Modi Condoles Death Of MS Swaminathan

India has lost a visionary leader in the field of agriculture, as  MS Swaminathan, renowned for his pioneering role in India’s “Green Revolution,” passed away in Chennai on September 28, at the age of 98.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of MS Swaminathan recalling his interactions with the agirculture scientist.

“Deeply saddened by the demise of Dr. MS Swaminathan Ji. At a very critical period in our nation’s history, his groundbreaking work in agriculture transformed the lives of millions and ensured food security for our nation” the Prime Minister said in a post on X.

“Beyond his revolutionary contributions to agriculture, Dr. Swaminathan was a powerhouse of innovation and a nurturing mentor to many. His unwavering commitment to research and mentorship has left an indelible mark on countless scientists and innovators” the Prime Minister added.

“I will always cherish my conversations with Dr. Swaminathan. His passion to see India progress was exemplary.

His life and work will inspire generations to come. Condolences to his family and admirers” the Prime Minister further said.

Born on August 7, 1925, in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan, fondly known as MS Swaminathan, leaves behind a legacy that has forever altered the landscape of Indian agriculture and global food security.

Swaminathan’s lifelong journey into the world of agriculture and genetics was profoundly influenced by a pivotal moment during the Bengal famine of 1943, which witnessed the loss of countless lives due to the acute shortage of rice.

This humanitarian crisis deeply moved the young Swaminathan, igniting his passion for agricultural research and his commitment to ending hunger.

His personal motivation led him to pursue education at prestigious institutions such as the Madras Agricultural College and the Indian Agricultural Research Institute.

Armed with knowledge and unwavering dedication, Swaminathan embarked on a mission to develop high-yielding varieties of wheat and rice, capable of thriving in India’s diverse agricultural conditions.

His ground-breaking work paved the way for what would become the “Green Revolution” in India—an agricultural transformation that significantly increased crop yields and ensured food security for millions.

Swaminathan’s leadership and vision played a pivotal role in making India self-sufficient in wheat and rice production.

Swaminathan’s impact extended far beyond India’s borders. He served as the Director General of the International Rice Research Institute and later as the President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.

His tireless commitment to addressing global agricultural and environmental challenges earned him a place among the “Time 20,” Time magazine’s list of the most influential Asians of the 20th century.

A passionate advocate for sustainable agriculture, Swaminathan championed eco-friendly farming practices and emphasized the responsible use of resources. He envisioned an “evergreen revolution,” which focused on preserving biodiversity while ensuring food security.

His forward-thinking approach continues to inspire contemporary efforts aimed at protecting our planet and fostering a prosperous future.

In his pursuit of eradicating hunger and poverty, Swaminathan established the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation—an institution dedicated to empowering farmers with knowledge and innovative farming techniques.

This foundation stands as a beacon of hope, carrying forward his noble mission.

Swaminathan’s contributions earned him numerous awards and honours, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership, the Albert Einstein World Science Award, and the prestigious First World Food Prize.

He was also the recipient of Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan, among many other accolades. His vast knowledge and leadership earned him fellowships in prestigious scientific academies around the world, including the Royal Society of London and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.

In collaboration with Dr Norman Borlaug, MS Swaminathan was instrumental in averting famine conditions in India and Pakistan in the 1960s.

Their innovative work in genetic research and plant breeding revolutionized agriculture and improved food security on a global scale. Their dedication to addressing food insecurity and poverty has left an indelible mark on history.

MS Swaminathan’s passing is a profound loss, but his contributions to humanity will endure as a source of inspiration and hope. (ANI)

Mahsa Amini – An Idea That Refuses To Die

To have a whole life, one must have the possibility of publicly shaping and expressing private worlds, dreams, thoughts and desires, of constantly having access to a dialogue between the public and private worlds. How else do we know that we have existed, felt, desired, hated, feared?
Reading Lolita in Tehran
by Azar Nafisi

A young Kurd woman holding on to her dreams, thoughts, desires, aspirations. She is walking in a public space wearing a hijab, in Tehran, with her brother. The nasty Moral Police of Iran takes her into custody. Why? She is wearing the hijab “inappropriately”, they claimed. They beat her up so badly that she died.

Her name was Mahsa Amini. In a few days, and for a long time after that, and one year after her murder, she remains an iconic symbol of liberation not only in Iran, but all over the world. In her funeral, women mourners threw their veils into a deathly sky and cried in chorus. It has been ritualistic for women to get beaten up on the streets by the Moral Police.

