MEA Pakistan India

We Condemn In Strongest Terms: MEA On Khalistani Posters

In response to recent incidents of several posters inciting violence against Indian diplomats and the diplomatic premises, the Ministry of External Affairs has said that it is “unacceptable” and India condemns them in the strongest terms.

Addressing a regular press briefing on Thursday, the official spokesperson of MEA, Arindam Bagchi said, “You must have seen posters inciting violence against the Indian diplomats. Our sense is that…these posters inciting violence against our diplomats and our diplomatic premises brought are unacceptable and we condemn them in the strongest terms. With respect to Canada, the matter has been strongly taken with the Canadian authorities, both in New Delhi and in Ottawa.”
He said that New Delhi has called on the Canadian government to ensure the safety of Indian diplomats.

“We have called on the government of Canada to take all steps to ensure the safety of our diplomats and security of our diplomatic missions in Canada,” Bagchi said, adding that it is a matter of concern that freedom of expression and speech is once again being misused by the anti-India elements based in Canada.

“It is a matter of concern that freedom of expression and speech is once again being misused by the anti-India elements based in Canada and elsewhere. We continue to press the Canadian side to ensure our diplomats can carry out their normal functions without fear and intimidation,” Bagchi added.

In the past couple of months, three major anti-India incidents involving Khalistani separatists have been reported in Canada.

Calling Canada an “extremely diverse country,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his country will make sure that violence and extremism are pushed back in all its forms.

Trudeau refuted allegations that he is soft on terrorist elements. His statement comes after India summoned Canadian High Commissioner in New Delhi over propaganda material, including posters, containing threats to Indian diplomats being circulated in Canada and has served a demarche to the Justin Trudeau government.

Responding to media queries on reports about comments by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the MEA spokesperson said, “We have seen some comments .. at least the media reports about comments by PM Trudeau but let me make the larger point, that the issue is not about freedom of expression but its misuse for advocating violence for propagating separatism and for legitimising terrorism..and that is what we would like to emphasize.”

He also said that there have been similar situations where these kinds of threats have been given in other countries as well.

Bagchi said, “We have also had instances, situations where these kinds of threats have also taken place, be it the US, Australia, the UK, to name a few. You would have seen External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar himself mention in the context of Prime Minister Trudeau’s comments.”

Quoting External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Bagchi said that “he strongly believes that the country should not pander to vote-bank politics.”

Furthermore, he also spoke on the recent remarks by UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly after posters emerged of a pro-Khalistan rally in London on July 8.

Bagchi said, “We have seen comments by UK Foreign Secretary, as you are aware, we have had problems with the security of our mission in London. We have taken up the issue of this threat against our diplomats with the UK authorities. We have noted these comments by the UK authorities but we will naturally judge them by what happens on the ground in the name of freedom of expression. We should not be giving space to those who advocate violence, propagate separatism or legitimise terrorism.”

“We have noted posters circulated in other countries, also as I mentioned,” Bagchi added.

UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly on Thursday said that any direct attacks on Indian High Commission in London are “completely unacceptable.”

He said the UK has made clear to the High Commissioner of India to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami and the Indian government that the safety of staff at the High Commission is paramount.

“Any direct attacks on the Indian High Commission in London are completely unacceptable. We have made clear to @VDoraiswami and the Government of India that the safety of staff at the High Commission is paramount,” Cleverly said in a tweet.

The rally is being held in the name of Harjit Singh Nijjar aka Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Khalistani terrorist who was killed in a targeted shooting in Canada’s Surrey on June 18. The posters contained threats to the Indian High Commissioner to the UK Vikram Doraiswami and Shashank Vikram, Consul General of India, Birmingham.

British High Commissioner to India Alex Ellis also responded to Cleverly’s tweet and said the UK government attaches importance to the safety of friends and colleagues. (ANI)

Sachin after AICC Meeting

Our Organisation, Min All Will Work Together: Sachin After Meeting At AICC

Congress leader and former Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan Sachin Pilot on Thursday said that the party’s goal is to return to power in the state, adding that party will collectively work together to achieve the objective.

“It was a very meaningful, extensive and important discussion. We discussed all the issues…Our organisation, our leaders, our MLAs, and ministers all will work together and as I have always been saying our goal is to form Congress government again in Rajasthan…”, Sachin Pilot told the media following a party meeting on the upcoming Assembly elections at the AICC headquarters.
During a press briefing, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal said that Congress will fight unitedly, reverse the trend of alternative governments and repeat the Congress government in Rajasthan.

