UK Sends Naval Ship, Announces Support For Maritime Aid Boost For Gaza

Amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, the UK government announced military and civilian support to set up a maritime aid corridor to Gaza, including the deployment of a navy ship to join the lifesaving mission in the Eastern Mediterranean.

In a press release, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said, “The UK Government is today announcing a package of military and civilian support to set up a maritime aid corridor to Gaza, including the deployment of a Royal Navy ship to join the life-saving mission in the Eastern Mediterranean.”

“The ship, alongside new UK aid and British expertise, will support the establishment of an international humanitarian maritime corridor from Cyprus to Gaza, supported by many of our partner governments and the UN, and is expected to be operational in early May,” it added.

Apart from deploying navy ship, the UK government also committed to provide aid deliveries worth up to £9.7 million, equipment support to the corridor, like forklift trucks and storage units and expertise, to maximise the levels of aid reaching those people who desperately need it.

In the press release, the UK government said that it is doing everything possible to get more aid into Gaza by air, land and sea. It further said that the Royal Air Force conducted five airdrops along the coastline of Gaza, safely delivering over 40 tonnes of food supplies, including water, flour and baby formula.

The UK government said that it continues to call for an immediate humanitarian pause leading to a sustainable ceasefire as the fastest way to get hostages safely home. According to the press release, land deliveries in Gaza will be scaled up with the opening of the Erez crossing, which the UK wants to see reopened permanently.

In a press release, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said, “Supporting the Jordanian humanitarian land corridor from Amman into Gaza and in partnership with the World Food Programme, the UK’s largest delivery of aid crossed the border on 13 March which saw more than 2,000 tonnes of food aid being distributed on the ground to families in need.”

UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron has called the situation in Gaza “dire” and the prospect of famine “real”. He said that UK remains committed to getting aid to those who desperately need it.

“The situation in Gaza is dire and the prospect of famine is real. We remain committed to getting aid to those who so desperately need it. Along with the US, Cyprus and other partners, we are setting up a new temporary pier off the coast of Gaza to get aid in as quickly and securely as possible,” Cameron said in the release.

He called land access crucial to delivering aid at the scale now required. He stated that the opening of Erez and the Port of Ashdod is hugely welcome and something the UK has long been calling for.

Cameron noted that Israel has agreed to increase the number of aid trucks entering Gaza to a minimum of 500 a day. He further said, “We need to continue to explore all options, including by sea and air, to ease the desperate plight of some of the world’s most vulnerable people.”

Meanwhile, UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said, “A Royal Navy ship is now en-route to the Eastern Mediterranean to support international efforts to get life-saving aid to Gaza.”

Shapps said armed forces are playing a central role in delivering aid, with the Royal Air Force conducting five airdrops of food supplies for the people of Gaza.

He added, “We are now going further, working with international partners to set up a humanitarian maritime corridor from Cyprus to Gaza. A new temporary pier on the coast of Gaza will be critical to supporting these efforts, by hosting cargo ships to deliver aid by sea.”

Meanwhile, the United Nations humanitarian aid chief called the war in Gaza a “betrayal of humanity” as the war between Israel and Hamas is reaching its six-month mark, CNN reported.

In a statement shared on X, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths, marked the “terrible milestone.”

He stated, “Rarely has there been such global outrage at the toll of conflict, with seemingly so little done to end it and instead so much impunity.”

He said a moment of remembrance and mourning is “not enough,” and instead urged for a “reckoning” as the people of Gaza face “death, devastation and now the immediate prospect of a shameful man-made famine,” according to CNN report.

He expressed grave concerns over the “already fragile” aid operation in Gaza, which is continually undermined by bombardments, insecurity and a lack of access, CNN reported.

Griffiths said, “On this day, my heart goes out to the families of those killed, injured or taken hostage, and to those who face the particular suffering of not knowing the plight of their loved ones.”

His statement comes after a week that saw the death toll in Gaza exceed 33,000 and an Israeli strike that killed seven World Central Kitchen humanitarian aid workers.

