Shah Chairs High-Level Meet On Joshimath

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting to review the situation on the ‘sinking’ town of Joshimath, a town in Uttarakhand facing land subsidence affecting the lives of hundreds of families.

Shah chaired the meeting with Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari, RK Singh, Bhupendra Yadav, and Gajendra Singh Shekhawat participating, on issues related to roads, power supply, water scarcity, and environment in the Joshimath in the wake of land subsidence.
Other senior officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs, including Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, attended the meeting that lasted for nearly 40 minutes at the Home Minister’s residence.

As of now over 720 buildings have been identified that have reportedly developed cracks in the Joshimath city area due to land subsidence. Residents, as a part of the rehabilitation, have been moved to safer places even as geologists and experts scramble to ascertain the reasons for subsidence in the ecologically fragile region.

Shah took stock of the situation and directed to take relief measures in the meeting which was also learned to be attended by the National Disaster Management Authority, Senior officers of Uttarakhand; and experts from IIT Roorkee, National Institute of Disaster Management, Geological Survey of India and Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology through video conferencing.

The Home Minister was apprised that the district administration is working with the affected families to evacuate and relocate them to safer places with adequate arrangements for food, shelter, and security.

Officials have stopped construction projects in the region and the government formed a committee to look into the incident and the situation arising out of the sudden crisis.

Uttarakhand government has also ordered the authorities to start surveying and dismantling the infrastructures that are posing a threat to the surrounding buildings as well.

Uttarakhand government has also announced a relief package of Rs 45 crore to families in Joshimath, where large cracks appeared in homes and on roads. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has also declared a relief package for nearly 3,000 families affected by gradual land subsidence in the Himalayan state.

The Chief Minister has also announced that Rs 50,000 have been given by the state disaster authority to each family as a non-adjustable one-time special grant for the transportation of goods and immediate needs.

Joshimath, on the Rishikesh-Badrinath National Highway (NH 7), is an overnight halt for the people visiting the holy shrines at Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib and tourist destinations Auli, and the Valley of Flowers.

Along with Joshimath, the same phenomenon of land subsidence is also being reported from other areas of Uttarakhand including Uttarkashi, Tehri, Pauri, and Karanprayag. (ANI)

Modi Arrives In Badrinath

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at Badrinath Dham in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand on Friday.

Before arriving in Chamoli, PM Modi visited Kedarnath Dham in Rudraprayag and offered prayers in one of the holy shrines donning a traditional pahadi outfit, Chola Dora, that was gifted to him by Himachali women during his tour to the state.
PM Modi arrived at Jolly Grant airport in Dehradun earlier in the day and was received by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Gurmeet Singh.

He later laid the foundation stone of the Kedarnath ropeway project and after that visited the Adi Guru Shankaracharya Samadhi Sthal.

He also reviewed the progress of development works along Mandakini Asthapath and Saraswati Asthapath.

Prime Minister is on a visit to the Himalayan state to lay the foundation stone of projects worth over Rs 3,400 crore.

After worshipping at Badrinath, PM Modi is scheduled to review the progress of the development work of the riverfront, followed by laying the foundation stone of road and ropeway projects at Mana village. He will review the progress of the development work of the arrival plaza and lakes.

The ropeway in Kedarnath will be around 9.7 km long and will connect Gaurikund to Kedarnath, reducing the travel time between the two places from 6-7 hours at present to only about 30 mins. The Hemkund ropeway will connect Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib. It will be around 12.4 km long and will reduce the travel time from more than a day to only about 45 mins. This ropeway will also connect Ghangaria, which is the gateway to Valley of Flowers National Park, said the PMO statement.

The ropeways, which will be developed at a cumulative cost of around Rs 2,430 crore, are an environment-friendly mode of transport that will provide a safe, secure and stable mode of transport. This major infrastructure development will give a boost to religious tourism, which will give a fillip to the economic development in the region and lead to the creation of multiple employment opportunities as well.

Foundation stone for road widening projects worth around Rs 1000 crore will also be laid during the visit. The two road widening projects – from Mana to Mana Pass (NH07) and from Joshimath to Malari (NH107B) – shall be another step towards providing last-mile all-weather road connectivity to our border areas. Apart from boosting connectivity, these projects will also prove beneficial from a strategic point of view as well.

Kedarnath and Badrinath are among the most important Hindu shrines. The area is also known for one of the revered Sikh Pilgrim site – Hemkund Sahib. The connectivity projects are aimed to ease access and improve basic infrastructure in places of religious significance. (ANI)

Kedarnath: Modi Dons Chola Dora To Offer Prayers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday morning offered prayers at Uttarkhand’s Kedarnath shrine, donning a ‘Chola Dora’ outfit gifted to him by women of Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba.

The traditional pahadi outfit in white colour and sporting fine hand embroidery was gifted to the prime minister during his recent visit to Himachal. PM Modi, on receiving the gift had promised the women that he would wear it the first instance during a visit to a cold region.

By wearing the outfit at today’s visit he fulfilled that promise.

Prime Minister Modi performed puja at Kedarnath Temple today. He was accompanied by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. PM also visited the Adi Guru Shankaracharya Samadhi Sthal at Kedarnath.

Hemkund Sahib Receives Snowfall; Doors To Be Closed On Oct 10

The Hemkund Sahib, situated at an altitude of 15225 feet, received up to two inches of snow, dropping the temperature here to minus.

Hemkund Sahib has been covered with a white sheet of snow as snowfall started in high-altitude areas due to changes in weather and rain. After the bad weather in high-altitude places, it is continuously snowing.
Sikh devotees are taking a dip in this holy lake in the bitter cold as the portals of Gurudwara would be closed on October 10.

Shri Hemkunt Sahib Trust Vice President Narendra Jeet Bindra earlier informed us that the portals of Gurudwara will be closed on October 10, this year.

The doors will be closed at 1.00 pm on October 10.

Ever since the opening of its doors on May 22, the Gurudwara observed 2,15,000 devotees visiting it so far. Hemkund Sahib is considered to be the fifth Dham of Uttarakhand.

The Gurudwara management trust has further urged the visitors and devotees to plan their pilgrimage according to the schedule. This Gurudwara is one of the most revered Sikh pilgrimage sites.

Hemkunt Sahib (also known as Hemkund Sahib) is visited by thousands of devotees from all over the globe every summer. The Gurudwara is situated beside a lake and it is believed that the 10th Sikh Guru, Gobind Singh had meditated at the site.

Darma Valley, the last outpost near the China border in Uttarakhand also received the third snowfall of this season.

As there has been more than one foot of snow here, the cold has increased in 14 villages of Darma valley and seven villages of Vyas valley in the high Himalayan region.

The Darma Valley, the last outpost near the China border, has received about 1 foot of snow in the low-lying area and more than four feet of snowfall in the mountains at an altitude of 17,500 feet. In extreme circumstances, security force personnel are engaged in protecting the border from the last checkpoints. When the weather cleared on Monday, the security forces patrolled the border.

More than one foot of snowfall has also occurred in Dhaka and Bidang Chowki located at an altitude of more than 10,000 feet in Darma Valley. Due to the snowfall of October 2, 14 villages in the high Himalayan Darma valley and seven villages in the Beas valley have caused the bitter cold.

In both the valleys, people have also started harvesting palti, paffar, and other crops. People from both the valleys will start coming to the lower valley from the first week of November.

On October 2, there was snowfall in the Jyolicang, Nabhidhang, Om Parvat, Adi Kailash, and the famous Panchachuli peak of the Beas Valley as it rained in the lower valley. (ANI)
