Sibal at AAP Rally

‘This Is Double-Barrel Govt’: Sibal Slams Centre At AAP Rally

Former Congress leader Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Sunday hit out at the Central Government accusing it of misusing the central agencies. He called the PM Modi-led BJP government a double-barrel government- one barrel is ED and the second barrel is CBI.

Sibal said this while addressing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) mega rally in Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan.

“I remember before 2014 when we were in the UPA government, Arvind Kejriwal used to oppose us. But times have changed, governments have changed, and prime ministers have changed. He (PM Narendra Modi) said, you have given 60 years to Congress, now just give seven months to us, and we will make India progressive and he did change India’s map in 120 months. He made the media, Election Commission, and Enforcement Directorate (ED) CBI sit on his lap,” Sibal added while hitting out at the BJP government.

“PM Modi always talks about double engine government, but the aim is to destroy the entire opposition. This is a double-barrel government, ED and CBI. The constitution says that three things will be at the Center- Land, Police and Public Order and the Kejriwal government of Delhi will not be able to interfere with them. Apart from this, there will be no power with the Centre.”

Sibal further said that the assembly was made so that people can get their work done but actually what PM Modi wants is being done.

He claimed that the PM Modi-led BJP government’s only aim is to destroy the entire opposition.

Calling for a united fight against the PM Modi-led BJP government, Sibal said, “My purpose in the coming days will be to go to different places and tell people that the time has come, we need to unite and fight against PM Modi”.

“In the coming days, I will go to every state and appeal that we have to fight against PM Modi. Just like PM Modi’s ‘Mann ki Baat’, I want to share mine. Today, the public is grinding. There is no department through which the common people are getting benefitted. I made a decision a few months ago that we are starting a website- Soldiers of Justice. I would like to appeal to Arvind Kejriwal to urge people to join,” he said in his speech.

He further added, “The decisions are taken by the government and the secretary has to follow them, but he said that the secretary will remain with us. The matter went to court and the Supreme Court decided that the responsibility of the secretary would remain with the cabinet. It is expected that the Supreme Court will set aside the decision. If there is an attack on the Constitution, we all stand together and oppose it.”

“Together we will defeat Modi ji on one platform,” Kapil Sibal added.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) organised a mega rally at Delhi’s Ramlila ground on Sunday against the Centre’s Ordinance on control over administrative services in the national capital.

Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal, his Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann, Delhi Minister Gopal Rai, party MP Sanjay Singh and other party leaders attended the rally. (ANI)

‘Security Apparatus of A District Court Must Be On Par With High Court’

Arun Verma, a lawyer at Lucknow civil court where a gangster was shot down on June 7, says police must learn its lessons from the horrific incident. His views:

Early this week, in a first of its kind incident, a gangster named Sanjeev aka Jeeva was shot down inside the Lucknow civil court premises. Barely half an hour before the shooting, a man brandishing a knife tried to attack his wife, a lawyer, in a brazen attempt to kill her. Mercifully, he was overpowered by the lawyers and handed over to the police.

In the Jeeva shootout case also, the cops present inside the courtroom were seen running for cover after the first shot was fired. Here too, the shooter was overpowered by the lawyers. If a person, be it an accused or an under trial, is not safe inside the court or the courtroom, what is the guarantee of his/her life in the state? The shooter had disguised himself as a lawyer with the professional black coat attire, cocking a snook at the ever deteriorating scrutiny at the entrance.

Clearly, there is no fear among criminals to carry out daring attacks on the court premises because of lax security and careless policing. A casual look at the court premises blueprint will give you a better idea. Of the eight entry and exit points in the civil court, only five are fitted with Door Frame Metal Detectors. The less said about the alertness of the security personnel on duty, the better. The police guards at the entry points are mostly busy fiddling with their phones; the metal detector beeps fall on deaf ears.

Two days after the killing, six UP Police personnel were suspended for dereliction of duty. However, the action is a cosmetic measure. After a few months of inquiry, the suspension will be revoked and they will report back on duty. All this is a familiar occurrence. After every breach of security in courts, a pattern is followed: Representatives of lawyers and top police officials hold meetings; beefing up the security is agreed upon; briefly there are more boots on the ground; then after a few weeks everything is back to Square One.

ALSO READ: ‘There Is Something Fishy About Atiq-Ashraf Killing’

The requirement for better security in lower courts is a long pending demand of lawyers. The legal fraternity wants the security of a district court to be at par with that of state high court, where a standard operating procedure is followed for surveillance and scrutiny of the visitors. Entry passes, identity cards must be verified by trained personnel and only the genuine complainants, litigants and lawyers must be permitted inside after proper body scan and luggage checking. This is not a complex procedure to follow but the will is missing.

