Imran Khan Pakistan

Imran Khan Arrested: Here Is All You Need To Know

Pakistan, a country often referred to as a “failed state”, is now looking at a stark future with financial crisis and political instability after the arrest of ex-Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan today outside the Islamabad High Court.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan was arrested by Rangers personnel from Islamabad High Court (IHC) — acting on National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) warrant.
The PTI chairman was arrested as part of NAB’s investigation in the Al-Qadir Trust case ahead of his appearance before the IHC to seek bail in multiple FIRs registered against him.

The former prime minister, along with his wife Bushra Bibi and other PTI leaders, is facing a NAB inquiry related to a settlement between the PTI government and a property tycoon, which reportedly caused a loss of 190 million pounds to the national exchequer.

As per the charges, Khan and other accused allegedly adjusted Rs50 billion — 190 million pounds at the time — sent by Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA) to the government.

They are also accused of getting undue benefit in the form of over 458 kanals of land at Mouza Bakrala, Sohawa, to establish Al Qadir University.

It appears Khan got wind of his arrest hours earlier as before leaving for the court the PTI chief said: “If someone has a warrant, they should directly bring it to me. Bring the warrant, my lawyer will be there. I’m ready to go to the jail myself.”

He said, “I am ready to die than live under these duffers, the question is are you ready?”

“My reply to ISPR & attempts by PDM & their handlers to arrest me for two reasons: one to prevent me from campaigning because Insha Allah when elections are announced I will be doing jalsas, two to prevent me from mobilising the masses for street movement in support of Constitution if PDM govt & their handlers refuse to obey the SC & violate Constitution on holding of elections,” said Imran Khan.

PTI chief Imran Khan doubled down on his allegations against a serving senior military officer, who he has accused on several occasions of hatching a plot to assassinate him.

His biting rejoinder comes a day after the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that “irresponsible and baseless allegations” by Imran against the said military officer without evidence were “extremely unfortunate, deplorable and unacceptable”.

During a rally on Saturday, the PTI chairman had once again named a senior intelligence official for orchestrating plans to murder him. “I am on the roads despite verifiable threats to my life. I have already escaped an assassination attempt once. On the second occasion, I was able to sniff out murder planning,” he had said.

This was not the first time the ex-premier has made these claims. After an assassination attempt last year, Imran had held Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and the senior intelligence official as being responsible for the bid to assassinate him and demanded they resign.

In a video message shared on Tuesday, Imran replied to the ISPR and “attempts by PDM and their handlers” regarding his arrest. He said that he was departing for the federal capital as he was scheduled to appear before two courts.

“Before I leave, I want to say two things. Firstly, the ISPR has issued a statement that the institution has been disrespected — the army has been disrespected [by] naming an intelligence officer that has tried to kill me twice.

“ISPR sahib, listen to me carefully. Respect is not [confined] to a single institution; respect should be for every single citizen,” he said.

“This man tried to kill me twice and whenever an investigation is carried out, I will prove that it was this man and there is a whole gang with him,” Imran said, adding that the nation was well aware of who was standing with the officer in question.

“My question is: [Despite being] a country’s ex-prime minister — because this man’s name has come forward — [why was] I unable to register a first information report (FIR)?”

He said that the truth would only surface once an investigation is carried out. “If he was innocent, it would have been revealed,” the PTI chief said, terming the officer in question to be such a “powerful personality” that he was unable to register a case despite being in power in Punjab.

He said that two senior police officials had refused to become a part of the joint investigation team (JIT) formed by the Punjab government to investigate the attack on his life in Wazirabad. “Who was behind it? Who was this powerful?”

He alleged that when the JIT determined that three shooters were involved in the incident, the team itself was “sabotaged” and that four Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) officials changed their statements.

“The prosecutor general investigated. He said action should be taken against the four because they tried to sabotage [the JIT]. Who was behind them? Who was this powerful?”

