South Africa's Johannesburg Modi Rakhi

Women Members Of Indian Diaspora Tie Rakhi To Modi In Johannesburg

Women members of the Indian diaspora in South Africa’s Johannesburg tied ‘Rakhi’ to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as they welcomed him to the country on Tuesday.

Arya Samaj South Africa President Arthi Nanakchand Shanand and a member of the Indian community along with Dr Sarres Padayachee, an author and Cultural Custodian tied ‘Rakhi’ to the Prime Minister.

Out of the two, Padayachee is a South African citizen as she was born here.

Ahead of PM Modi’s arrival in South Africa, Arthi Nanakchand Shanand, President of Arya Samaj South Africa, earlier today had said that the PM sees the world as ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ -One earth, one family.

She said, “PM Modi is more like a father figure than a brother figure to us. I feel his presence here makes us feel that we belong…PM Modi sees the world as ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ -One earth, one family. With his learnings from the Vedas, he is going to make a big change in South Africa..”

Moreover, Padayachee, while speaking to ANI said, “We have the utmost respect for PM Modi ji because he has certainly contributed towards many changes that will benefit not only India but also South Africa.”

Not only the Indian community tied ‘Rakhi’ but Prime Minister Narendra Modi also received a very special spiritual welcome in South Africa today.

PM Modi arrived in South Africa earlier today, where he will attend the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg from August 22-24 at the invitation of the country’s president Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa.

PM Modi said that he looks forward to holding bilateral meetings with “some of the leaders present in Johannesburg”.

“BRICS has been pursuing a strong cooperation agenda across various sectors. We value that BRICS has become a platform for discussing and deliberating on issues of concern for the entire Global South, including development imperatives and reform of the multilateral system,” the PM said in a statement.

BRICS is a grouping of the world economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

The BRICS summit will be held from August 22-24. This will be PM Modi’s third visit to South Africa and the trip marks the 30th anniversary of the diplomatic relationship between India and South Africa.

This year’s BRICS is under the presidency of South Africa. The theme of this year’s summit is: “BRICS and Africa: Partnership for mutually accelerated growth, sustainable development and inclusive multilateralism.”

This will be the first in-person BRICS Summit after three consecutive years of virtual meetings owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. (ANI)

Modi Kicks Off His Campaigning

Elections 2024, Ahoy! Modi Kicks Off His Campaigning

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 90-minute speech from the ramparts of the 375-year-old Red Fort in Delhi, many in Indian media did stories on how long or short his speeches have been since 2014 when he made his first one (the longest, if you care to know, was 94 minutes in 2016; and the shortest, 56 minutes, was in 2017).

That sort of trivia may count for news in some circles but in the 90 minutes that he spoke, the Prime Minister covered much ground. And as the speech progressed it could, to many listeners, resemble the unfolding of an election campaign. The 2024 Parliamentary elections are barely eight months away and a careful listening of the Prime Minister’s speech on August 15 shows that he’s off the block already.

Early in the speech Modi referred to the communal violence in Manipur and the instances of atrocities such as the public dishonoring of women by a mob, and expressed solidarity with the people of the northeastern state that has been in turmoil for months. The Prime Minister had not publicly commented on Manipur until recently in Parliament.

Soon, though, he moved on to his government’s achievements and initiatives in various sectors, such as health, education, infrastructure, defense, agriculture, and social welfare. He also announced the launch of the Vishwakarma Yojana for barbers and goldsmiths with an initial spending of Rs. 13,000-15,000 crore. Could that be a move to woo the backward castes and the poor, who form a significant vote bank in India? In a jab at the Opposition, chiefly the Congress party, Modi also called for uprooting the evils of “corruption and dynasty politics” to safeguard the nation’s economic development.

The politics in Modi’s speech was unmistakable. While Modi referred to how India had achieved independence after 1000 years of rule by outsiders–a probable reference to the Mughal invasion of the subcontinent, followed by the British rule–and mentioned the names of Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, B.R.Ambedkar, Jaiprakash Narayan, Sri Aurobindo, and Swami Vivekananda, as being crucial contributors to freedom and nation-building, but carefully left out any reference to India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru or the Nehru-Gandhi family of which Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader, is a descendant.

Gandhi’s popularity has been getting a boost. In many circles, he is seen as a hero: he got thrown out of parliament after he was convicted in a defamation case (charged with maligning the “Modi” surname in an election speech in 2019) but was reinstated following a Supreme Court order that went in his favor.

