Karan Johar

Karan Shares Cryptic Post Amid Claims Of Ruining Priyanka’s Careers

Karan Johar penned a cryptic post on Saturday after receiving backlash over claims that he sabotaged the careers of actors Priyanka Chopra and Anushka Sharma.

Taking to Instagram story, the filmmaker wrote, “Laga lo ilzaam, hum jhukne waalon mein se nahi, jhoot ka ban jao ghulam, hum bolne waalon mein se nahi, jitna neecha dikhaoge, jitne aarop lagaoge, hum girne waalon mein se nahi, humara karam humari Vijay hai, aap utha lo talvaar, Hum marne waalon mein se nahi.”

Recently, an old video of Karan went viral where he was heard saying jokingly, that he wanted to ‘murder’ Anushka Sharma’s career.

Karan Johar initially did not like Anushka’s pictures when she was about to make her debut in Aditya Chopra’s ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.’

During the promotion of ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’, Anushka and Karan both talked about it candidly during a media interaction. Anushka jokingly said then, Karan tried to ‘finish’ her career before it even started.

The video resurfaced after Karan received immense backlash for apparently also coming in the way of actor Priyanka Chopra’s career.

This video resurfaced after Priyanka Chopra recently opened up about the reason why she left Bollywood and started looking for a career in the US.

During a conversation with Dax Shepherd on his podcast ‘Armchair Expert’, Priyanka Chopra revealed why she started looking for work in the US, saying, “I was being pushed into a corner in the industry. I had people not casting me, I had beef with people, I am not good at playing that game so I kind of was tired of the politics and I said I needed a break. This music thing gave me an opportunity to go into another part of the world, not crave for the movies I didn’t want to get but I would require to schmooze certain clubs and cliques of people. It would require grovelling and I had worked a long time by then that I didn’t feel like I wanted to do it.”

Supporting Priyanka and taking an indirect jibe at filmmaker Karan Johar, Kangana shared a picture with Priyanka on her Instagram story. In the picture, the ‘Fashion’ actors are seen holding hands together. Kangana wrote, “Truth remains Cruella has done big favour on us by bullying and isolating us… PC became a Hollywood star and I produced and directed my own film which is releasing this year…”

In a tweet thread, Kangana attacked Karan, saying, “This obnoxious, jealous, mean and toxic person should be held accountable for ruining the culture and environment of the film industry which was never hostile to outsiders in the days of AB or SRK.His gang and mafia PR should be raided and held accountable for harassing outsiders…”

In another post, she mentioned, “Media wrote extensively about her fall out with Karan Johar because of her friendship with SRK and movie mafia Cruella who is always looking for vulnerable outsiders saw a perfect punching bag in PC and went all out in harassing her to a point where she had to leave India.”

Kangana keeps on attacking him for his undisputed influence on the Hindi film industrycalled Karan Johar the ‘flagbearer of nepotism’ on his show ‘Koffee With Karan’ and keeps on attacking him for his undisputed influence on the Hindi film industry. (ANI)

Akali Dal Leader Atwal BJP

Akali Dal Leader Atwal, Several Others, Join BJP

Prominent Akali Dal leaders Sardar Inder Iqbal Singh Atwal and Sardar Jasjeet Singh Atwal, along with several others from Punjab, joined the Bharatiya Janta party (BJP) in New Delhi on Sunday.

They were formally inducted into the saffron camp in the presence of senior BJP leaders at the party’s national headquarters in the Capital on Sunday.
Further, according to sources in the BJP, AIADMK leader and former Rajya Sabha member, Dr Maitreyan, will also join the saffron party on Sunday.

Earlier, on Saturday, CR Kesavan, the great-grandson of India’s first Indian Governor-General, C Rajagopalachari, joined the BJP.

Kesavan resigned from Congress on February 23, saying that he has not even seen vestiges of the values that made him work for the party with dedication for over two decades.

Kesavan shared his resignation letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Twitter saying he could no longer concur with “what the party symbolises, stands for or seeks to propagate”.

