Coromandel Express Collides With Goods Train In Balasore; 132 Injured

After a collision occurred between the passenger train and a goods train in Odisha’s Balasore district on Friday, leaving at least 132 people injured, an additional rescue team of Odisha Fire and Emergency Service comprising 26 members with advance rescue equipment of Odisha Fire and Disaster Response Academy Bhubaneswar moved to the train accident site for rescue operations, the Odisha government said.

Several coaches of the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express derailed near Bahanaga station in Odisha’s Balasore after hitting a goods train.
The injured have been shifted to Soro CHC, Gopalpur CHC, and Khantapada PHC, said Chief Secretary, Odisha.

According to the Railway Spokesperson Amitabh Sharma, the accident took place at around 7pm on Friday.

“At around 7pm, 10-12 coaches of the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express derailed near Baleswar and fell on the opposite track. After some time, another train from Yeswanthpur to Howrah dashed into those derailed coaches resulting in the derailment of its 3-4 coaches,” Sharma told ANI.

NDRF’s first team of 22 members from Balasore Railway Station (BLS) has already reached the site. Another team from Centralised Traffic Control (CTC) of 32 members started half an hour before, said officials.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has directed the state minister Pramila Mallik and Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) to reach the accident site immediately. Minister and SRC are heading towards the incident place.

After the accident, West Bengal CM Mamata shared emergency numbers after the Odisha train accident.

“We are coordinating with the Odisha government and South Eastern Railway for our people’s sake.”

The CM also shared emergency control room numbers 033-22143526 and 033-22535185.

Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) Rakesh Tikait

Arrest WFI Chief By June 9 or…: Tikait

Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) national spokesperson Rakesh Tikait on Friday warned the Central government that if WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, facing sexual harassment charges by country’s top wrestlers, is not arrested by June 9, then farmer leaders will hold panchayats across the nation in support of the grapplers.

Tikait, who attended a Khap panchayat held to express solidarity with wrestlers here, also said that if the demands are not met within the given time, they will go to the Jantar Mantar, Delhi.
“We have taken a decision that Govt must address the grievances of wrestlers and he (Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh) should be arrested otherwise we will go with wrestlers to Jantar Mantar, Delhi on June 9 and will hold panchayats across the nation,” Tikait said.

The Khap leaders also said that if they will not be allowed to sit at Jantar Mantar on June 9, then there will be an announcement of Andolan.

Earlier on Thursday, a Khap ‘mahapanchayat’ to discuss the ongoing protest by wrestlers against WFI chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was held in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar.

Khap leaders from Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi attended the Mahapanchayat on Thursday.

On Tuesday, Olympic medallists Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, and Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat went to Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar along with their supporters to immerse their medals in the Ganga river.

But after farm leaders persuaded them not to take the drastic step, the wrestlers decided not to throw their medals in the river.

The farm leaders have sought five days’ time to address their grievances.

The Delhi Police has filed two FIRs against WFI chief Singh.

While the first FIR relates to allegations by a minor wrestler and has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the second is related to outraging modesty.

However, Singh on Thursday alleged that the protesting wrestlers are changing their “demands and language” continuously and added that he still stands by his statement that he will hang himself if even one of the allegations against him is proven to be true.

“…First they (protesting wrestlers) had some other demand and later they demanded something else. They are changing their demands and language continuously. I had said that if even one case against me gets proven, I will hang myself…I stand by my statement..,” said Brij Bhushan to media in Gonda. (ANI)

Cong Has To Decide If It Is With Democracy Modi: Kejriwal

While seeking support against the Centre’s ordinance control over administrative services in Delhi, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday met his Jharkhand counterpart, Hemant Soren, in Ranchi.

Giving a strong message to the Congress party, Kejriwal said that the party has to decide whether it is with “democracy, constitution, and 140 crore people of the country or with PM Modi”.
Notably, Kejriwal had on May 23 embarked on a nationwide tour to seek support from the Opposition parties against the Ordinance.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor has so far met West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin former Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo Sharad Pawar, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and his deputy Tejashwi Yadav.

Addressing the joint press conference with his Jharkhand counterpart Hemant Soren, Kejriwal said, “Last month, a grave injustice was done to the people of Delhi. They were insulted and their democratic rights were snatched. In a landmark judgment on May 11, the Supreme Court ordered that the government elected by the people of Delhi will have the powers. But unfortunately, on May 19, the government circumvented the order by bringing the ordinance. The Modi government said that they won’t allow the elected government to function”.

“The ordinance will now go to the Parliament. BJP has the majority in Lok Sabha but in Rajya Sabha, it only has 93 out of 238 members. So, if all the non-BJP parties come together, this bill can be defeated,” he added.

He further called the ordinance an “attack on the foundation of democracy” and urged all the parties to come together against it.

