should be done and a committee should be formed. No officer from Uttar Pradesh should be included in the committee. This was a ‘cold-blooded’ murder.”
He further said, “I am ready to die… Radicalisation needs to be stopped. I will surely visit Uttar Pradesh, I am not scared.
Jab pyaar kiya toh darna kya
(why fear death when you are loved).”

Calling the incident a “cold-blooded murder”, Owaisi added that people who are celebrating this killing are “vultures”.

“How did they (killers) get those weapons?… Why were they raising religious slogans after killing them? What will you call them if not terrorists? Will you call them Patriots? People celebrating this incident are vultures…” he said.

Owaisi said the incident raises a big question about the law and order situation.

The AIMIM chief questioned whether the public will have any faith in the constitution and law and order of the country after this incident.

He said, “We would like to ask the Prime Minister of the country whether you will say anything or not? The Prime Minister says in his speech that ‘meri supari li gayi hai’. Now tell what is happening in the state from where you are the Member of Parliament. Every citizen of India is feeling unsafe and vulnerable after yesterday’s incident.”

Owaisi further demanded Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s resignation.

“I demand the resignation of UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the Supreme Court to form a team and investigate this matter. We also demand all police officers present there should be removed from service,” he said.

“Atiq and his brother were in police custody. He was handcuffed. JSR (Jai Shri Ram) slogans were also raised. The killing of both is the failure of Yogi’s law and order system. Those celebrating encounter raj are also responsible for this murder,” Owaisi added.

Days after Atiq Ahmed’s son Asad was killed in an encounter in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi, the gangster-turned-politician and his brother, Ashraf Ahmed, were killed on Saturday while being taken for a medical examination in Prayagraj.

Atiq Ahmed was accused in the 2005 Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal murder case and also in the Umesh Pal murder case which happened in February this year. UP Police, has, so far, arrested a total of 3 shooters in this incident.

In the aftermath of the incident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in a late-night meeting instructed the state police officers to be on high alert and ensure law and order are maintained across the state.

“UP CM Yogi Adityanath has instructed Police officers to be on alert, ensure peace, law and order are maintained in the state and the public doesn’t face any trouble,” according to the Chief Minister office’s statement.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered a high-level inquiry into the matter.

“CM Yogi immediately called a high-level meeting and ordered a high-level inquiry into the whole matter. Chief Minister also gave instructions for the formation of a three-member Judicial Commission (Judicial Inquiry Commission) in the matter,” officials said.

Uttar Pradesh government on Sunday imposed Section 144 of CrPC in all the districts, in the aftermath of Atiq Ahmed, Ashraf Ahmed was shot dead in Prayagraj, officials informed.

Shortly after mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead in Prayagraj, former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday said crime has reached its peak in the state and the morale of the “criminals” has grown by leaps and bounds.

“Crime has reached its peak in UP and the morale of the criminals is high. When someone can be killed openly despite being surrounded by a security cordon, one can imagine the state of the general public. Due to this (alleged encounter killings), an ambiance of fear is being created among the public. It seems that some people are deliberately creating such an ambiance,” Akhilesh Yadav tweeted. (ANI)

Andhra CM IN former MP's Murder case

Andhra CM’s Uncle Arrested In Former MP’s Murder

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday arrested YS Bhaskar Reddy, uncle of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, in connection with the alleged murder of former MP YS Vivekananda Reddy, said sources.

The deceased YS Vivekananda Reddy was a former MLA, a former member of the Lok Sabha and the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council. He was found dead at his residence on March 15, 2019.
Further details are awaited in the matter.

In January, the Supreme Court asked Telangana High Court to consider afresh, on merit, the CBI’s plea seeking cancellation of bail to Gangi Reddy in connection with the alleged murder of YS Vivekananda Reddy.

A bench of justices MR Shah and CT Ravikumar observed that in a case where an accused is released on default and thereafter on the filing of the chargesheet, a strong case is made out from the chargesheet and his bail can be cancelled on merit.

Initially, a case was registered by the local police in Pulivendula.

Subsequently, a case under Section 302, read with Section 120-B of the Indian Penal Code, was registered. A special Investigation Team was constituted by the state government to probe the alleged killing.

During the course of the investigation, the respondent accused was arrested on March 28, 2019. The statutory period of 90 days lapsed on June 26, 2019.