His resignation came within a month of the desertion by former Union minister AK Antony’s son, Anil Antony, who parted ways with the party after coming out in support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the controversial BBC documentary series.

Anil Antony joined the BJP on April 6, in the presence of Union Ministers Piyush Goyal and V Muraleedharan. Kerala BJP chief K Surendran and senior party leaders Tarun Chugh and Anil Baluni were also present on the occasion.

Earlier on Friday, former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, joined the BJP here in the national capital.

Reddy, who served as the last chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh, joined the BJP in the presence of Union minister Prahlad Joshi, general secretary Arun Singh and MP K Laxman, at a function organised at the party headquarters.

Reddy became Andhra Pradesh’s chief minister on November 11, 2010, but resigned on March 10, 2014, to protest against the Congress party’s decision to bifurcate the state.

The developments come ahead of the next year’s Lok Sabha elections. (ANI)

MODI at Theppakadu camp

Modi Feeds Elephant At Theppakadu Camp

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on a visit to Mudumalai Tiger Reserve of Tamil Nadu, fed elephants at Theppakadu elephant camp on Sunday.

PM Modi visited the Theppakadu Elephant camp in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve on Sunday. He interacted with mahouts and kavadis at the elephant camp.
In a video of his visit, Prime Minister Modi was seen feeding sugarcane to an elephant.

He also interacted with field directors of tiger reserves that have scored highest in the recently concluded 5th cycle of the Management Effectiveness Evaluation exercise.

Earlier on Sunday, Prime Minister Modi visited Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Karnataka where he interacted with frontline field staff and Self Help Groups involved in conservation efforts.

“Spent the morning at the scenic Bandipur Tiger Reserve and got a glimpse of India’s wildlife, natural beauty and diversity,” tweeted Prime Minister.

According to PMO, Prime Minister Modi will launch the International Big Cats Alliance (IBCA) on Sunday.

In July 2019, Prime Minister Modi had called for an Alliance of Global Leaders to firmly curb poaching and illegal wildlife trade in Asia. IBCA will focus on the protection and conservation of seven major big cats of the world — Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Puma, Jaguar and Cheetah, said the PMO in a statement.

‘Reel Making Fever Has Become An Epidemic; Govt & Parents Can Stop It’

Arshad Nagrami, a social activist from Lucknow, feels short videos makers looking for instant fame on social media are becoming a nuisance in public spaces. His views:

Making ‘reels’ or short videos and uploading them on web platforms is a trend that has taken social media by storm. The easy access to smartphones with high-tech camera features helps boost this trend where people are recording their dance moves, road stunts or random events to grab attention. In this race for getting more ‘likes’ or views, it has now taken the form of an epidemic, no less.

Take, for example, the calm and picturesque waterfront of River Gomti in Lucknow. Such a beautiful road for a walk and enjoying street food from the stalls there has been completely ruined by reel makers performing stunts, and causing nuisance to other road-users. The presence of police does deter them but one cannot expect cops to be present at all such stretches and all the time in the city?

Most of these reel-makers have a single point agenda: to grab more views and ‘likes’, social etiquette and road laws be damned. It is a common site now that if there is an accident on the road or a fight takes place between road users, passersby take out their camera and start making videos. There is rarely an attempt to help the accident victim or broker peace between fighting faction. Where are we heading?

Social sites are also adding to the menace by providing financial rewards for crossing a number barrier of ‘likes’. So, there is an added financial bonus besides getting instant fame. This has led to a no-holds-barred frenzy to make short videos that can draw more viewers. The worst part of this trend is that even mainstream media at times picks up such footage and plays it on their national broadcast, further fuelling the frenzy.

To control this contagious disease, I have two suggestions: One, the state authorities should put a strict check to filter the content and penalize social media platforms for unfair practices of offering ‘financial rewards’ to such content. And, the second approach should be from the parental or familial guidance to the youth, by keeping a watch on their activities and discouraging them against it. This dual approach is what I believe can curb this social malaise.