The Jeeva shootout incident is yet another setback to the tall claims of the police and the administration regarding the law and order situation in the state after two dreaded criminals, Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf, were shot dead in full security cover while being taken for a routine medical checkup. It’s high time that such incidents be taken serious note of before the government and police image is irreparably damaged.

As told to Rajat Rai

Centre’s Attitude Towards Harassment of Women is Primitive and Despicable

Nearly five months. That is how long it took for a minister of the government of India to finally take note of the protests by women wrestlers and meet them, many of them Olympians and national-level champions, against alleged sexual harassment by the president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The women wrestlers have accused the 66-year-old Singh, of groping, touching the breasts and navels without consent and demanding sexual favours from women wrestlers during his ongoing stint as the boss of the federation.

The wrestlers, who were supported by many of their male peers in the sport (but also conspicuously not supported by many Indian sportspersons, including women athletes such as the sprint champion P.T. Usha) took to the streets with their protests, assembling at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar for the first time in January this year. After they were assured that a committee formed by the government would look into it, the protests were called off. But in April, after the committee submitted its report, the protestors felt it was biased and favoured the accused and they resumed the protests.

The protests soon turned political with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ostensibly supporting the accused who, incidentally, is a member of the party and an MP with considerable clout, facing off against most of the leading opposition parties. Police tried to forcibly remove the protestors from the venue of the protests and in the skirmishes many leading athletes were subjected to violence.

Singh has all along denied the charges and a police FIR filed by his accusers has till now basically led nowhere. Last week, after nearly five months since the accusations were made, a government minister finally met the protestors and assured them that a swift probe would be undertaken. On that assurance, the wrestlers have called off their protests for now.

The thing is India’s attitude towards sexual harassment is very primitive. During the years that the #MeToo movement gathered momentum throughout the world, and charges against leading personalities in entertainment, media, politics, and many other fields led to either their downfall or prosecution, or both, in India also there were a spurt of allegations against noted celebrities, politicians, editors, and others. Almost all of those who were then accused of sexual harassment have remained unscathed. Many of them are back in business and continue to hog the media limelight quite shamelessly. If Brij Bhushan Singh, a grandfather accused of groping young athletes, goes scot free, do not be surprised.

Will Nitish be the one to bell the cat?

Nitish Kumar, chief minister of Bihar, is an astute politician. He is also wily and opportunistic. He has never been averse to switching sides to suit his political ambitions. Those who have followed his moves have seen him ally with the BJP when it suits him; and then ditch that alliance when it doesn’t. Like many powerful regional leaders, Kumar, 72, has long harboured ambitions of becoming the prime minister of India. Now, he his putting together his plans to try and achieve those dreams.

A few weeks back, Kumar proposed a joint opposition strategy to challenge the BJP at the Centre in next year’s parliamentary elections. The idea was to have a convenor (read: Nitish Kumar, of course) who would rally the leaders of the main opposition parties to join hands and form a coalition that would together  field one strong candidate, irrespective of which constituent of the coalition he or she represented, against the BJP candidate in each parliamentary constituency. So, in each constituency that had a BJP candidate contesting, the coalition would choose one candidate who was best suited to defeat the BJP contender.

Some opposition leaders seem to be buying into the idea. Later this month, at a meeting convened by Kumar in Patna, several opposition leaders are scheduled to meet. According to reports, those who have confirmed include Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, and the chief ministers of Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Delhi.

India’s national level politics is littered with the remains of unsuccessful coalition governments: they usually start with promise but end with acrimonious bickering, which is, as you might have already guessed, all over power, position, and pelf. It would be interesting to see whether Kumar’s proposal, which would require parties to swallow their pride and support their rivals in each parliamentary constituency, does actually take off.

The hoopla over the Miss World contest is so anachronistic

Newspapers in India have been gushing about India’s chance to host the Miss World finals once again after 27 years. Miss World is one of the oldest international beauty pageants, created in the United Kingdom by Eric Morley in 1951 Since Morley’s death in 2000, his widow, Julia Morley, co-chairs the pageant. The pageant has grown into one of the world’s biggest and has raised more than £1 billion for children’s charities that help disabled and underprivileged children.

But, the competition, open to women from all over the world who are between the ages of 16 and 27, is said to be one where contestants are judged on their beauty, talent and intelligence, in reality it is a regressive objectification of women.

If India took the lead to initiate, say, a competition that was gender neutral and judged young contestants on the basis of their personalities and intelligence regardless of their gender then that could have been a more thought-provoking headline rather than the swooning excitement that media have been exuding about this year’s Miss World contest, which will once again judge women as objects.

Russia-Ukraine war continues…

The Nova Kakhovka dam on Ukraine’s Dnieper river collapsed on Tuesday, flooding villages, endangering crops and threatening drinking water supplies as both sides in the war scrambled to evacuate residents and blamed each other for the destruction. Ukraine accused Russia of blowing up the dam, which is in an area that Russia has been controlling since the early days of the ongoing war. Russia has, however, denied the accusations and blamed Ukraine for bombing the area.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has ratcheted up its counter-offensive against Russia to recapture territory that it has lost. The attacks have been small thus far but a larger offensive is expected soon.

