Venkatesh had on Saturday said that if buffaloes can be slaughtered, why not cows. This did not go down well with the BJP who came down heavily on the Siddaramaiah government.

On Monday, Siddaramaiah defended Venkatesh claimed there was lack of clarity in the cow slaughter scheme brought by the previous BJP government and it will be discussed in the upcoming Cabinet meeting.

The Karnataka BJP also alleged that the State government is not delivering on its five poll guarantees.

Siddaramaiah has said that the BJP has no moral right to protest against the Congress’ poll guarantees. Siddaramaiah was speaking to mediapersons here after garlanding former Karnataka Chief Minister Devaraja Arasu’s statue in the Vidhana Soudha premises.

“BJP is an anti-people party,” he said adding that when the opposition party was in power they had looted the State. The BJP stopped giving benefits under Indira Canteen, Shoe Bhagya and cycles to students.

Siddaramaiah said that the State government will provide 10 hours of free electricity to the people and will also waive off loans.

These five ‘main’ guarantees promised by the Congress during the poll were, 200 units of free power to all households (Gruha Jyoti); Rs 2,000 monthly assistance to the woman head of every family (Gruha Lakshmi); 10 kg of rice free to every member of a BPL household (Anna Bhagya); Rs 3,000 every month for unemployed graduate youth and Rs 1,500 for unemployed diploma holders (both in the age group of 18-25) for two years (Yuva Nidhi) and free travel for women in public transport buses (Uchita Prayana). ‘₹2000-Note Withdrawal Will Pinch Only Hoarders, Not Commoners’

Nitin Khanna, a Chartered Accountant based in Lucknow, says the current currency withdrawal is soft demonetisation, not comparable to the 2016 exercise. His views:

Withdrawal of high-denomination notes is a routine exercise the world over and is often used as a measure to curtail black marketing and bring the hoarded currency into formal circulation. We all remember how it created panic in 2016 when both ₹1000 and ₹500 notes were withdrawn, causing much distress to common people. This time, however, the issue is different. Allow me to explain.

First, this time the withdrawal is a soft demonetization process. There is four-month window to exchange the notes which gives ample buffer and breathing space for the exchange. More important, ₹2000 comprises only 10.8 per cent of total printed currency in circulation as the printing of this highest-value legal tender was stopped in 2018-19. So, considering the long period for exchange and the low volume of notes soften the process.

Besides, the poor masses hardly keep such high-value currency notes in hand while the middle class has them in small volumes. So, the only section which may feel the pinch is the hoarders of large amount of cash for transactions outside the ambit of taxation. Thus in the end it will only benefit our formal finance sector.

ALSO READ: No Need To Rush For Exchange, Advises RBI

The cash component is used mostly for high-value real estate transaction or in sale and purchase of precious metal and stones. This is the reason, that there was a sudden spurt in real estate or jewelry shops transactions soon after the announcement of ₹2000 note withdrawal. Being a Chartered Accountant, I noticed this myself. So, the unaccounted currency is being pushed into formal circulation. This is a good sign for the economy.

On the lighter note, the move is bound to bring more income tax litigations for professionals like us. As I mentioned transactions have shot up from the minute the RBI declared the withdrawal. Individual fresh sales of ₹2-3 crore against available cash balance are being reported every day. This means more work for CAs and finance professionals. There are still pendency related to tax litigations from the demonetization of 2016 and now this fresh ‘outbreak’. You see we have more work at hand now.

One negative aspect of this announcement is that many shopkeepers are refusing to accept ₹2000 notes though there are some cases where shops-owners are welcoming customers with offers to use the same currency notes. But overall, the Reserve Bank of India has laid down very lenient process for exchange and re-use of these notes. So for the common man, there is little to worry about.

People must realize that every currency note has an expiry date or value period. This is particularly true for the high-value denomination. It is thus desirable to use digitized or formal procedures while making high-value transactions in a sale or purchase deal. Taxations reforms will continue to create hardships for black marketers and tax-evaders.

