Imran’s Aide Fawad Resigns From Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf

Pakistan’s former Minister of Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry, who is a close aide of Imran Khan on Wednesday resigned from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Taking to his Twitter handle, Fawad Chaudhry said he has decided to “take break” from politics and announced to part ways from Imran Khan.
Fawad Chaudhry tweeted, “Ref. My earlier statement where I unequivocally condemned 9th May incidents, I have decided to take a break from politics, therefore, I have resigned from party position and parting ways from Imran Khan.”

This comes after Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on Wednesday said that the government is considering imposing a ban on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) over the incidents that took place on May 9, Dawn reported.

Speaking to media persons in Islamabad, Khawaja Asif said, “A decision has not been taken yet, but a review is surely underway.” He called the vandalism of military installations across Pakistan on May 9 as “coordinated attacks” planned by PTI chairman Imran Khan, according to Dawn.

Khawaja Asif said, “There is a lot of evidence and their people are telling themselves that they were briefed about this beforehand,” as per the Dawn report. He further said, “I feel that his struggle of a year … all his plans failed and this was his last move against the armed forces.”

Fawad Chaudhry’s resignation comes as PTI Chairman Imran Khan was addressing the nation.

On Tuesday, former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan called Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders’ exodus as “forced divorces,” Geo News reported.

His statement came after PTI leader Shireen Mirza announced her decision to leave PTI and politics. Taking to his Twitter handle, Imran Khan said that a new phenomenon of “forced divorces” has emerged for PTI.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan tweeted, “We had all heard about forced marriages in Pakistan but for PTI a new phenomenon has emerged, forced divorces. Also wondering where have all the human rights organizations in the country disappeared.”

Imran Khan’s statement comes as PTI leaders have been announcing their departure from the party. While leaving the party, the leaders have majorly cited PTI’s “policy of violence” as the reason behind their decision, as per the Geo News report.

Shireen Mazari on Tuesday announced her decision to quit PTI and politics, ARY News reported. Mazari’s announcement came after incidents in Pakistan on May 9 and 10 which she strongly condemned.

She announced, “From today onwards, I am no longer a part of PTI or any political party.” Shireen Mazari expressed her commitment to her children and her mother and stressed that they are her top priority at this time, ARY News reported.

While addressing a press conference, Shireen Mazari said, “I condemn the incidents of May 9 and 10 in the strongest possible terms,” as per the ARY News report. Mazari said that she has personally taken the initiative to start a probe into the matter by approaching the Islamabad High Court to ensure a fair probe.

People who have left Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) include Fayazul Hassan Chohan, Abdul Razaq Khan Niazi, Shireen Mazari, Makhdoom Iftikharul Hassan Gillani, Khawaja Qutab Fareed Koreja, Aamer Mahmood Kiani, Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain, Aftab Siddiqui, Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah and Usman Tarakai, Geo News reported.

Earlier on May 18, Imran Khan offered sympathies to all those who under pressure were made to leave Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Imran Khan tweeted, “My sympathies go to all those who under pressure have been made to leave the party. And I commend and salute all the senior members who are resisting the extreme pressure to quit the party. The nation will always remember them for standing up for Haqeeqi Azaadi.”(ANI)

Gujarat HC Stays Proceedings Against Delhi LG In 2002 Assault Case

The Gujarat High Court has stayed the trial against Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena in an alleged assault case filed by activist Medha Patkar, by taking into account the constitutional protection provided to him till he holds the LG office.

The matter pertains to the complaint lodged by activist Medha Patkar in 2002 against VK Saxena and three others accusing them of allegedly assaulting her.
The Gujarat HC on Tuesday restrained a lower Court in Ahmedabad from going ahead with the trial against Delhi LG by taking into account his contention that he was provided protection under the Constitution till he occupies the office of the LG.

The HC said that the contentions raised by Saxena’s counsel “require consideration” and also issued notices to Patkar.

It also noted the submission of Saxena’s counsel that the delay in the trial in the 2002 case was due to the adjournment applications moved by complainant Medha Patkar on 94 occasions.

In the petition, Saxena contented that Patkar “falsely implicated” him as he had exposed her “anti-Gujarat” and “anti-Sardar Sarovar Project” activities under the guise of ‘Narmada Bachao Andolan’ in the year 2000.