The PTI chief further claimed that he would prove that the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) had taken over the Judicial Complex in Islamabad the night before he went to attend a hearing in the Toshakhana case in March.

He also said that the plan hatched by “Dirty Harry” involved a gang of people, adding that if God willed, he was ready to die at their hands. He ended his video message by calling on the nation to “get ready”.

Islamabad police released a statement quoting Inspector General (IG) Akbar Nasir Khan as saying that Imran had been arrested in the “Qadir Trust case”.

The police chief also said that the situation in Islamabad was “normal”, adding that Section 144 had been imposed in the city and action would be taken against violators.

In a pre-recorded video that comes to post his arrest outside the Islamabad High Court (IHC), he said, “My fellow Pakistanis, when these words of mine reach you I will already be closed inside in an unlawful case. After this, you all should realise that fundamental rights, law and democracy have been buried. Maybe it is possible that I won’t get a chance to talk to you again. That’s why I want to talk about two-three things.”

The pre-recorded video was shared by Ihtisham Ul Haq. Further, the ex-PM urged Pakistani citizens to “come out as “freedom is not served in a plate.”

“I appeal today to everyone that you all have to come out. Freedom is not given on a plate — you have to work hard and struggle for it,” he said.

Meanwhile, PTI Secretary General Asad Umar tweeted that a six-member committee, headed by PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi, would determine the next course of action.

“Pakistan’s biggest political leader has been arrested,” Umar said. “The whole world is being shown that there is no law in the country,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile, the PTI has condemned the arrest of the party chairman terming it an “abduction” by the law enforcement agency and urged the supporters and workers to stage protests across the country.

Reacting to the “illegal” move, PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi disapproved of his party chief’s arrest. “The entire nation should immediately take to the streets,” he said asking everyone to come out in protest.

Meanwhile, the IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq took notice of the matter, and summoned the Islamabad IGP and the interior secretary within “15 minutes,” reported Geo News.

He also directed the additional attorney general to appear before the court in 15 minutes and instructed him to immediately find out who was behind the arrest.

“If an inquiry has to be conducted, action will also be taken against the prime minister and ministers,” the chief justice said.

Subsequently, Islamabad IGP Dr Khan appeared at the IHC and submitted a copy of the NAB’s warrant. He said the anti-graft watchdog utilised the help of any law enforcement agency as per its requirements, reported Geo News.

Meanwhile, IHC CJ Farooq inquired from the additional attorney general whether Khan’s arrest was legal. “Where will we stand if the [legal] system breaks down? This matter is related to the functioning of the system,” the judge observed.

Subsequently, the court summoned DG NAB and the anti-graft body’s prosecutor general to appear in person in 30 minutes.

Following the arrest of Imran Khan today, a series of protest across Pakistan including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Faisalabad, Karachi, Quetta, Mardan, Bannu, Chilas has been unleashed by the PTI cadres.

PTI activists resorted to stone pelting on houses, offices and vehicles, burning of banners and tyres and blocking roads were reported.

In Faisalabad, a mob pelted stones on Rana Sanaullah’s house. Prominent journalist Talat Hussain informed those PTI protestors are at GHQ in Rawalpindi and the residence of Corps Commander Lahore. “They can be seen vandalising CC residence,” he added.

Talat cautioned, “After the attacks on GHQ and Corps Commander’s Lahore house, anything can happen now. The first target is to deal with the rioters, perpetrators and those who spread them. Time is short and conditions are very bad.”

Protesters in Pakistan have entered compounds of army commanders in Lahore and Rawalpindi according to multiple Pakistan media reports after Imran Khan’s arrest.

Pakistan media reports scenes of absolute chaos at Pakistan Army GHQ. Imran Khan supporters entered the Peshawar cantonment while chanting slogans against the army.

“First reaction against Imran Khan’s arrest is a big procession moving towards Army Headquarters where there is a big chance of violence and killings. Khan was grossly manhandled and almost half-conscious when pushed into a police /Army van. His lawyers were also beaten,” tweeted Shaheen Sebai, an independent journalist.