ALSO READ: ‘Reel-Makers Compromise With Safety, Scruples’

Financial rewards should only be restricted to contents which promote better health, education, social cause, empathy, etc. This will not only discourage teens and people from wasting time on unwanted activities but will also limit the time they spend on social media for the sake of uploading foolish and dangerous activities.

The elder members of a family should spend quality time together, whereby they can put away their phones for some time too. Being glued to the phone is part of this disease which has quietly made its way into our houses and families.

These days, you hardly find children or teens in parks or fields engaged in physical activities! If, at all, there are people in parks, but most of them are busy scanning their mobile phones! This behavior needs a revolutionary change that is impossible without our own will and determination.

K’taka Polls: Cong Appoints Chandrappa As Vth Working Prez

With the Karnataka Assembly polls drawing near, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday appointed a fifth working president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee in the form of former Lok Sabha BN Chandrappa.

“Hon’ble Congress President has appointed Shri B.N. Chandrappa as Working President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, with immediate effect,” read an official release from the party on Sunday.
While Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar is the KPCC president, the party already has 4 other working presidents in the form of Ramalinga Reddy, Eshwar Khandre, Saleem Ahmed and Satish Jarkiholi.

Chandrappa was elected a Lok Sabha member from Chitradurga in 2014-19.

Chandrappa’s appointment follows the demise of KPCC working president and former MP R Dhruvanarayana.

Dhruvanarayana was a Parliamentarian from the Chamarajanagar Lok Sabha constituency. He served as a member of the Lower House from 2009 to 2019.

Earlier, on April 4, Kharge said the Congress will hold an extensive discussion on the selection of candidates for the remaining 100 Assembly seats in the state.

The Congress, on March 25, announced its first list of 124 candidates for the Assembly polls. The list included former chief minister Siddaramaiah and the party’s state president DK Shivakumar.

“There is a meeting of our selection committee in which we will hold discussions on the selection of candidates for the remaining 100 seats. People on the committee will give present their opinions after which a decision will be taken,” Kharge said.

Elections in Karnataka are slated to be held in a single phase on May 10 and the counting of votes will be held on May 13. Siddaramaiah will be contesting from the Varuna constituency DK Shivakumar has been fielded in Kanakapura.

Siddaramaiah had expressed his interest to contest from the Kolar constituency but the Congress High Command instructed him to drop the plan following disagreements between the party’s local leaders in the constituency. The party has fielded M Roopakala from the Kolar Gold Field constituency.

The ruling BJP currently holds a majority in the Assembly with 119 seats while the Congress and the JD(S) have 75 and 28 seats respectively.

All three key political players in the state — BJP, Congress and the JD(S) — have been exchanging barbs as their poll campaign moves through the gears. The latter are attempting to corner the ruling BJP on the issue of corruption.

The model code of conduct is currently in force in the state. (ANI)

Shinde In Ayodhya

Shinde To Visit Ayodhya Today

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, along with fellow Shiv Sena MPs and MLAs, will visit Ayodhya on Sunday.

This is Shinde’s first visit to the temple town since being sworn in as Maharashtra chief minister in June last year.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also left for Ayodhya from Mumbai on Sunday.

Shinde and other Shiv Sena leaders flew down to Lucknow on Saturday. Shinde was welcomed by his Uttar Pradesh counterpart Yogi Adityanath at the Lucknow airport, amid fanfare.

The Maharashtra CM will perform ‘aarti’ on the banks of the Saryu River. He will also visit the ongoing construction site of Ram Mandir.

“This is not a political visit. I keep visiting Ayodhya but this is the first time I have come here as the chief minister. All our party leaders wanted to take the blessings of Lord Ram. I want to thank Yogi-ji and his ministers who were here to welcome us,” Shinde told ANI.

To welcome Shinde, the Shiv Sena put up big banners with his image, in Ayodhya.