It has become routine. The degradation and humiliation of women, even school girls. No wonder, girls in schools joined the protest movement like a moonshine tide in an ocean, and along with them joined boys, and men, and the elderly. This was a like a classical painting being made in the midst of raging storm, a cathartic opera in a graveyard, a sublime symphony floating on traffic crossings, reaching a crescendo each moment the women hit the streets.

Women burnt their hijabs as a public spectacle. They cut their hair in public squares as a valiant expression of defiance. They danced and sang around bonfires, holding hands with men and women, even as the armed security forces loomed in, ready to assault and kill.

“Don’t look at us! Why do you want to look at us?” they said. “Go, look somewhere else.”

More than 500 citizens, mostly women, have been killed in the last one year of protests, and 20,000 dissenters are rotting in prison. The hijab has become a death-veil of absolute, totalitarian, orthodox oppression.

On her death anniversary, the security forces warned Mahsa Amini’s father not to  pay her tribute on this day. “Security forces detained Amjad Amini and returned him to his house after threatening him against marking his daughter’s death anniversary,” the Kurdistan Human Rights Network said. Amini’s parents said that they would hold a “traditional and religious anniversary ceremony” at their daughter’s grave despite government warnings, even while heavy security was posted in her home town of Saqqez in Iran’s western province of Kurdistan, and other towns and cities.

And, yet, several towns woke up in the morning to see defiant graffiti on their walls. The writing on the wall reminded of the magical May, 1968 slogan in Sorbonne during the great students’ and workers’ uprising in France: ‘Give Flowers to the Rebels who Failed’!

In other vantage points, flash mobs and spontaneous tributes were organized, hijabs and hair flying in the air. The same old song was sung in chorus which put the singer in prison and became a global hit in no time. Many women continue to refuse to wear the hijab in public spaces despite the fear of death and prison. Iran has not forgotten its wounds. They are still simmering like a volcano suppressed.

Mitra Hejazipour, one of the top chess players in Iran, had defied this anti-woman regime by removing her scarf in an international tournament. She was expelled from her team. Now, she lives in exile in France. Since then, as a French citizen, she has become a successful chess player here wining the French chess championships, while she is part of a team which has scored the third top spot in the world championships.

She told AFP on the first anniversary of Amini’s death that she cannot take her mind off from what is happening in her homeland, even as she finds herself caught between hope that protesters could actually achieve a breakthrough, and the constant fear of repression against them. “There are many reasons for people to push and protest against this regime, even if it costs them their lives or they are imprisoned,” she said. “I see the courage. I see that, in fact, they are suffocating. It’s about to explode. People don’t think too much about the consequences.”

Meanwhile, The Guardian of London spoke to 15 campaigners from Iran who have been systematically targeted in Germany, Sweden, France, Spain, Switzerland and UK. They were warned by the local police that there are threats to their life, even on European territory. They have been under surveillance, tracked, profiled and followed. Their accounts have been hacked, and thousands of death threats have been given to them, the newspaper reported.

“Two activists in different countries have had their car tyres slashed in the last year, which they suspect was done by Iranian agents. Several report having been followed home from meetings by suspicious men. …Among those targeted are Maryam Banihashemi, the face of the Iranian women’s movement in Switzerland, where she has lived since 2016. She has grown used to receiving death threats on social media after publicly calling for regime change in Iran. She believes she has been followed home after attending political events, twice in Zurich and again after a meeting with a Swiss MP in Parliament in Berne.”

The Guardian reported that Shadi Amin, an Iranian LGBTQ activist in Germany, was warned by the security services that she was under threat from hackers and agents. “The police came to her house to check the locks and bolts on the door, and spent weeks inspecting her digital devices, which she was later advised not to use due to the threat from Iran’s hackers. Last month, Germany’s domestic intelligence agency issued a public warning about ‘concrete spying attempts’ by an Iran-linked hacker group, Charming Kitten.”

Meanwhile, the flourishing industry of hate speech and hate politics, brazenly patronized by the Neo-Nazis in India, continued to spread its deadly fangs of venom, including inside Parliament. It takes the BJP 15 days to find out through a show-cause notice, what its eminent MP from South Delhi shouted inside the house, in the most vile and vicious language, for the world to hear.

ALSO READ: Women Wrestlers Grappling For Justice

It’s like the party is still looking the other way when it comes to a bahubali from UP who has been accused – with evidence – by several women wresters, including our world champion women wrestlers, who led a protracted, peaceful struggle for justice and who were beaten up brutally by the police on the streets of Delhi. That is, will the eminent MP meet the same illustrious fate, as the accused — Brij Bhushan Singh? Indeed, anything can happen during these ‘acche din’ whereby rapists, mass-murderers and mob-lynchers are garlanded and felicitated!