There are reports of PTI supporters breaking into the residence of a military officer in the cantonment area of Lahore. People are storming the army GHQ in Rawalpindi – the absolute seat of power.

Journalist Murtaza Ali Shah shared this information in a tweet, saying, “PTI supporters break into military officer’s house in Lahore Cantt”.

He also shared a video showing a group of men, some of them with their faces partly covered, entering a gated premises with sticks. They were later seen using sticks to hit walls.

Men in uniform could also be seen on the premise. Protestors storm of Lahore Corps Commanders’ Flag Staff House which was once the house of Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan.

PTI workers from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa gathered on the streets of Lakki Marwat district under the leadership of provincial party president Dr Muhammad Iqbal against the arrest of Imran.

The PTI supporters resorted to burning tyres and closed down the Indus Highway.

Meanwhile, shutters of shops were closed down by PTI supporters in Peshawar.

Also, section 144 was enforced across Punjab and Islamabad after Imran Khan’s arrest.

PTI protesters also gathered near the Askari Check Post outside the cantonment area in Quetta, reported Dawn.

In Lahore, PTI supporters led by Senator Ejaz Chaudhry gathered at the Liberty Chowk. Dawn.com’s correspondent at the scene said party workers had also closed down Akbar Chowk, Peco Road, Main Canal Road and Faisal Town.

The demonstrators burnt tyres and chanted slogans against the coalition government. Outside Imran’s Zaman Park residence, PTI supporters also tore down government banners.

In Karachi, both lanes of the Sharea Faisal were blocked after PTI MNAs and MPAs blocked the roads.

Demonstrations were also reported in Peshawar’s Hashtnagri.

Refuge In Assam After Violence

Want To Ban Polygamy In State: Himanta Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that the state government wants to ban polygamy in the state and has decided to form an expert committee to check for legal provisions for the same.

CM Himanta Sarma said that the state government wants to ban polygamy in the state and added that an expert committee will be formed to check if the state has the authority to prohibit polygamy in the region.
“We are not going through Uniform Civil Code (UCC), but we want to ban polygamy under a State Act. Assam Government has decided to form an expert committee to investigate whether the State Government has the authority to prohibit polygamy in the region. Assam Government wants to ban polygamy in the state”, CM Sarma said.

He further said that the committee will engage broadly in discussions with all stakeholders including legal experts and will scrutinize the provisions of the Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) Act, 1937.

“The committee will scrutinize the provisions of The Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) Act, 1937, along with Article 25 of the Constitution of India, in relation to the directive principle of state policy for a uniform civil code. The committee will engage in extensive discussions with all stakeholders, including legal experts, to arrive at a well-informed decision”, he said.

Earlier on Saturday, CM Sarma, while addressing a rally in poll-bound Karnataka, said that implementing a Uniform Civil Code is important in the state for ending the system of men making “four marriages” and women being made “child producing machines”.

The Assam CM was holding a roadshow in Shanivarasanthe Madikeri in the Kodagu district of Karnataka, as part of the campaign for the BJP.

Addressing the people, the Assam CM said, “We also have to make Uniform Civil Code. Muslim women and daughters are made to marry over four times. Is it a system? Such a rule should not exist in the world. We have to bring Uniform Civil Code and end this system”.

“Muslim daughters should be made doctors, and engineers, not child-producing machines. BJP has promised to work on Uniform Civil Code if voted to power. I would like to thank the BJP for that,” he added.

Notably, BJP in its manifesto, has promised the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in the state of Karnataka, on the basis of the recommendations of a high-level committee which is to be constituted for the purpose, if voted to power.

