Death Toll Climbs To 288 In Odisha Train Crash

The death toll from a three-train crash in Odisha’s Balasore has climbed to 288, Indian Railways said on Saturday.

“As of 2 pm today, the death toll in the Odisha train crash has risen to 288 while 747 people have been injured along with 56 grievously injured,” Indian Railways said in a statement.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached the train crash site in Odisha’s Balasore. He was accompanied by Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The three-way accident involved Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Coromandel Express and goods train on three separate tracks at Bahanaga Bazar Station in Odisha’s Balasore district. According to Odisha Government’s Special Relief Commissioner’s office 17 coaches of the two trains had derailed and severely damaged.

At the site PM Modi spoke to Cabinet Secretary and Health Minister and asked them to ensure all needed help is provided to the injured and their families, government sources said.

After taking stock of crash incident, PM Modi visited Fakir Mohan Hospital, Balasore, where some of the passengers injured in Friday’s accident involving three trains were admitted.

After meeting the crash survivors, he said that directions have been given to probe the train accident and that whoever is found guilty will not be spared.

“It’s a painful incident. The government will not be able to bring them back, who lost their lives [in the accident], but the government is with their kin in this grief. This incident is very serious for the government. The government will leave no stone unturned for the treatment of those injured. Instructions have been given for every type of investigation and whoever is found guilty will not be spared,” PM Modi said.

“I also thank the Government of Odisha and all the officers of the administration here who tried to help the people with limited resources,” he said, adding that Railway is working towards track restoration.

He also thanked the people of Odisha, who came forward to help crash survivors, whether by donating blood or providing assistance in the rescue operation.

Earlier today, PM Modi convened a meeting to review the situation in connection with the rail accident.

Seven National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) Teams, five Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) Units and 24 Fire Services and Emergency Units engaged in rescue operations.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) deployed Mi-17 helicopters for the evacuation of the deceased and injured. According to the Eastern Command, IAF is coordinating the rescue efforts with the civil administration and Indian Railways.

The Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw earlier visited the site and directed a “high level” probe and said measures will be taken to ensure such incidents do not take place in future.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also visited the accident site to take stock of the situation. (ANI)

Ashwini Vaishnaw and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee

Odisha Train Case: Mamata-Vaishnaw Argument Over Death Toll Caught On Camera

Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee earlier on Saturday disagreed on the death toll in the Odisha train accident with their argument caught on camera.

Vaishnaw, who was standing with Mamata Banerjee while she was interacting with the media, sought to correct her when she suggested that the death toll could be as high as 500.
“I have heard it could be 500,” she said, adding that rescue work had not been completed in three bogies.

Vaishnaw said that rescue work has been completed.

She asked what is death toll after completion of rescue work. Vaishnaw responded that 238 people had died in the accident that involved two passenger trains and a goods train and added that the figure was according to the data from state government.

However, Mamata Banerjee insisted that the death toll figure given by the union minister was of Friday.

“It was yesterday. We have information from yesterday that it is 238…what the issue is we can talk about it together,” she said.

According to Indian Railways, the death toll in Odisha train tragedy is 288 while 747 people were injured along with 56 grievously injured.

The Trinamool Congress leader, who has been a former Railways minister, said she is pained and shocked at the accident and a proper inquiry should be conducted. The two passenger trains involved in the accident are linked to stations in Bengal.

Mamata Banerjee said Railways should be “specially treated”. She said the Railways had a separate budget and alleged that there was “coordination gap”.

“Railways is like our child. I also a member of Railway family,” she said, adding that they were ready to give suggestions to the minister.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan was also present along with Vaishnaw.

Later, Vaishnaw sought to play down the disagreement with Mamata Banerjee, saying this is not time to do politics but to see that restoration happens quickly.

“We want full transparency, this is not time to do politics, this is time to focus on making sure that restoration happens at the earliest,” he said when asked about Mamata Banerjee disagreeing with him on the death toll.

Mamata Banerjee reached Balasore on Saturday. She had earlier in the day termed the incident as “biggest railway accident of the 21st century”.

“Coromandel is one of the best express trains. I was the Railway Minister thrice. From what I saw, this is the biggest railway accident of the 21st century. Such cases are handed over to Railway’s safety commission and they investigate and give a report. There was no anti-collision device on the train, as far as I know. Had the device been on the train, this would not have happened. The dead can’t be brought back but now our work is rescue operation and restoration of normalcy,” Banerjee said

The preliminary report on the tragedy said that the three-way accident involved Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Coromandel Express and goods train on three separate tracks at Bahanaga Bazar Station in Balasore district. It had said that 17 coaches of these two trains were derailed and severely damaged in the accident that took place on Friday evening.

Vaishnaw had earlier said that a high-level probe will be conducted into the accident. He said Railway Safety Commissioner will do independent inquiry. (ANI)

‘Kerala Story Is An Eye-Opener; Conversion By Fraud Must End’

Dharmesh Bajpai, a businessman from Lucknow who recently watched the movie, feels the issue of religious conversion requires introspection and not dirty politics. His views:

I feel that The Kerala Story is an eye opener. The issue of religious conversion in India goes largely unnoticed as many women are cheated by miscreants and forced to convert for criminal or anti-national purposes. Everyone, especially young girls, women, and parents of the girl child should watch the film as it is a wake-up call to realize the gravity of the situation.

