MP: 12-Yr-Old Girl Sold For Rs 40,000 In Bhopal; 5 Arrested

Five people have been arrested for abetting child marriage and human trafficking in Madhya Pradesh’s capital Bhopal, police said.

The arrests were made after women and child welfare department officials prevented the marriage of a 12-year-old tribal girl with a 27-year-old man on June 27 in a village under Gunaga police station limits near Bhopal, police said on Wednesday.
According to police, the girl’s parents had sold the girl for Rs 40,000 and received an advance of Rs 20,000, with the remaining amount to be handed over to them after the wedding.

Superintendent of Police (SP, Bhopal rural), Kiranlata Kerketta said, “We received information from the Women and Child Development Department about a child marriage in Gunaga police station area on Monday (June 26) following which we reached the spot and saw that the ‘haldi’ ceremony was taking place. On inquiry it was found the girl was 12 years old and the person whom she was getting married to was 27 years old.”

The minor told police that her parents had fixed her marriage for Rs 40,000 and they had dimissed her protests, SP Kerketta said.

The officer added that a case was registered against five persons so far, including the parents of the minor girl, the bridegroom and his parents under the Human Trafficking, Juvenile Justice Act, Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, SC/ST Act.

All these accused have been arrested, police said.

Further investigation into the matter is underway, the police official said adding that cases would be lodged against those who worked as brokers or were if they were found to be involved in the case. (ANI)

For A Land Far From Homeland

Growing up in the 1950s Bombay, one frequently heard of a neighbourhood ‘David’ migrating to Israel, to live in the homeland of the Jews.

The next decade saw a proliferation of English coaching classes to improve the language essential to “go phoren”. That continues, it is not difficult to guess, wherever people want to seek a better life in a far-off land, no matter the hardships and uncertainties that means.

My first contact with migrate-come-what-may was with the Gujaratis fighting to enter Britain. British passport holders had fled Idi Amin’s Uganda. Refused entry and unable to return to Kampala, they were in New Delhi, squatting at the British High Commission. Denied even basic facilities, they were shut out once they left the premises, becoming the ‘nowhere’ people. Till London grudgingly accepted them.

Fifteen years later, I met some in downtown London. It was heartening to see them fairly well-settled. Newspaper kiosks were one business and running motels was another. By that time, Patels had become synonymous with motels in America as well. The children from those families went to prestigious universities they could only have read about in an earlier era.

The process of migration from poor and developing nations to industrialised ones, legal or otherwise – more of the latter – has multiplied and proliferated over the decades. All indicators are that it is going to increase, with growing poverty, the global recession, climatic changes, sectarian violence, the emergence of dictatorial and ‘nationalist’ regimes and currently, an unwinnable, but economically debilitating, Ukraine conflict.

The industrialised nations of the West are feeling the pinch of illegal migration. Earlier this month, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, dressed in a bulletproof vest, participated in operations to identify those who cross the English Channel illegally. The European Union’s border and coast guard agency says that the number of attempts by migrants to enter Europe without authorisation reached around 330,000 in 2022. They are from Syria, Afghanistan, Myanmar, and African of various nationalities – dogged by natural calamities and man-made ones like armed conflicts. Even if peaceful, urbanisation, industrialisation and the building of roads have uprooted people who have lived off the land, not required to leave their homes.

Less talked about India’s otherwise win-win engagements with the developed world these days are its illegal migrants and over-stayers. In Britain alone, Indians are now the second largest group of migrants crossing into the UK over the English Channel on risky small boats, according to the UK Home Office. As per the data, 675 Indian nationals entered the country by small boat between January and March, amid a “surge in attempts to evade work visa restrictions”, The Daily Mail has reported.

