‘Our Boxers Brought Us Glory; But Better Infra Needed At Grassroots’

Bhumi Dabral, a young boxer from Lucknow, is ecstatic about the recent gold haul by Indian women boxers at World Championship and hopes to achieve similar feat. Her views:

I come from a family of boxers and it brought me immense joy and pride when four Indian female pugilists bagged Gold Medals at the recent World Boxing Championship in New Delhi. Each of those final matches filled us with such adrenaline rush that I cannot describe the feelings in words. These champions have raised the bar for all the budding boxing talent across the country.

My father has been a district level boxer who had to quit the sports due to a near-fatal injury. However, he encouraged his children to put on the gloves and enter the boxing ring. Now, we wish to realise his dreams by bringing Gold and glory to the country.

Apart from my father, I drew a lot of inspiration from former world champion and Padma Bhushan awardee Mary Kom. Her biopic which featured Priyanka Chopra, was so moving that after watching it, my interest and commitment to boxing scaled up to the next level.

Right now, the atmosphere for sportsperson, men or women, in India is very supportive. Under the current regime at the Centre, all sports are being promoted, and adequate infrastructure and training are being provided to boost our performances at international level. Private participation and sponsorship have also increased, which makes it feasible for sportspersons to remain in the game, literally. Such committed efforts were reflected in the achievements of our sportspersons in the Tokyo Olympics and other global tournaments of late.

Having said that there is still much more which requires to be done, especially at the grassroots level. The facilities for boxers at the entry level leave scope for improvement. I can tell you from my own experiences that prejudices still exist in the field of sports and many a promising talent fall off mid-way due to favouritism, politics and other negative issues. This is not limited to boxing but also prevalent in rising sports like badminton and established sports like cricket.

Dabral with her coach Douglas Shepherd

I have taken part at the state- and national-level trials, so I know I have miles to go before I can make my presence felt on the boxing scenario. But the journey has begun on a solid footing and I have been well supported by my coach and mentor in Lucknow.

Not all are similarly lucky. My own brother had fallen prey to certain ‘wrong doings’ and decided to represent another state. His sole aim is to serve the country as a sportsperson; a boxer can take punches on his/her chin and still move on with pride.

We, as a boxing family, always try to assist budding boxers as far as we can but things could be better if the organisational chain starting from the Centre till the district-level is made accountable and transparent in functioning, selection and sponsorship.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal conversations with our medal winners fill us with inspiration. His direct phone calls to sportsperson during Olympics and personal interaction with women boxers lately makes us strive for similar achievements. I am confident that Modiji’s interest in sports will help weed out the politics from sports.

Umesh Pal kidnapping case

Rs 75 L Cash, 200 Accounts, 50 Shell Firms Of Atiq Seized

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has seized Rs 75 lakhs of Indian and foreign currency as well as some documents pertaining to nearly 200 bank accounts and 50 shell entities from the premises of jailed gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and his associates.

The seizure followed a massive raid conducted by the ED sleuths at 15 locations in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj on Wednesday.
The documents pertaining to nearly 200 bank accounts and 50 shell entities, which were seized during these raids, the ED said were used for laundering of ill-gotten money generated out of extortion, land grabbing and other criminal activities.

“Documents of over 100 properties in the name of Atiq Ahmad’s close associates and firms have also been found. These properties are suspected to be Atiq’s benami properties,” said the federal agency.

“Cash transactions worth more than 50 crores have also been unearthed in the searches.

Documents of properties (forcibly) purchased from farmers apparently through criminal intimidation have also been found.”

The agency on Wednesday searched the premises of Atiq and his relative Khalid Zafar, his advocate-cum-accomplice Saulat Hanif Khan, his associates Asad, Vadood Ahmad, Kali, Mohsin, chartered accountant Sabeeh Ahmad, chartered accountant Asif Jafri, Seetaram Shukla (accountant), real estate developers Sanjeev Aggarwal and Deepak Bhargav.

The ED raids were part of its ongoing money laundering investigation against Atiq and those linked to him.

The raids were conducted at a time when Ahmad is being brought to Prayagraj from the Sabarmati Jail in Gujarat for his production in a local court in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case.

The case in which Ahmad is facing trial is linked to the murder of Pal and his two police security guards who were shot dead outside his home in Prayagraj’s Dhoomanganj area on February 24 this year.