The IDF termed the incident as a ‘grave mistake’. (ANI)

All Parties Will Try to Reap Electoral Gains From Ansari’s Death

Sanjay Srivastava, an advocate in the Poorvanchal region, says while BJP will use Ansari’s death to bolster its anti-Mafia claim, others will raise questions on his untimely death. His views:

Mukhtar enjoyed immense popularity in a particular community of eastern Uttar Pradesh along with a good number of followers and admirers amongst other (communities) as well. His death will definitely send a wave of sympathy among his followers, while others who feared his strong-arm tactics breathe a sigh of relief. Political parties, indeed, will try to use his death and its circumstance to their electoral advantage, even though it will only have a very limited impact

The BJP which has been boasting about its crackdown on the mafia as its biggest achievement, will use it to bolster its ‘Mitti me Mafia’ slogan. For, the ruling party is aware of the attempts by other political parties to polarize the elections by raising the issue of Mukhtar’s death and seeking votes by empathising with his supporters. BJP will now be more vocal among the voters on the issue in its election campaign.

It is also clearly visible (since Mukhtar’s death) that the opposition parties have started making all efforts to polarize votes into their accounts. SP was the first to express condolences on the social media raising questions on the intent of the state government machinery in the matter followed by BSP supremo Mayawati, who went a step ahead demanding a high-level investigation into the cause of death!

SBSP chief Om Prakash Rajbhar was also not left behind when he declared Mukhtar a `Gareebon Ka Masiha’, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi also encashed the opportunity by visiting the bereaved family at their home town in Ghazipur. However, on the accusation of Mukhtar’s family of him being given poison in the jail, Congress UP chief Ajay Rai also expressed concern and said that the accusations are big and they should be deeply investigated.

However his death will not have any drastic effect in the region other than the Ghazipur Lok Sabha seat where Mukhtar’s brother Afzal is the sitting MP from the BSP. The seat has by and large remained with the SP and the BSP for the past two decades with Afzal winning it in 2004 (SP) and 2019 (BSP). In 2009, another candidate from SP, Radha Mohan Singh and the BJP won only once (in the past 20 years) when Manoj Sinha won from here in 2014. Afzal has been once again given the ticket from the Ghazipur seat, however this time by his old accomplice SP.

The Ansari family also enjoys substantial influence in the neighboring Mau district which is also reflected by the result of the lone Ghosi seat where the SP and the BSP have been winning for the past two decades barring 2014 when the BJP’s Hari Narayan Rajbhar had won.

Mukhtar was the most notorious name of UP for the past few decades as the mastermind of organized crime and with the continuous shockers on the legal front during the last two years (ever since he was shifted to UP’s Banda jail from Punjab), his terror machinery was deteriorating increasingly helpless and getting paralyzed. With his death ending a chapter of crime, the issue of law and order has again come into discussion with the ruling BJP again pressing its commitment of a safe and developing state on all fronts.

As told to Rajat Rai

Taiwan Earthquake: Daily Aftershocks Drop To 89 From 314

The number of daily aftershocks after a powerful 7.4 earthquake rocked Huwalien City on April 3 has shown a declining trend, reported Central News Agency Focus Taiwan, citing the Central Weather Administration’s (CWA) statement on Sunday.

Data showed a decline in the daily count of aftershocks over the past few days, dropping from 314, 167, and 111 to 89.

As of 8.12 am Sunday, a total of 681 aftershocks had hit Taiwan, including two exceeding a magnitude of 6, one of magnitude 6.5, and another 6.2 that struck at 8.11 am and 10:14 am on April 3 and 24, ranging from magnitude 5 to 6, CWA data showed, as per Focus Taiwan.

During the recent timeframe, a total of 208 earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 4 to 5 were recorded.

Over the past 24 hours, there have been three earthquakes with magnitudes of 5 or higher, including a 5.2 and a 5.3 tremor at 11.52 am and 6.47 pm on Saturday, respectively, and a 5.1 quake at 5.15 am on Sunday.

Additionally, 19 earthquakes ranging from magnitudes 4 to 5 occurred within this period, as per the provided data.

According to Focus Taiwan, the magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Hualien County in eastern Taiwan at 7.58 am on Wednesday, leaving 13 dead, 1,133 injured, and six missing, as of 8 am (local time) on Sunday.

