Nawaz’s Supporters Bring Lion, Tiger To Lahore Rally

In an unprecedented event in Pakistan, the supporters of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) brought a lion and a tiger to the Nawaz Sharif-led Lahore rally on Tuesday, The News International reported.

It reported that the animals representing the party’s symbol were brought to the camps set up in the National Assembly (NA)-130 constituency to welcome former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. Scores of PML-N supporters took selfies with the lion and tiger locked in iron cages. The wild animals have been brought to multiple PML-N public gatherings in the past.

However, PML-N leader Marriyum Aurangzeb said on Nawaz’s instruction, a “real lion, brought by one of its supporters for the PML-N rally, has been returned.”

“Nawaz Sharif has instructed that no real lion or any other animal should be brought to any rally in Pakistan,” she said in a tweet.

The News International reported that Marriyum also said the PML-N supremo took strict notice of bringing a lion to the rally on Mohini Road and was directed to send the animal back immediately, after which the lion was sent back right away.

On Tuesday evening, Nawaz led a public rally in NA-130, from where he will contest general elections slated for February 8.

PML-N Chief Organiser Maryam Nawaz also participated in the rally, which will start from Mohini Road and go to Ameer Roor Malik Park from Kale Di Puli.

The rally will go from Malik Park to Saradar Chapel Chowk, via Moola Bakhsh Chowk, Ibrahim Road, Santnagar and Isalampura.

On Wednesday, Nawaz Sharif asserted that Pakistan faced a crisis following his ouster from the prime minister’s office, ARY News reported.

In a public gathering at Nankana Sahib, Sharif questioned the rationale behind imprisoning a prime minister who played a pivotal role in making Pakistan a nuclear state.

He alleged that five judges removed him from office for not accepting a salary from his son, leading to subsequent economic challenges in the country, as reported by ARY News.

Sharif pledged to bring about positive change in Nankana Sahib, outlining plans to transform the city into a model with the establishment of a boy’s degree college and a state-of-the-art cricket stadium. (ANI)

Pak: Massive Protests Over Inflated Electricity Bills

Following the surge in electricity bills carrying seven different levies, caused widespread protest in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, reported The News International.

The people participating in the protest blocked roads and torched the fresh bills. They said they were shocked to see multiple taxes included in their bills and unprecedentedly high rates for consumed units.

They torched the bills and vowed not to pay the charges until these were brought down to an affordable level, The News International reported.

These protests broke out in several parts of Peshawar. The angry power consumers carried their power bills received from Peshawar Electricity Supply Company for the month of July and came out on the streets in the provincial capital.

Additionally, they were holding placards with slogans against the Wapda, Pesco and the Pakistan government.

One of the protests was seen at the Anam Sanam Chowk in Gulbahar area. People protesting over there blocked the square for traffic to enter. Since the traffic was disrupted, people had to face difficulty in reaching their destinations.

The protestors condemned the rise in power tariff and said it was an all-time high, according to The News International. Adding to this, they said that seven different types of taxes and levies have been added to their electricity bills, including Withholding Income Tax.

The consumers also stressed that high inflation has made their lives miserable and the current rising electricity charges had left them shocked.

They also warned of using electricity without paying bills if the government did not take back the unprecedented hike in power charges, reported The News International.

Furthermore, the protestors complained that their jobs and businesses had been affected and their lives had become costlier. They added that the government was only interested in its own luxuries instead of providing relief to the masses.

They also said that the government officials in all the departments were enjoying free electricity and were heavily misusing electricity.

One of the protestors said, “I visited several offices today in the Wapda House, police department, district administration and Civil Secretariat and found air conditioners in every office whether anyone was present in the office or not. We cannot even think of switching on one air conditioner at home for the fear of heavy bills.”

“I have consumed only 200 electricity units and my current bills have reached Rs25,000, said Muhammad Yaqoob, a local resident, adding that it was beyond his capacity to pay the bills within due time.