Both state and central governments must take the issue of religious conversion seriously and initiate concrete steps to stop the menace. These practices are being conducted in a very organized manner endangering our ethics, values, and national security at large. To be precise, all Hindu girls and their parents should watch the film. This is an in-your-face cinematic work for those who believe that love is blind and it has no boundaries. A marriage is a sacrosanct relationship and must not be built on false grounds.

Unlike other films that tried to touch the issue, The Kerala Story is a thought-provoking movie which does not pulls any punches. The moral of the story is to give your children the knowledge about your religion (Hinduism) as it educates them about the dangers and trappings of vested interests.

ALSO READ: ‘The Kerala Story Seeks To Alienate One Community’

There are many hard-hitting scenes in the film which force us to rethink about how we raise our children and important aspects of Hinduism or our culture that need to be passed on to the next generation without maligning other religions or values. For example, in the film, the actress, who portrays one of the victims, innocently asks his father as to why he did not pass on the learning and the `remedy’ when it is well mentioned and taught in Hinduism. The film also portrays how ‘grooming’ can put in danger the lives and psyches of young impressionable minds.

I am both amazed and anguished by the fact that the film is being dubbed as propaganda against one community when the real message is one that concerns our children safety from terrorism. But some states have been playing petty politics over the subject and trying to divert the real issue. It is also pitiful of the politicians who, in a bid to appease a particular community, are indirectly putting our national security in danger by fanning the misdeeds of infiltrators involved in this heinous activity.

I term the act as foolish and an attempt to keep away the viewers and the public from knowing the harsh reality. Are the governments in other states (that have made the film tax-free) any less concerned about the security and interest of their people?

I would also like to call upon Bollywood brigade and the 100-crore clubbers of Indian cinema to take stand on The Kerala Story. Don’t they have the guts to stand up and utter a word for a film that, in a way, is championing the national interest and exposing those who always hide behind liberal-secular facade?

Syria Back into Arab League

Syria Welcomed Back Into Arab League

Apparently it seems that the Arab League has lost its meaning and purpose and it is demonstrated by the manner in which member states takes its sessions in a non-serious manner. Morocco declined to host a summit in 2016, calling the event a waste of time. The Saudi crown prince Muhammad bin Salman, skipped last year’s gathering in Algeria on medical grounds. Heads of state are sometimes spotted falling asleep at the fora meetings.

But it seems that at the moment no one would relish the regional Arab body more than the Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, who seemed euphoric to be invited to the Arab summit, last week. Syria was suspended from the league in 2011, when Assad began a brutal crackdown on anti-government protests that plunged the country into a civil war

Assad’s deployment of chemical weapons against his own people along with mass arrests, torture and disappearances and killing of more than 3 million civilians in the country have no parallel elsewhere. This is a legacy, which he inherited from his father, Hafez al-Assad, who reportedly massacred more than 10,000 people in the city of Hama during a 1982 siege.

On 7th May, however, the regional Arab body agreed to readmit Syria to its fold. Though an invitation from a dull talking shop crammed with dictators may seem unappealing to many but to Assad, it is the culmination of a long effort to end his Arab isolation – and, he may hope, another step towards acceptance in the West.

US stand on Syria

However, Assad’s regional Arab acceptance creates a “problem” for the United States, which continues to oppose any sort of normalising ties with the Syrian government but has not been able to force its Arab partners from restoring ties with Damascus.

US officials maintain that though they do not back normalisation with al-Assad, they share the objectives that restored relations could bring, including expanding humanitarian access to conflict-torn regions, combating ISIL/ISIS, reducing Iran’s influence and countering the trafficking of the drug Captagon.

Mona Yacoubian, vice president of the Middle East and North Africa centre at the US Institute of Peace (USIP), a think tank funded by the US Congress, told Al Jazeera that the US position under President Joe Biden reflects a “tricky, gnarly, complex challenge”.

But without accountability for Syrian government abuses, she added, Washington will not normalise its relations with Damascus or ease its heavy sanctions, including the blocking of foreign reconstruction funds.

Making the US stand quite clear, the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said last week, “We do not believe that Syria merits readmission to the Arab League.”

Still, Blinken said Washington and its Arab allies have broader common objectives in Syria.

Last week, a group of bipartisan House representatives introduced a bill dubbed the Assad Anti-Normalisation Act, which aims to “hold the Assad regime, and its backers, accountable for their crimes against the Syrian people and deter normalization with the Assad regime”.

The bill is a sign that Congress will likely push Biden and future administrations to fully enforce Syria sanctions.

Syria’s Ostracisation

Syria was suspended from the Arab League and left isolated by regional power brokers in 2011 after its crackdown on protests during the Arab Spring, a wave of anti-government demonstrations across several countries in the region that year.

That heavy-handed security approach in Syria turned into a protracted war, killing hundreds of thousands of people and displacing millions.