“This is not just a matter of Delhi, but of the whole country. They (BJP) can bring a similar ordinance for Punjab, Rajasthan, Jharkhand or Tamil Nadu. This is tampering with the Constitution to seize the powers of the elected government and everyone should come up against it. We are going across the country and we have received good cooperation from all parties,” he said.

The AAP national convenor added, “I would like to thank Hemant Soren for assuring his support against the ordinance. I would also urge other parties to come against this undemocratic ordinance. This is an attack on the foundation of democracy. The way elected governments are toppled and ordinances are brought, we all have to come together”.

Responding to a reporter’s question on Congress’ stand on the ordinance, Kejriwal said, “Today, the Congress has to decide whether it is with democracy, constitution, 140 croe people of the country or with Modi Ji”.

Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren while assuring support to AAP, lashed out at the Centre and called it an “attack” on the ‘federal structure’ of the country.

“This ordinance is an attack on the federal system of the country as well the idea of Unity in Diversity. The Central government talks about federal structure but acts totally opposite. It is clear today that parties that are not the allies of BJP are facing almost the same situation. It is a matter of concern. The common people also play a huge role in Democracy,” Soren said while speaking to reporters.

Soren added, “So, this is not just an attack on the government but also on the people. We will have a deep discussion on the issue within the party as well and will work on how to proceed against this (ordinance) democratically. They (AAP) have raised voice against the ordinance and I hope that they succeed in their movement.”

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, who was also present during the press conference, slammed the Centre and accused BJP of wanting to “impose” its directions upon the elected governments of the state.

“Our movement is against the attempts of murdering the democracy in the country. We saw how our wrestlers had gone to immerse their medals. If timely voices are not raised, soon the ashes of democracy will have to be immersed,” he said.

CM Mann added, “The way ordinances are brought and the Governor imposes their decisions on the state governments. It has become ‘Elected vs Selected’. BJP want to impose their ‘selected’ candidate upon those ‘elected’ by the people. We all agree that we have to come together to save the democracy”.

The Union government on May 19 brought an ordinance to notify rules for the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) regarding the ‘transfer posting, vigilance and other incidental matters’.

The ordinance was brought to amend the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991 and it circumvents the Supreme Court judgement in the Centre vs Delhi case. (ANI)

So all of you who are ridiculed or looked down on at times for this bravery please know that the ones who do it do not hate you. India Dismayed To Learn Ariha Abruptly Shifted To Foster Care In Germany

The Indian embassy in Germany has been repeatedly requesting the German authorities to ensure the return of the child, who has been placed in the custody of Germany’s youth welfare in 2021, Ministry of External Affairs said adding that they are dismayed to learn that.

Addressing the briefing on Friday, Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, “We are dismayed to learn that the child was abruptly shifted away from her current foster parent to a specialised foster care arrangement. The manner in which this shift was carried out is a matter of concern. We and the parents believe that this rapid change is not in the child’s best interest and could have far-reaching consequences for her emotional and mental development.”
He further stated, “We would like to reiterate that Ariha Shah is an Indian national and her nationality and socio-cultural background is the most important determinant of where her foster care is to be provided. We urge German authorities to do all that is necessary to send Ariha to India at the earliest, which is also her inalienable right as an Indian national. We remain committed to ensuring the return of Ariha Shah to India.”

Talking about the case, Bagchi said that the Ministry of External Affairs and the Embassy of India, Berlin, have been persistently advocating for the return of Ariha Shah to India. The child is an Indian national and she was placed in the custody of Germany’s Youth Welfare Office (Jugendamt) on 23 September 2021, when she was 7 months old. She has now been in foster care for more than 20 months.”

The child, Ariha Shah was accidentally hurt by her grandmother in September 2021, following which the German authorities took the baby away.

He further stated that the efforts have been guided by the best interests of the child, which India believe can be fully realised only when she is in her home country where her socio-cultural rights can be safeguarded.

Accordingly, the Embassy have been requesting Germany to return the child to India. The Embassy has repeatedly requested German authorities to ensure that Ariha’s connection with her cultural, religious and linguistic background is not compromised and sought consular access to the child as well as cultural immersion at the Indian Cultural Centre in Berlin, he stated.

He also quoted German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock statement on the case suring her visit to India, “also bearing in mind the cultural identity of each child that is taken care of by the youth offices in Germany.” Unfortunately our requests in this regard for safeguarding Ariha’s national and cultural identity have not been met.

“India has a robust child welfare and protection system, and there are potential foster parents in India who are willing to bring up the child in her own socio-cultural milieu. The German authorities have been made aware of India’s child protection system and the details of potential foster parents have also been shared with them. Ariha’s continued placement in German foster care and infringement of her social, cultural and linguistic rights is of deep concern to the Government of India and the parents,” he added. (ANI)