On the very next day of lapsing of 90 days, the respondent accused filed a bail application for default bail, which was allowed by a local court in Pulivendula on June 27, 2019. The accused was released on bail as per the order.

Subsequently and pursuant to the order passed by the High Court dated March 11, 2020, an investigation in the case was given to CBI, which alleged that the investigation revealed that a conspiracy was hatched between four accused along with some other persons to kill the deceased and there were some influenced persons behind the said conspiracy.

CBI filed the initial chargesheet on October 26, 2021, and named the accused. Thereafter the CBI filed an application before the Special Court for cancellation of the bail granted to the respondents, which came to be dismissed by the learned Trial Court vide order dated November 30, 2021.

Thereafter, CBI moved to the High Court which also rejected the agency’s plea. (ANI)

BJP’s Fight to Win Karnataka Could Go Down to The Wire

BJP’s fight to win Karnataka could go down to the wire

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) surge in Indian states is impressive. Of the 28 states, the BJP and its political allies, rule in 12 of India’s 28 states and two union territories. Besides, a BJP-dominated alliance has been in power at the Centre since 2014 with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the helm of it for the past nine years. The BJP’s sway across India’s states has been a strong trend. It has largely decimated its main rival, the Congress Party, and in many states, it has defeated prominent regional parties.

However, the BJP’s clout has historically been the strongest in the northern states and the party has often been identified as being most influential in a vast swathe of India that is commonly called the “Hindi belt”. In recent years, particularly after coming to power at the Centre, the BJP has grown in popularity in other regions. In the north-eastern part of India, for example, in Assam, Manipur, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh, it is a BJP government that is in power; and in Nagaland and Meghalaya, the BJP is part of the ruling alliance.

It is a somewhat different story in southern India, though. In Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, the BJP has been largely unsuccessful in its bid to wrest power from its rival parties, including strong regional contenders. Partly this is because of the north-south divide that exists in India across attributes such as the economy, culture, and language differences.

Except for Karnataka. In that state, the BJP brand of Hindutva has found significant favour. In fact, the incumbent government is a BJP-led one, albeit because of the support it gets from the Janata Dal (Secular), a regional party run by the family of the former prime minister H.D. Devegowda. In the 2018 elections, the BJP won 104 of the 224 seats in the state’s assembly and first sat in the Opposition but later got the JD(S)’s support to form the government.

So even in Karnataka, it hasn’t been a smooth run for the BJP. Trends and ground reports indicate that it won’t be so in the coming elections as well. In some parts of Karnataka, notably in the Mysore district and in the coastal areas of the state, Modi and his party enjoy popularity. Still, the fight in Karnataka will be a three-cornered one: between the BJP, the Congress, and the JD(S). The voting pattern in the state is also likely to be determined on the basis of the two main caste groups: the Vokkaligas and the Lingayats. Interestingly, the majority of the candidates that the BJP has announced are from either of those two communities. BJP is hoping to chip into the JD(S) and the Congress’s voting blocks by wooing the two communities.

As the three parties up the ante in their campaigning, the BJP and the JD(S) have an edge over the Congress, which has been in a continuing state of disarray at the national level and has been declining in popularity continuously as the results of recent elections have shown.

Yet, it is not easy to predict how the BJP will fare in the coming elections. If it does not manage to get a clear majority, it will likely have to lean on the support of other parties, notably the JD(S) again. For the BJP, Karnataka is an important state. If it manages a decisive victory it could be the beginning of a larger foray into the southern part of India, a region that it has not been able to make a dent in till now.

AAP becomes a “national party”

The rise of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been meteoric and impressive. It was formed in the winter of 2012, just10 years ago, emerging from a wave of anti-corruption protests helmed by the activist, Anna Hazare, who was later joined by other activists, including Arvind Kejriwal, who later founded AAP. His party first won the elections to the Delhi assembly, and more recently the elections in Punjab. Last week, in a significant step, the election commission declared that AAP was now recognised as a national party in India.

According to the law, a registered political party is recognised as being a national party if it fulfills any of three conditions: the party is able to win 2% of the seats in Lok Sabha; it polls at least 6% of the votes in a general election or an election to the legislative assembly of a state; or it gets recognised as a state party in at least four states.