WTC Final Virat Kohli

All Eyes on Virat To Create History On WTC Final Day

All eyes are on India’s star batter Virat Kohli as India is chasing the mammoth 444-run target on the Fifth day of the World Test Championship (WTC) final at the Oval in London on Sunday.

Virat who failed to deliver in the first innings, learnt from his mistake and batted solidly in the second innings. He is at the crease with 44 (60)*.

India’s run machine on the fourth day of WTC final joined an elite list as he became the fifth Indian batter to score more than 2000 runs against Australia.

‘Master Blaster’ Sachin Tendulkar still holds the record for scoring the highest number of runs against Australia, at 3,630. At second is VVS Laxman with 2,434 runs. The third position is held by the current Indian head coach Rahul Dravid, who has scored 2,143 runs against the Australian team.

The experienced Cheteshwar Pujara is the fourth batter on the list with 2,074 runs. Virat Kohli is at fifth with 2,037* runs.

He has an excellent record against Australia in all formats of the game as he has scored more than 5000 runs in 93 matches with an average of 51.05. He has also bagged 16 hundreds and 24 fifties against Aussies.

Virat also holds a reputation for scoring the most runs in WTC by the Indian batter.

Meanwhile, an eventful Day 4 of the WTC final came to a close with Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane holding India’s fort.

At the end of the fifth day, India scored 164/3 in 40 overs with Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli at the crease with scores of 20(59)* and 44(60)*.

After the arguable dismissal of Shubman Gill in the second innings, Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara kept the scoreboard moving.

But Rohit Sharma became the target of Nathan Lyon and Pujara was dismissed by Pat Cummins’s bowling.

India was down to 93/3, From that point, Rahane and Kohli took on the Australian bowlers and subdued them with their defensive skills and attacking shots. They went on to build an unbeaten 71-run partnership at the end of the day.

India ended the day with 164/3 and they still need 280 runs to win the game. (ANI)

Manipur Armed Rioters

Internet Ban Extended in Manipur Till June 15

Manipur Government has extended the ban on internet services in the crisis-hit state for another five days till June 15.

“The internet ban has been further extended for another five days to curb the spread of false news, rumours and misinformation through social media platforms which have the potential to disturb law and order situations in the state”, stated an official release.

According to the statement, the internet ban has been extended till 3 pm on June 15.

Meanwhile, Manipur Information and Public Relations Minister DR Sapam Ranjan on Saturday said that no untoward incident has been reported from any part of the state in the last 24 hours indicating the return of normalcy in the state.

Addressing the media persons, the minister said that 349 relief camps are presently operational across Manipur.

Manipur has seen ethnic violence with Chief Minister N Biren Singh stating earlier this month that around 60 people have lost their lives in the clashes. Houses have also been burnt during the violence, with new incidents also reported from some parts of the state.

The minister further said that out of the total looted 4,537 arms, the state government has recovered 990 arms.

The minister further said that the state has been taking up all appropriate security measures to restore peace and harmony.

On Saturday, Security Forces conducted Joint Combing Operations for the fourth day in sensitive areas both in the hills and valleys following violence and ethnic clashes in the state and recovered 22 weapons.

Meanwhile, the central government constituted a Peace Committee in Manipur under the chairpersonship of the Governor. The panel is aimed at facilitating the peace-making process among various ethnic groups in the state.

The committee was formed days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah had announced that a peace panel will be put together to ensure that normality is restored to Manipur at the earliest. He made the announcement after taking stock of the situation in Manipur during his four-day visit to the state between May 29 to June 1.

Manipur has been in the throes of ethnic violence for a month, in the wake of a directive of the high court asking the state government to consider including the Meitei community in the list of Scheduled Tribes (STs).

The Centre had to deploy paramilitary forces as violence escalated in the Northeast state.

Violence erupted on May 3 during a rally organised by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) to protest the demand for the inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category. (ANI)

AAP Rally

AAP’s Rally Against Central Ordinance Today At Ramilila Maidan

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is organising a mega rally at Delhi’s Ramlila ground on Sunday against the Centre’s Ordinance on control over administrative services in the national capital.

Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal, his Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann, Delhi Minister Gopal Rai and party MP Sanjay Singh will address the rally today. Gopal Rai will speak as the party’s delhi convenor.

Notably, eminent lawyer and former Union Minister Kapil Sibal will address the rally and speak about the legal and constitutional aspects of the ordinance. Sibal is attending the rally at the invitation of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Delhi Police has made a heavy security deployment around the Ramlila Maidan in view of the rally.

From May 23, Kejriwal embarked on a nationwide tour to seek support from the Opposition parties against the Ordinance.

