Gauhati HC Stays WFI Elections

Gauhati High Court on Sunday stayed the Wrestling Federation of India elections, which were scheduled to be held on July 11.

The ruling came on a plea filed by the Assam Wrestling Federation, seeking a stay on the WFI elections.
The elections, which were initially scheduled to be held on July 6, were pushed back to July 11 earlier. The polling was to be conducted from 11 am to 1.20 pm.

The counting of votes was to start from 1.30 pm and the results were to be declared on the same day — July 11.

The polls were scheduled amid a protest by several prominent wrestlers, including Olympians Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat, seeking the arrest and removal of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, over allegations of sexual harassment.

The protest was launched near the iconic Jantar Mantar in the national capital at the start of this year.

Earlier, on June 13, the newly-appointed returning officer for WFI elections, Mahesh Mittal Kumar, released a statement announcing July 6 as the date for holding the polls to the country’s top wrestling body.

The process of filing nominations was to start from June 19.

“Whereas, the undersigned has been appointed as the Returning Officer by the Indian Olympic Association vide its letter No. IOA/I-28/2023/1350 dated 12th June 2023 for the purpose of conducting the election of the Executive Committee of the Wrestling Federation of India(WFI), which is an affiliate member of the Indian Olympic Association(IOA),” the statement by the office of the returning officer read.

The Indian Olympics Association (IOA) organised a three-member ad hoc committee in April as mandated by the Sports Ministry, and two members were named to oversee WFI’s day-to-day activities and pick wrestlers for international events in the interim.

Earlier, after a meeting with Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, star Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia said he was assured that the probe by Delhi Police into the allegations against the WFI chief would be completed by June 15.

Delhi Police subsequently filed a chargesheet against the WFI chief, while recommending cancellation of the complaint filed by a minor wrestler, alleging sexual harassment. They sought a withdrawal of the case after the minor and her father retracted their earlier statements. (ANI)

TN: Devotees Throng To Witness Chariot Procession At Chidambaram Natarajar Temple

Five-chariot procession carrying the deities of Moolavar and Urchavargal was taken out today at Chidambaram of Cuddalore district.

Thousands of devotees from Cuddalore and neighbouring districts witnessed the chariot procession of Sri Sabanayagar temple, popularly known as Sri Natarajar temple in Chidambaram, during the Aani Thirumanjanam festival which is considered as one of the major festivals in Tamil Nadu.
On June 17 in ‘Sri Natarajar Temple’ Aani Thirumanjanam begins with Kodiyetram. Today marks the 9th day of the festival chariots carrying the processional-cum-presiding deity Lord Natarajamoorthy, goodness Sri Sivagama Sundhari. Similarly, Urchavargal Lord Sri Subramaniyar, Lord Sri Vinayagar, and Lord Sri Chandikeshwarar each were on separate chariots. Five chariots each carry a deity.

The devotees pulled the chariots covering the four streets surrounding Chidambaram Temple.

Once the procession ends Lord Natarajar and goddess Sivagamasundari were brought to the 1,000-pillar mandapam in the temple where special poojas were done as a part of customs. (ANI)

Actor Ileana D’Cruz is currently enjoying a new phase of her life, pregnancy.

She has entered her third trimester. On Sunday morning, the ‘Main Tera Hero’ actor shared a selfie on her Instagram stories and wrote, “K they weren’t kidding about that third trimester fatigue.”

In the picture, Ileana could be seen smiling and flaunting her pregnancy glow.

Recently, she conducted an ‘Ask me Anything’ session on her Instagram account in which she talked about her pregnancy journey.

She wrote, “Honestly, there’s so much to say regarding this journey but if I had to sum it up in one word -Humbling.

She concluded, “May get more into detail if it’s something you guys want to know more about.”

She also replied to a question where a fan asked, “What was your feeling when you heard the heartbeat of your baby for the first time?”

Calling it ‘One of the most beautiful moments’, she wrote, “One of the most beautiful moments I have ever experienced. I can’t even describe how overwhelmed I was. There were tears and happiness and so much relief and joy. A massive surge of love for a tiny seed that was going to be a full grown baby soon.”

Ileana is quite an active social media user and keeps sharing glimpses from her pregnancy diaries with her fans.

From the very beginning, Ileana has been extremely tight-lipped about her personal life. Earlier several reports suggested that Ileana is dating Katrina Kaif’s brother Sebastian Laurent Michel.

The duo’s relationship rumours surfaced after the two were spotted vacationing with Vicky Kaushal and Katrina Kaif in the Maldives.The couple has not yet made their relationship official.

Ileana was earlier in a relationship with photographer Andrew Kneebone for quite a few years.

Kareena Kapoor and Karisma Kapoor are the daughters of veteran stars Randhir Kapoor and Babita, they are also the granddaughters of legendary actor and filmmaker Raj Kapoor and the great-granddaughter of actor Prithviraj Kapoor.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Kareena will share the screen with Tabu and Kriti Sanon and Diljit Dosanjh in the film ‘The Crew’. The shoot of the film commenced last week.