Remember the golden, spiritual discourse of Sadhvi Pragya, honourable BJP MP from Bhopal, earlier accused of violent terrorism and murder? Or, other miscellaneous stalwarts of the Sangh Parivar spewing vicious venom on the Muslims — here, there and everywhere? If this is not a Neo-Nazi narrative unleashed, what is it?

Meanwhile, in yet another hate crime directed against the Muslim community, a differently-abled young man was lynched to death, tied to an electric pole, his body wrapped in many shades of saffron by a mad mob of murderers. And this happened not in the remote hinterland of the Hindi heartland — it happened right inside Northeast Delhi, where the cops are controlled by the Union home ministry.

His crime? He was accused of stealing ‘prasad’ from a stall near a local temple.

Meanwhile, a Dalit girl in Ujjain district was raped and left on the streets, according to reports. Almost naked, in rags, bleeding profusely, she knocked on one door after another. No one gave her even a glass of water. Until a young Samaritan gave her shelter, clothes and food.

These two predictable incidents tell two stories. One, some things just refuse to change in this ‘new India’ where every door of a home opens into portraits of Gods and Goddesses. And, second, when it comes to Muslims and Dalits, justice is as far away as a full moon on a dark, diabolical night.

Rail Roko Protest

Rail-Roko Protest: 18 Trains Of Firozpur Division Hit

As many as 18 trains of the Firozpur division, have been affected as members of various farmers’ bodies squatted on train tracks here on Thursday as part of the three-day ‘Rail-Roko’ agitation.

Several farmer bodies led by the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee are on a three-day ‘rail blockade’, which began today, with several demands including a financial package for losses caused by recent floods, a legal guarantee to minimum support price (MSP) and debt waiver.

A railway official of the Firozpur (FZR) division said that the services of as many as 18 trains have been hit till now on the first day of the rail blockade agitation. “Of those, 12 trains, which set off from and arrive here have been cancelled and the remaining, long route trains, have been diverted,” he said.

Dilbag Singh, one of the protestors, said that the call for the three-day-long agitation was given a month earlier and that the government should provide an immediate solution to their demands.

“This (Rail Roko protest) which is going on, was called a month earlier. We want the government to hold talks and provide solutions to our demands,” he said.

The agitating farmers are also demanding action against Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni’s son Ashish Mishra, the main accused in the Lakhimpur Kheri incident of 2021, which killed four farmers.

Earlier in the day, Sarwan Singh Pandher of Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, who was present at the Amritsar protest said, “If anyone tries to be unfair with the farmers of Punjab, then farmers from Haryana will also join Punjab farmers. Farmers are united throughout the country.”

Pandher further said that at “Devi Dasspura thousands of farmers have gathered in their tractors and bikes to hold an agitation demanding compensation over losses considering the floods in north India which have affected the crops.”

“The agitation has been called by 18 unions in North India. Home Minister Amit Shah came to Amritsar and he promised to bring MSP guarantee law but the committee has not been formed yet. The cases that had been registered during the Delhi agitation have not been withdrawn,” Pandher said.

“The farmers who lost their lives, and their families have not got the compensation and jobs which was assured. The victims have not got justice in the Lakhimpur Kheri incident. We have demanded 50,000 crore as compensation for the floods. The drugs that are being supplied through drones are not being checked at the borders. The protest is against the central government,” he added.

Police official Balvir S Ghuman said that massive security has been deployed to deal with the situation. (ANI)

Justin Trudeau

Trudeau Apologises On Behalf Of Canadian Parliament For Honouring Nazi Veteran

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau apologised on behalf of the Canadian Parliament for honouring a Nazi veteran during an event last week, however, refused to accept the blame personally.

The Opposition has come guns blazing at PM Trudeau over the incident, demanding him to apologise, and calling it a huge embarrassment for the country.

On September 22, during Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskyy’s speech in Canada’s Parliament, 98-year-old Ukrainian Yaroslav Hunka, who served in the first Ukrainian division, also known as the SS division “Galicia” during World War II was honoured by the Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada Anthony Rota.

“This was a mistake that has deeply embarrassed Parliament and Canada. All of us who were in this House on Friday regret deeply having stood and clapped even though we did so unaware of the context,” CBC News quoted Trudeau as saying in a brief statement to reporters.

He also said that the Speaker was “solely responsible” for the invitation and recognition of this man, and “he wholly accepted that responsibility and stepped down”.

“It was a horrendous violation of the memory of the millions of people who died in the Holocaust,” he said, adding the celebration of ex-soldier Yaroslav Hunka was “deeply, deeply painful” to Jewish people, Poles, Roma, the LGBT community and other racialized people in particular — some of the groups that were targeted by the Nazi regime in the Second World War.