With AAP’s recognition as a national party, India now has six national parties: the BJP, Congress, Bahujan Samaj Party, Communist Party of India (Marxist), the National People’s Party, and AAP. Significantly, the election commission withdrew the national status of three parties, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Trinamool Congress, and the Communist Party of India (CPI) because they no longer met the criteria.

What does the national status mean for AAP? It gives the party and its supporters a significant morale boost. For AAP and its leaders, who have ambitions of contesting elections in several other states in India, it gives considerable heft, if not materially, at least in terms of sentiment.

Pentagon leaks and what they mean

A large number of classified secret documents were discovered to be leaked from the Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Department of Defense last week. While a relatively junior, 21-year-old airman was held in connection with the leaks, the significance of the leak and their ramifications are of importance.

The leaks related to various issues but chiefly were in connection with Russia’s war against Ukraine. Here are some of them: First, as recently as in February, the US government seemed to be pessimistic about Kyiv’s capabilities in defending Ukraine against Russian attacks. The documents said the US’ assessment was that Ukraine was not equipped to counter any fresh offensives by Russia this Spring. They said Ukraine’s air defence systems and availability of missiles against Russian attacks could fall short of what was needed.

Second, the leaks suggested that the US had very deep insights into Russia’s military operations in the region. These related to Russia’s targets in Ukraine and also plans to offer bonuses to troops if they attacked and destroyed Nato tanks. They also detailed plans of Russian mercenary groups who could target their operations in other regions such as Haiti.

Third, the documents revealed details of 97 special force operatives from various countries including the UK, which were active in Ukraine. These special forces could be part of a concerted Nato counter-initiative in the region.

Fourth, the documents detail conversations between the United Nations secretary general Antonio Guterres and his deputy about a deal with Ukraine to export grains to ease a food crisis globally. The documents appeared to suggest that the UN chief might have seemed sympathetic to Russian interests and undermined efforts against Russia.

Other documents pointed to US efforts to get South Korea to supply weapons to Ukraine.South Korea has a policy of not providing weapons to warring nations.

Besides potentially souring relations between the US and Ukraine, the documents embarrassingly point to America’s scepticism about the UN secretary-general. They also reveal to Russia the extent of spying that the US is capable of and could lead to Russia adopting counter moves to prevent such information from leaking in the future. The leaks also show that the US could be spying on its allies such as South Korea. For the US, this is a setback to the trust and goodwill that its allies shared with the country

Ukraine woos India diplomatically

War-torn Ukraine has reached out to India seeking more support from the latter during the ongoing Russian offensive against the country. In an interview to an Indian broadcaster last week, Ukraine’s deputy foreign minister Emine Dzhaparova said her country wanted India to invite officials from Ukraine to G20 events and to have increased dialogue with the Ukraine government.

India is currently holding the presidency (it is a rotating assignment) of G20 and will hold a summit of the group in September. The G20 is a forum that plays an important role in shaping and strengthening global architecture and governance on all major international economic issues. India has not been a very vocal critic of Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. In fact, it has increased its imports of oil from Russia taking advantage of lower prices following sanctions of the Western bloc against Russia.

Ukraine’s move might be construed as a smart tactic to softly pressure India into playing a more active role in its support than has been the case thus far. The Ukraine move comes after the much-talked-about meeting between Chinese president Xi Jinping and Russia’s president Vladimir Putin recently, which has been interpreted as a further bonding between the two nations. India’s relations with China are fraught and while India has been maintaining a fine balance of not aligning itself with either Russia or the West, the time may have come to reassess its stance.

Premier arts institute hit by allegations of sexual harassment

Kalakshetra Foundation is a prestigious Chennai-headquartered arts and cultural academy dedicated to the preservation of traditional values in Indian art and crafts, especially in the field of Bharatanatyam dance and Gandharvaveda music. Last week the world-renowned haven of culture was in the news for the wrong reasons. For weeks, students have been posting online allegations of sexual harassment against staff members of the institute, which has been forced to sack three of its employees. The professor against whom the allegations have been made, Hari Padman, has been arrested by the police.

While investigations into the allegations are still on, the story began late last year when the first complaints started surfacing. Initially, the institute denied the charges and described them as false but with protests brewing over, the charges are now being investigated and action has been initiated. This hits the reputation and image of Kalakshetra hard.

Kejriwal on Liquor excise policy case.

Delhi Liquor Case: Will Answer All Questions, Says Kejriwal

Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday arrived at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office in the national capital for questioning in connection with the excise policy case.