Helmed by Rajesh Krishnan, the film is a story of three women. It is touted as a laugh-riot, set against the backdrop of the struggling airline industry. However, their destinies lead to some unwarranted situations and they get caught in a web of lies.

She also has Sujoy Ghosh’s next thriller film which is based on the book The Devotion Of Suspect X. It also stars Vijay Varma and Jaideep Ahlawat.

Karisma, on the other hand, will be next seen in an upcoming series ‘Brown’.

Helmed by Abhinay Deo of ‘Delhi Belly’ fame, ‘Brown’ is based on Rita Brown, a suicidal alcoholic, and Arjun Sinha, a widower with survivor’s guilt. The protagonists need to deal with an unstoppable serial killer on the loose.

Shankar Felicitated With Honorary Doctorate By Top UK Univ

Indian singer Shankar Mahadevan received an honorary doctorate from Birmingham City University (BCU) for his outstanding contribution to music and the arts on June 23 in a ceremony held at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

Talking exclusively to ANI, Mahadevan shared his experience and said, “This is truly special, I feel privileged, I feel honoured and this is just the result of body of work that I have done. I would like to thank Birmingham City University and all the people who decided to confer this legendary, honourable doctorate on me. All I can say is that this is an occasion which tells that I need to work even harder, come up with even more beautiful songs and spread the joy of music which is Indian classical music all around the world.”
Andy Street, the mayor of West Midlands County in the UK, made the announcement during a trade mission event in Mumbai in November last year.

The occasion was also attended by the Table Maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain and the legendary guitarist, John McLaughlin.

He added, “When an honorary doctorate like this is conferred upon an artist that you look up to then you’ve a goal to achieve. The youngster feel that their dreams are coming true in front of their eyes. They also start working hard and they would also like to achieve and would like to reach possibly where I reached today. I used to look up at maestros like John McLaughlin and Ustaad Zakir Hussain like they have come to confer this upon me. So it’s nice to set a kind example for the next generation.”

After a formal ceremony the students of Birmingham City University performed the songs composed by the singer like ‘Mitwa’ from ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’.

Later the choir was joined by the legendary Shakti trio- Ustad Zakir Hussain, Shanar Mahadevan, and John McLaughlin on stage who performed Bollywood numbers and Mahadevan also enchanted the audience with his timeless claasic ‘Breathless’.

Mahadevan is known for his hit tracks like ‘Maa Tujhe Salaam’, ‘Aaj Kal Zindagi’, ‘Uff Teri Ada’, ‘Tere Naina’, ‘Kay Sera Sera’, and ‘Koi Kahe Kehta Rahe’ among others. (ANI)

Kamal Haasan Joins Cast Of ‘Project K’

Legendary actor Kamal Haasan is the new addition to the action thriller film ‘Project K’ which also features Prabhas, Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan.

Taking to Instagram, Prabhas, on Sunday shared an announcement video of the ‘Vikram’ actor joining the cast of ‘Project K’.
He captioned the video, “A moment that will be etched in my heart forever. Honored beyond words to collaborate with the legendary @ikamalhaasan sir in #ProjectK. The opportunity to learn and grow alongside such a titan of cinema is a dream come true moment.”

Helmed by Nag Ashwin, the film is all set to hit the theatres on January 12, 2024.

Confirming the news, Haasan said in an official statement, “50 years back when I was a dance assistant and an assistant director the name Ashwini Dutt loomed large in the production sector. Both of us are coming together after 50 years. A brilliant director from our next generation is at the helm. My co-stars MPrabhas and Deepika are also of that generation . I have worked with Amit Ji before . Yet every time it feels like the first time. Amit Ji keeps reinventing himself. I am also emulating that inventive process. I am eagerly waiting for Project K. Whatever position the audience place me at, my primary quality is that I am a film buff. That quality will keep applauding any new attempt in my industry. Let mine be the first applause for Project K. With our director Nag Ashwin’s vision I am sure that applause will echo across our country and the world of cinema.”

Director Nag Ashwin also shared his excitement about Kamal Haasan joining the cast of the film. He said, “For an actor like Kamal sir, who has done so many iconic roles, it’s a huge honour to attempt to do something new. We are all super excited and privileged that he agreed to come onboard and complete our world.”

‘Project K’ is a bilingual film shot simultaneously in two languages i.e Hindi and Telugu across various locations. The film will also mark Deepika’s debut in the Telugu film market.

Himachal's mandi flood

Several Vehicles Washed Away In Himachal’s Flash Flood Mandi

Incessant rains in the last 24 hours, have caused extensive damage in several parts of Mandi district. At the same time, roads have been shut in many areas. Several vehicles were washed away due to flash flood in a rivulet at Janjehli in Mandi district.