The migration scene is similar across the Atlantic. I am reminded of two films both, incidentally, bearing the same name, The Illegal. They narrate stories of the young chasing the American ‘dream’ and what it entails. The 2019 film is the Indians’ saga. But let me pen the poignant climax of the1970s film that is difficult to locate on the Internet. It has a Mexican couple with a pregnant wife. The man is struggling at the American Immigration Counter when the lady gets labour pains. She darts bypassing the border police and clutches the American flag and delivers. “My baby is American,” she screams with a mix of pain and satisfaction.

Flash forward to this year when an entire family from Gujarat – a man, his young wife and two children – died in a road accident while illegally being ferried from Canada to the USA. The tragedy occurred during what was, perhaps, the last lap of their travel undertaken over two months, after selling the family’s property back home.

Shahiza Raza, a Pakistani woman field hockey player and 170 others – Afghans, Pakistanis and Iranians – set sail from the Turkish port of Izmir in February and crashed near the Italian coast. Only her body returned to Quetta to her mother and brain-damaged child.

Over the years, we are familiar with “boat people” who travel via Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia having Australia as their dream destination. They are unwanted. The social tensions that ensued made a former prime minister warn: “We are a Christian country.”

For close to 50 years, the Gulf boom has attracted millions of people from across the globe, more than the populations of those Sheikhdoms who have benefitted from the burgeoning oil economies. That region from where many developing countries earn billions as remittances is also getting impacted by geo-political and geo-economic changes like the Ukraine conflict that choked Europe’s energy supplies at one end and on the other, had Russian oil sold at concessional rates. The Gulf boom is bound to be hit and the first impact will be on the workforce.

Pakistani attorney-author Rafia Zakaria writes in Dawn newspaper on the latest boat tragedy on the Mediterranean Sea that had 750 people, 400 of them said to be Pakistanis. She notes that the gradual decline in employment opportunities available in Saudi Arabia and the rest of the Gulf in general, all of which are trying to transition to more locally staffed workforces, are one reason that more and more Pakistanis have been found travelling on migrant boats.

She draws a larger picture for every nation, whether importing or exporting the labour force. Her warning about the foreseeable future cannot be ignored.

“As artificial intelligence and remote work get more integrated into the workforce, developed industrialised democracies in the EU and also the UK and US are going to decline further. In other words, all of these countries are looking at the impending employment crises, particularly in the low-skilled sector.”

She points out: “Already, stores have stopped hiring cashiers and shelf stockers because these jobs have become automated. Soon jobs that do not require much local context information, such as computer programming, data sciences etc, are also going to end up in countries that can provide these services at the lowest cost.

“Developed economies are aware of this and of the fact that low-skilled workers will become redundant first. This is going to require these wealthier countries to institute some sort of benefits such as a universal basic income so that the poor in their countries can survive.”

This transformation is bound to create complexities that make migration increasingly difficult. They have already begun to go beyond the normal protectionism of local economies. They will generate cultural forces such as ever-increasing racism and xenophobia to support these restrictive policies.

Canada Driven By Vote-Bank Politics: Jaishankar On Khalistani Activities

Reacting to the rise in ‘Khalistani’ activities in Canada, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that Ottawa seems to be driven by “vote-bank politics” and this has also impacted the ties between the two countries lately.

He was speaking at a town hall meeting at the India International Centre, here in the national capital.
Speaking to the reporters, Jaishankar said, “How Canada has dealt with the Khalistani issue is a longstanding issue for us, because very frankly, they seem to be driven by vote bank politics. Their responses have been constrained by what they regard as vote bank compulsions. We made it very clear that if there are activities which are permitted from Canada that impinge on our sovereignty, territorial integrity and our security, then we will have to respond”.

“It is something which is a continuing conversation with Canada, not always satisfactory, but something on which we have been very clear. And over the last few years, you can see that this has impacted our ties in many ways,” he added.

Notably, there has been a rise in Khalistan activities in Canada lately.

Earlier this month, a tableau parade was organised in Ontario celebrating the assassination of former PM Indira Gandhi, which drew severe criticism from New Delhi.

In March this year, Khalistan supporters protested outside the Indian Embassy in Canada. They raised pro-Khalistan slogans and allegedly assaulted Indian-origin journalists present on the spot.

