BRICS 2023: Modi Pictured Having Brief Conversation With Xi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was spotted having a brief exchange of words with Chinese Premier Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the 15th BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) leaders’ press conference on Thursday.

Before the conference started in earnest, PM Modi and Xi were pictured having a brief conversation before taking their designated seats.

Notably, in November 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chanced upon Xi at the G20 dinner hosted by Indonesian President Joko Widodo in Bali, Indonesia.

Both the leaders exchanged pleasantries at the G20 dinner. Notably, this was the first handshake since the standoff between China’s Peoples Liberation Army and the Indian forces in eastern Ladakh in April 2020.

India and China have been in a stand-off situation for the last three years and relations at all levels have deteriorated due to tensions on the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The two sides have held 19 rounds of talks so far to address the boundary issues in eastern Ladakh since 2020, post the Chinese aggression there.

PM Modi arrived in South Africa for the 15th BRICS Summit on Tuesday.

The opening day of the summit in Johannesburg was witness to the BRICS Business Forum Leaders’ Dialogue.

In his address at the BRICS Business Forum Leaders’ Dialogue, PM Modi said India will soon be a 5 trillion dollar economy and in the coming years will be the growth engine of the world.

PM Modi’s special message to the dialogue was that mutual trust and transparency can help create a big impact, especially in the Global South. This is the first in-person BRICS Summit after three consecutive years of virtual meetings owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Later on, on the second day, at the open plenary session of the 15th BRICS Summit, PM Modi said India had given a lot of importance to the countries of Global South under its G20 Presidency and lauded South Africa for the initiative as the chair of the BRICS summit.

“We welcome the move to give special importance to the countries of the Global South in BRICS under the chairmanship of South Africa. This is not just the aspiration, but also the need of the present times. India has also given importance to this subject under its G20 presidency. One Earth One Family One Future – we are trying to move forward with all countries on this mantra. In the Voice of Global South summit in January this year, 125 countries participated and shared their concerns and priorities,” he said. (ANI)

United States former President Donald Trump

Trump Skips GOP Debate, Says People There ‘Shouldn’t Be Running For President’

United States former President Donald Trump, on Wednesday (local time), skipped Republicans’s first 2024 presidential primary debate and questioned what he would be doing there, sitting for 2 hours and getting harassed by people “that shouldn’t be running for President?”

Trump skipped the first GOP debate and instead opted for an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

Responding to a question on why he skipped the GOP debate, Trump said, “You know a lot of people have been asking me that and many people said you shouldn’t do that. But you see, the polls have come out and I am leading by 50 and 60 points. And you know some of them are at one and zero and two… do I need to sit there for an hour or 2 hours, whatever it’s going to be and get harassed by people that shouldn’t be running for President? Should I be doing that?”

“And a network that isn’t particularly friendly to me, frankly you know they were backing Ron Desanctimonious like crazy and now they have given up on him. I mean, it’s a lost cause and it reminded me very much of 2016,” he added.

The US’ former President recalled the 2016 election and said that he went through the same experience then and had to fight them all the way. He further stated that it would be more appropriate not to do the debate.

“I don’t think it’s right to do if you are leading by 50 or 60. I have one poll leading by 70 points and I am saying why am I doing it? And I am going to have 8-10 people, whoever made the debate, I don’t know how many it is but I am going to have all these people screaming at me, shouting questions at me, all of which I love answering, I love doing but it doesn’t make sense to do them So I have taken a pass, as you probably noticed,” Trump said in an interview with Carlson.

Meanwhile, at the GOP debate conducted by Fox News, Vivek Ramaswamy, Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Tim Scott, Mike Pence, Doug Burgum, Chris Christie and Asa Hutchinson were present.

Indian-American Vivek Ramaswamy, termed the US support for Ukraine, amid the conflict with Russia, as “disastrous” saying that if he is elected President, he would not support an increase in aid to the battle-scarred country, reported CNN.

He added that the resources going to Kyiv should be used domestically, instead.