Kejriwal was accompanied by his Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Maan, Delhi Ministers and AAP MPs to the CBI office.
“I will answer all the questions. BJP leaders are talking about it (my arrest). The CBI is controlled by BJP,” Kejriwal told reporters outside the CBI office.

Ahead of appearing before the CBI, the Delhi chief minister paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at his memorial, Rajghat, in the national capital.

The AAP national convenor attacked the Centre saying some anti-national forces do not want India to develop.

“Some anti-national forces do not want India to develop. I want to tell these forces that the country will continue to progress,” Kejriwal told reporters before leaving his residence.

Earlier on Sunday, Kejriwal held a high-level meeting with top leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday ahead of joining. The meeting was held at Kejriwal’s residence.

Several Delhi ministers, including Atishi, Kailash Gahlot, Rajkumar Anand, Gopal Rai and Imran Hussain, were present at the meeting. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Maan and Punjab Assembly speaker Sardar Kultar Singh Sandhwan also attended the meeting. AAP MPs Raghav Chadha, ND Gupta and Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel were also present at the meeting in Kejriwal’s residence.

According to sources, the meeting was called to discuss the next course of action after Kejriwal’s questioning by the CBI on Sunday.

The Delhi CM said the central agency will arrest him if the BJP government has given the orders.

In a video message released on Sunday morning, Kejriwal said, “They (CBI) have called me today and I will definitely go. They are very powerful, they can send anyone to jail. If BJP has ordered CBI to arrest me, then CBI will obviously follow their instructions.”

He further said, “You (BJP) say that I am corrupt. I was a Commissioner in the Income Tax department, I could have earned crores if I wanted to. If Arvind Kejriwal is corrupt then there is no one in this world who is honest.”

In a major development in the Delhi excise policy case, the CBI summoned Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for questioning in connection with the liquor policy case on Sunday.

Meanwhile, AAP workers staged a protest in the national capital over party chief Kejriwal being summoned by the CBI on Sunday. Several AAP workers were detained by Delhi Police at Kashmiri Gate.

Former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, a key aide of Kejriwal, is in jail over alleged irregularities in the excise case.

Sisodia was arrested by Enforcement Directorate (ED) and CBI in the ongoing investigation of a case related to alleged irregularities in the framing and implementation of the excise policy in Delhi.

The CBI arrested Sisodia on February 26. Later on March 9, the ED arrested him, after hours of questioning at Tihar Jail.

The ED and the CBI had alleged that irregularities were committed while modifying the excise policy, undue favours were extended to licence holders, the licence fee was waived or reduced and the L-1 licence was extended without the competent authority’s approval.

The beneficiaries diverted “illegal” gains to the accused officials and made false entries in their account books to evade detection, the probe agencies said. (ANI)

Will Connect Khatu Shyam Ji Shrine By Rail network: Vaishnaw

To provide connectivity to all places of heritage in India, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday informed that the department has devised a comprehensive programme to connect Khatu Shyam Ji Shrine by rail network.

Speaking to ANI, Vaishnaw said, “Khatu Shyam Ji is one of the most revered temples visited by people of the world. About 50-60 lakh devotees visit Khatu Shyam ji in a year. Railway has made a plan to connect all our cultural heritage and places of reverence. Arrangements have been made so that Khatu Shyam ji can connect with the railway network.”
“Recently permission has been given for its survey. We will start work soon after completing the survey,” he added.

He further said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi gives equal importance to both heritage and development. “Recently, our MP Swami Sumedhanand Saraswati also came to me regarding this issue. We will start work in this direction soon,” he said.

Talking about the development of other amenities for the convenience of the people, Vaishnaw said, “The distance from Ringas Junction to Khatu Shyam Ji is about 17 kms. When a new line is build out from the main line, it needs comprehensive development. For example, there should be a facility for the terminal and maintenance of coaching stock.”

“Also, arrangements should be made to start trains from there. Because devotees come from all over the country to visit Khatu Shyam ji. So, there should be such a system that the train can start from there or reach there. Keeping all these things in mind, a complete comprehensive plan is being prepared,” he added.

It is notable that Khatu Shyam Temple is one of the most sacred temples in India. In Rajasthan, the Hindu deity Barbarika is worshipped as Khatu Shyam.