By 7.57 am on April 4, approximately 24 hours after the magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck, Taiwan experienced 314 aftershocks. As of 8.05 am (local time) on Friday, the cumulative tally rose to 481 aftershocks, and by 8.02 am on Saturday, the total reached 592 aftershocks, as per data shared by CWA.

However, a recent report published by the island’s fire department stated that approximately 400 people are still stranded and waiting to be rescued, following the 7.4-magnitude temblor, CNN reported.

Meanwhile, the death toll from the quake increased to 13, Taiwan’s National Fire Agency (NFA) said, after three bodies were recovered from a walking trail through the mountainous region. Of them, two bodies were recovered on Friday and the other on Saturday, the NFA said, while adding that the teams were still working to confirm the identities of the bodies recovered, CNN reported.

“More than a thousand people are being treated for injuries, and six persons are still missing,” an official said, according to CNN. (ANI)

Kharge Congress J-K

Biggest Issue In LS Poll Is Unemployment, By BJP: Cong

Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge said on Sunday that the biggest issue in the Lok Sabha elections is unemployment imposed by the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP).

He also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guarantee of providing 2 crore jobs reverberates as a bad dream in the hearts of our youth.

In a long post on his social media platform X, the Congress chief said, “The biggest issue in these Lok Sabha elections is Unemployment, imposed by the BJP. Our Youth are struggling to find jobs, and we are staring at a demographic nightmare”

“Take the case of India’s Premier Institutes – IITs and IIMs Across 12 IITs, around 30% of our students are not getting regular placements. Only 20% of 21 IIMs could complete the summer placements so far. If this is the situation in IITs and IIMs, then one can imagine how the BJP has destroyed the future of our Youth across the country,” Kharge wrote.

“The rate of youth unemployment under Modi Govt has tripled since 2014. The ILO’s recent India Employment Report showed that each year, India adds around 70-80 lakh youths to the labour force, but between 2012 and 2019, there was almost ZERO growth in employment – just 0.01%!,” he said.

“‘Modi Ki Guarantee’ about providing 2 Cr Jobs reverberates as a bad dream in the hearts and minds of our Youth!,” the Congress leader said.

“Any diploma or degree holder below the age of 25, will now have a legal right to demand employment and shall be paid at least Rs 1 Lakh per year. This would remove the barriers that separate work and learning, thereby opening fresh avenues for career growth,’ he said.

Kharge on Saturday said that, unlike PM Modi, his party does not make false promises.

The remarks came after Congress released its manifesto titled ‘Nyay Patra’ on Friday while the BJP had called it “bundle of false claims”.

Kharge said, “We have promised to fulfil 25 guarantees, if our party comes to power. Unlike PM Modi, we don’t tell lies. He has given several guarantees, but I want to ask you which guarantee has been fulfilled so far. He gave the guarantee to provide 2 crore jobs every year. So, in the last 10 years, he had to provide 20 crore jobs. I want to ask if you have got 20 crore jobs or not?”

Earlier, on Friday, the Congress came out with its ‘Nyay Patra’ or manifesto for the seven-phased Lok Sabha elections, guaranteeing, among others, a minimum support price (MSP) to farmers on their produce as per the Swaminathan Commission report.

The Lok Sabha elections are scheduled to be held across seven phases, starting April 19. The counting of votes is scheduled for June 4. (ANI)

Czech Probes Chinese Diplomat Accused Of Tailing Taiwanese VP-Elect

The Czech Republic government initiated an investigation into an alleged incident concerning a Chinese embassy staff member accused of tailing Taiwan’s Vice President-elect Hsiao Bi-khim in the Czech capital, Prague, during her March visit to the country, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in the country stated on Saturday, Focus Taiwan reported.

Hsiao will become Taiwan’s next vice president in May and visit the Czech Republic in March.

Hsiao, 52, has served as Taiwan’s top representative to the US since July 2020 until she resigned from the post to become Lai Ching-te’s running mate in November 2023 for the January 13 presidential race, as per Focus Taiwan.

