My Daughter Made Her Husband A PM: Sudha Murty

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s mother-in-law, Sudha Murty said that her daughter, Akshata Murty, “made her husband a Prime Minister.”

Rishi Sunak’s quick ascension to power has been highlighted before but his mother-in-law claims it was her daughter who made that possible.
His mother-in-law, Sudha Murty, has claimed in a video circulating online that because of her daughter, Rishi Sunak became the youngest prime minister of UK.

In the video, Sudha can be heard saying: “I made my husband a businessman. My daughter made her husband Prime Minister of the UK.”

“The reason is the glory of the wife. See how a wife can change a husband. But I could not change my husband. I made my husband a businessman, and my daughter made her husband a Prime Minister,” said Sudha Murty in an Instagram post.

Rishi Sunak married Akshata Murty in 2009, and the Prime Minister made a quick rise to power in the years that ensued.

The daughter of one of the world’s wealthiest billionaires and with an estimated personal fortune of around Pound 730 million, Akshata Murty is a powerful woman. Her parents, who are from India and own a tech company worth billions, similarly kept out of the limelight.

Narayana Murthy, father of Akshata Murty is one of India’s richest men and founder of the Infosys tech company.

Sunak is the youngest prime minister of UK in modern history at age 42, as well as the MP who became the Prime Minister in just seven years.

In the video of Murty’s mother, she also speaks about how her daughter has influenced the prime minister’s life in other ways, particularly his diet.

The Murthy family, she says, have long followed a tradition of fasting every Thursday.

“Yes, what should be started on Thursday, they started Infosys on Thursday, not only that! Not only that, but our son-in-law, who married our daughter, has been in England for 150 years from their ancestor’s time, but they are very religious. After getting married, he asked why you start anything on Thursday. They said that we will go to Raghavendra Swami. He fasts every Thursday after just saying good day. Our son-in-law’s mother fasts every Monday but our son-in-law fasts on Thursdays,” said Sudha.

Rishi Sunak and his wife have been subject to repeated scrutiny over the last four years due to the billionaire status of his wife’s father, which has raised questions about whether he has declared the full extent of his family’s financial interests. (ANI)

Truth Always Wins: Sooraj Pancholi On Insta

After being acquitted of abetment charges in Jia Khan’s suicide case, actor Sooraj Pancholi took to Instagram to post “The Truth Always Wins!”

The actor posted this note with folded hands and heart emoji. He wrote in hashtags# GodisGreat.

Almost 10 years after actress Jiah Khan’s death by suicide, a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Mumbai on Friday acquitted actor Sooraj Pancholi of abetment charges.

“Due to paucity of evidence, this court can’t hold you (Sooraj Pancholi) guilty, hence acquitted,” Special CBI court judge Judge AS Sayyed said while pronouncing the verdict.

Jiah Khan was found dead in her suburban home on June 3, 2013.

Based on a letter seized on June 10, which was purportedly written by the 25-year-old Jiah, Mumbai Police booked Suraj Pancholi under section 306 (abetment to suicide) and arrested him.

Sooraj, son of actors Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab, was allegedly in a relationship with Jiah.

Jiah’s mother Rabia Khan alleged that her daughter was murdered.

In October 2013, Rabia moved to the Bombay High Court seeking a CBI probe in the case while alleging that her daughter had been murdered.

On the order of the Bombay High Court, the CBI took over the probe from the Maharashtra Police in July 2014.

Rabia claimed that her daughter was in an abusive relationship with Sooraj Pancholi.

Sooraj and Jiah started dating in September 2012. (ANI)

Sania Comes Out In Support Of Indian Wrestlers

India’s ace tennis player Sania Mirza too has come out in support of wrestlers who are protesting at Jantar Mantar here in the national capital against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over allegations of sexual harassment.

Sania said in a tweet that as an athlete as well as a woman, it is too “difficult” to watch the ongoing protest and now it’s time to stand with the wrestlers in this difficult time.
“As an athlete but more as a woman this is too difficult to watch .. they’ve brought laurels to our country and we have all celebrated them, with them .. if you have done that then it’s time to now stand with them in this difficult time too .. this is a highly sensitive matter and serious allegations. I hope whatever the truth is justice is served.. sooner rather than later,” said Sania Mirza in her tweet.

Along with Sania, Indian field hockey player Rani Rampal also came forward to extend her support to the wrestlers who continue to protest at Jantar Mantar.