Before leaving for Lucknow, CM Shinde said in a press conference, “We will be going to Ayodhya to seek Lord Ram’s blessings on April 9. The call of faith and belief prompted us to undertake this visit. We will perform the Aarti. I still remember that Dharmveer Anand Dhigana (Anand Dighe, who the Maharashtra CM considers his mentor) had sent a Karsevak to Ayodhya with a silver brick. So, we have old bonding with Ram Lalla and will be visiting the temple also.”

He said the Shiv Sena leaders wanted to go to Ayodhya after getting the Bow and Arrow symbol.

“We will take part in programmes that the seers have organised in Ayodhya.

In a dig at his predecessor Uddhav Thackeray, Shinde said, “Earlier, seers were killed in Palghar, but now we will protect them.”

The Palghar incident happened during the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government headed by Uddhav. (ANI)

Amul's Foray Row Bengaluru

Amul’s Foray Row: Bengaluru Hoteliers Decide To Support State’s Farmers

In a setback for Gujarat-based dairy giant Amul, the Bruhat Bengaluru Hotels Association has decided to use only Nandini milk to “support the state’s (dairy) farmers”.

The development comes on the heels of the ruling BJP and the Opposition Congress and the JD(S) engaging in a war of words over Amul’s announcement of foraying into the Bengaluru dairy market.
In a statement, the Bruhat Bengaluru Hotels Association, without naming Amul, said Kannadigas should only promote Nandini milk products.

“We are all proud of Karnataka’s Nandini milk produced by our farmers and it should be encouraged. In our city, clean and delicious coffee stands as the backbone of snacks. And we encourage it with great pride. It is being heard that milk from other states is being shipped to Karnataka recently. We are all Nandini,” read a statement from Bruhat Bengaluru Hotels Association.

Earlier, the Congress accused the BJP of hatching a conspiracy to kill the state’s formidable dairy brand, Nandini.

On Friday, Congress leader and former chief minister Siddaramaiah said “all Kannadigas should pledge not to buy Amul products”. His statement followed speculations of a merger between the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) and Gujarat’s Anand Milk Union Limited (Amul).

“All Kannadigas have to unanimously resist the usurpation of the KMF, which has been built for the welfare of the farmers of the country. All Kannadigas should pledge not to buy Amul products”, Siddaramaiah said.

He added, “In addition to language treason by the imposition of Hindi and land treason by trespassing within the state borders, now the BJP government is going to betray the farmers by shutting down Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF), which is the livelihood of millions of dairy farming families in the country.”

Siddaramaiah also called on Chief Minister Basavaraja Bommai to immediately intervene in the matter and stop Amul from “entering (the state’s dairy market) through the back door.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who also handles the Cooperation ministry, should hold a referendum in the state in this regard, he added.

The former CM also hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shah, alleging that it was the weak BJP leadership in the state that has resulted in the KMF’s slump in business.

On Wednesday, Amul tweeted that a wave of freshness in coming to Bengaluru from Kengeri to Whitefield — from the west end of the city to the east — with the hashtag “LaunchAlert.” The cooperative said in a following tweet that quick commerce platforms will be used to facilitate milk and curd delivery. All Eyes on Russia as Its Tiny Neighbour Finland Joins Nato

Finland, a tiny Nordic country (population: 5.5 million), doesn’t usually make it to the global news headlines. It rarely makes any news that affects the rest of the world meaningfully. Recently though, it has regularly hit the headlines after being ranked the world’s happiest country for six straight years. But that is not what this column is about.

Early this month, Finland held its parliamentary elections in which the incumbent prime minister, Sanna Marin, a 37-year+old woman, was ousted when her left-of-centre Social Democratic Party (SDP) lost to two right-leaning parties, the conservative National Coalition Party (NCP) and the ultra right-wing nationalist outfit, the FinnsParty. When Marin became prime minister in 2019 at 34, she was the world’s youngest head of a government.

There is much speculation about how the new government, led by a coalition that is still being cobbled together, will formulate policies on immigration, social benefits, and unemployment subsidies at a time when Finland is reeling from the effects of the continuing rise of inflation and high levels of national debt.