His counsel submitted that the Delhi LG has been ab intio vigorously defending the “motivated, vexatious and vindictive” prosecution instituted by the complainant, Medha Patkar.

Saxena, who has challenged the May 8, 2023 order of the trial court, also sought an interim stay on further proceedings which was granted by the High Court.

“Meanwhile, ad-interim relief (of stay of Trial Court order) in terms of para 11 (B) qua the present petitioner (VK Saxena) Direct service is permitted,” said Justice M K Thakker in the interim order passed on May 23.

The HC said the contentions raised by Saxena’s counsel “requires consideration” and issued notices to Patkar and the state returnable on June 19.

Senior advocate Jal S Unwalla and advocate Ajay Kumar Choksi, appearing for the LG, submitted that he has been protected by Article 361 (2) (3) of the Constitution and the trial court has arrived at apparently erroneous findings that granting protection to him and recording statements of witnesses after he demits office of LG would delay the trial.

Taking on record the arguments of Saxena’s counsel, the HC stated “In view of the aforesaid submissions, this Court finds that the matter requires consideration and notice is required to be issued. Hence, Notice returnable on June 19, 2023.”

Saxena’s advocates relied upon the chart placed in the petition to buttress that delay in the trial of the case was due to the non-cooperation of Patkar who from June 20, 2005, to February 01, 2023, moved applications for adjournments more than 94 times.

“The said record has been grossly overlooked by the Trial Court while arriving to the irrational and illogical conclusions with respect to the delay”, Saxena’s counsel had argued.

The counsel submitted, “The delay that occurred is at the instance of the complainant (Medha Patkar). The credit of delay cannot be bestowed upon the petitioner to deny the protection, which is precisely available under the Constitution. To secure the presence of Medha Patkar for recording her evidence is like an old shoe to mull over”.

The petition filed by Saxena seeking to set aside the Trial Court order of May 08, 2023, blamed Patkar for the delay in the trial.

“After issuance of summons, in the year 2005, she did not appear and sought for more than 46 adjournments for recording her evidence and ignored and avoided the process of law and appeared before the trial court for the first time in 2012, seven years after the issuance of summons,” the plea stated.

The petition pointed out that after 20 adjournments, Patkar appeared and concluded her examination in chief and for a long period she remained absent for her cross-examination and took another 24 adjournments.

The petition narrated the sequence of events in the trial of the case.

The petition by Saxena stated that the Trial Court ought to have verified the record on, the “conduct” of Patkar and her participation in the trial. (ANI)

Modi Raises Issue Of Attacks On Temples In Australia

Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is on a three-day visit to Australia, on Wednesday raised the issue of attacks on temples in the country and said that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had assured to take “strict actions against such elements in the future.”

During a joint address with his Australian counterpart Albanese, PM Modi said, “PM Anthony Albanese and I have in the past discussed the issue of attack on temples in Australia and activities of separatist elements. We discussed the matter today also. We will not accept any elements that harm the friendly and warm ties between the India-Australia relationship by their action or thoughts. PM Albanese assured me once again today that he will take strict actions against such elements in the future also.
Notably, several cases of Khalistani extremism and brawls between Khalistani activists and pro-India demonstrators have recently come to the fore in several parts of Australia. Indian flags were burnt and even a Hindu temple was vandalised recently in Australia.

Earlier, Albanese during his India visit in March had said that Australia won’t tolerate any extreme actions and attacks that took place in religious buildings, and there is no place for such action against Hindu temples.

Responding to a media query about the assurances that the Australian PM gave to his Indian counterpart, Albanese said, “I gave him the assurance that Australia is a country that respects people’s faith. That we don’t tolerate the sort of extreme actions and attacks that we have seen on religious buildings, be they Hindu temples, mosques, synagogues, or churches. This has no place in Australia.”

“And we will take every action through our police and also our security agencies to make sure that anyone responsible for this faces the full force of the law. We’re a tolerant multicultural nation, and there is no place in Australia for this activity,” the statement quoted him saying.

Earlier in March, addressing India-Australia: Exchange of Agreements and Press Statements, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the Australian PM, in light of the recent attacks on temples in Australia had assured that the safety and well-being of the Indian community in Australia is a priority for him.