Last year, Gandhi led a mass movement, Bharat Jodo Yatra, and walked from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu to Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, covering a distance of about 4,000 km (2,485 miles) in 146 days. It was aimed at uniting Indians against the “divisive politics” of the ruling (Modi’s) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and protesting against the economic and social problems faced by the country.

These have served to boost Gandhi’s image after people had begun doubting his leadership abilities following the Congress’ repeated poor performance in elections–the 2019 parliamentary polls and in various state elections since then. Modi and the BJP will not want that to happen.

Modi also made lighthearted mention of his desire to deliver next year’s Independence Day speech, if he had the blessings of his countrymen, a clear indication that he was intent on winning and serving a third term as Prime Minister.

In the next election, the Opposition strategy, although still being formed, will likely be a bit different. Most of India’s major Opposition parties have allied in a united front, known as the acronym INDIA and expanding into a mouthful, Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, and propose to nominate one joint candidate in most constituencies to take on the BJP candidate. Consequently the BJP will likely tweak its own strategy to combat this.

As always, India’s next election will be interesting to follow. And the contest began last week–from the ramparts of Delhi’s Red Fort.

India’s go-getter CJI makes a difference

Since November 2022, after he became the Chief Justice of India’s Supreme Court, Dhananjay Y. Chandrachud, 63, there has been a string of achievements that can be attributed to him.

First, the Supreme Court has been able to dispose of cases faster under Chandrachud. For years, in any given period the Supreme Court would have more cases filed than could be disposed of by it. But, during Chandrachud’s ongoing tenure that has reversed. Since he took over, 14,209 cases have been disposed of against the 13,764 new cases filed.

Some of the measures that have contributed to the speedy disposal of cases include the introduction of virtual hearings, e-filings, live streaming of hearings, the use of AI, and other dispute resolution mechanisms; and, in addition, the process of listing petitions has been streamlined.

But it is the landmark judgments that he has presided over that have upheld the constitutional values of democracy, secularism, human rights, and social justice. Some of these include the verdicts on the validity of the Citizenship Amendment Act, the abolition of triple talaq, the protection of personal data, the regulation of hate speech and fake news, the recognition of transgender rights, and the decriminalization of euthanasia,

Chandrachud has also been vocal in his dissenting opinions. For instance, he dissented from the majority judgment that upheld the validity of the electoral bonds scheme, which he argued was a threat to transparency and accountability in political funding. He has also advocated for increasing the judge-to-population ratio, filling up the vacancies in the judiciary, enhancing the diversity and representation of women and marginalized groups in the judicial appointments. Chandrachud is the CJI of the moment. He is the top judge the country badly needs.

Doping in the Indian sports world

Dutee Chand, 27, is an Indian sprinter and current national champion in the women’s 100 metres event. She is the first Indian to win a gold medal in 100m race in a global competition and the third Indian woman to ever qualify for the Women’s 100 metres event at the Summer Olympic Games. She is also India’s first athlete to openly come out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. But Chand has also been banned by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) for four years after failing two dope tests for selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs), which are non-steroidal substances often used to treat osteoporosis, anaemia, and wound healing in patients.

Dutee recently claimed that she will challenge the ban as the consumption of the substance was unintentional and on the advice of her physiotherapist.

Doping, however, is a serious problem in Indian sport, as India is ranked third in doping, according to the latest World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) report released in 2021. With 152 instances of doping across various sports disciplines, the country fares only marginally better than  Russia (167) and Italy (157).

On the list of those who failed doping tests in India, are not only seasoned pros but also once promising junior athletes and sportspersons. On this list are not only seasoned pros but once promising Indian juniors. Doping refers to the practice of using banned chemical substances, known as performance enhancing drugs (PEDs), by athletes. The primary goal is to enhance performance, but it also poses health risks and ethical issues.

A quick history of India’s moon mission

As Chandrayaan-3, the latest of India’s lunar exploration missions,  last week sent new images of the surface of the moon from up close as it nears its landing spot near the moon’s south pole, here’s a recap of India’s history with its moon missions.

Chandrayaan is a series of lunar exploration missions launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The first mission, Chandrayaan-1, was launched in 2008. It discovered the presence of water molecules on the moon’s surface. The second mission, Chandrayaan-2, was launched in 2019 and was scheduled to land on the moon. It consisted of an orbiter, a lander, and a rover. But things went wrong and the lander-rover crashed on the moon. The orbiter continues to orbit and observe the moon even today.