This announcement is similar to the one, BJP made in the run-up to the Gujarat and Uttarakhand Assembly polls last year. (ANI)

Dr Yadu Singh

‘Australians of All Faiths Must Unite Against Vandalism of Holy Places’

Dr Yadu Singh, of the Federation of Indian Associations of NSW Sydney, says vandalism of Hindu temples is an attack on the spirit of multilateralism and diversity in Australia

I am saddened and infuriated with the reports of vandalism of the local BAPS temple and anti-India graffiti on its walls at Rosehill suburb of Sydney, Australia. This is not the first time such incidents have taken place in Australia. Earlier, temples in Melbourne, including BAPS temple, and Brisbane were subjected to similar vandalism and hateful graffiti. I have visited the BAPS temple many times and feel anguished at the desecration.

I believe that these hate crimes must be condemned by every peace-loving member of society, irrespective of one’s faith. The perpetrators of such vandalism not only damages physical structures but also demean the spirit of unity and respect among diverse communities in Australia.

Australia is a country that prides itself on multiculturalism, diversity and tolerance. Such activities are a direct attack on this spirit. On the legal front, the culprits must be caught and punished. And on the social front, such hate crimes must be universally condemned. Attacks on places of worship of any faith, have no place in this nation. These un-Australian activities have no place in Australia, which is a successful multicultural and multi-faith nation

These activities seem to be the handiwork of hatemongers who seek to create an irreparable division between various faith segments of the Indian Australian community. Several Indian community organisations in a joint statement expressed that the attacks were an attempt to provoke disharmony and undermine the social fabric of Australia. The statement also highlighted the fact that these temples were not just places of worship but also cultural and social centres which bring together people from diverse backgrounds.

BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Sydney

The Indian community in Australia has called for greater awareness and education among the wider public to prevent such incidents in the future. They have also appealed to the Australian government to take a tough stance against those who promote sectarianism and intolerance.

ALSO READ: ‘Religious Leaders Must Foster Harmony, Not Discord’

The incident has once again highlighted the need for greater efforts towards promoting unity and harmony among diverse communities. Australia has a significant population of migrants from different parts of the world. The challenge, therefore, is to create an inclusive society that celebrates diversity and promotes mutual respect and understanding.

The vandalisation of temples in Sydney by pro-Khalistan elements has caused deep hurt and outrage among the Indian community in Australia. There is a widespread belief that such acts go against the very grain of Sikhism, which propagates equal respect to all faiths. These vandals thus bring a bad name to Sikhism itself.

The incident is a stark reminder of the need for greater efforts towards building an inclusive and tolerant society. It is time for everyone to come together and work towards creating a better world where diversity is celebrated, and differences are respected. All segments of our community, especially Sikhs, Hindus, Christians and Muslims must stand united to counter the growing menace of hate brewing within our community. I urge, as I always have, that we should act as Australians and shouldn’t bring political issues from India to Australian shores.

Raghav, Parineeti Set To Get Engaged

Actor Parineeti Chopra and AAP leader Raghav Chadha are all set to get engaged, finally putting an end to speculations about their relationship.

Sources said the duo will exchange the rings on May 13 in Delhi.
Around 150 close friends and family members have been invited to the ceremony, the sources added.

Several members from the political and film fraternity are expected to attend the function.

Neither Parineeti nor Raghav officially confirmed their relationship but an AAP leader had in March congratulated them over their “union”.

Sachin Pilot

Gehlot’s Leader Is Vasundhara Raje: Sachin Pilot

Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Tuesday took a sharp jibe at Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, saying that his speech in Dholpur showed his leader “is not Sonia Gandhi but Vasundhara Raje Scindia”.

Gehlot had claimed that Vasundhara Raje was among BJP leaders who helped him save his government during the revolt by Pilot and some Congress MLAs in 2020 seeking change in leadership in the state.
Addressing a press conference, Pilot also said that he has now understood why Gehlot “has not acted” on his allegations of corruption during the BJP government in the state.

“After listening to Ashok Gehlot’s speech in Dholpur, it seems like his leader is not Sonia Gandhi but Vasundhara Raje Scindia… For the first time, I am seeing someone criticize MPs and MLAs of their own party. Praising leaders from BJP and dishonouring Congress leaders is beyond my understanding, this is absolutely wrong,” Pilot said.