In recent years, government forces recaptured much of Syria with the aid of Russia and Iran, and local ceasefires have maintained relative calm as parts of the country remain under the control of various rebels and armed groups.

Emerging Scenario

As to why Arab states are keen to bring Syria among their fold, there are many plausible reasons. One is to forge a broader spirit of detente. The Saudis struck a deal in March with Iran to restore diplomatic ties and reopen embassies. this came after years of proxy wars in Syria, Yemen by both and now both seems to have forgotten the past. Turkey and Egypt, mired in mutual economic crises, are trying to end a decade of animosity. Gulf states have ended their embargo of Qatar, which accomplished little. Old foes across the region are keen to pretend they are friends.

When it comes to Syria, however, they want something bigger in return. Its neighbours hope to get rid of millions of Syrian refugees. The 2 million or so in Lebanon, with a population of just 5 million, are seen as a burden, blamed unfairly for the country’s economic collapse. In Turkey the mood has also turned hostile. Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the main opposition candidate in the election on 26th May has vowed vows to send Syrians packing within two years if elected.

In addition, the West hope that mollifying Syria may result in it controlling its Captagon trade.  Syria has become the world’s leading producer of Captagon, an amphetamine that is a popular recreational drug in the Gulf. The scale of the Captagon trade is often exaggerated. Unconfirmed estimates put its annual value at $57bn. The real figure is probably an order of magnitude smaller – but that is still large enough to make it Syria’s top export.

Regardless of the future of US policy on Syria, the fact that Arab states are normalising with al-Assad is also a sign of the receding US political influence in the region.

Indeed, this seems to be a sad commentary on the Arab world and its dictatorial leaders who basically conspired to crushed the Arab Spring 12 years ago, instead of working for the betterment of their people. In reality the pro-democracy, pro-rights movement has not fizzled out; rather, it was clubbed to death by a conspiracy of the dictators.

Smooth, Safe Travel Is Every Citizen’s Right: Yogi

Asserting that every citizen has the right to a smooth and safe journey, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Saturday said that it is the responsibility of the government to ensure a safe journey for the travellers.

“It becomes the responsibility of the government to fulfil this right with the utmost sincerity and honesty, considering the trust with which a passenger travels,” he said.
Flagging off 93 new Rajdhani bus services and seven regular BS-6 buses, the Chief Minister said, “The statistics of deaths resulting from road accidents are extremely alarming. If we were to present the figures of road accidents for Uttar Pradesh within a year, a horrific scenario would unfold.”

“In one year, more lives are lost due to road accidents than COVID-19 has claimed in three years. Road accidents occur and innocent lives are lost due to overspeeding, poor road engineering, or rules violations”, added CM Yogi.

He stressed that increasing awareness and obeying the rules of the road can save many lives.

“Every life is precious to us, and it is also an invaluable asset for a family, a society, and a country”, Yogi said.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has called for a campaign to increase awareness and prevent traffic accidents and the deaths they cause. He stated that launching a comprehensive awareness campaign to prevent deaths from such accidents would be a national program. The central government and the Supreme Court have also expressed concerns about this issue repeatedly.

He further added, “On this occasion, arrangements should be made to enhance the existing programs of the Transport Corporation in a more effective manner. It should be our goal to provide this type of service to people who want to use the Transport Corporation’s buses for public transportation within Uttar Pradesh.

He mentioned that, if required, we must associate private operators with regulations to provide transportation and bus services to every village. If we can provide this facility to every village, it will be convenient for the people, and they will utilize public transport services.

Discussing the increasing demand for electric buses, CM stated that wherever electric bus services have been initiated, there is a new demand among the people.

“We have currently started electric bus service in 10 cities of Uttar Pradesh. Wherever we go, people are requesting us to start electric bus services in their areas as well. On this occasion, I would like to say that the time has come to ensure that bus stations are well-maintained, safe, and our bus services are in line with the demands of the people”, he said.

The Chief Minister further asserted that it is not necessary for us to rely solely on government funding to expand the fleet of the Transport Corporation. Our efforts should focus on increasing the existing resources of the Transport Corporation and involving private operators so that every village, every city is connected with excellent bus services. This will not only help in reducing the number of deaths caused by road accidents in Uttar Pradesh but also bring the fatality rate to a minimum level.

Earlier, CM Yogi congratulated the Uttar Pradesh Transport Corporation on completing 50 years of journey. At the beginning of his address, he mentioned that just a few months before independence, on May 15, 1947, a state-owned transportation service was initiated in Uttar Pradesh with the aim of providing smooth and safe travel to people.

This state-owned transportation service eventually progressed into the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation on June 1, 1972, becoming the largest unit of public transport in the state with the largest population in the country, said Yogi Adityanath.

On the occasion, the Minister of Transport, Dayashankar Singh, the Chief Secretary, Durga Shankar Mishra, the Chairman of the Transport Corporation, Prashant Trivedi, the Principal Secretary of Transport, Venkateshwar Lu, MD Masoom Sarwar, and other officials from the Transport Department were also present.