The ongoing mission, Chandrayaan-3, was launched in July this year and is expected to soft land near the south pole of the moon on August 23. If successful, India will be the first country to land near the lunar south pole and the fourth country to achieve a soft landing on the moon after the US, the former Soviet Union, and China.

Why are there so many fires around the world? A roundup.

In recent months devastating fires causing harm to both lives as well as the environment have broken out in various parts of the world, including Greece, Hawaii, Tenerife, and Canada. The fires have happened all at the same time but perhaps not for the exact same reason.

Wildfires can be caused by many factors, such as many factors, such as weather, climate, vegetation, human activity, and lightning.

The fires in Greece are mainly driven by a heatwave that swept through Europe in July, creating record-breaking temperatures and dry conditions that made the vegetation more flammable. The fires have hit several islands and regions, such as Lesbos, Evia, Attica, and Peloponnese. Some of the fires may have been started by arsonists or negligence, such as discarded cigarettes or unattended campfires.

In Hawaii, the fires were mainly caused by human activity, such as agricultural burning, fireworks, power lines, or vehicles. The fires have been worsened by strong winds, low humidity, and drought. The fires in Hawaii hit several islands and areas, such as Maui, Oahu, Kauai, and Big Island. Some of the fires have threatened homes, businesses, and natural resources, such as forests and wildlife.

In Tenerife, the fires were mainly caused by natural factors, such as lightning strikes or volcanic activity. The fires have been worsened by high temperatures, low rainfall, and strong winds that have created a tinderbox situation on the island. The fires have affected several towns and villages, such as La Esperanza, Arafo, and Candelaria. Some of the residents have been evacuated, bringing their animals with them.

In Canada, the fires are mainly caused by climate change, which has increased the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, such as heatwaves, droughts, storms, and lightning. The fires have been fueled by the accumulation of deadwood and organic matter that have dried out due to the lack of precipitation and snowpack. Several Canadian provinces and territories, such as British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and Yukon, have been affected by the fires, which have endangered communities and infrastructure.

We Must Be Ready To Prevent, Prepare, Respond To Next Health Emergency: Modi At G-20

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday urged the citizens to be ready to prevent, prepare and respond to the next health emergency.

In a video message at the G20 Health Ministers meeting being held in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar, PM Modi said, “This is especially important in today’s interconnected world. As we saw during the pandemic, health issues in one part of the world can affect all other parts of the world in a very short time.”

The G20 Health Ministers’ meeting under India’s G20 Presidency is being held in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar from August 17-19. Notably, India assumed the presidency of the G20 on 1 December 2022.

While explaining the importance of holistic health, he said that the global celebration of the International Day of Yoga is a testament to the universal desire for holistic health.

He further noted that Gujarat is an important step in establishing the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Center for Traditional Medicine in Jamnagar.

“The holding of the WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine, along with the G20 Health Ministers meeting, will intensify efforts to harness its potential. It should be our joint effort to build a global repository for traditional medicine,” he added.

PM Modi further said that health and the environment are organically linked. He added that clean air, safe drinking water, sufficient nutrition, and secure shelter are major factors of health.

“The steps taken to address the threat of Anti-Microbial Resistance are also commendable. AMR is a grave risk to global public health and all pharmaceutical advancements so far. I am also glad that the G20 Health Working Group has prioritized ‘One Health’.”

He emphasized that the vision of ”One Earth, One Health” envisages good health for the entire ecosystem, including humans, animals, plants and the environment. “This integrated view carries Gandhiji’s message of not leaving anyone behind,” he said.

Additionally, he stressed the digital solutions and technological innovations to make our efforts equitable and inclusive. Nowadays, people from far and wide can receive quality care through tele-medicine.

“India’s national platform, e-Sanjeevani, has facilitated 140 million telehealth consultations to date. India’s COWIN platform successfully facilitated the largest vaccination drive in human history. It managed the delivery of more than 2.4 billion vaccine doses and the real-time availability of globally verifiable vaccination certificates,” he said.

Such global initiatives on digital health will bring together various digital health initiatives on a common platform.

“This initiative will allow countries in the Global South to close the gap in healthcare delivery. It will take us one step closer to our goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage,” PM Modi added. (ANI)

India Making Remarkable Progress On Achieving Equitable, Collective Prosperity: Modi

Stating that India is making remarkable progress on achieving equitable and collective prosperity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that the weighted mean income has made a commendable leap in the last 9 years.