“Since the last few weeks, news of attacks on temples in Australia are coming regularly. It is natural that such news worries people in India. I have raised these concerns with Prime Minister Albanese who has assured me that the safety of the Indian community is a special priority for him,” PM Modi said.

In March this year, Shree Laxmi Narayan Temple in Australia’s Brisbane was vandalised by pro-Khalistan supporters.

Sarah Gates, who is the Director of Hindu Human Rights said, “This latest hate crime is a pattern of Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) globally, clearly attempting to terrorise Australian Hindus. Coupled with a barrage of propaganda, illegal signs, and cyberbullying, the organisation intends to present all-pervasive threats, fear, and intimidation,” reported The Australia Today.

On January 16, Shri Shiva Vishnu Temple in Australia’s Carrum Downs was vandalised with anti-Hindu graffiti.

On January 12, the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Australia’s Mill Park was smeared with anti-India and anti-Hindu graffiti.

The temple was vandalised by anti-India elements with anti-India slogans written on the temple’s walls, located in the suburb of Mill Park, The Australia Today reported. (ANI)

New Parliament building

Almost All Oppo Parties To Boycott New Parliament Building Inauguration

Congress and 18 other opposition parties on Wednesday issued a joint statement to boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament building on May 28.

The joint statement of the opposition parties said: “Undemocratic acts are not new to the Prime Minister, who has relentlessly hollowed out the Parliament. Opposition Members of Parliament have been disqualified, suspended and muted when they raised the issues of the people of India.”
The statement further said MPs from the Treasury benches have disrupted Parliament. Many controversial legislations, including the three farm laws, have been passed with almost no debate, and Parliamentary Committees have been practically made defunct. The new Parliament building has been built at great expense during a once-in-a-century pandemic with no consultation with the people of India or MPs, for whom it is apparently being built, the opposition parties said.

“When the soul of democracy has been sucked out from the Parliament, we find no value in a new building. We announce our collective decision to boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament building,” the statement added.

Amid the opposition’s objection to Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating the new Parliament building, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Wednesday said that the party will boycott the ceremony slated to take place on May 28.

“All opposition parties have decided to boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament building on May 28 and we will also do the same,” said Sanjay Raut.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) announced that it would also boycott the inauguration ceremony.

RJD Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha said that there is a need for course correction with the entire Parliament Building inauguration.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav double-downed the opposition’s stand on the boycott.

“We will boycott this (the inauguration of the new Parliament building),” said Tejashwi Yadav.

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MP K Keshava Rao said that though the party has not decided yet, it is unlikely to attend the ceremony.

“We have not taken any decision yet, we are yet to take a call. It is unlikely that we will attend but we will announce our decision tomorrow,” said BRS MP K Keshava Rao.

A senior leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) said that the party will stand with other like-minded opposition parties regarding the inaugural function of the new parliament building.

“NCP will not attend the inaugural function of the vew Parliament Building, the party has decided to stand with other like-minded opposition parties on this issue,” said Spokesperson, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP),” the NCP leader said.

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) will also boycott the new Parliament building inauguration.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Tiruchi Siva confirmed that the party will boycott the inauguration.

“Dmk also to boycott parliament inauguration,” Tiruchi Siva confirms to ANI.

Invitations for the inauguration of the new Parliament building slated on May 28 have been sent to various leaders across the country including the former Speakers and Chairmen of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha respectively, sources said on Tuesday.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) announced a boycott of the ceremony.

CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP Dr John Brittas confirmed the news to ANI.

Meanwhile, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury accused PM Modi of “bypassing” the President.

“Modi bypassed the President when the foundation stone for the new Parliament building was laid. Now too at the inauguration. Unacceptable. Constitution Art 79: “There shall be a Parliament for the Union which shall consist of the President and two Houses…” CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury tweeted.

“Only when the President of India summons the Parliament can it meet? The President begins, annually, Parliamentary functioning by addressing the joint session. The first business Parliament transacts each year is the “Motion of Thanks” to the President’s Address,” he tweeted.

Earlier, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) announced to boycott the inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament building by PM Modi.