“I have now understood why the CM (Ashok Gehlot) has not acted against corruption,” he added.

Pilot’s attack amounts to an escalation of his conflict with Gehlot in the crucial state which will go to the polls by the end of this year.

The attack on Gehlot came a day before polling in Karnataka polls in which Congress is fighting a crucial battle.

Pilot,a former Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister, announced that he will hold a five-day-long ‘Jan Sangarsh Yatra’ from Ajmer to Jaipur starting May 11.

“This yatra is against corruption. Any further decision will be taken after this yatra,” he said.

Pilot had held a day-long fast last month, even as the party leadership had cautioned him against it, over his demand for action by the Gehlot government for alleged corruption during the BJP rule in the state.

BJP leader Vasundhara Raje had countered Ashok Gehlot’s claims, saying Rajasthan Chief Minister is lying out of fear of losing the 2023 Assembly elections and his false allegations show he is rattled by the rebellion in state Congress unit.

Gehlot had credited Vasundhara Raje and two other Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders for having helped him save his government during the 2020 crisis when some Congress MLAs revolted.

“Gehlot’s statement against me is a conspiracy. Nobody can insult me as much as Gehlot has done. He is lying out of fear of losing the 2023 Assembly elections and has made such false allegations as he is rattled by the rebellion in his own party,” Raje had said.

Addressing a programme in Dholpur on Sunday, Gehlot alleged that there was a conspiracy against his government.

“Former Chief Minister of Rajasthan Vasundhara Raje Scindia, Shobha Rani and Kailash Meghwal knew their party people were toppling the government. Vasundhara Raje Scindia and Kailash Meghwal had said that it has never been our tradition to topple the elected government on the basis of money. They did not support those who toppled the government due to which our government survived,” Gehlot had said.

Both Pilot and Gehlot have taken potshots at each other in the past forcing the party leadership to intervene. (ANI)

Wrestlers Protest

Women Wrestlers: Grappling For Justice

Respecting and ensuring the well-being of its athletes, from grassroots level to Olympic podiums, is an important aspect of encouraging sports and the sporting spirit for a nation. It is crucial to create an environment that promotes fair competition, equal opportunity and a nurturing environment for the physical and mental health of the sports fraternity. There have been occasions, when athletes, including sportswomen, have been vocal about their rights and have utilized public platforms to raise awareness and demand change when they encounter mistreatment or unfair conditions. Such voicing of concern and activism play a significant role in highlighting grave issues and pushing for reforms within sports organizations and federations.

Unfortunately, the current protests by women wrestlers to raise serious irregularities and injustices that plague the Wrestling Federation of India – allegations of sexual harassment (in many cases assault), unfair selection procedure, and prejudices – have been met with a patriarchal stonewall. These are no ordinary sportspersons; some of them have graced Commonwealth and Olympic podiums, others have World Championship titles to boot; they brought glory and recognition to the National Tricolor on global forums. Today, they are forced to spend nights on pavements at Jantar Mantar under an open sky.

At the center of the controversy is Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a Member of Parliament from the ruling BJP who heads the WFI. The defendant has denied all the charges against him and called the protests a conspiracy to remove him from the WFI helm. However, the nature of allegations demand a high-level investigation and scrutiny which has been missing. Such allegations can have significant consequences for the individuals involved, as well as for the reputation and integrity of the sports organizations. When allegations arise, it is important for appropriate investigations to take place to determine the facts and ensure justice is served. This can involve legal processes, disciplinary actions, and the implementation of preventive measures to create a safe and supportive environment for athletes.

The treatment of Olympians varies across different countries and contexts. Olympians are celebrated and honored for their dedication, talent, and achievements in their respective sports. They are often seen as ambassadors for their countries and receive support from their national Olympic committees, sponsors, and fans.