Khalistan supporters in March, protested outside the Indian Embassy in Canada. They raised pro-Khalistan slogans and allegedly assaulted Indian-origin journalists present on the spot.

Speaking further, Jaishankar hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to the United States, and added that India is also focussing on concluding the free trade agreements with Europe.

“Today, it is a very polarised world, and the global stage is so much more challenging. Our relations with the United States are exceptionally well. We have had the most productive visit in history,” the EAM said.

He added, “We have moved into a positive domain with the US for shaping the world for common purposes. The attention being given to Europe is remarkable. The big issue before us is concluding the free trade agreement, but we are more hopeful than we have been in past”.

The EAM further added that the India-Russia ties have remained steady despite all the turbulence.

“Our relations with Russia have been kept steady despite all turbulence. We have made our own evaluation over the years regarding the importance of this. It is a mistake to dumb down ties with Russia to just defence dependences. We have an upswing in the economic part of our relations with Russia,” he said. (ANI)

Chandrayaan 3 Testing

Chandrayaan 3 Testing Completed, Will Be Launched In Mid-July: ISRO Chief

Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) S Somanath on Wednesday revealed that Chandrayaan 3 testing is complete and the window of opportunity for the launch is aimed between July 12 and 19.

“Currently the Chandrayaan 3 spacecraft is fully integrated. We have completed the testing and also mated with the rocket compartment… Currently, the window of opportunity for launch is between July 12 and 19 and we will take the earliest possible date, maybe the 12th, maybe the 13th or maybe the 14th. We will announce the exact date after all the tests are completed,” Somanath told ANI here.
The ISRO chief also shared his views on Artemis Accords and believes that it is an opportunity for Indian industries that are working in the space sector to work with the US companies.

“We are looking at Artemis Accord as a political engagement with the US. It is a statement of Intent that when the US is proposing collaborative work in the space sector, especially the exploration of outer planets in a very cordial atmosphere between different nations, we agree with that. So it has a big statement. We would like to work with the US, especially on technologies which are high-end and space is one of them. It will open opportunities for Indian industries who are working in the space sector to work with the US companies that are equally working in the space sector,” he mentioned.

“So the advancement of electronics, new processors, the centre takes place in the US and this access to this new technology to the Indian company is so important for them to innovate and bring up value which will give an opportunity to market them in the US market. This is precisely the objective of the US. So we would like to make sure the Indian companies contribute to the US space program. It’s not a great thing now. So, the earlier the US sees it as an opportunity because Indian companies have the technological strength today, they have cost-effectiveness and they have a lower development cycle time which they want to bank on. So it is the purpose that it is jointly developed this whole accord signing is for the benefit of the US as well as the benefit of India,” he added

Somanath shared an update on Aditya-L1 Mission which is India’s first mission to study the Sun and said ISRO is aiming for August end as the target for its launch. (ANI)

Jaishankar on Veiled Attack On Pakistan

Terror By Night, Trade By Day: Jaishankar In Veiled Attack On Pak

In a veiled attack on Pakistan, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday said that India cannot have SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) meeting until one member continues to engage in acts of terrorism, adding that India will not tolerate a situation where “terrorism happens by night and trade happens by day.”

While responding to the question about not hearing anything on SAARC, Jaishankar at India International Centre said, “You have not heard very much about SAARC because, in the last few years, there isn’t very much to hear about. We have not had meetings because you have a member of SAARC who doesn’t conform to all the basic requirements of what a good membership is, and that is today an obstacle reality for the SAARC to meet. You know I said we cannot continue with acts of terrorism and say the cooperation will continue to happen nevertheless.”
“So, I think there are issues there and it’s time to recognize the seriousness of those issues and not allow terrorism to happen by night and trade by day. I don’t think the country is well served by that,” he added.