The AAP national convenor has so far met with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo Sharad Pawar, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar and his deputy Tejashwi Yadav.

On Wednesday, Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal said that if non-BJP parties come together, then the Centre’s ordinance can be defeated in Rajya Sabha. He said this would send a strong message that the Modi government will not come to power in 2024.

The Union government on May 19 brought an ordinance to notify rules for the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) regarding the ‘transfer posting, vigilance and other incidental matters’.

The ordinance was brought to amend the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991 and it circumvents the Supreme Court judgement in the Centre vs Delhi case. (ANI)

Defence Minister Singh was interacting with intellectuals at Gopal Narayan Singh University Rohtas, Bihar where he said, “BJP fulfils promises, we abolished Article 370 and the grand Ram temple is now being built. He said that water has reached around 12 crore homes in the country through taps.

“Today, water has reached around 12 crore homes in the country through taps. In the year 2014, there was no electricity in about 18,000 villages. Today electricity has reached every house,” said Rajnath Singh.

He further added that India’s economic growth is tremendous and is progressing very fast.

“Now India’s economic growth is tremendous. Today, India is progressing very fast. India has joined the top 5 economies of the world. Morgan Stanley has said that India will be counted among the top 3 economies of the world by 2027,” said Singh.

He further shed light that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a system where every hundred paise is reaching the bank account of the people.

“Today, the maximum number of digital transactions are taking place in India. Earlier people used to say that digital transactions are not possible in a country like India. Today a large number of digital transactions are taking place in Bihar as well,” he said.

Sakshi Malik WFI

Will Take Part In Asian Games Only If Harassment Issue Resolved: Sakshi

Olympic medallist Sakshi Malik, who has been part of the protest against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over sexual harassment allegations, on Saturday said that protesting wrestlers will participate in the Asian Games only after their “issues get resolved”.

“We will participate in Asian Games only when all these issues will be resolved. You can’t understand what we’re going through mentally each day,” Sakshi Malik said at the Mahapanchayat held today in Sonipat, Haryana.
Asian Games 2023 will take place in the coming September in China, however, wrestlers’ withdrawal from the tournament can heavily affect India, as Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat were the gold medallist in the last Asian Games 2018.

Earlier this morning, Olympian Bajrang Punia said that they will put forward their discussions with the government before the people supporting them during the Mahapanchayat.

“Whatever talks we had with the government, we will discuss that with the people who are supporting and standing with us…,” Punia told ANI.

Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur had said on Thursday that the talks with protesting wrestlers were positive and decisions were taken on various demands.

“It was a very positive discussion with the agitating wrestlers. All the issues that came from their side were discussed seriously. We have said that the chargesheet will be filed by June 15 and the Wrestling Federation of India’s elections will be held by June 30. For the players, the Internal Complaint Committee will be formed and a woman player or an official will be made its chairperson,” Thakur told reporters on the sidelines of an event here.

He said that the names of two coaches have also been proposed by wrestlers for the ad-hoc committee of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). “They will be made its members,” he said.

Thakur said that the wrestlers conveyed that they will apprise their supporters about the talks.

“We also want the players to return to the mat soon and participate in competitions ahead,” he said.

The wrestlers had met Anurag Thakur on Wednesday following a fresh offer by the government for talks.

Delhi Police is conducting a probe into the sexual harassment allegations against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a BJP MP, following the registration of the FIR. (ANI)

Karnataka poll promises

Will Fulfill All Poll Promises: Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday said that there is no confusion regarding Griha Lakshmi and Griha Jyoti schemes, two among five guarantees which were promised in the Congress manifesto, and asserted his government will do what it had said.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, CM asked how many promises were fulfilled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Answering a reporter’s question about the guarantee schemes, the CM said that we (the state government) would do what we had said (poll promises). “Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made many promises but how many of them had been fulfilled?,” he questioned.

He said that he would be attending a program organized for party workers in his constituency to thank them. CM left for Mysuru later.

Legislators of Mysure and Chamarajanagar districts will be participating in the program, he said.

Earlier, CM Siddaramaiah announced that all five guarantees will be implemented in the current financial year at a cost of approximately Rs 50,000 crore every year.

“We had a long consultation. It will be given in this financial year itself,” Siddaramaiah said earlier in the month.

The five ‘main’ guarantees, which Congress promised to fulfil after coming to power in Karnataka, were 200 units of free power to all households (Gruha Jyoti); Rs 2,000 monthly assistance to the woman head of every family (Gruha Lakshmi); 10 kg of rice free to every member of a BPL household (Anna Bhagya); Rs 3,000 every month for unemployed graduate youth and Rs 1,500 for unemployed diploma holders (both in the age group of 18-25) for two years (Yuva Nidhi) and free travel for women in public transport buses (Uchita Prayana).
