‘Films Like ‘Animal’ Legitimise Misogyny, Normalise Violence’

Kashu Shubhamoorty, a Delhi-based lawyer, says the box office success of a film like Animal reflects the current state of our society

When I am asked about how I feel about movies such as Animal, I think of the increasing violence prevailing in our society, in India as well as in other countries. I heard someone say that Animal is the movie of the century! It is indeed painful that some people find gory violence and brazen sexism entertaining. This trend has been going on since quite some time, and we have reached a stage where such movies actually become runaway success.

Cinema such as Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal encourages and establishes sexual violence against women as legitimate, whereby men treat women of any age as a commodity and do not feel guilty in assaulting even a child. I remember, in an interview, famous social activist, late Kamla Bhasin, said that some of the Bollywood songs present women as a commodity. This pattern has become more apparent in movies like Animal where a woman is explicitly told that she is liked because she can bear better children. Even more surprising thing is that the woman in question here is shown to find this an attractive proposal!

In another scene, when a female character is asked to lick the shoes of the male protagonist to show her love towards him. Such misogyny also manifest in many ways in real life, and thereby lead men to expect similar, demeaning gestures from women.

A Bobo doll experiment was conducted way back in 1961 when the world was very different. Through this experimental project, the impact of violence was studied and it was found that it can make drastic changes in the behaviour of people. In the experiment it was seen that the impact of aggressive behaviour stays as a long-term phenomenon on children.

With this example we can understand what the impact of films like Animal or Salaar would make on the behaviour of people, especially men. The study is not only applicable to children, but also applies to adults. Now, with the advent of glorified violence, which is shown in many video games, and exposure to aggressive and hyper-masculine media/movies, the impact can become much more devastating.

Dr Hyacinth Byron-Cox studied that Bandura’s Bobo Doll experiments served to successively indicate that aggression can be learned through observational means, and the behaviour observed is not only confined to real-life scenarios, but, extends to include violence exhibited anywhere in various conditions.

That a film like Animal has become mainstream cinema also reflects the current state of our society. The commercial, box office driven film industry will make only that kind of cinema which sells; they will also make cinema that is sponsored, so the basic criterion is profit.

A positive fact is that some of the recent propaganda films have failed. They have not done well commercially – which is an indicator that large sections of people cannot be totally swayed by propaganda. However, this still makes me think — why should a movie contain so much violence, while there is no meaningful content, story, script or plot, worth its name?

Animals Equal Rights

Animals Have Equal Rights To Live Like Humans

“Humans are said to be a bright developing species that has a consciousness of understanding its nature, surroundings, and needs, but what is the use of this consciousness if we cannot use it for others’ welfare? As our great freedom fighter M.S. Gandhi said “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”.

The stray animals’ situation is the worst in our country. These voiceless are treated cruelly and brutally in our society. Prevention of Cruelty to animals is required. The House of Stray Animals realized the issue of animal cruelty and released a press conference on 2nd December 2022 at the Press Club of India to raise awareness for these stray animals.
Some renowned people participated in this conference, Dr. Vijay Pathak (Indian Veterinary Association – Treasury,), Sanjay Mohapatra (Founder of House of Stray Animas), Vijay Kumar (Veterinary Doctor), and Saumya Tandon (Animal Law advocate).

This press conference was organized to raise and highlight the issues stray animals face in our society every day. In the press conference, many questions were raised on how brutally these stray dogs and other animals were treated and how they have been neglected by society. No law is enforced for these voiceless animals as they are involved in road accidents, harshly catching these stray animals and no proper medication. When they fall sick or injured, there is no help or medicine provided by the government.

RWA should step up and take the initiative of feeding these stray animals and providing temporary shelter and first aid in case of any sickness or injury. Dogs are becoming aggressive because they are not being fed. They are voiceless, therefore, cannot express their pain, or they are hungry. MCD vans and dog caters handle them very harshly and the vaccinations of dogs are not done according to the medical procedure. Later the records of yearly vaccination are not maintained, and the lack of training of medical staff resulting in countless deaths on the table during the procedure, post-care, and release after the procedure is the worst. In India, we need Veterinary hospitals to be built by the government with infrastructure, Medicines, Veterinary doctors, Equipment, and staff.

People are not aware of the PCA act. Animal caretakers and volunteers are not protected and are continuously harassed by police, Residents, and RWA. Pet parents avoid and abandon their pets because of social pressure and are unaware of their pet’s needs and behavioral patterns due to lack of knowledge. People should be educated first on how to take proper care of these animals and should also be encouraged to adopt Indian breeds.

Our community should not elect those Political Parties who are making false promises against these stray animals and are planning to send them from the entire area to the pound “Jail”.

Stray animals living in the community are a part of our society and environment. However, removing them is equal to disturbing nature.

Salman Khan acquitted in Chinkara poaching case- No one killed the animal

Just like how no-one killed the people sleeping on the pavement of Bandra, nobody seems to have killed the mute Blackbuck in Rajasthan too. Since the court verdict has come in the favour of Salman Khan, now he can breath easy by giving out the message that celebrities indeed are above the law.
Salman Khan will always remember the year 2015-16 as the golden years of his life. This is not just because he had the most successful movies in these years, but, all the long-pending cases against him concluded in his favour.
The Rajasthan High Court in Jodhpur has acquitted Salman Khan in two cases of poaching Chinkara. This has come as a surprise for many as the ruling has overturned a lower court verdict in the case which was pending for the past 17-years. The actor had challenged the lower court’s orders that had handed him one and five years’ imprisonment in the two cases. The High Court on May 13, reserved the decision after completing the hearing in the matter.

The actor had spent eight days in the Jodhpur central jail in 2006 after being found guilty. But, the ruling has clearly acquitted him in the case.  The verdict has come as a huge relief after he the court gave a verdict in his favour, last year, in the hit-and-run case.
Chinkaras, or Indian gazelles, are a protected species and hunting these animals is banned. Moreover, in Rajasthan it is one of the revered species and the local tribes in the area were up in the arms when Salman was found shooting the animal. This was in the year 1998, when Salman and seven others from the film fraternity including  Neelam, Tabu and Saif Ali Khan were accused of killing a blackbuck and a chinkara in two separate incidents. One of the animals was killed at Bhawad on the outskirts of Jodhpur on September 26, 1998, and the other at Ghoda Farms on September 28, 1998. At that time, all these actors were shooting for Sooraj Barjatya’s family drama, ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’.
The actor was shooting for the film Hum Saath Saath Hain at that time. Two cases against Khan – black-buck hunting and possessing illegal arms – are still being heard by trial courts in the state. But, with this verdict it is clear now that Salman is now a free man.
