Cong Cannot Tolerate Good Things: Pralhad Joshi

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi on Sunday slammed the Opposition parties’ boycott of the new Parliament building inauguration and said that Congress cannot tolerate good things happening in the country.

While talking to ANI, Pralhad Joshi said, “Congress cannot tolerate good things happening in the country. They are lying about ‘Sengol’.”
“Parliament is a temple of democracy. People will give them a befitting reply for the way they (RJD) are using expletives for the new Parliament.

In his first address at the new parliament building after the inauguration, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday underlined that the new Parliament House will invoke the development of the world from the development of India.

PM Modi said that the world is looking towards India’s determination, its citizens’ vigour and the life of human power in India with respect and hope.

“When India moves forward, the world moves forward. New models can be established only by treading new paths,” the Prime Minister remarked as he highlighted that the new India is realizing new goals and paving new ways.

Stating that after years of slavery, India resumed its journey and reached the Amrit Kaal, PM Modi said, “Amrit Kaal is a period of forging new dimensions of development while preserving our heritage. This is Amrit Kaal of giving a new direction to the nation. This is Amrit Kaal of fulfilling innumerable aspirations”, he said.

PM Modi installed the sacred ‘Sengol’ in the new Lok Sabha chamber, right next to the Speaker’s chair, after performing puja. PM Modi also performed ‘sashtang pranam’ as a mark of respect before the ‘Sengol’ during the ceremony.

“It is our good fortune that we have been able to restore the pride of the holy ‘Sengol’. Whenever proceedings start in this House the ‘Sengol’ will inspire us,” said PM Modi.

PM Modi was handed over the historic ‘Sengol’ by Adheenams before it was installed in the new building. The Sengol marked the transfer of power from the British to the Indians in 1947.

After dedicating the new Parliament building to the country earlier this morning after a ceremony that saw a multi-faith prayer, Prime Minister Narendra Modi this afternoon walked into the new building amid chants of “Modi” “Modi” and a standing ovation for the second phase of the inauguration ceremony.

PM Modi said that the new Parliament building was not just a building but reflected the aspirations and dreams of 1.4 billion people and will send a powerful message to the world about India’s unwavering determination.

The new Parliament building is designed to enable 888 members to sit in the Lok Sabha. In the present building of the Parliament, there is a provision for the sitting of 543 Members in the Lok Sabha and 250 in the Rajya Sabha.

Keeping in view the future requirements, arrangements have been made for a meeting of 888 members in the Lok Sabha and 384 members in the Rajya Sabha in the newly constructed building of the Parliament. The joint session of both Houses will be held in the Lok Sabha Chamber. (ANI)

Around 30 Terrorists Killed By Security Forces: Biren

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Sunday said that around 30 “terrorists” have been killed so far by security forces during their operations to check violent incidents and attacks on civilians and restoring ‘peace’ in the state.

Earlier in the day, Army Chief General Manoj Pande met Singh and discussed the current security situation in Manipur and the steps taken by the Army to restore peace.
“In retaliatory and defensive operations against these terrorist groups who are using sophisticated arms against the civilian population, around 30 of these terrorists have been killed in different areas. A few have also been arrested by the security forces,” the CM said while addressing the media at the Darbar Hall of the Chief Minister’s Secretariat.

He further said the spurt in violent attacks on civilian houses in the peripheral areas of the Valley in the past one or two days which seemed “well-planned and simultaneous” to show their capacity, is strongly condemnable, especially when Minister of State Nityanand Rai is in the State and group peace missions are being formed as part of efforts to bring back peace in the state.

“According to our information, firing has been reported from Sugnu in Kakching, Kangvi in Churachandpur, Kangchup in Imphal West, Sagolmang in Imphal East, Nungoipokpi in Bishenpur, Khurkhul in Imphal West and YKPI in Kangpokpi,” said an official earlier in the day.

The house of BJP MLA Khwairakpam Raghumani Singh at Uripok in Imphal West was allegedly vandalised and his two vehicles were set on fire.

Asserting that those trying to break the State and disrupt peaceful coexistence in the state are enemies of all the 34 communities residing together, Singh said that the government will continue to face every such challenge.

“The gunfight is between the armed terrorists and the security forces and not between the communities. So I urge common people to maintain peace and stay united,” CM said.

He also said the government will not allow the disintegration of Manipur, protect the state’s integrity and uproot these armed terrorists from the state.

Further, he also reassured that the government will face every challenge against the territorial integrity of the state and attacks on the life and property of the people.

Appealing to the people to support and pray for the commandos, and security forces and to encourage them, the Chief Minister also said, “The State force is directly under the State Home department and there is no restriction on them from anyone.”