Trudeau also said that “Canada is deeply sorry” for involving Zelenskyy, who was pictured applauding Hunka — an image that has been exploited by Russian propagandists, CBC News reported.

Canada has sent an apology to Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian delegation through diplomatic channels, Trudeau added.

CBC News reported citing Liberal caucus sources that Trudeau has told MPs on Wednesday to avoid speaking to the press about Hunka’s invitation and the subsequent fallout, and that the media frenzy would die down if they stayed tight-lipped.

Meanwhile, Canada’s opposition leader, Pierre Poilevre, has lashed out at the Trudeau government, asking if the country has seen a bigger “diplomatic embarrassment” in history.

“The success of diplomatic visits is the personal responsibility of the Prime Minister of Canada: Justin Trudeau. Instead, we have an unprecedented global embarrassment for our country under his watch. What a disgrace,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

He had earlier called the incident the “greatest diplomatic embarrassment” in the country’s history.

“Has there ever been a greater diplomatic embarrassment in the history of our country?” he asked

Earlier on Tuesday, Anthony Rota resigned as the Speaker of the Canadian House of Commons on Tuesday amid building pressure over the controversy, Canada-based Global News reported.

Rota announced his resignation in the House of Commons Tuesday afternoon. His resignation takes effect at the end of business day Wednesday, he added.

“I must step down as your Speaker,” he said, adding, “I reiterate my profound regret.” (ANI)

India Amongst Most Important Voices, Champion Of Global South: Gates Foundation Top Official

Lauding India’s support for emerging economies in the Southern hemisphere and terming it as one of the most important voice and champions of the global south, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation CEO Mark Suzman has said that the foundation sees India’s ability to be a “global leader.”

In an exclusive interview with ANI, Suzman said that models developed in India can accelerate progress globally, especially in the Global South.

“India is clearly one of the most important voices and champions of the Global South. And that’s why it’s a country that we (Gates Foundation) in addition to the strong partnerships we’ve developed over the 20 years, we worked in India, to help drive better health and development outcomes in India. We now see India’s ability to be a global leader in helping rollout and share some of its lessons and best practices in health in digital financial inclusion in agriculture. And that’s something we’re excited to be working on and building on in the years to come,“ Suzman told ANI.

Moreover, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in New York hosted several leaders of the Global South at a special event ‘India-UN for Global South’, highlighting how India is trying to strike a balance in the international system.

Earlier this month the African Union was granted permanent member status in the Group of 20 (G20) top world economies.

Global South is used to refer to developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, while economically developed countries such as the United States, Canada, Europe, Russia, Australia and New Zealand constitute Global North. The African continent is home to about 17 per cent of the world’s population. However, until September this year South Africa had been the only G20 member.

Suzman hailed the G20 grouping for reaching the “groundbreaking” consensus on the role of digital public infrastructure as a critical accelerator of the Sustainable Development Goals, especially in the global south.

“There is a strong opportunity right now, to use that Global South framework in specific areas. We’re particularly focused in areas like health and financial inclusion that focus on the poorest and most vulnerable and we’re certainly looking forward to working with the Government of India to help roll those out in the years to come,” CEO further added.

Suzman’s comments came at the annual “Goalkeepers” conference in New York that was largely focused on improving maternal and newborn health in low-income countries. The foundation’s top offcial also recognized India’s job of prioritizing maternal and child health by Public and private partnerships that have accelerated progress.

“We work very closely with the states particularly of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, which traditionally have had some of the most challenging statistics in terms of maternal and child mortality outcomes, but have recently seen significant progress.”

The foundation also celebrated “goalkeepers”—individuals who are working across the world to address sustainable development goals.

The event was filled with stories of individuals and organizations and their on-the-ground successes, from Yetunde Ayo Oyalowo, a doctor in Lagos, Nigeria who founded a program that sets up mobile clinics in markets and hard-to-reach communities to, Eva Nangalo, a midwife in Uganda. (ANI)

In an early morning operation on Thursday, a team of Punjab Police reached Khaira’s residence and conducted a raid in connection with an old case registered in 2015 under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in Jalalabad, Fazilka.

Khaira was hosting a Facebook Live where he can be seeing arguing with police personnel as they raided his house this morning. A police official can be seen in the video telling Khaira that a SIT has been formed in an old drug smuggling case.

In the video, Khaira is also seen raising slogans of “Punjab Sarkar murdabad” as the police personnel detain him.

Sukhpal Khaira is an MLA from Bholath in Kapurthala of Punjab and Chairman of All India Kisan Congress.

