Punjab Farmers Fighting For Others Rights As Well

‘Punjab Farmers Are Fighting for the Rights of Millions of Others’

Joe John, a farmer from Kottayam, Kerala, who practices sustainable agricultural methods, finds it distressing when the state treats protesting farmers as enemy of the state. His views:

About the current farmers protest in Punjab, there’s a mixed feeling of both sadness and joy. The sad part is that the farmers have to be return to the streets after an year-long protest couple of years back which led to the proposed farm laws being repealed. The good part is that it serves as an inspiration for all others to struggle and get what is their due, their fundamental right, from the government. They would not allow themselves to be trampled by the raw power which the State is putting out against the struggle, as if they are enemies of the nation!

Thus I totally empathise with all my brothers and sisters from Punjab who are out on the streets fighting for the rights of millions of farmers across the country.

The fact is food prices have been kept low for decades and farmers have cross-subsidised other sections. One should look at the prices of agricultural produce historically and the salaries of government employees, to name just one section, to get an idea of the kind of disparity which exists. It’s not a correct picture when governments keep on harping about the amount of subsidies which is being given to the farmers and forget about the rise in input costs, be it wages, manure or other aspects of agriculture.

Not just industrialists, even people employed in the organised sector are able to get their demands fulfilled by the government because they are more organised and have more resources to ensure that these are fulfilled.

John says income of farmers has not risen in proportion to other stratas of society

One of the reasons for the neglect of the agricultural sector could be that there is a lack of a formal body which represents not only the interests of the farmers, but also of all others who have a direct stake in the well-being of this sector which provides employment to such a large section of the working population. Hopefully, these struggles, in the last couple of years, will be a turning point.

ALSO READ: Understanding the MSP Issue, India and WTO

By not giving legal guarantees for MSP, which is one of the key demands of the current struggle, the BJP-led government in Delhi is trying to wash away its responsibility. One can agree that the current MSP mechanism is only benefitting a very small section of our farmers, as it covers a very low proportion of our agricultural produce, both in terms of quantity as well as the variety of crops. In most states the farmers are totally dependent on private traders for selling their produce and it’s mostly distress-selling which happens. This is because not only farmers do not have space for storing their produce, but, also, they do not have clarity about the movement of prices. Indeed, APMCs need to be set up all over the country with proper infrastructure which are closer to the location of farmers.

Climate change is going to be the biggest threat in the coming years and there is a need for widespread adoption of agro-ecological practices. However, one cannot expect the farmers to do this on their own without any support from the government. A country like India which has such a large proportion of population dependant on agricultural and allied sectors, cannot afford to be complacent on this issue. This is because it is going to affect the livelihoods of millions of people on the ground across the country, and threaten our short-term and long-term food security.

Abhay Deol

Abhay Celebrates 19 Yrs Of Socha Na Tha

Nineteen years ago, Abhay Deol made his debut with the film ‘Socha Na Tha’. Today, on the film’s anniversary, the actor took a trip down memory lane and said it “feels like it was only yesterday.”

To mark this occasion, Abhay shared a poster featuring him and Ayesha Takia along with a lengthy note.

“On this day 19 years ago, I made my debut in the film “Socha Na Tha”. Still feels like it was only yesterday! It’s been quite the learning curve, how innocent and naive we were.

Whilst I’m happy that I didn’t cave into market demands and package myself into a brand via endorsements and P.R, I do wish I was a bit more savvy,” he said.

“But here I am, 19 years later, still making movies. I cannot be more grateful. And I did become a brand via the film choices I made. I faced the successes and failures of my choices by myself. Following my heart has taught me many valuable lessons. I wouldn’t change a thing, because I wouldn’t be the man I am today, so comfortable in his skin. Although I do wish I’d gotten my own stylist for the movie, and someone to tell me that my side burns made me look like a 70’s…!”

Helmed by Imtiaz Ali, which was his directorial debut. ‘Socha Na Tha’ featured debutants Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia in lead roles.

Despite receiving positive reviews from critics, the film did not make a significant mark at the box office. It explores the complexities of love and relationships.

As soon as the post was uploaded, fans and industry members flooded the comment section.

Bobby Deol drooped star emoticons.

One of the users wrote, “wonderful movie watched it almost 6 -7 times.”

Another user commented, “So far one of the best love stories. Have watched it almost 20 times! Simply beautiful.”

Meanwhile, Abhay Deol is gearing up for his next ‘Bun Tikki’, and on Sunday, he shared a picture from the last day of shooting.

Taking to Instagram story, Abhay treated fans with a selfie featuring him and crew at the back.

Sharing the photo, he wrote, “Last day last shot. Gonna miss this crew.”

Recently, Abhay shared a picture with Shabana Azmi and Zeenat Aman along with a sweet note.