Notably, 7 of the 8 GOP candidates raised their hands in affirmation to a question from the moderator, Brett Baier of Fox News where he asked if the candidates would support Trump as a presidential candidate even if he is convicted. Asa Hutchinson was the only candidate who did not raise his hand in affirmation.

The interview of Donald Trump with Tucker Carlson has garnered nearly 96 Million views on social media platform X (formerly called Twitter) till now. (ANI)

India Has Moved From Red Tape To Red Carpet: Modi At G20

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said India has moved from “red tape” to “red carpet” and has enabled unfettered Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows in the last nine years.

In a virtual address to the G20 Trade and Investment ministerial meeting on Thursday, PM Modi called on the G20 member countries to “build a resilient” and “inclusive global value chain that can withstand future shocks”.

“We have moved away from red tape to red carpet and liberalised Foreign Direct Investment flows. Initiatives like ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ have given a boost to manufacturing. Above all, we have brought policy stability. We are committed to making India the third-largest global economy in the next few years,” PM Modi said.

He added that the current global challenges — from the pandemic to the “geopolitical tensions” — have “tested” the World economy at G20.

Extending a warm welcome to the attendees at Jaipur, PM Modi said the city is characterised by its dynamic and enterprising people.

“Throughout history, trade has led to an exchange of ideas, cultures and technology. It has brought people closer,” PM Modi added.

He said trade and globalisation have also lifted hundreds of millions out of extreme poverty. “Today we see global optimism and confidence in the Indian economy. India is seen as a combination of openness, opportunities and options,” PM Modi said in his virtual address.

He added that India has become the fifth-largest global economy over the last nine years of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre.

“This is the result of our sustained efforts. We embarked on the journey of reform, performance and transformation in 2014. We have increased competitiveness and enhanced transparency,” he added.

“We have expanded digitisation and promoted innovation. We have established dedicated fit corridors and built industrial zones,” PM Modi added.

He also called on G20 delegates to rebuild confidence in international trade and investment. “We must build resilient and inclusive global value chains that can withstand future shocks. In this context, India’s proposal to create a generic framework for mapping global value chains is important,” PM Modi said.

This framework aims to assess vulnerabilities, minimise risks and enhance resilience, he added.

Concluding his address, PM Modi said, “Technologies’ transformative power in trade is undeniable. India’s shift to an online single direct tax, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) helps create a single internal market boosting inter-state trade.” (ANI)

Shah To Visit Poll-Bound Telangana On August 27

BJP has stepped up its efforts in poll-bound Telangana with Union Home Minister Amit Shah slated to address a public meeting in Khammam on August 27.

BJP sources said lakhs of people are expected to attend Shah’s rally which will also give a boost to the party campaign in the state which will go to the polls later this year.

Shah was earlier scheduled to address the rally in June but it was postponed due to Cyclone Biparjoy.

During his visit to the state, Amit Shah will also meet senior party leaders to assess the party’s poll preparations.

Sources said he will take stock of ground reports and discuss the party’s plans and programmes regarding the assembly polls.

BJP leaders said there is “anti-incumbency” against the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government in Telangana.

“All sections including employees, students and farmers are angry with the government.  People of Telangana are now looking at BJP and for a double-engine government to realise their aspirations and redeem Telangana from clutches of corruption and dynasty,” a party leader said.

“The BJP will stand by the people of Telangana and ensure that their aspirations and dreams are realised,” he added.

The ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi has announced most of its candidates for the assembly elections.  The polls will witness a triangular contest between BRS, Congress and BJP. (ANI)

This is not only a moment of national pride for our Indian friends but also an important milestone in the advancement of space science and technology, which ultimately contributes to making our lives better. @DrSJaishankar @ISRO” FM Saud wrote on “X” formerly known as Twitter.

It was a giant leap for India on Wednesday evening as the Chandrayaan-3 lander module successfully landed on the moon’s South Pole, making it the first country to have achieved the historic feat and bringing to an end the disappointment over the crash landing of the Chandrayaan-2, four years ago.