Finland has a highly industrialised, largely free-market economy with a per capita GDP almost as high as that of Austria and the Netherlands and slightly above that of Germany and Belgium, but its economy has been hit in recent years by the twin effects of the Covid pandemic and Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. The latter is really the reason for the world’s eyes on Finland.

Finland has had complicated relations with Russia. For one, almost all of its eastern border is with Russia, measuring 1,340 km. Finland, which was a region governed by Sweden for centuries, became part of the Russian Empire after Sweden lost the Finnish Wars against Russia in 1808-09. It was a Duchy under Russia till it got independence in 1917. Between 1939 and 1944, Finland fought two major wars with Russia. Since then, there has been peace between the two countries and economic co-operation.

Like Sweden, Finland, while part of the European Union, has remained non-aligned with bodies such as the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato). After Russia’s offensive against Ukraine, however, Finland and Sweden sought membership in the body, which is an intergovernmental military alliance between 30 countries. Last week, after Turkey, a Nato member that had been opposing Sweden and Finland’s joint move to join Nato, approved Finland’s membership, the country became the 31st member of Nato.

Russia, predictably, views Finland’s Nato membership with concern. Ever since it attacked Ukraine, Russia’s position has been that it has been provoked by the West for its actions in Ukraine. Russian president Vladimir Putin has böamed Nato’s expansion and the new European missile defense systems as the reasons for conflict in Ukraine–accusations that the Western nations and Nato reject outright.

With Finland joining Nato last week, the tension with Russia is bound to increase. Already, Russia is believed to be amassing troops and military equipment along the border with Finland. Although Finland has significant military strength–compulsory conscription of male citizens assures the country of significant military personnel, both active and in reserve, and Finland has fared well in past wars with Russia–it is a small country with limitations to its defence capabilities. That is precisely one of the chief reasons for joining Nato. That is also why globally all eyes are on the tiny “happiest country in the world” and what happens next along its eastern border.

China flexes muscles; renames parts of NE India

On India’s long-disputed north-eastern border with China, the latest development is one that is fraught. Last week China came out with a list of names that seek to rename parts of India’s north-eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh. China has renamed a total of 11 places in Arunachal Pradesh, which it has called ‘Zangnan, the southern part of Tibet’.India has rejected the claims and the new names but this marks an escalation in the conflict over the region between two countries. Skirmishes in the region have been frequent and China’s latest moves are causing concern in New Delhi.

This is the third batch of precise locations that China has renamed–it did so before in 2017 and then again in 2021. It bolsters the country’s long-held claims that Arunachal Pradesh belongs to China. The latest list of names released officially by China has 11 places. These include two land areas, two residential areas, five mountain peaks, and two rivers.

While India has reiterated that the state and the places “renamed” by China have been and will always be part of India, the United States has waded into the controversy by “strongly opposing” China’s attempts to claim what is Indian territory.

China now poses the most challenging security challenge for India. Three years ago, there was a major skirmish at the disputed border between the two countries along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), which is a notional demarcation line that separates Indian-controlled territory from Chinese-controlled territory.

How India responds to China’s muscle flexing will be closely watched globally. China is militarily as well as economically a superior power to India and not long ago, India’s foreign minister caused a flutter when he referred to China as being much stronger and, therefore, a challenge that was formidable for India.

China’s ascension as a global power was again in focus when Chinese president Xi Jinping brokered a rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Then, recently, he visited Moscow and met Russian president Vladimir Putin even as Russia’s Ukraine offensive remains unabated.

India’s crackdown on international NGOs continues

Oxfam, a British-founded confederation of 21 independent charitable organisations focusing on the alleviation of global poverty, faces an investigation by India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on charges of violating the provisions of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010.

India has on earlier occasions cracked down on international non-governmental organisations such as Amnesty International and Greenpeace, which have had to suspend their activities in the country. The crackdown on such organisations has usually been based on allegations of funding that violates Indian laws but activists and opposition parties believe that the motivation could be uncomfortable findings and reports that such organisations have regularly produced accusing India of violating human rights, individual freedom, and environmental protection. Oxfam is the latest in the list of international non-profits to be targeted by the Indian authorities.