He said, “29 leaders from Rajasthan Congress including the CM and PCC chief participated in this meeting today. All the leaders unanimously decided that Congress can win the Rajasthan elections provided there is unity among Rajasthan Congress. Today, all leaders decided to fight the elections unitedly. On the basis of winning ability, the candidates will be selected. The list of candidates will be announced in the first week of September.”

Furthermore, Venugopal cautioned party members to not discuss internal issues outside the party and said that strict disciplinary action will be taken against those who violate it.

“The party has decided that everyone should follow strict discipline. Any issues are to be discussed within the party, and no one has the freedom to speak about the party’s internal politics outside the party. Strict disciplinary action will be taken against those who violate this”, he added.

Earlier today, Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi met leaders from Rajasthan to assess preparations for assembly polls and bring greater cohesion in the state party unit amid differences between Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and former Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot.

The meeting was attended by Sachin Pilot and several other senior leaders from Rajasthan as the Assembly polls are scheduled to be held later this year.

CM Gehlot joined the meeting through video conferencing.

Congress has been in power in Rajasthan over the past four-and-half-years and the differences between Gehlot and Pilot have made it harder for Congress to get another term in office in the state. Pilot led a revolt against Gehlot in 2020 and subsequently lost his positions as Deputy Chief Minister and state party chief.

The loyalists of the Chief Minister scuttled a meeting of party legislators last year which the AICC had planned for apparent leadership change in the state as Gehlot was to shift to Delhi as party chief.

Gehlot had then decided to continue as Chief Minister. Piot has accused the government of not taking appropriate action over “corruption” allegations faced by the BJP government led by Vasundhara Raje. He carried out Jan Sangarsh Yatra over his demands against the advice of party leadership.

Pilot has also demanded disbanding and reorganising of the Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC), which hit the headlines in the wake of the alleged paper leak case, and compensation to the affected candidates.

Rajasthan is among the five states that will go to assembly elections later this year along with Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Mizoram.

The Congress leadership has already held strategy meetings for the other poll-bound states. (ANI)

India On russia

India Taking Principled Stand On Russia: White House Official

The US National Security Council’s coordinator for Indo-Pacific affairs, Kurt Campbell has said that India’s stance on Russia is “more nuanced” and that there are lot of signs that New Delhi is taking a principled stand on Moscow in the light of the Ukraine conflict.

The US pointperson on Asia in an interview with ANI on Thursday said also said that the China dimension is important to both India and the United States but it is not enough to take the two countries to where they want to go in their relationship.
“I think India’s position on Russia is more nuanced…we see a lot of signs of India taking principled stands. PM Modi has clearly spoken about the devastation and the tragedy of what’s happening to the Ukrainian people…I think Indian friends and colleagues are quite concerned about the war in Ukraine and believe that Russia has conducted this war terribly on many levels…” Campbell said.

The White House official said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has clearly spoken about the tragedy inflicted upon Ukrainians and that PM Modi engaged in a “positive way” with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy in Hiroshima. He noted that PM Modi expressed concerns regarding the war during his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“He (PM Modi) engaged in a very positive way with President Zelenskyy in Hiroshima. He has conveyed directly to President Putin in his face concerns about the war and about the potential use of nuclear weapons and expressed very clear concerns on the part of India directly about such contemplations, ” Campbell said.

He added that the US has been working actively with India to diversify its supply of nuclear equipment.

Campbell said it was important for India to continue its process of diversification and working with countries like the UK, France, Israel and the US. He said that Indian colleagues privately are very concerned regarding the conflict in Ukraine. Since the start of the Ukraine conflict, India has sought to carve a middle path between Moscow and its Western critics and so far largely resisted Western pressure to cut its economic ties with the Kremlin.

“It is also the case that we have been working actively with India to diversify its supply of military equipment, and we took some further steps with the visit of Prime Minister Modi last week. We believe that it will be important for India to continue this process of diversification, working closely with countries like Great Britain, like France, like Israel, like the United States, to make sure that as India develops its arsenal for the 21st century, it does so in a responsible way and indeed, recognizing that much of this work will be done indigenously,” he said.

Campbell pointed out that there is also acknowledgment that one of the things that animates India’s thinking about Russia is a kind of loyalty.

“So, I think privately Indian friends and colleagues are quite concerned about the war in Ukraine and believe that Russia has conducted this war terribly on many levels. At the same time, there is also acknowledgment that one of the things that animates India’s thinking about Russia is a kind of loyalty and that on its face, I think we can recognize and even understand. At the same time, we’ve seen India increasingly taking steps that sends a clear message that its sense of how this situation should be resolved is quite different from the leaders in Moscow group,” the US official said.