Earlier also, Jaishankar had blamed Pakistan for SAARC not being an active organisation. In December 2022, Jaishankar in Varanasi said that the SAARC currently is not active because one member of the SAARC believes that dealing with “neighbours is compatible with the factors of cross-border terrorism.”

Notably, the SAARC is the regional intergovernmental organization of eight countries of South Asia: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

While talking about having good relations with other neighbouring countries but not with Pakistan, Jaishankar said that they can’t have a normal relationship because of cross-border terrorism.

“I would say Pakistan obviously is the exception when it comes to the neighbourhood. Again, it needs very little explanation. The fact is that we cannot allow terrorism to be normalized. We cannot allow that to become the basis for getting us into discussions with Pakistan. So I don’t think to me, it’s a fairly common-sense proposition,” Jaishankar said.

“In fact, if anything, I’m still a little perplexed by why we had not arrived at this position earlier. But we have arrived at it now. And the issue really is that until there is a departure from I would say an abrogation of this policy of cross-border terrorism. Clearly, it is not possible to have a normal relationship with that particular neighbour,” he added. (ANI)

US First-Time Tourist Visa

Wait Time For First-Time Tourist Visa Reduced: US Ambassador

United States Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti, on Wednesday, said that the wait time for first-time tourist visa interviews has been reduced by more than 50 per cent, adding that goal for 2023 is to process at least one million visas.

Speaking at IIT Delhi, Garcetti highlighted the progress made in visa processing, stating that the US Mission in India is currently processing visas faster than ever before.
Addressing the audience at IIT Delhi, Garcetti said, “We’re already doing this. We’re currently processing more visas, faster, than the US Mission in India ever has before. We have set a goal for ourselves to process at least a million visas in 2023, and we’re already more than halfway towards reaching that goal.”

“Our investments have brought real results, and we’ve seen wait times for first-time tourist visa interviews fall by more than 50 per cent,” he added.

To remove barriers that hinder qualified travelers from experiencing the United States, Garcetti emphasized the need to expand operations.

The US Ambassador said that they will continue to invest in expanding the visa operations and broadening the team.

“We’ll find innovative solutions to streamline the visa process, such as reducing the need for in-person interviews, which allows consular teams around the world to assist in processing visas for the growing number of Indian travellers,” the envoy said.

India and US are doing every bit of effort to make the visa process smooth and in that process, recently, during his interaction with the Indian community in the US, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that Indian professionals can renew their work visas without travelling abroad.

“America’s new consulates will be opened in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad. It has now been decided that the H1B visa renewal can be done in the US itself,” PM Modi said while addressing the Indian diaspora at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington DC.

India is going to open a new consulate in Seattle this year. Apart from this, Indian Consulates will be opened in 2 more cities in America.

“Together we are not just forming policies and agreements, we are shaping lives, dreams and destinies,” said PM Modi.

Meanwhile, at the IIT Delhi, Garcetti praised India and said that the country is improving lives and pulling people out of poverty through its transformative technology.

“Our countries (India and US) have so much in common because the Indian dream and the American dream are two sides of the same coin- we share the same vision. Our people want to achieve success for our communities and our families. We embrace possibility, new opportunities, new knowledge, and the chance to make a difference. We want to leave the world better off and more secure than we found it – not just for ourselves and our own countries, but for everyone,” the Ambassador said.

“Our connection is very personal, based on affinity and friendship. We’re linked by a diaspora community more than four million strong. Through educational and business connections, and an appreciation for each other’s cultures, our friendship grows along with our shared experience and shared ambitions,” he added.

Giving examples of its strong relationship with India, Garcetti said that last year one out of every five US student visas issued worldwide went to an Indian student, and over 200,000 Indians are studying in America. (ANI)

Nitin on congress joining

I’d Jump Into A Well Rather Than Join Cong: Gadkari

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Thursday recalled telling a Congress leader that he would jump into a well rather than join their party.