“Aam Aadmi Party will boycott the inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament building on 28th May. AAP has taken this decision in view of the questions being raised regarding the matter of not inviting the President to the inauguration ceremony,” AAP said.

TMC MP Derek O’Brien took to Twitter to announce the party’s decision.

“Parliament is not just a new building; it is an establishment with old traditions, values, precedents and rules – it is the foundation of Indian democracy. PM Modi doesn’t get that For him, Sunday’s inauguration of the new building is all about I, ME, MYSELF. So count us out,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile, Congress sources said, “Congress is likely to boycott the inauguration programme of the new Parliament building to be held on May 28.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will dedicate to the nation the new Parliament building on May 28.

Invitations have been sent in both physical and digital forms to the MPs of both Houses.

President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar are likely to release congratulatory messages on the occasion of the inauguration of the new Parliament building on May 28, sources said.

The present building of the Parliament was completed in 1927, and is now going to be almost 100 years old. The lack of space was being experienced in this building as per the present requirements. In both Houses, there was also a lack of convenient arrangements for the sitting of the MPs which was affecting the efficiency of the work of the Members.

Considering the above, both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha passed resolutions urging the government to construct a new building for the Parliament. Consequently, on 10 December 2020, the foundation stone of the new building of Parliament was laid by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The newly constructed Parliament building has been built in record time with quality construction.

Now the newly constructed building of Parliament, which will work to further enrich India’s glorious democratic traditions and constitutional values, is also equipped with state-of-the-art facilities which will help the Members to perform their functions in a better way.

The new Parliament building will enable 888 members to sit in the Lok Sabha.

In the present building of the Parliament, there is a provision for the sitting of 543 Members in the Lok Sabha and 250 in the Rajya Sabha. Keeping in view the future requirements, arrangements have been made for a meeting of 888 members in the Lok Sabha and 384 members in the Rajya Sabha in the newly constructed building of the Parliament. The joint session of both Houses will be held in the Lok Sabha Chamber. (ANI)

After Chennai Super Kings bowlers bundled out the batting lineup of the Gujarat Titans, CSK entered the final defeating GT by 15 runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium here in Chennai on Tuesday.

CSK bowlers collectively weakened the GT’s batting unit. Spinner Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the bowlers, he dismissed two batters by conceding only 18 runs. Maheesh Theekshana, Matheesha Pathirana and Deepak Chahar took two wickets each.
Chasing a total of 173, GT openers started slow and steady. However, CSK blowers got the first breakthrough early in the innings as Deepak Chahar cleared up Wriddhiman Saha in the 3rd over.

CSK’s Maheesh Theekshana got the second wicket of GT when he dismissed skipper Hardik Pandya in the 5.5 overs. He scored 8 off 7 balls.

Trying to steer the innings after losing quick wickets, GT reached to 50-run mark in 7.3 overs.

As the required run rate kept on rising, the GT batter got under pressure to hit the boundary and in the process they lost another wicket in the 10.3 over. Ravindra Jadeja cleared up Dasun Shanaka who was batting at 17 off 16 balls.

CSK did not give any opportunity to GT for a comeback, they kept on collecting wickets at regular intervals of time. In the 12.5 over, Jadeja again stuck the wicket and dismissed David Miller cheaply at 4 off 6 balls. In the next over, Deepak Chahar got the massive breakthrough of in-form batter Shubman Gill. After that Gaikwad and Devon Conway batted well and helped CSK put on 49 without the loss of any wicket in first six overs of powerplay.

The four-time champions went past the 50-run mark in just 6.1 overs.

Gaikwad looked in great touch and went onto notch-up his half-century in 36 balls.

In the next over CSK lost another wicket in the form of opener Conway as Mohammed Shami sent him packing for 40 to leave CSK in trouble at 125/4.

Ambati Rayudu and Ravindra Jadeja batted sensibly to take Chennai close to 150.

Rashid Khan then dismissed Rayudu for 17 from 9 balls as CSK lost their fifth wicket for 148.

After Rayudu’s wicket there was a huge roar from Chennai crowd as Mahendra Singh Dhoni walked out to bat. Dhoni along with Ravindra Jadeja took CSK past 150-run mark in 18.2 overs.