Leader of the Congress party in the Punjab assembly and senior leader Partap Singh Bajwa questioned the detention of Khaira saying that the AAP government in Punjab had resorted to low level vendetta politics.

“The arrest of Senior Congress Leader and Bolath MLA @SukhpalKhaira is extremely deplorable. The @AAPPunjab

govt has stooped to an all-time low and resorted to vendetta politics. Sukhpal Singh Khaira has been outspoken and raised his voice against the wrongdoings and irregularities committed by the CM @BhagwantMann’s govt.  The Punjab Congress under the ambit of law will leave no stone unturned to get him released” Partap Singh Bajwa said in a post on X.

In a show of support arch rivals of Congress in the state the Shiromani Akali Dal criticised the Punjab government for its high handed action.

In a post on X the Akali Dal said “Political differences aside- Shiromani Akali Dal Amritsar condemns the arrest borne out of the witch hunt and political vendetta against Bholath MLA and a very respected @SukhpalKhaira Ji a fierce critic of @BhagwantMann and @AAPPunjab led @PunjabGovtIndia. Cong Punjab Chief Condemns khaira’s Detention

Condemning the detention of Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira, Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Thursday termed the action taken by Punjab Police as a “jungle raj”.

In an early morning operation on Thursday, a team of Punjab Police reached Khaira’s residence and conducted a raid in connection with an old case registered in 2015 under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in Jalalabad, Fazilka.

“I condemn this arrest. This is jungle raj as there is nothing in the case. The Supreme Court has stayed the proceeding and quashed it. The notice regarding stay has been given to ED, then tell me what is remaining in this eight-year-old case,” Amarinder Singh Raja Warring said.

He further said that Congress President Kharge called me in the morning and asked us to fight for Khaira.

“His family has said that anything can happen to him,” he added.

The President of the Punjab Congress also took to X (Formerly Twitter) and called the arrest a ploy by the Punjab government to distract people from the core issues.

“The recent arrest of Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira ji smacks of Political Vendetta, it is an attempt to intimidate the opposition and is a ploy of the Punjab government to distract from core issues. We stand strongly with Sukhpal Khaira and will take this fight to its logical conclusion,” Warring posted on X.

Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa also condemned the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) led Punjab government against the detention of Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira.

“Early in the morning at 6 am, Punjab Police arrested Khaira from his residence. My brothers the sad part is that the police did not have an arrest warrant,” Bajwa said.

He further assured all the members of the Punjab Congress that we stand like a rock with the entire leadership of the party and every worker.

“We will fight hard for Khaira Ji’s release,’ he said.

He further launched an attack on Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and said that the Governments don’t last forever.

“Governments don’t last forever, I strongly criticize your dictatorial action. Today is the birth anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh and on that day you did this,” he said.

In its first response the Aam Admi Party said that the government in Punjab was just following the due course of law and Khaira’s links with drug business were no secret

” The law will take its own course. It is well-known that Sukhpal Khaira ji indulged in the drugs business. He kept getting protection from earlier governments. Now, a proper investigation will be conducted” AAP MP Sushil Gupta said.

Sukhpal Singh Khaira was detained by Punjab police in connection with the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Khaira was hosting a Facebook Live where he can be seen arguing with police personnel as they raided his house this morning. A police official can be seen in the video telling Khaira that a SIT has been formed in an old drug smuggling case.

In the video, Khaira is also seen raising slogans of “Punjab Sarkar murdabad” as the police personnel detain him.

Earlier in 2015, there are two cases originated with the unearthing of a cross-border drug smuggling network in Fazilka, Punjab, leading to the seizure of heroin, gold biscuits, weapons, cartridges, and Pakistani SIM cards and the second of a fake passport racket being run in Delhi.

As the trial went on, nine smugglers, including Gurdev Singh, Manjit Singh, Harbans Singh, and Subhash Chander, were sentenced in October 2017 in connection with the Fazilka case. As per the chargesheet, Khaira was closely associated with Gurdev Singh, the leader of the Fazilka drug smuggling racket, and is accused of having sheltered him.

The primary accusations against Khaira include supporting an international gang of smugglers, having sheltered him and receiving financial benefits from drug traffickers, and enjoying the proceeds of crime.

On February 16, 2023, a Supreme Court bench of Justices BR Gavai and Vikram Nath quashed the summoning order against Khaira in the drugs case.

Sukhpal Khaira is an MLA from Bholath in Kapurthala of Punjab and Chairman of All India Kisan Congress.

The arrest of Sukhpal Khaira is expected to further dent the relations of AAP and the Congress which have come together to form the INDIA alliance at the centre. The state unit of the Congress has opposed any tie-up or seat-sharing arrangement with the AAP in Punjab. (ANI)