“The Czech side made the remarks after Taiwan asked its representative office in Prague to contact Czech Republic authorities in the wake of a report by the Prague-based news site Seznam Zpravy on Friday alleging a Chinese diplomat was stopped by police while following Hsiao’s motorcade in Prague last month,” MOFA said in a statement.

“Hsiao visited the Central European country from March 17-19 at the invitation of the Prague-based think tank, Sinopsis, to speak at a seminar,” it added.

According to Focus Taiwan, the Czech authorities were responsible for Hsiao’s security during her three-day trip.

In a social media post in English on April 5, Jakub Janda, the head of the Czech-based think tank European Values Centre for Security Policy, referenced a report by Seznam Zpravy.

The report indicated that during Vice President-elect Hsiao Bi-khim’s motorcade from Prague airport to the city centre, a vehicle was discovered tailing her.

“Czech Police Protective Service stopped this car and found out it was driven by a Chinese diplomat from the military section of the Chinese Embassy in Prague,” Janda said, adding that the “Chinese governmental surveillance” continued until Hsiao arrived at her hotel in Prague.

After the incident, the Czech Foreign Ministry summoned Chinese Ambassador Feng Biao. Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky expressed dissatisfaction with Feng’s explanation of the matter, and his ministry “does not consider this issue to be closed,” Janda quoted as saying by Seznam Zpravy.

A Czech government source told Janda that it was considering declaring the Chinese diplomat persona non grata.

In the same report, Czech Senator Pavel Fischer, chair of the Foreign Affairs, Defence, and Security Committee, said the said Chinese diplomat’s alleged behaviour was ‘like a gangster’.

Citing the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the senator asserted that the Chinese diplomat could be expelled, adding that the Czech Republic should consider it.

Thus far, the Chinese foreign ministry and its embassy in Prague have not responded to the allegation against one of its diplomats.

In Taipei, lawmakers from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), of which Hsiao is a member, condemned Beijing for the incident, describing it as another instance of ‘wolf warrior diplomacy’ directed towards Taiwan, despite Hsiao maintaining a low-key presence throughout her visit to the Czech Republic.

DPP legislative caucus secretary-general Wu Szu-yao urged Beijing to immediately halt its coercive diplomatic approach, while calling on democratic allies worldwide to jointly condemn China over the latest incident.

Wu called on the Taiwanese government to provide enhanced security to its senior officials during overseas trips to ensure similar incidents don’t happen again.

According to MOFA, aside from the Czech Republic, Hsiao also visited Poland, Lithuania, and the European Parliament last month, where she met with Taiwan-friendly European parliamentarians.

Before her visit to Europe, Hsiao travelled to the US on a personal trip, MOFA added. (ANI)

Slovakia's Parliament Speaker Peter Pellegrini

Slovakia: Peter Pellegrini wins presidential elections

Slovakia’s Parliament Speaker Peter Pellegrini secured a win against pro-West career diplomat Ivan Korcok for the Slovak presidency in a runoff election held on Saturday, Politico reported.

The election result gives Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico’s ruling coalition full control over the executive and legislative branches of government. As 99.9 per cent of ballots have been counted, Peter Pellegrini received 53 per cent of the vote, while Korcok got 47 per cent votes. Pellegrini said, “This victory is an enormous vindication for me.”

Korcok accepted the defeat by saying, “I’m disappointed and bummed out, to be honest, but as a sportsman I have to respect the result.” He even criticised the aggressive campaign methods of the Pellegrini camp, Politico reported.

Notably, the Slovakian President has limited powers that include appointing ambassadors, returning legislation to parliament and issuing amnesties.

Pellegrini and his supporters’ campaigning for the polls demonstrated importance that Fico’s coalition government, which includes Pellegrini’s Hlas (Voice) party puts on controlling the presidency and rest of the executive branch.

After Korcok defeated Pellegrini by five percentage points in the first round of polls two weeks ago, the latter on March 24 vowed to “maintain decency” and “not to descend into aggressive tactics” before the runoff which was scheduled for Saturday.

Two days later, Fico called Korcok as “a warmonger who unhesitatingly supports everything the West tells him, including dragging Slovakia into [the Russia-Ukraine] war,” according to Politico report.