Many houses located downstream are facing risk and incidents of landslides have been reported at many places across the district.
The water level in the Beas River flowing through Mandi has increased due to overnight rains in the hilly areas.

Heavy damage has been reported due to rain in the Panchayat “Manthla” of Sadar Vidhansabha in Mandi district. The community hall of Manthala Panchayat and a natural water source have been severely hit due to flash floods owing to torrential rains at night. The rooms of the community hall were filled with debris and stones.

Sadar MLA Anil Sharma reached the spot to meet the affected and took stock of the situation. The MLA has given instructions to the Jal Shakti Department including the Administration and PWD for relief and road restoration.

In the last 24 hours, Mandi has received 64.4 mm of rainfall.

Other parts of the states have also reported damages due to heavy rain. Several vehicles were washed away in Kullu district. Eight vehicles were washed in Maohal rivulet near Kullu town.

The District Emergency Operation Centre (DEOC) Chamba informed that an incident of Road Accident occurred at Place Khadamukh on Khadamukh-Holi Road. Due to this incident, one car fell NHPC-II dam. The number of people who were travelling is not confirmed. Search and rescue operation is going by Police Team Bharmour.

DEOC Solan informed an incident of Cloud Burst occurred at Mahaal Mangal Kathpol sub-division Arki. 30-35 goats were washed away due to this incident. A search and rescue operation is going on. (ANI)

Afghanistan: Women’s Integrated Services Centre To Be Set Up In Kabul

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in collaboration with the Afghanistan Women’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AWCCI) are partnering to set up a Women’s Integrated Services and Facilities Centre in Kabul, Khaama Press reported.

The UNHCR said the integrated services and facilities centre will support women-run businesses, training programs, and financial support to female entrepreneurs.
The initiative was launched with UNODC and AWCCI, aimed at supporting women-run businesses, training programs and more, UNHCR tweeted on Friday, according to Khaama Press.

Moreover, the organization said that the centre will help internally displaced people and Afghan refugees who have returned to the country.

The business centre for Afghan women will be established following the series of bans imposed by the Taliban regime restricting women and girls from having social and political engagements in Afghanistan for the past nearly two years, as per Khaama Press.

A large number of businesswomen and female entrepreneurs have been forced to stay at home since the Taliban seized power in August 2021.

Whereas, a group of Afghan women entrepreneurs created a local market exclusively for women in Faizabad city of northeastern Badakhshan province which aimed at improving the economic well-being of needy families, according to Khaama Press. (ANI)

Cadres of KYKL Release

Manipur: 12 Cadres Of KYKL Released After Women-Led Mob Stops Army

Security forces launched a search operation and apprehended 12 Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) cadres but had to release them to local leaders after a mob of over 1200 people led by women, surrounded the target area and prevented them from continuing with the operation, stated an official release from Defence PRO.

The search operation was carried out acting on specific intelligence, in village Itham (06 km East of Andro) in Imphal East district on June 24 morning. The forces seized arms, ammunition and war-like stores.
“The area was cordoned before the specific search commenced to avoid inconvenience to the locals. The operation resulted in the apprehension of 12 KYKL cadres along with arms, ammunition and war-like stores,” it read.

It stated that a mob of approximately 1200-1500, led by women and the local leader immediately surrounded the target area and prevented Security Forces from continuing with the operation, despite repeated appeals, to the aggressive mob, as per law. However, it did not yield any positive results.

“Keeping in view the sensitivity of the use of kinetic force against a large irate mob and envisaged casualties due to such action, the officer on the ground made a considerate decision to hand over all 12 cadres to the local leader. Own columns lifted the cordon and left the area with weapons and war-like stores, recovered from insurgents,” it read.

According to the press release, self-styled Lt Col Moirangthem Tamba alias Uttam was positively identified.

“He was the mastermind of an ambush on the 6th battalion of the DOGRA case in 2015 and was amongst the apprehended cadres,” it read.

As per an official release, a mature decision on the part of the Operational Commander displays the humane face of the Indian Army, making all efforts to avoid any collateral damage and denies the scope of escalating the situation, during the ongoing unrest in Manipur.

Indian Army further appealed to the people of Manipur to assist the Security Forces in maintaining law and order to bring peace and stability. (ANI)

IAF Carries Out Exercise Ranvijay With Focus On Integrated Ops

With a focus on integration, the Indian Air Force carried out Exercise Ranvijay where day and night operations by combat aircraft including the Su-30s were conducted.

“Exercise Ranvijay was conducted in UB Hills and Central Air Command Area of Responsibility from June 16-23 wherein full spectrum operations by all combat assets by day and night were carried out,” Central Air Command of the IAF said.

“The focus was on Integrated operations while optimally exploiting electronic warfare capabilities of the Indian Air Force,” CAC added.

The exercise was carried out from different air bases of the command headquartered in Prayagraj.

Different IAF commands have been carrying out wargames and aerial drills to enhance jointness with the other two services as part of the government’s move to strengthen integration among the forces. (ANI)