He recalled being an underconfident and bullied child.

The note read, “I was quite the under confident, under achieving, bullied child. No one had any expectations of me and neither did I inspire confidence from anyone. But that’s the beauty of life, anything is possible, so don’t stop learning. Now here I am, working with these two legends, @thezeenataman and @azmishabana18, pictured here along with my director @farazarifansari who is not a legend, (yet!).”

He added, “Believe in yourself, validate yourself, it’s the internal that influences the external. Only you can put yourself down, or up, don’t give that power away to anyone. Our film “Bun Tikki” is almost over, and like me, it’s a little film that dares to dream big. So can you! Thank you @farazarifansari, for believing in me.”

‘Bun Tikki’ stands out among debut pictures of the year, bringing together two renowned actors, Shabana Azmi and Zeenat Aman, on the big screen. (ANI)

BRS Congress Modi

Cong, BRS Are Two Sides Of Same Coin: Modi Hits Opposition

Alleging a four-decade-long nexus between ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and Congress for covering each other’s scam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday hit back at both parties and said that both the parties are “two sides” of the “same coin.”

Addressing a public rally in Sangareddy, PM Modi said that the Modi government does not hesitate before conducting surgical strikes or airstrikes (corruption).

“Congress and BRS are two sides of the same coin. There is a nexus between both parties. They provide a cover for each other’s scam. Congress has made Telangana its new ATM. Such behaviour will not go on for long… Modi govt does not hesitate before conducting surgical strikes or airstrikes,” the Prime Minister said.

The Prime Minister asserted that members of ‘Parivarvadi’ parties opened bank accounts outside India to hide their black money.

“Members of ‘Parivarvadi’ parties open bank accounts outside India to hide their black money, while I help the poor to open Jan Dhan accounts and propel their growth. ‘Parivarvadis’ live in luxurious homes, while I make sure that the poor get to sleep in pucca houses. ‘Parivarvadi’ sold India’s resources to uplift their children, while I strive to convert the dreams of your children into reality… 140 crore Indians are my family,” he said.

PM Modi further said that he has deposited all the gifts in Toshakhana and it is auctioned and is being invested in the service of Mother Ganga.

“The monthly payment that I receive from the government, whenever I get a chance, I donate some of it to people. ‘Parivarvadis’ have taken expensive gifts while being in the government and have converted their black money into white through gifts, but till date, I have deposited all the gifts in Toshakhana and it is auctioned and whatever money comes, it is invested in the service of Mother Ganga,” he asserted.

The Prime Minister reiterated the “400 seats pitch” during his address to a public event and said that the slogan of ‘400 paar’ is being raised because the country has faith in “Modi’s guarantee.”

“Support us to build a Viksit Bharat. “Abki Baar, 400 Paar!” he added.

The Prime Minister asserted that the BRS and Congress lack vision for the development of Telangana. BJP is fully committed to diligently serving the people of the state.

PM Modi is on three visits to Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, West Bengal and Bihar from March 4 to 6. (ANI)

former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda

State Must Comply With SC Order On Cauvery: Deve Gowda

As the state capital, Bengaluru, grappled with a drinking water crisis, former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda on Tuesday said the state should continue to release water from the Cauvery River to neighbouring Tamil Nadu.

The senior Janata Dal (Secular) leader said the Congress government in the state should ensure compliance with the Supreme Court order, mandating the release of 10TMC water to Tamil Nadu every day for four months, till May 1, even in the face of the ongoing crisis.

Addressing reporters in the state capital on Tuesday, the former PM said, “The Supreme Court directed that the state must release 10 TMC water (from the Cauvery) every day for four months, till May 1, to Tamil Nadu. Our party has no objection to us sharing water with a neighbouring state to ensure compliance with the apex court order. However, they (the government) are not even releasing the water that is available to them. The state must release all the water at its disposal and then see if the water crisis in Bengaluru is resolved or not.”

“The onus is on the Congress government to do what it needs to in the best interests of the state and the people,” he added.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, his deputy DK Shivakumar and fellow cabinet ministers, along with officials and secretaries of respective departments, held a crucial meeting earlier on Tuesday to address the ongoing drinking water crisis in Bengaluru.

According to local reports, water sources in many villages across the state have dried up. The problem has been further compounded by the depletion of groundwater and the drying up of more than 3000 borewells in the capital city.

Speaking to ANI on Tuesday, Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar said the government has taken a ‘serious’ note of the prevailing situation. “We have taken a very serious view of the matter and looking at arriving at a resolution at the earliest. I attended a meeting with all the officials concerned and we are in the process of identifying points from where we could source water to alleviate the ongoing crisis. More than 3000 borewells in Bengaluru have dried up,” he said.