“Extremely painful to see our renowned wrestlers demanding justice on the streets of India it tears me apart to see my fellow athletes in this situation who have worked hard in their lives and won great laurels for our beloved country. They deserve justice,” said Rani Rampal in her tweet.

Earlier Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra on Friday came in support of the ongoing wrestlers’ protest and said that he was ‘hurt’ to see athletes on the streets demanding justice.

“It hurts me to see our athletes on the streets demanding justice. They have worked hard to represent our great nation and make us proud,” the Tokyo Olympics gold medallist said in a tweet on Friday. Indian wrestlers have been protesting at Jantar Mantar here in the national capital against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over allegations of sexual harassment.

Top Indian grapplers such as Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia, and many others wrestlers are involved in the protest against the WFI chief.

Having waited for three months, star wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia again started their protest against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on Sunday and said that they took the step after alleging that no action has been taken in the matter and said that the FIR had not been registered against the WFI chief. Police Agree To Register FIR Against WFI Prez Brij Bhushan

Delhi Police on Friday apprised the Supreme Court that it agreed to register an FIR based on the allegations levelled by wrestlers against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for Delhi Police, apprised the SC bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud that Delhi Police will register the FIR by this evening.
Appearing for the wrestlers, senior advocate Kapil Sibal urged the court to also issue directions to provide safety to a minor girl, one of the petitioner wrestlers, due to the threat to her. Sibal said he is worried about the safety of the minor girl and other wrestlers.

SG Tushar Mehta said that all these concerns can be addressed by the police.

The top court directed Delhi police to make an adequate assessment of threat perception and provide security to minor girl, who is a gold medalist. The court also asked Delhi Police to file an affidavit mentioning steps taken to provide security to the minor girl. The court listed the matter for May 5.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court issued has notice to Delhi Police on a wrestlers’ plea seeking registration of FIR against WFI president Brij Bhushan. The court has noted that there is a serious allegation that is contained in the petition by wrestlers who have represented India. The court had also clarified that the identity of the petitioners shall be redacted for the purpose of this petition.

The apex court’s direction came after Sibal along with another senior advocate Narendra Hooda pleaded for an urgent hearing on the wrestlers’ petition.

Sibal had apprised the SC that these are women wrestlers which include a minor.

Wrestlers have urged the top court to issue directions to Delhi police to lodge the FIR against Brij Bhushan as there is an inordinate delay in doing so.

WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was accused by the wrestlers of sexual misconduct and intimidation. The government established a five-member oversight council to oversee WFI operations. Boxer Mary Kom is heading the oversight committee which was formed to probe into the allegations levelled against the WFI and its chief Singh and other coaches.

On Monday, Delhi Police sought a report from the investigation committee set up by the Union Sports Ministry to investigate the allegations and has begun a probe into the fresh complaint by wrestlers.

After a protest led by some prominent wrestlers of the country this January, the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports announced the formation of an ‘oversight committee’ to probe allegations levelled against the WFI and its chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and other coaches.

The committee was tasked with submitting a report on the issue to the ministry.

Top wrestlers have resumed their sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar here in the national capital after filing a complaint at the Connaught Place police station on Friday (April 21) stating that seven female wrestlers, including one minor, were harassed and exploited by Brij Bhushan in his capacity as WFI chief.

Delhi Commission For Women (DCW) has issued a notice to Delhi Police to register an FIR on the issue.

Top Indian wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Ravi Dahiya, and Sakshi Malik, held a sit-in protest in Jantar Mantar in January this year, demanding that Brij Bhushan be removed from the head office and the Wrestling Federation of India be disbanded.

They had accused the WFI body and its chief of sexual harassment and mistreatment of wrestlers. (ANI)

BBC Chairman Resigns

BBC Chairman Resigns Over Loan To Former UK PM Boris

Richard Sharp, the British Broadcasting Corporation’s (BBC) chairman, resigned on Friday after it was discovered that he had concealed his role in helping to arrange a loan of roughly USD1 million for former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, according to CNN.

As the loan was taken before he was appointed director of the public broadcaster, he has previously denied involvement in the arrangement and the possibility of a conflict of interest.
Weeks before the then-PM Johnson named Sharp for his role in 2021, the former banker faced pressure to resign after it was revealed that he served as an intermediary while Johnson was trying to get the loan.