In an interview with ANI Editor Smita Prakash, Gadkari said that when Congress leader Shrikant Jichkar told him that he was the “right man in the wrong party” and proposed that he join their party, the Union Minister said he would rather jump into a well. Gadkari said that the situation may change, and his party may win or lose elections, but he would stick to his convictions.
“He said it, but I modestly answered him that my party, my conviction, and its future may be good or bad, but I will always stick to my conviction. There is no question of leaving my party at any time. May it lose or win many elections, the situation may change, but I would rather jump into a well than join the Congress,” Gadkari said on the ANI podcast.

Gadkari said, “I have good relations with all parties. Once I received a call from Speaker Om Birla that everyone in Parliament was praising me and speaking highly of my work even though I was not even present. I was in Nagpur then and was called to Delhi. When I went, there were 75 people from all parties present. Every one of them thanked me and congratulated me. Then the Speaker of Parliament said that it was the first time in the history of Parliament that a minister was praised equally by all party members. To this I replied that my ideology was clear, I was a Swayam Sevak of the RSS and a Karyakarta of the BJP, and after all this everyone praised me unanimously, which made me happy.”

Gadkari asserted that he has always done work beyond politics and BJP has taught him to do justice to all.

“I make sure that everyone’s work gets done when it’s important. I have always done that even beyond politics. That is what the BJP has taught us: to do justice to all, and that is what makes us strong. Politics and development should not be mixed up. I am a Karyakarta of the BJP, but the government belongs to the people of the country. That is why Prime Minister Modi said, Sabka Saath Sabka Viswas Sabka Prayas,” Gadkari said.

He said road development has been undertaken in all states beyond politics. Gadkari said that Chief Ministers from South or other states where BJP doesn’t have the state government also come to meet him to discuss developmental projects and he has undertaken most of them.

“The works are being undertaken in all states beyond politics. Mamata ji from Bengal recently came to meet me, and we discussed some projects. Chief Ministers and other officials from southern states also come to meet me and I hold meetings with all of them, and discuss projects to be undertaken there. It doesn’t make us look bad. It makes our government look strong,” the Union Minister said.

He said, “Roads go through all states. One state may be governed by Congress another by BJP. That doesn’t mean I should shut down the road development works. Roads are for the people of India. And I’m not just a BJP minister but a minister of the Government of India. And being in service for the country’s people is my primary duty and responsibility. I will work for those who voted us to power. I will also work for those who didn’t give us the mandate and I will also do work for those who criticize us. Everyone’s work should be done. This is Bharatiya Janata Party’s culture and we work based on that.”

The BJP veteran said that in his 9 years in office, he had done what is good for the people without thought of politics.

“I can assure you that in my 9 years in office, I have not mixed political thoughts with governance. The roads of our country are our assets and the people who travel on these roads are our family. They deserve good roads and proper development. That is our duty, and that is what our politics is intended for,” he said.

Gadkari also slammed the opposition for attacking Veer Savarkar and the syllabus revamp. He said that Savarkar was a revolutionary and we cannot forget the sacrifices and work he has done for the nation. “It is not right to deny all that he has done. The party which brought Emergency and kept many revolutionaries locked up in jail does not deserve to comment,” he said.

Gadkari also claimed that the BJP will be sweeping the upcoming legislative elections in states as well as the general elections in 2024.

Gadkari is called the Highwayman of India due to the transformational change he has brought in the country’s infrastructure and connectivity in the last nine years as minister of road transport and highways.

Gadkari comes from the city of Nagpur where he started his political career as a Karyakarta of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad. Gadkari is also credited for being the man behind the first ever expressway (Mumbai-Pune) by bringing new technologies into the country and helping private companies to ensure quality work in creating modern infrastructure.

Gadkari is also a strong advocate of sustainable development and his eco-friendly initiatives in road construction have led to the use of garbage in road construction as a raw material.

Before taking charge as union minister, Gadkari donned several hats in the organisation as well as governance and has served as BJP national president from 2009 to 2013 and PWD Minister from 1995-1999 in Maharashtra. (ANI)