UK foreign secretary stirs up protests in Pakistan

When Suella Braverman, the British home secretary, in an interview alleged that British Pakistani men worked in child abuse rings or networks that targeted “vulnerable white English girls”, it set off angry reactions in Islamabad. Braverman, who is incidentally of Indian origin, was earlier in the news when she introduced the illegal migration bill that seeks to swiftly detain and deport illegal immigrants from Britain.

On her allegations against British Pakistani men, Pakistan’s foreign office reacted by saying it amounted to discrimination and signalled an intent to target and treat British Pakistanis differently. In her interview, Braverman said that British Pakistani men “see women in a demeaned and illegitimate way and who pursue an outdated and frankly heinous approach in terms of the way they behave”.

Interestingly, in a 2020 British Home Office report on child sexual abuse, it was pointed out that research on offender ethnicity is limited, and tends to rely on poor-quality data. It did, however, state that studies show white men as being the majority of offenders, in comparison with Asian or Black men.

Suffer from social anxiety? You could smell someone’s armpit!

Smelling other people’s sweat is not a proposition that most people will find appealing but a new study finds that people suffering from social anxiety could benefit from a combination of mindfulness sessions and the body odour of others.

A study conducted by the Karolinska Institute, a research-based medical institute in Sweden, showed that people suffering from social anxiety who were exposed to mindfulness and body odour of others appeared to show an improvement in their condition. Using a small sample size of 48 women, the study found that patients who completed a mindfulness session while exposed to body odours saw a 39% reduction in social anxiety, while without body odour there was a 17% reduction in anxiety scores.

Sunak To Meet Biden In Northern Ireland Next Week

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is set to meet US President Joe Biden in Belfast, Northern Ireland next week when the US president flies in to take part in events to mark the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday peace accord, reported Sky News.

Biden, who will arrive in Air Force One on Tuesday evening, is intensely proud of his Irish heritage and the US’s role in the peace accord.
He will give a key address at Ulster University’s newly opened campus on Wednesday and will have a formal meeting with Sunak, reported Sky News.

Sunak is expected to use the visit to drum up long-term investment for the nation.

A major policing operation costing around Pound 7 million and backed up by around 300 officers will be underway around the anniversary after the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) warned of the potential of dissident republicans launching attacks, reported Sky News.

MI5 recently raised the terrorism threat level in Northern Ireland to severe, meaning an attack is highly likely.

Biden will leave Northern Ireland on Wednesday for the Republic, where he will visit Dublin, Co Louth and Co Mayo, reported Sky News.

Meanwhile, Sunak on Sunday praised Northern Ireland’s landmark 1988 peace accord. He was 17 when the Good Friday Agreement was agreed, largely ending three decades of violence in the UK province.

In a statement released by Downing Street, Sunak said the signing of the Good Friday Agreement was an “incredible moment” in the UK’s history.

The agreement ended the 30-year conflict in Northern Ireland which claimed more than 3,500 lives, reported Sky News.

“It was a powerfully rare example of people doing the previously unthinkable to create a better future for Northern Ireland,” the prime minister said.

“It is that promise of a better future that we offered to everyone in Northern Ireland that I will be thinking of first and foremost over the coming days.

“It is my responsibility as the prime minister of the United Kingdom to ensure we are making good on that promise.”

Sunak was “relentlessly focused” on delivering economic growth in Northern Ireland, which he said is crucial to improving living standards, the statement added.

Sunak will participate in a number of events next week to commemorate the signing on April 10, 1998, of the US-brokered peace accord, agreed between the governments in London and Dublin, and the Northern Irish political parties.

The pair will “undertake a programme of engagements”, including a bilateral meeting, Sunak’s Downing Street office said.

Notably, the US president’s visit comes amid a heightened terror threat in Northern Ireland, and with power-sharing in Stormont still on hold because of post-Brexit tensions. (ANI)