Ethnic clashes which have claimed around 75 lives first broke out in Manipur after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts on May 3 to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

The violence was preceded by tension over the eviction of Kuki villagers from reserve forest land, which had led to a series of smaller agitations. (ANI)

Modi Offered Sashtang Pranam At New Parliament Building

With the inauguration of the new Parliament building in the national capital on Sunday, the country witnessed Prime Minister Narendra Modi performing ‘sashtang pranam’ (prostration) in front of the ‘Sengol’ as a mark of respect and commitment towards nation reminding a similar gesture of PM Modi during ‘bhoomi pooja’ of Ram Lalla in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya.

Amid the chanting of Vedic mantras and sounds of conch shells, PM Modi performed ‘sashtang pranam’ (prostration) in front of the ‘Sengol’ as a mark of respect during the inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament.
Referring to the establishment of sacred Sengol, the Prime Minister said that in the great Chola empire, Sengol was seen as a symbol of ‘service to the nation’.

Modi installed the sacred ‘Sengol’ in the Lok Sabha chamber, right next to the Speaker’s chair in the new Parliament building, after performing puja.

“Delighted to see Sengol being recognized at the inauguration of the new building of the Indian Parliament. Its august presence illustrates how heritage and progress merge beautifully, giving us added inspiration to fulfil people’s aspirations,” PM Modi tweeted after installing the Sengol in Parliament.

PM Modi was handed over the historic ‘Sengol’ by Adheenams before it was installed in the new Parliament building.

PM Modi took a decision to adopt Sengol as a national symbol of the Amrit Kaal.

This is the same Sengol that was accepted by the first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru at his residence on the night of August 14, in the presence of several leaders.

In 2020, Modi had bowed down in front of the Ram Lalla idol in the Ram Temple premises in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya when he arrived at Ram Janmabhoomi to perform ‘bhoomi poojan’ of ‘Bhagwan Shri Ramlalla Virajman’.

Prior to this, PM Modi in 2019, had bowed and respectfully touched the Constitution of India with his forehead, as he walked towards the podium after being elected as the leader of the NDA and BJP parliamentary party.

In 2014 too, as he stepped into the Parliament for the first time after storming the BJP into power, PM Modi bent down with his forehead touching the stairs, to register his high respect for the “temple of democracy.” (ANI)

“India’s strength lies in its diversity. There is a lot to see in our country. Keeping this in view, the Ministry of Education has taken an excellent initiative named ‘Yuvasangam’. The objective of this initiative is to increase People to People Connect as well as to give an opportunity to the youth of the country to mingle with each other. Higher educational institutions in various states have been linked to it,” said PM Modi during the 101st episode of MannKiBaat.
PM Modi said that in the first round of Yuva Sangam, about 1,200 youths toured 22 states of the country. Everyone who has been a part of it is returning with such memories, which will remain etched in their hearts for the rest of their lives.

He said, “We have seen that CEOs, Business leaders of many big companies have spent time in India as Back-Packers. When I meet leaders of other countries, many a time they also tell me that they had gone to visit India in their youth.”

He added, “There is so much to know and see in India that your curiosity will only increase every time. I hope that after coming to know of these exciting experiences, you too will definitely be inspired to travel to different parts of the country.”

Prime Minister Modi also spoke to two youngsters, each from Arunachal Pradesh and Bihar. Under the ‘Yuva Sangam’ people-to-people initiative, the youngsters visited Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu respectively.

While talking to one delegate of Arunachal Pradesh, PM Modi said, “You should write a blog on your experiences in the Yuva Sangam, how you enrolled in it, how your experience in Rajasthan has been, so that the youth of the country know the significance and greatness of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat, what this scheme is all about… how youths can take advantage of it, you should write a blog full of your experiences… then it will be useful for many people to read.”

He also encouraged Vishakha, the delegate from Bihar to share her experience of Yuva Sangam and Ek Bharat-Shreshth Bharat on social media regarding the welcome and hospitality that she received in Tamil Nadu.

“So Vishakha, do write a blog and share this experience on social media, firstly, of this Yuva Sangam, then of ‘Ek Bharat-Shreshth Bharat’ and then the warmth you felt in Tamil Nadu, and the welcome and hospitality that you received. You were showered with the love of Tamil people, tell all these things to the country,” the PM said while interacting with Bihar delegate, Vishakha.

PM Modi’s monthly radio programme recently completed its 100th episode which was aired on April 26 live across the country.

The 100th edition of the ‘Mann ki Baat’ programme made its global broadcast on April 30. The programme was also broadcasted live at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

The programme, which started on October 3, 2014, became a key pillar of the government’s citizen-outreach programme addressing multiple social groups such as women, youth, and farmers and has spurred community action.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister dedicated the new Parliament building to the nation on Sunday morning. Ahead of the inauguration, the PM also felicitated the construction workers with traditional shawls and handed over mementoes. ‘Sarv-dharma’ prayers were held at the new Parliament building, with priests from different religions reciting the traditional verses.