Also, on Tuesday, the deputy CM warned all tanker operators that their vehicles would be impounded if they did not register themselves with government authorities by March 7, the deadline set for them.

As the state stares at a more severe summer this year than the last, according to Met officials, an estimated 7,082 villages and 1,193 wards, including those in Bengaluru Urban district, could face a drinking water crisis in the coming months, as per an assessment of the government on February 10.

Further, the Revenue Department, in a report, identified the majority of villages in Tumakuru district (746) and wards in Uttara Kannada as being at risk of a water crisis in the coming months.

In Bengaluru Urban district, as many as 174 villages and 120 wards were shown to be vulnerable to a water crisis. (ANI)

Speaking on the incident, Bharatiya Janata Party leader and senior advocate Nalin Kohli said that such elements have suddenly started coming up in Karnataka who want to say “Pakistan Zindabad”, who issue life threats to PM Modi and who are planting bombs in a restaurant.

“This shows that such elements have suddenly started coming up in Karnataka who want to say “Pakistan Zindabad”, who issue life threats to PM Modi and who are planting bombs in a restaurant. Karnataka Police and other agencies are indeed working but what is the mindset behind all of this?” Nalin Kohli said. (ANI)

Abhijit Gangopadhyay BJP

Gangopadhyay: Will join BJP, After Stepping Down As Calcutta HC Judge

Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who stepped down as a judge of the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday announced that he will join the Bharatiya Janata Party.

“Maybe on 7th (March) in the afternoon. There is a tentative program, when I will join BJP,” Gangopadhyay said while addressing mediapersons here today.

“The party will decide whether there will be candidates in the Lok Sabha or not. The ruling party of the state has inspired me to enter politics,” Gangopadhyay said.

Earlier today, he announced that he has stepped down as a judge of the Calcutta High Court.

Gangopadhyay had already conveyed his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu and planned to meet Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam later today for a “courtesy visit”.

He arrived at his chamber at the High Court in the morning, after which the resignation letter was sent.

Gangopadhyay rulings on various education-related issues in the state stirred political debates.

Ganguly had expressed his desire to serve the public, stating that it was his conscience calling.

“For the last two or more years I have been dealing with some matters, especially education matters, regarding which a huge corruption has been discovered and unearthed. A large number of important persons in the education sector of this government are now languishing in jail, under trial,” he said while speaking to ANI on Tuesday.

He said the reason for him quitting the job was a call of his conscience and added he would work towards the welfare of the public.

Earlier in February, the Supreme Court tagged Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee’s plea to issue directions to take action against Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay for his alleged “continuous politically motivated interviews” in connection with sub-judice cases. (ANI)

As per information, the deceased has been identified as 31-year-old Nibin Maxwell, son of Pathrose Maxwell, from Kollam district in Kerala. Reports have also confirmed that the other two injured are also from Kerala.

Nibin Maxwell had arrived in Israel two months ago and was working in a farm there.

In its statement, the Israeli embassy said, “We are deeply shocked and saddened by the death of one Indian national and the injury of two others due to a cowardly terror attack launched by Shia terror organization Hezbollah, on peaceful agriculture workers who were cultivating an orchard at the northern village of Margaliot yesterday early afternoon. Mahua Moitra

ED Issues 2nd Summons To Mohua

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday issued a second summons to Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra in connection with irregularities in a foreign exchange contravention case asking her to join the probe on March 11.

The fresh summons followed the earlier one when she skipped the investigation and did not appear before the investigators on February 19.

Moitra has been asked to appear before the agency’s headquarters in Delhi with some documents related to some foreign investments.

The agency wants to question Moitra in the case under the provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), 1999.

The ED investigators want to record her statement linked to the case.

The 49-year-old politician is being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) too and it is conducting a preliminary inquiry into the allegations against her on the reference from the Lokpal.

It is learnt that the ED case is based on the reference of the CBI case.

Moitra has been in controversy since Bharatiya Janata Party MP Nishikant Dubey accused her of asking questions in the Lok Sabha to target the Adani Group and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the behest of businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for gifts.

Dube had also accused Moitra of compromising national security for monetary gains.

Moitra was expelled as a Lok Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) on December 8 following the Ethics panel’s determination of her guilt in the ‘cash-for-query’ case. Moitra has denied any wrongdoing and claimed she was being targeted as she had raised questions on the deals of the Adani Group.

“Neither has Lok Pal uploaded any referral order on the website as per the Lokpal Act and nor has CBI put out anything official. ‘Sources’ telling journos as per usual media circus. Hope Rs 13,000 crore Adani coal scam merits CBI PE before my witchhunt,” Moitra had said on X in November.

Moitra had also approached the Supreme Court challenging her expulsion from the lower house of Parliament in connection with the ‘cash-for-query’ allegations. (ANI)