Ivan Korcok, who has previously served as Slovakia’s foreign minister and country’s permanent representative to the EU, said that it was actually Fico’s government and parliamentary majority, not the president, that had the power to start war as per the constitution of Slovakia.

Korcok said he saw no reason to send Slovakian soldiers to fight in Ukraine. However, he added that he supported Ukraine in its war against Russia as “Ukraine’s security increases our own security … It’s clear that if Ukraine loses the war, it brings war that much closer to our own border.”

While addressing a press conference on March 27, Slovakia’s minister of social affairs and a member of Pellegrini’s party, Erik Tomas, said, “I want to tell people, seniors and all at-risk groups, that if Korcok becomes president and this government falls, you will lose all your social benefits.”

Erik Tomas did not mention how Korcok could make the government to fall or what power the presidency had over social benefits, which needed to be approved by Tomas’ own ministry.

At the same press conference, Pellegrini spoke about the COVID-19 pandemic, which erupted during the previous 2020-2023 government when Korcok worked as foreign minister, Politico reported.

Offering support to pensioners, Peter Pellegrini said that “during the pandemic, they were locked up at home … they froze the minimum pensions, on which you can barely survive, and for several years they did not increase them even by a penny.”

Tomas announced a one-time payment of EUR300 to pensioners “as compensation and recompense for all these damages” and a Christmas pension bonus of EUR600.

On March 28, Slovakian Defence Minister Robert Kalinak said that some 20,000 Slovak soldiers and ministry employees would be receiving a EUR500 spring bonus.

Further, Slovakian Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok, who is also a member of Pellegrini’s Hlas party, said on social media that almost 24,000 police and firefighters would be receiving a EUR500 bonus in their next pay packets.

On April 5, members of Pellegrini’s party shared doctored pictures of a frail older woman embracing a man in military fatigues. While sharing the pictures, the members of the Hlas party wrote, “Come out and vote. Don’t let Slovak sons and grandsons die in war.” (ANI)

Mahagathbandhan Rattled Ahead Of Modi’s Bihar Visit: Shahnawaz

Senior BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain said on Sunday the grand Opposition alliance or ‘Mahagathbandhan’ in the state is rattled as Prime Minister Narendra Narendra Modi arrives to address an election rally in Bihar’s Nawada on Sunday.

PM Modi has been holding campaign events across the country, braving a hectic schedule as the polling dates near.

On Saturday, PM Modi addressed election rallies in Saharanpur and Ajmer, followed later in the day with a roadshow in Ghaziabad.

“The RJD and the Mahagathbandhan are rattled as PM Modi is visiting Bihar. He is visiting Bihar because the state holds a special place in his heart and the people, too, love him back,” Hussain told ANI.

Expressing confidence of the NDA winning all 40 Lok Sabha seats in the state, the BJP leader added, “This time, the Mahagathbandhan won’t even get even one seat in the elections. The people of Bihar have decided to give all 40 seats in the state to PM Modi.”

At one of his rallies on Saturday, PM Modi launched a scathing attack on the Congress, saying its manifesto was a ‘bundle of lies’. He added that every page in the ‘Nyay Patra’ of the grand old party reeks of a mentality to ‘tear India apart’.

“Yesterday, the Congress Party released its manifesto, a bundle of lies. Every page of this smells of breaking India into pieces. The Congress manifesto has echoes of the views that the Muslim League held at the time of independence. Congress wants to impose the views of the Muslim League of that time on the India of today,” PM Modi said.

The ruling National Democratic Alliance, earlier, reached a seat-sharing agreement in Bihar for the Lok Sabha polls as part of which the BJP would contest 17 seats and the JD-U 16.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the NDA, comprising the BJP, JD (U), and LJP, dominated the standings, winning 39 of the 40 seats in the state.

In the first phase of polling on April 19, voting is to be held for 4 seats of Bihar. These are Aurangabad, Gaya, Nawada and Jamui.

Bihar, along with neighbouring Bengal, will poll across all seven phases–April 19, April 26, May 7, May 13, May 20, May 25, and June 1.