Uttar Pradesh Police had registered a First Information Report (FIR) on February 25 against Ahmad, his brother Ashraf, his wife Shaista Parveen, two sons, aides Guddu Muslim and Ghulam, and nine others following a complaint lodged by Pal’s wife.

In 2021, the ED had attached immovable and movable assets, consisting of land and money in several bank accounts worth Rs 8.14 crore, belonging to mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and his wife in connection with the money laundering case.

Land property situated at mauza Katka, Paragana Jhunsi, Tehsil Phulpur, in name of Shaista Parveen, wife of Ahmad was attached. This was acquired by Ahmad for only Rs 4.5 crore which is far below the government’s value of Rs 6.86 crore. In addition, the ED had also attached a bank account balance of Rs 1.28 crore lying in 10 bank accounts of Ahmad and one account of Shaista Parveen.

The ED initiated an investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) after taking cognizance of several FIRs lodged against Ahmad in different police stations, related to murder, extortion, cheating, forgery, land grabbing and crimes of similar nature.

After its investigation under PMLA, the ED said that Ahmad through criminal activities used to earn black money in cash and the same was deposited in several bank accounts of the gangster, his kin and close associates.

It has been noticed by the ED that these funds are being credited to their accounts from various firms and companies of his aides, the ED had said earlier, adding “These funds have been further utilized for buying land in the name of his wife at the consideration price far below the government’s value”.

The ED has said that it had gathered data from the IT department and other agencies related to the companies being run by Ahmad’s aides. (ANI)

Veer Savarkar’s Descendant Files Defamation Suit Against Rahul

A fresh defamation complaint has been filed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his remarks against Veer Savarkar.

Satyaki Savarkar, the grandson of one of the siblings of poet and freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, filed a criminal defamation complaint against Rahul over his remarks against the saffron ideologue.
The Congress leader was disqualified from the Lok Sabha following his conviction in a criminal defamation case over a remark using the surname ‘Modi’.

Even as the grand old party jumped to his defence and moved court challenging his conviction for criminal defamation, the Congress leader landed in a fresh soup after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma threatened to file a defamation suit against Rahul over a social media post linking him to the Adani Group.

Speaking to ANI on Wednesday, Satyaki alleged that Rahul made uncharitable remarks against the saffron ideologue during his recent visit to the United Kingdom this year.

“Rahul Gandhi went to England last month and in one of the gatherings commented that Veer Savarkar wrote in his book that he, along with his 5-6 friends, beat a Muslim and Veer Savarkar enjoyed it. The remark is an insult because that incident is a figment of his imagination. We’ve been hearing a lot from Rahul Gandhi and some of his followers about so-called petitions and pensions. Those were actually sustenance allowance and clemency petitions. We have moved court,” Satyaki said.

“After a point, we felt enough was enough and this needs to stop. Hence, we moved court. Let the court decide now,” he added.

Rahul was earlier convicted and handed a suspended sentence by a Surat court, enabling him to move an appeal against the verdict.

Responding to Rahul’s post, the Assam CM said he will file a defamation case against him after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Assam on April 14.

“Whatever Rahul Gandhi has tweeted, it is a defamatory tweet. So once Prime Minister goes back from Assam we will respond to the tweet and definitely, there will be a defamation case in Guwahati,” he said.

He further added, “But not now, I don’t want to talk about politics now, because we want to celebrate Bihu”.

Rahul Gandhi, in a stinging tweet, posted a tweet with pictures of former Congress leaders, who either joined the BJP or ended decades-old ties with the grand old party, along with that of businessman Gautam Adani.

The pictures included Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, former MP Ghulam nabi Azad, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, leader Anil Antony and former CM Kiran Reddy.

Earlier, a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh worker filed a defamation complaint against Rahul in a Haridwar court for describing the organisation as “Kauravas of the 21st century.”

The lawyer for RSS worker Kamal Bhadauria, said his client filed a complaint in court under Sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the Congress leader for making offensive remarks against the RSS.

The Congress leader, had on January 9 this year, on the sidelines of the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in Haryana, alleged that “Kauravas of the 21st century wear Khakhi half-pants and run ‘shakhas’, and standing with them are three of the richest people of the country”. (ANI)