Responding to a question on bipartisan consensus favouring closer ties between New Delhi and Washington as a strategic counterpoint to Beijing, the Deputy Assistant to President Joe Biden who helps in designing the US response to China-related challenges told ANI that that the connections between the two nations are deeper and more fundamental.

Stating that China dimension is important to India and US, Campbell noted that it is not enough to take the two nations where they want to go in terms of their relationship.

“I would say the opening to India began decades ago under President Clinton and then was fortified by President Bush. So, the animating instincts of being closer partners pre-dates this period of greater competition between the United States and China. It is also the case that for a variety of reasons, the diaspora communities in the United States, increasing educational connectivity, issues related with technology, the connections between the United States and India are deeper, more fundamental than they ever have been,” he said.

“And so, while, yes, the China dimension is important to both our countries, it is not enough to take us to where we want to go in this relationship. And there are many other elements that have driven us forward. I think most of those were on full display when Prime Minister Modi visited,” Campbell, the White House pointperson for Asia told ANI.

PM Modi was on a State visit to the US from June 21-25 on the invivation of President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden during which he gave an address to members of the US Congress, and held interactions with some of Silicon Valley’s top CEOs as well as the Indian diaspora.

Last month, US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin said that the world witnesses “bullying and coercion” from Beijing. After his meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Delhi, Austin said, “We face a rapidly changing world. We see bullying and coercion from China, Russian aggression against Ukraine that seeks to redraw borders by force and threatens national sovereignty as well as transnational challenges such as terrorism and climate change,” the top US official said. Pawar NCP Meet

Pawar Leaves For Delhi To Attend NCP National Executive Meet

Amid Maharashtra political crisis, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Sharad Pawar on Thursday left for Delhi where he has called a National Executive meeting.

Meanwhile, posters saying “In the fight of truth and lie, the entire country is with Sharad Pawar” and “India’s history is such that it has never forgiven those who have betrayed” come up outside NCP chief Sharad Pawar’s residence in Delhi.

However, later it was removed by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC).

With the NCP witnessing the unravelling of the party, the Pawar family feud played out on stage on Wednesday as NCP factions headed by Sharad Pawar and his nephew held rival meetings at Yashwantrao Chavan Centre in south Mumbai and in Bhujbal Knowledge City in suburban Bandra, respectively.

While sources revealed that Election Commission has received a petition from Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar staking claim to Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the party symbol.

The sources said the Election Commission has also received a caveat from Jayant Patil, who is with the Sharad Pawar group. He also informed the panel that they have initiated a disqualification process against nine MLAs who joined the Eknath Shinde-BJP government in the state on Sunday.

The politics of Maharashtra is on the boil since Sunday as senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar took oath as the deputy chief minister of the state. Ajit Pawar joined the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government with 8 other MLAs and has claimed control over the Nationalist Congress Party.

On Wednesday, Ajit Pawar took a veiled dig at his uncle Sharad Pawar regarding his age that left the NCP Supremo’s party members and loyalists fuming and resulted into a chain of reactions.

Ajit Pawar urged Sharad Pawar to step down and give a chance to the new generation stating that even leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) retire at the age of 75.

The junior Pawar also has blamed the 82-year-old Sharad Pawar for NCP losing out on the chance to have a chief minister of Maharashtra despite having the support of a majority of MLAs in the year 2014.

“You portrayed me as a villain in front of everyone. I still have deep respect for him (Sharad Pawar)…But you tell me, IAS officers retire at 60…even in politics – BJP leaders retire at 75. You can see the example of LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi…That allows the new generation to rise…”

“You (Sharad Pawar) give us your blessings…The other day, he went to YB Chavan memorial…I have also been there…but you are 83, aren’t you going to stop?…Give us your blessings and we will pray that you live a long life,” said the Deputy chief minister while addressing party legislators and other workers in Bandra here.

Later in the day, NCP’s working president Supriya Sule in a stern response asked the deputy CM not to disrespect her father. “Disrespect us, but not our father (Sharad Pawar). This fight is against the Bharatiya Janata Party government. BJP is the most corrupt party in the country,” said Sule in Mumbai on Wednesday.

“I saw 2019 elections, this 84-year-old man fought and won, age is just a number,” Sule said further.

Meanwhile, Anil Deshmukh, NCP leader and a loyalist Sharad Pawar also came for rescue and ended up calling his party chief a “Lion” and said, “82 saal ka sher abhi bhi zinda hai,” (82-year-old Lion is still alive). (ANI)