Rajnath Singh and his German counterpart Boris Pistorius

Rajnath, German Counterpart Boris Hold Bilateral Talks

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his German counterpart Boris Pistorius held a bilateral meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday.

A host of bilateral defence cooperation issues, with a focus on industrial cooperation, are likely to be discussed during the meeting.
Pistorius, who is on a four-day visit to India, was accorded a Guard of Honour at Manekshaw Centre in the presence of Rajnath Singh in Delhi. He also laid a wreath at National War Memorial in the national capital.

Pistorius, who arrived in the national capital yesterday is accompanied by a German delegation.

Pistorius is likely to meet a few defence start-ups during an event organised by Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) in New Delhi, the Ministry of Defence earlier said in a statement.

Bilateral ties between India and Germany are founded on common democratic principles and are marked by a high degree of trust and mutual respect, according to the Ministry of External Affairs. India was amongst the first countries to establish diplomatic ties with Germany after the Second World War.

On June 7, the German Federal Minister of Defence will visit Mumbai where he is likely to visit Western Naval Command Headquarters and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited.

Ahead of his visit to India, the German Defence Minister said India’s continuing dependence on Russian weapons is not in Germany’s interest, German news agency Deutsche Welle (DW) reported.

“It is not up to Germany to change that on our own,” Pistorius said in an exclusive interview with DW’s top political correspondent Nina Haase in Jakarta. Pistorius was in Jakarta ahead of his four-day visit to India.

“This is an issue we have to solve jointly with other partners. But of course, we can’t have an interest in the long run that India is so dependent on Russia’s delivery of weapons or other materials,” he added.

Pistorius said that Germany is ready to support partners like India. He said, “I want to send a signal that we are willing to support our partners, our reliable partners like Indonesia, like India,” DW reported. (ANI)

Pakistan-led espionage case

NIA Raids 10 Places In Punjab, Haryana In Case Against Khalistan Tiger Force

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday conducted searches at 10 locations in Punjab and Haryana in a case linked to banned terrorist organization Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF).

The raids were being conducted at nine locations in Punjab and one in Haryana in connection with a criminal conspiracy hatched to raise funds for the banned terrorist outfit and also smuggle arms, ammunition and explosives for it from across the border.
The NIA had registered a suo moto case on August 20 last year under various sections of Indian Penal Code and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

In the same case, the NIA arrested two ‘wanted’ close associates of Canada based ‘listed terrorist’ Arsh Dhalla on May 19 this year soon after they arrived at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) from Manila, Philippines, where they had been living.

The duo, identified as Amritpal Singh alias Ammy and Amritk Singh, both hailing from Punjab, were nabbed in an early morning operation by the NIA, whose team was waiting at the Airport for their flight to land.

The NIA earlier informed that the two accused had non-bailable arrest warrants issued against them by the NIA Delhi Court in a case related to the unlawful and violent activities of banned organisations in India. The accused have several criminal cases registered against them in Punjab.

The NIA investigations have revealed that the accused had been working for individual designated terrorist Arshdeep Singh Dhalla to promote violent criminal activities of the KTF in India.

In association with another notorious wanted accused Manpreet Singh alias Peeta, the NIA has said, the two accused had been involved in smuggling weapons from Pakistan and recruitment of youth to carry out acts of violence and terror in the country at the behest of the KTF.

“They were also part of an extortion racket for raising funds for the banned outfit. The accused used to identify extortion targets, including businessmen, and then threaten them into parting with huge amounts. In case the identified targets refused, their homes and other premises would be fired at by the accused’s India-based associates,” the NIA said.

The arrests were part of NIA’s continuous crackdown on individual terrorists and terrorist outfits engaged in a criminal conspiracy to smuggle terrorist hardware, such as arms, ammunition and explosives, and raise funds for carrying out terrorist acts on the Indian soil. (ANI)