The counting of votes is scheduled for June 4. (ANI)

Modi Should Make Equality & Not Growth His Main Target

A crucial and key aspect of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) election campaign is the rallies that Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses across India. Modi, 73, is a powerful orator and he has a hectic itinerary, criss-crossing the country to address public rallies, sometimes as many as three or even four in a single day. The rallies are usually huge, with hundreds of thousands of people turning up to hear him deliver his speeches, which resonate regardless of one’s political views. In India’s current political scenario there isn’t anybody else whose public speeches can match up to Modi’s.

Last week, in Cooch Behar a northern district of West Bengal, which will go to the polls on April 19 in the first phase of India’s 44-day parliamentary elections, Modi, in his customary style of exhorting public responses (and sometimes referring to himself in the third person), asked the crowd four rhetorical questions: Should we or should we not make India the world’s third largest economic power? For that do we need a strong government or not? Does Modi provide a strong government or not? Will Modi provide a strong government in future or not?

The target of making India the world’s third largest economy (measured by GDP) is not only attainable but it may even be low-hanging fruit–not very difficult to pick. Economists and organisations like the World Economic Forum (WEF) believe India’s economy is on track to become the world’s third largest, possibly by the end of this decade.

India is currently the world’s fifth largest economy with a GDP of around $3.7 trillion. The US and China hold the top two spots, followed by Japan and Germany.

India’s economic growth rate is expected to be around 6.7% on average over the next seven years, which is higher than most other major economies. This growth is fueled by factors like a large young population, increasing digital adoption, government reforms, growth in domestic consumption, and investment in infrastructure.

Several financial institutions believe India can achieve its target of becoming the third biggest economy within the next 3-7 years by maintaining a growth rate of around 7-8% This would require surpassing the growth rates of Germany and Japan, and staying competitive with China’s projected growth.

According to S&P, the American credit rating agency, India could achieve this goal by 2030, or, just after the end of term of the next Parliament. Others, including Modi, believe it could happen even earlier.

Shocking Inequality is Widening

Becoming the third-largest economic power would undoubtedly be a moment of pride for all Indians. Yet, the more important challenge–and one that no one, including Modi, likes talking about–is the deplorable level of economic inequality in India. While India’s policymakers and politicians have professed to make growth inclusive and ensure that the benefits of economic progress reach all segments of society, it has not happened.

In his speech at Cooch Behar last week, Modi claimed that in the past 10 years, his government had pulled 250 million Indians out of poverty. It is true that during his regime, which began in 2014, India has witnessed a significant decline in multidimensional poverty from 29.17% in 2013-14 to 11.28% in 2022-23. This represents a reduction of 17.89 percentage points. Multidimensional poverty indices break down poverty levels in different areas of a country and among various sub-groups of people, and consider factors besides only income–like education, health, living standards, and other essential aspects of well-being.

Yet, as poverty declines, income inequality in India has widened. According to Oxfam India’s “Survival of the Richest: The India Supplement”, the top 1% in India owned more than 40.5% of total wealth in 2021, while the bottom 50% of the population (700 million people) has around 3% of total wealth. From the beginning of the Covid pandemic till November 2022,  billionaires in India have seen their wealth surge by 121%. That means by a staggering Rs 3608 crore per day in real terms (or Rs 2.5 crore a minute!).

Take a few moments to digest those numbers and then consider this: The country still has the world’s highest number of poor at 228.9 million. On the flipside of that is the fact that, according to Forbes, the number of billionaires in India rose from 169 last year to 200 this year, making it the world’s third largest concentration of the ultra-rich.

Additionally, the richest 10% in India collectively own 72.5% of the country’s wealth, further emphasising how acute inequality is in India and the fact that although India’s policymakers can feel proud about making it the world’s fastest growing economy, that pride is superficial. Modi’s avowed target of making India the third largest global economy means little really to the masses of people who gather to hear him speak at his election rallies.