According to CNN, the violation, according to Sharp, was “inadvertent and not material,” but he insisted he was leaving to “prioritise the interests of the BBC.” Earlier in February, Richard Sharp said he “didn’t arrange the loan,” suggesting he acted as a “sort of introduction agency.”

The BBC, which is supported by an annual licence fee of £159 (USD193) collected from each household with a television or streaming device, has drawn attention this year after suspending its popular football commentator Gary Lineker for opposing the government’s immigration policy, CNN reported.

Nevertheless, the former England football captain eventually got his job back after his fellow presenters insisted on not going on-air without him. (ANI)

‘There Is Pressure On Star Sportspersons To Keep Quiet On Wrestlers Protest’

Aniket Rai, a student of journalism, recounts his meeting with the protesting women wrestlers at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi. In his own words:

The women wrestlers, who are world champions and winners of medals at top national and international competitive events, were extremely sad and angry. They said they have been taken for a ride. They said that due to the insistence of the Union Sports Minister, Anurag Thakur, who assured them earlier that their grievances would be resolved, they stopped their first round of protest soon after they first registered it. And, yet, they had to wait for three months, and nothing came out of it. Their struggle and suffering has all gone in vain.

Another world champion, Bajrang Punia, who is in active solidarity with the women wrestlers and is sitting with them in protest at Jantar Mantar, said that despite several pleas and protests, no FIR has been filed against the BJP MP and president of the Wrestling Federation of India, Brij Bhushan Sharma.

Several women wrestlers have accused the BJP leader of sexual harassment, including the harassment of a wrestler who was a minor. Indeed, the UP-Haryana binary which is being created, is a false binary – I think the women wrestlers have united the people in the two states in supporting their cause, including farmers.

It’s tragic and unfortunate that no action is being taken against this man only because he belongs to the ruling party in the Centre. I mean, India is a democracy, and here are our best women champions, who have made the country proud in the Olympics and international competitions; they are seeking justice, and nothing seems to be moving! Indeed, if this is the fate of such celebrities and champions, who are known all over the country, what will happen to women and girls from ordinary and unknown families — the poor, the middle class and lower income groups – who will listen to them and their plight!

Several people have joined the protest in solidarity, including sportspersons and ordinary citizens. The wrestlers said that they are totally united despite the threats etc, and the protests will continue till the BJP MP is arrested. Indeed, PT Usha is holding an important position in the Indian Olympic Association. The report on the women wrestler’s complaint has been presided over by Mary Com, a boxing champion and role mode among women and athletes in our country. That report is not being made public, and even she and PT Usha seem to have chosen silence. Truly, justice is eluding the women wrestlers, despite the national outrage and their steadfast protest.

Clearly, there is huge pressure, invisible but apparent, from the current ruling dispensation in Delhi. People seem to be scared of this government. That is why other sportspersons, like nationally famous, iconic figures in cricket and badminton, etc., are not coming out in support of the women wrestlers. That too is a dark irony! Now that the Supreme Court has taken the issue up, let us hope for the best.

Criminal Case Against Sukhbir Singh Badal

SC Quashes Criminal Case Against Sukhbir Singh Badal

In a relief to Sukhbir Singh Badal, the Supreme Court on Friday quashed Punjab’s Hoshiarpur Court order summoning him (Sukhbir Singh Badal), Parkash Singh Badal and others in the alleged case of forgery and cheating filed against them, in the controversy over the dual constitution of Shiromani Akali Dal.

“We quash and set the impugned order including trial court summons,” the top court said.
The court allowed the appeal filed by Sukhbir Singh Badal, Parkash Singh Badal and Daljit Singh Cheema, challenging the proceedings pending before Punjab’s Hoshiarpur Court in the alleged case of forgery and cheating filed against them, in the controversy over the dual constitution of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).

A bench headed by Justice MR Shah has earlier kept its order reserved after hearing the submission of all the parties connected to the matter.

Prakash Singh Badal, Sukhbir Singh Badal and Daljeet Singh Cheema have filed a plea in SC in a matter relating to the complaint filed by Hoshiarpur resident Balwant Singh Khera.

Balwant Singh Khera had filed a criminal complaint before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate back in 2009 against the three.

According to the said complaint, SAD was accused of submitting two different constitutions, that is, one with the Gurdwara Election Commission (GEC) and the second with the Election Commission of India (ECI) to seek recognition as a political party.