However in India, the mere allegations have disrupted and single-handedly unfolded the bleak nature of the Government of India, which has yet not taken any kind of action against the defendant. The athletes were very vocal about the nature of harassment they had to experience. They spoke about “atrocities and the tyrant-like behavior” of Brij Bhushan that often left female athletes depressed and distressed, angry and frustrated.

The issues surrounding sports management and performance in India are complex and multifaceted. While it is true that there have been instances of corruption and the presence of patriarchal attitudes within sports administration, it would be an oversimplification to attribute the lack of gold medals in the Olympics solely to these factors.

ALSO READ: Women Wrestlers – Betrayed By Their Own

Several factors contribute to a country’s success in international sporting events like the Olympics. These include the overall infrastructure and facilities for sports, grassroots development programs, training and coaching standards, funding and support for athletes, and the cultural and societal attitudes towards sports. It’s essential to address all these factors to enhance India’s performance in the Olympics.

Corruption within sports management can indeed hinder progress and impede the fair selection and development of talented athletes. When decision-making processes are influenced by personal gain or bias, it can undermine the integrity of sports and deprive deserving individuals of opportunities.

Patriarchal attitudes can also limit the participation and development of women athletes. Gender inequality in sports is a global issue, and India is no exception. Encouraging equal opportunities for women in sports, providing support, and breaking down societal barriers are crucial steps toward promoting gender parity and improving performance.

To address these challenges, it is important to implement systemic reforms in sports management, enhance transparency, and establish stringent measures against corruption. Promoting inclusivity, gender equality, and providing equal opportunities for athletes from all backgrounds can help harness the talent and potential of Indian sports.

Moreover, investing in grassroots development programs, modernizing infrastructure, and focusing on athlete-centric training methods are vital for nurturing talent from a young age. Collaboration between government bodies, sports federations, private sector entities, and the civil society can create a conducive environment for sports development and success.

India has produced some accomplished women wrestlers who have achieved success at both national and international levels. Wrestlers like Geeta Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Vinesh Phogat have brought pride to the nation by winning medals in various international competitions, including the Olympics and it is important for the government of India to listen to their voice and support them at every step. This recent event has however shown the brutal and delay in the action taken by the government of India regarding this crucial issue. A country should treat Olympians with respect, recognition, and support. Olympians dedicate years of their lives to rigorous training and represent their country on world stage.

It’s important to acknowledge that progress takes time, and building a robust sports ecosystem requires sustained efforts and investment. By addressing the issues within sports management, promoting transparency, inclusivity, and talent development, India can strive towards better performances in future Olympic Games.

Air Raids On Gaza

12 Dead In Israel’s Air Raids On Gaza

At least 12 people were killed in the latest air raids on Gaza Strip by Israel’s military on Tuesday, Al Jazeera reported, adding that 20 others sustained injuries in an operation conducted early morning.

At around 2 am (local time) on Tuesday (23:00 GMT on Monday), explosions targeting residential flats were reported throughout Gaza.
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) movement said that three of its leaders were killed, including their wives and several children, according to Al Jazeera.

Three senior members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement were killed by the Israeli army in an early Tuesday morning bombing in which explosions ripped through Gaza under ‘Operation Shield and Arrow’, The Times of Israel reported.

Prior to the operation, Israeli residents of areas within 40 kilometres (25 miles) of Gaza were instructed to enter or stay near bomb shelters amid fears of retaliatory attacks, as raids continued to thunder across the Strip.

According to The Times of Israel, previous strikes on Islamic Jihad leaders have sparked barrages of rockets on Israeli civilians and intense battles with Israeli troops, some lasting several days.

Dozens of strikes were reported across the Strip in the ensuing hours, sending fireballs skyward as the army targeted terror training sites. The army called the campaign ‘Operation Shield and Arrow’.

The bombings came after Adnan, a Palestinian Islamic Jihad activist, passed away last week after going on a hunger strike for almost three months. According to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society, Adnan had abstained from eating for 87 days as a form of protest against his imprisonment without cause. (ANI)