Huge Challenge of Joblessness

According to Oxfam’s index, India ranks 147th out of 157 countries in terms of commitment to reducing inequality. India’s Gini index, which measures income distribution inequality, in 2021 was 35.7. The Gini index measures the extent to which the distribution of income or consumption among individuals or households within an economy deviates from a perfectly equal distribution. A Gini index of 0 represents perfect equality, while an index of 100 implies perfect inequality.

In a way, India is trapped in the cycle of inequality. Economic disparities hinder India’s poorest from being socially mobile and to move up the ladder. Economic inequality intersects with caste, gender, and background disparities, thus making it even more difficult to break out of that cycle.

Concentration of wealth in the hands of a few can undermine social justice and cohesion and further perpetuate inequality.

A classic textbook method of redistributing wealth is to tax incomes progressively. Yet, in India despite the concentration of wealth among a few, the number of people who pay taxes is abysmally low. Only 20.9 million people paid income tax in 2021-22. In the same year, there were 943.5 million adults among the population. Unless the income tax net is widened, meaningful redistribution of wealth will be impossible to achieve.

The biggest challenge that policymakers face is youth unemployment. According to data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) released this year, youth unemployment (20-34 age group) has been on the rise. In the October-December 2023 quarter, 44.49% of those in the age group of 20-24 were unemployed, while for the 25-29 age-group it was 14.33%, and for  the 30-34 age group it was 2.49%. Breakups of that data show that the problem is particularly acute in rural India where youth unemployment is at record levels. Remember too that the number of Indians that are 15-24 is estimated at 250 million, more than half the population of the European Union.

So when Prime Minister Modi exhorts crowds at his election rallies with slogans about making India one of the world’s most powerful economies, we might need to stop and wonder what power he is talking about.

West Bengal Governor NIA

West Bengal Governor Condemns Attack On NIA Team

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Saturday condemned the alleged attack on the officials of the National Investigation Agency in Purba Medinipur district who were carrying out a probe in connection with a blast case.

Governor Bose said that such attacks on the officers of the central agencies will have to be “dealt with with an iron hand” adding that democracy cannot afford to have such things happen in the future.

“I am getting the version of the NIA and then the report of the government, and then only as governor will I be able to say anything about it for certain. What is reported is ghastly shocking. It should never have happened. A democracy cannot afford to have such things happen in the future. The law has to take its course. The tendency of goons and anti-social elements to bully law enforcement agencies does not bring credit to anybody down the line. We should deal with it with an iron hand,” Governor CV Ananda Bose told ANI.

In a rerun of the attack on a raiding team of the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) at Sandeshkhali in the North 24 Parganas district, some officers of the elite National Investigation Agency (NIA) were allegedly heckled in Purba Medinipur district on Saturday while carrying out a probe in connection with a blast case.

According to sources in the elite anti-terror probe agency, an NIA team visiting Puba Medinipur in connection with an ongoing probe into the blast case came under attack on Saturday.

Sources said the vehicle in which the NIA officers were travelling was allegedly vandalised while a person was being picked up in connection with the case.

In a video of the alleged incident that was widely shared on social media, locals were purportedly seen gathering around a vehicle, trying to stop the NIA team from taking the suspect along with them.

In this regard, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed on Saturday that the elite anti-terror agency did not share any prior word with the state government on their visit to the area.

According to sources in the ruling TMC, the CM also questioned why the agency had to carry out this raid in the middle of the night.

Speaking on the Bhupatinagar incident, Mamata said, “Why did they have to carry out the raid at midnight? Did they have police permission? The locals reacted in the same manner as they would if any stranger were to come calling on them in the middle of the night. Why are they picking up and arresting people just before the elections? What does the BJP think–that they can get our booth agents arrested? What right does the NIA have?”

Earlier today, two accused arrested by the NIA in West Bengal’s Bhupatinagar blast case were brought to Bankshall Court, Kolkata.

Also, Congress leader Ranjan Chowdhury condemned the attack on central agencies in West Bengal.

“We condemn the attack on ED, CBI, and NIA in Bengal by government-supported goons. Whether NIA and CBI are right or not, is a different issue, but the way these agencies are being misused, INDIA alliance has been agitating against it. I cannot justify these attacks on the central agencies. We have the judiciary, which can be approached in case of any grievance,” he said. (ANI)