The criminal complaint was premised on the allegation that the party has claimed to be a secular party and given a declaration to abide by the principles of secularism in its constitution filed before ECI while it contests elections for a religious body, Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, thereby being a religious party.

KV Vishwanathan, Senior Advocate appeared for Prakash Singh Badal. RS Cheema, Senior advocate appeared for Sukhbir Singh Badal. Sandeep Kapur, Advocate appeared for Daljit Singh Cheema. Advocates Prashant Bhushan and Indira Unninayar appeared for Balwant Singh Khera.

It was argued before the court that being religious does not run contrary to the principles of secularism and merely because a political outfit is contesting elections to a Gurdwara committee does not mean that it is not secular.

It was argued that the criminal case with allegations of forgery and cheating over the constitution of the party filed before ECI and GEC, therefore, had no basis.

The petitions were filed by Karanjawala and Co. Advocates and the brief was led by Nandini Gore and Sandeep Kapur, Senior Partners along with Virinder Pal Singh Sandhu, Aditi Bhatt, Tarannum Cheema, Tahira Karanjawala, Niharika Karanjawala, Arjun Sharma, Apoorva Pandey, Gudipati G Kashyap, Principal Associates, Sanya Dua, Yash Dubey, Rose Verma, Associates. Neeraj Chopra India's Paris Olympics 2024

Neeraj Comes In Support Of Wrestlers’ Protest

Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra on Friday came in support of the ongoing wrestlers’ protest, and said that he was ‘hurt’ to see athletes on the streets demanding justice.

“It hurts me to see our athletes on the streets demanding justice. They have worked hard to represent our great nation and make us proud,” Tokyo Olympics gold medallist said in a tweet on Friday.
He said,” As a nation, we are responsible for safeguarding the integrity and dignity of every individual, athlete or not.”

“What’s happening should never happen. This is a sensitive issue, and must be dealt with in an impartial and transparent manner. Pertaining authorities must take quick action order to ensure that justice is served,” Chopra added.

Indian wrestlers have been protesting at Jantar Mantar here in the national capital against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over allegations of sexual harassment.

Top Indian grapplers such as Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia, and many other wrestlers are involved in the protest against the WFI chief.

Having waited for three months, star wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia again started their protest against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on Sunday and said that they took the step after alleging that no action has been taken in the matter and said that the FIR has not been registered against the WFI chief.

Ace India wrestler Sakshi Malik broke down while interacting with the media as wrestlers protest at Jantar Mantar.

“We wanted to file a sexual harassment FIR against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. We got a complaint filed two days ago but FIR has not been registered yet. There are seven female wrestlers and one of them is a minor. We want the investigation to happen fast. It is a sensitive matter. We are being framed as liars which we cannot bear. We are waiting for two and a half months now but no one is listening. People are saying we are spent force that is why we are protesting. We just won a medal at CWG 2022,” Sakshi Malik told the media at Jantar Mantar.

“It is being heard that we are finished, that is why we are protesting. For two and a half months the government has not taken any action. We cannot reveal the name of a minor. Otherwise, her name and career will get spoilt,” she added.

Earlier in January this year, top Indian wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Ravi Dahiya and Sakshi Malik, held a sit-in protest in Jantar Mantar, demanding that Brij Bhushan be removed from the head office and Wrestling Federation of India be disbanded.

They had accused the body and its chief of sexual harassment and mistreatment of wrestlers.

Following the protest, in January, the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports announced the formation of an ‘oversight committee’ to probe allegations levelled against the Wrestling Federation of India and its chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and other coaches.

The committee was given the task of submitting a report on the issue to the Ministry.

Earlier, India’s first individual Olympic gold medal-winning shooter and member of the Olympics Athletes Commission, Abhinav Bindra expressed support for Indian wrestlers who are protesting at Jantar Mantar in the national capital against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over allegations of sexual harassment.

Abhinav Bindra supported the wrestlers in their protest with a poignant tweet on Wednesday.

“As athletes, we train hard every day to represent our country on the international stage. It is deeply concerning to see our athletes finding it necessary to protest on the streets regarding the allegations of harassment in the Indian wrestling administration,” Bindra tweeted.

“My heart goes out to all those who have been affected. We must ensure that this issue is handled properly, with the athletes’ concerns heard and addressed fairly and independently. This incident highlights the crucial need for a proper safeguarding mechanism that can prevent harassment and ensure justice for those affected. We must work towards creating a safe and secure environment for all athletes to thrive in,” he added. (ANI)