Officials at India’s space agency ISRO headquarters in Bengaluru broke into applause after the Vikram began its powered vertical descent towards its landing site.

“India is on the moon!” Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is currently attending the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg said. He watched the live telecast and as soon as the touchdown happened he sported a big smile and waved the tricolour.

The countdown of the Vikram hovered at 150 metres, then 130 metres, and 50 metres and decelerated as approached the moon’s service before finally touching down on the lunar surface.

As the Vikram lander carrying the Pragyaan rover in its belly touched down on the lunar surface, it marked a giant leap in India’s spacefaring journey providing a well-deserved finale to ISRO’s long years of toil.

This makes India the fourth country – after the US, China, and Russia – to have successfully landed on the moon’s surface, it has earned a place in record books as the first to touchdown on the south side of Earth’s only natural satellite.

Billions of people across India and globally closely monitoring the much-awaited event. More so after Russia’s Luna-25 spacecraft crashed on Sunday after spinning out of control.

In the run-up to the scheduled soft landing of Chandrayaan-3, people across the country prayed to God in all denominations of places of worship for a successful mission.

Special screenings of the soft landing were organized across the country, including schools science centres, and public institutions. ISRO made the live actions available on the ISRO website, its YouTube channel, Facebook, and public broadcaster DD National TV.

The scheduled timing for the soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the moon’s south pole on August 23, 2023 (Wednesday), was 18:04 IST, with the powered descent of Vikram lander at 1745 IST.

ISRO had been releasing a series of up-close images of the moon, assisting the lander module in determining its position (latitude and longitude) by matching them against an onboard moon reference map.

Historically, spacecraft missions to the Moon have primarily targeted the equatorial region due to its favourable terrain and operating conditions. However, the lunar south pole presents a vastly different and more challenging terrain compared to the equatorial region

The spacecraft was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Andhra Pradesh’s Sriharikota on July 14.

A GSLV Mark 3 (LVM 3) heavy-lift launch vehicle was used for the launch of the spacecraft that was placed in the lunar orbit on August 5 and since then it was through a series of orbital manoeuvres been lowered closer to the moon’s surface.

Ever since the July 14 launch, ISRO had been maintaining that the health of the spacecraft remained “normal”.

On August 5, Chandrayaan-3 was successfully inserted into the lunar orbit with multiple key manoeuvres thereafter.

Then on August 17, the mission marked another giant leap in its lunar quest as the ‘Vikram’ lander module of the spacecraft successfully separated from the propulsion module on Thursday. The Chandrayaan-3 mission’s lander is named after Vikram Sarabhai (1919–1971), who is widely regarded as the father of the Indian space programme.

Then the deboosting of the Lander module was undertaken in two phases. Deboosting is the process of slowing down to position itself in an orbit where the orbit’s closest point to the Moon is.

The stated objectives of Chandrayaan-3, India’s third lunar mission, were a safe and soft landing on the lunar surface, the rover moving on the moon’s surface, and in-situ scientific experiments.

Upon landing, the lander and the rover were to operate for one lunar day. One day on the Moon is equal to 14 days on Earth.

Chandrayaan-3’s development phase commenced in January 2020, with the launch planned sometime in 2021.

However, the Covid-19 pandemic brought an unforeseen delay to the mission’s progress. The approved cost of Chandrayaan-3 is Rs 250 crores (excluding launch vehicle cost).

Chandrayaan-2 mission was only “partially successful” since the lander lost contact after a hard landing, but the ISRO earlier this week successfully established two-way communication between the Chandrayaan-3 lander module and the still orbiting Chandrayaan-2 orbiter.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) founder Vikram Sarabhai, who is considered the father of the Indian space program, once said India must be second to none in the application of advanced technologies to the real problems facing society.

The establishment of the ISRO was one of Vikram Sarabhai’s greatest achievements. He successfully convinced the government of the day of the importance of a space programme for a developing country like India. (ANI)