After performing puja, PM Modi installed the sacred ‘Sengol’ in the new Lok Sabha chamber, right next to the Speaker’s chair. (ANI)

Desecration of Dancing Girl

The Desecration of an Ancient Dancing Girl

The desecration Mohenjo Daro dancing girl

My introduction to the Indus Valley civilisation happened in history class in school, of course, but also at home. My father was a history buff and among the many replicas of historical artifacts displayed in our small living room’s glass-fronted cabinet, was a tiny one of the famous Mohenjo-Daro Dancing Girl.

Highly regarded as a work of art, the Dancing Girl is a bronze statuette created by “lost wax casting” over 4,500 years ago, circa 2300–1750 BCE, and is a rare and unique masterpiece. It was found in the ancient Mohenjo-Daro site in 1926. The statue is a cultural artifact reflecting the aesthetics of a female body as conceptualized during that pre-historical period. The figurine, which is nude, shows vigour, variety, and ingenuity. The right arm of the dancing girl rests on the hip and the left arm is heavily bangled.

The significance of the Dancing Girl statue lies in its artistic value and its reflection of the aesthetics of the female body during that period. It also signifies that there was knowledge of blended metal casting in that era and that dancing may have been a part of the cultural activity then. The Dancing Girl statuette, 10.5 centimetres in height, is an iconic representation of art and culture during prehistoric times in the Indus Valley civilisation.

Well, now, with some contribution from the ruling regime in India, that icon has been desecrated. On May 25, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the International Museum Expo 2023 by unveiling a life-size mascot for the event. The mascot is supposedly a “contemporised” version of the Dancing Girl.

The original statuette was dark in colour and was a nude depiction of the girl. In the so-called contemporised version, the five-foot replica shows the statuette with a pink skin tone and clad in bright pink and yellow clothing. This has led to a controversy in social media and public discourse.

In recent years, particularly after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in India, fiddling with history has become commonplace. A pink, clothed replica of the iconic Dancing Girl is another instance of the attempts to distort India’s history–and in this case, pre-history. The controversy over changing history textbooks by tweaking or blanking out events and facts that pertain to eras and periods in India’s History that don’t sit well with the ruling regime’s perceptions and beliefs about “Hinduism” are rife. What this achieves besides distortion of history is difficult to comprehend.

The outrage over the desecration of one of Indian history’s most iconic artifacts has been limited. To be sure, the mainstream media in India, generally lemming-like in their behaviour, has reported about the controversy but has gone no further. There has been no campaign against what is yet another attempt to banalise and vulgarise historical facts–in this case, an important artifact. The net outcome: India’s rising breed of self-proclaimed moralists have scored another shameful victory.

Making sense of the Manipur violence

When it comes to the north-eastern part of India, which comprises eight states—Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura (commonly known as the “Seven Sisters”), and the “brother”, Sikkim, India’s media coverage is scant and often superficial. Many of these states are socially and demographically complex with different tribes and ethnic diversities that are not adequately understood. In recent weeks violence has erupted in one of India’s north-eastern states, Manipur, and it has led to nearly 60 deaths, thousands left wounded, and 25,000 displacements.

The violence has been between ethnic groups and has led to buildings being set ablaze and charred vehicles strewn across roads. The violence has also led to thousands of people fleeing their homes. The situation in Manipur is complex and has been fueled by a number of factors, including ethnic tensions, political instability, and economic inequality. The violence has also led to calls for a separate state in India.

The ethnic divisions in the Manipur violence are not simple and have been fueled by a number of factors. The valley area in Manipur is largely inhabited by Meiteis, while the hill areas are dominated by tribals – mainly Kukis. Small fractions of people from both communities live in areas dominated by the other, and these were the people caught in the crossfire first when the violence began. The Meiteis are the predominant ethnic group in the state and the majority of them are Hindus, while the Kukis, a hill tribe, are predominantly Christian.

The ongoing unrest began when Kuki tribes organised a protest march that led to a clash with the Meitei community. The Meiteis form nearly 50% of the 4-million population of the state. The genesis of the violence was the Kuki (the community is classified as a Scheduled Tribe) protest against Meiteis also being classified as a Scheduled Tribe. The Scheduled Tribe classification is an affirmative action policy that is aimed at ensuring that minority tribes in India get reservations with regard to education and government jobs.

The Kukis believe that the Meitei demand for being classified as a Scheduled Tribe is not fair because as the dominant ethnic group they already enjoy advantages that minority groups don’t. The fissures between Manipur’s ethnic groups have a long history and violence between different groups has flared several times over the past decades.