Another citizen Muhammad Zubair Khan, from the Qamber area of Mingora, said his monthly salary was PKR 25,000 and Pesco had sent him a bill for Rs 27,000. He wondered how he would pay the power bill with his limited resources.

Abdul Rahim, president of All Malakand Traders Federation said, “We will launch an agitation in the entire province. The rulers should not put more burden on the shoulders of poor people, rather they should cut down spending.”

As the protests increased over the hiked power tariff bills against the power companies, the Islamabad Electric Power Supply Company (Iesco) asked the police to provide security to its offices reported the News International.

Earlier this week, several people gathered at the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir’s Rawalakot and torched thousands of electricity bills, Dawn reported.

The demonstration brushed aside a notification issued by the PoK government on Monday in its desperate attempt to defuse the situation.

The protest started over 150 days ago in the town to record protest against the “cruel electricity taxes, unavailability and increase in the prices of wheat flour and some other issues of public concern said the report.

A seven-member committee, comprising four cabinet members and three civil servants, was also formed by the government to look into the issue and give recommendations for its ultimate solution reported Dawn.

However, angry protesters in Rawalakot and elsewhere rejected what they called the “lollipop” by the government and made it clear that their agitation would continue as per their calendar until all unnecessary and cruel taxes were withdrawn and the tariff was brought on par with Gilgit-Baltistan.

Participants of the rally in Rawalakot, some of whom were also carrying placards, chanted slogans and torched around 7,000 electricity bills at Kutchery Chowk, reported Dawn. (ANI)

Pakistan's Faisalabad churches vandalised

Pak: Religious Leaders Seek Judicial Probe Into Jaranwala Violence

Pakistan’s Punjab former Minister for Human Rights and Minority Affairs Ijaz Alam Augustine along with various religious leaders presented facts of the Jalanwala tragedy and exposed the elements who made a deal with the oppressed victims, The News International reported on Sunday.

The former minister and leaders were speaking in a press conference where they demanded the setting up of a judicial commission headed by a High Court judge for a transparent investigation into the Jaranwala tragedy.

The leaders called for severe punishment of the perpetrators of the incident and those who made hate speeches and an apology to the state.

Ijaz Alam Augustine while addressing the press conference condemned the heinous incident and said that the Christian community is very sad all over the world. We have a question from the Punjab government when the miscreants first acted at 5 in the morning, why did the police and the administration reach the crime scene after sixteen hours?

“Why were the riots not stopped and why were the police absent? Churches were burnt in the presence of the police. We demand that the administration concerned be brought to justice. Why was a Christian Assistant Commissioner ‘suspended’?” Ijaz Alam emphasised that had the criminals involved in the incidents of Shanti Nagar, Joseph Colony and Gojra been punished, the Jaranwala tragedy might not have happened today.”

Chairman of Tolerance Movement Samson Salamat said, “My question is, why the chief minister has not yet gone to Jaranwala? He is meeting representatives of religious minorities in his office. The Christian community protested together with their Muslim brothers against the desecration of the Holy Quran in Sweden and Norway and sent a message to the world that we are all Pakistanis.”

Chairman Pakistan Minorities Alliance Tahir Naveed Chaudhry and Akmal Bhatti Advocate in their address seek the protection of the Christian community. They also embraced the establishment of an internal action committee and demanded legislation in the next parliament.

Shahid Rehmat, Chief Executive of Youth Development Foundation said, “We all have to ensure prevention of such incidents in the future.” He insisted on taking emergency measures to rebuild the homes of the Christian community. He said, “We all have to promote interfaith harmony among ourselves so that the path of those who spread hatred can be blocked”.

From the press conference, Pastor John AD, Bishop Sylvester Tahir Bhatti, Bishop Dominic Javed and Bishop Tauqeer Nasir also made short speeches and emphasized ensuring the safety of the Christian community and announced that the journey of peaceful protest will continue till the Christian community gets justice and protection.