India’s Opposition boycotts inauguration of new Parliament House

Several opposition parties in India have decided to boycott the inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament building by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 28. The decision came after several Opposition parties demanded that President Draupadi Murmu should inaugurate the new building in Delhi instead of Modi because Parliament is a non-partisan institution. The opposition parties have cited various reasons for their decision to boycott the event, including the sidelining of the President and the violation of the letter and spirit of the Constitution.

Union Minister Anurag Thakur has criticised the Opposition for its decision to boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament building, saying it was an insult. Ex-bureaucrats and veterans have also condemned the Opposition for boycotting recent ‘non-partisan’ events of Parliament.

Modi, as most Indians are aware, has a penchant for inaugurating things–it could be a new train, an educational institution, an exhibition, metro lines, expressways, or even less. There is a comical aspect too to the pomp and drama that usually accompanies these inaugurations… but, hush now,  he also has a low threshold of tolerance for criticism.

Modi’s Australian extravaganza

Prime Minister Modi likes acronyms and alliterations. Last week, when he received what the media called “a rock star” welcome by the Indian diaspora in Australia–an audience of 20,000 thronged a venue where the public meeting was organised, Modi said: “There are three Cs that defined our relationship with Australia: the commonwealth, cricket, and curry. But now it is three Ds: democracy, diaspora, dosti (which in Hindi means friendship),” he began. “Now there are also three Es that define the relationship: energy, economy, and education.”

The crowd, mainly comprising Indian diaspora, lapped it up. Indians abroad are always in awe of Modi. In the US, UK, and in Europe, Indians living abroad are drawn by the thousands to Modi’s events when they happen and their cheers and applause are always overwhelming.

Even the Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, appeared to be in awe of Modi. He was quoted as saying: “The last time I saw someone on this stage was Bruce Springsteen and he did not get the welcome that prime minister Modi has got. Prime minister Modi is the boss.”

No one did speak about the suppression in Kashmir, the insecurity of India’s Minority communities, the violence in the northeastern part of India, the ill-conceived introduction of 2000-rupee notes followed by their recent withdrawal, or the state of the mainstream media that cower like sheep when a wolf approaches their pen. Amen.

Meanwhile, in Russia’s Ukraine war…

Last week, Russia’s attack on Ukraine entered its 15th month and it shows no signs of relenting. The war in Ukraine has seen major developments since Russia’s invasion on Feb. 24, 2022. Ukrainian troops have made lightning gains in the east of the country, inflicting one of Russia’s worst military setbacks. But cities including Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv and Odesa have been hit by Russian missiles.

Here are more recent updates: Power at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant was lost for several hours. Heavy fighting continued around Bakhmut in the east of the country. Front lines in the south around Kherson were largely stable. Ukraine has also accused Russia of coercion in ‘sham’ referendums aimed at annexing four occupied regions. Russia and Ukraine have held their first direct negotiations since March over grain exports, but without any immediate signs of a breakthrough, and missile strikes across Ukraine continue to be reported. The war continues.

Wrestlers' March

Wrestlers’ March: PKMC Members Stopped At Ambala Border

In view of protesting wrestlers’ call for women Maha Panchayat in front of the new Parliament building in the national capital, the members of the Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee were stopped at Ambala border by police on Sunday.

The Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee members had come out from Amritsar on Saturday to participate in women wrestlers’ Maha Panchayat in front of the new Parliament.

Delhi Police have increased the security in the national capital, including on its borders ahead of a march by wrestlers towards the newly-built Parliament building.

Khap Panchayats called for a Mahila maha panchayat in support of wrestlers who have been protesting against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP accusing him of sexual harassment. Seven women wrestlers have filed a police complaint against him.

Delhi Police barricaded all the borders of the national capital in order to prevent any protest or gathering.

“Delhi Police are prepared for such situations. We have enough force to deploy. Last time the border was closed for months because of the protesters (farmers’ protests). We have prepared our forces so that such situations do not arise again. We will convince the protesters to return,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Delhi Amrutha Gugulot told ANI.

Barricades have come up near ITO road, the Tikri border, Badarpur border, Ghazipur border and the Singhu border area as Khap Panchayat leaders and farmers have said they will join the march to the new Parliament building by the protesting wrestlers.

Delhi Police Special CP Deepender Pathak told ANI that adequate police deployment would be made for maintaining the law and order situation during today’s event.

“Our focus is to maintain law and order situation and carry out the programme (inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament building). We will ensure enough police deployment for tomorrow’s event,” he said.

Notably, Delhi Police has received inputs that on the day of the inauguration, some miscreants may put up “anti-national and anti-PM” slogans on the walls of the campus.

Regarding this, Delhi Police deployed heavy security around the new Parliament building throughout the 24 hours.

According to Delhi Police’s top sources, no permission has been given for this panchayat. The protestors will not be allowed to hold Khap Panchayat.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new Parliament building, which is part of the Central Vista redevelopment project. (ANI)