Taking to the social media platform Linkedin, PM Modi cited two research pieces of SBI and a noted journalist Anil Padmanabhan, saying that these analyses shed light on something that should make us very happy.

“Recently, I came across two insightful research pieces, which would interest all those passionate about India’s economy: one from SBI Research and another by Mr. Anil Padmanabhan, a noted journalist. These analyses shed light on something that should make us very happy- That India is making remarkable progress on achieving equitable and collective prosperity. I thought of sharing some interesting snippets from these research works,” PM said in the post.

He said, “The research by SBI has pointed out (based on ITR returns) that the weighted mean income has made a commendable leap in the last 9 years, from Rs 4.4 lakh in AY14 to Rs 13 lakh in FY23.”

“Mr. Padmanabhan’s study of ITR data suggests a widening tax base, across various income brackets. Each bracket has seen a minimum threefold increase in tax filings, some even achieving a nearly fourfold surge,” he added.

The Prime Minister observed that the research highlights the positive performance, in terms of increase in Income tax filings, across states.

“Further, the research highlights the positive performance, in terms of increase in Income tax filings, across states. When comparing ITR filings between 2014 and 2023, the data paints a promising picture of increased tax participation across all states.

For instance, ITR data analysis shows the state of Uttar Pradesh has emerged as one of the top-performing states when it comes to ITR filings. In June 2014, Uttar Pradesh reported a modest 1.65 lakh ITR filings, but by June 2023, this figure had skyrocketed to an impressive 11.92 lakh,” he said.

PM Modi also said that, according to the SBI report, the northeastern states– Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland– have exhibited admirable growth in ITR filings in the last 9 years.

“The SBI report also brings forth an encouraging note, highlighting that our smaller states and that too from the Northeast, namely Manipur, Mizoram, and Nagaland, have exhibited an admirable growth of over 20 per cent in ITR filings in the last 9 years,” the post read.

“This shows that not only have incomes risen but so has compliance. And, this is a manifestation of the spirit of trust which the people have in our Government,” it added.

The Prime Minister in his post noted that we are on course towards fulfilling our dream ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047.

“These findings not only reflect our collective efforts but also reiterate our potential as a nation. Growing prosperity augurs well for national progress. Undoubtedly, we are standing at the cusp of a new era of economic prosperity and are on course towards fulfilling our dream ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047,” PM Modi said in the post. (ANI)

Excited To Be In India, Will Meet Modi Today: US Congressman McCormick

US Representative Congressman Rich McCormick, who is part of the American Congressional delegation visiting India, on Wednesday said that he is looking forward to his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi today.

“I’m really excited about today, we’re going to meet Prime Minister Modi and several other dignitaries and once again continue to advance the relationship between our two great countries”, McCormick said in an exclusive interview with ANI.

McCormick who represents Georgia’s 6th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives also hailed the recent visit of PM Modi to America stating “there’s never been a better time for developing these relationships.”

The largest democracy in the world coming to visit America. And now we’re here in force to have a bipartisan group of congressmen to continue to develop this relationship that I think it’s going to be essential in the future”, said McCormick.

Speaking about the India-US relationship and threats from China, the Congressman said that it is important to develop a strong relationship.

“We continue to develop trust given the fact that we’ve had a long history of coordinated efforts, but this is going to be something unique as we go into this next generation of threats, especially with the proximity to China and other countries. Developing a strong relationship strategically, economically and militarily so that we can trust each other into the future”, McCormick said.

Hailing India’s economic growth, the congressman said that it will be interesting to see India become a more powerful ally.

There’s a huge military industry here in India that I think is going to be partnering with this in the future which is going to help not only the economy but also the strength of India. We spend roughly over 800 billion on our military, and India’s closer to 60 billion. But as India grows its economy which is gonna grow in tremendous ways in the next decade. It’s gonna be interesting to see India become a more powerful ally. It’s able to defend itself against anybody which is going to be great for both countries”, said McCormick.

That only speaks well to India’s perseverance and productivity, creativity, hard work, intelligence, all the great things. It’s a testimony to the Indian people, which I think is great for reputation, great for relationships. Look forward to developing that as we continue because it benefits both countries”, he said.

“You have 200,000 students right now in America, from India, learning incredible skills and technologies that they can bring back here to this country to continue to build their industry which is needed in both countries when it comes to developing economies”, he said. (ANI)

Har Ghar Tiranga

88 MN Selfies Uploaded On ‘Har Ghar Tiranga Website’ Till Noon On I-Day

More than 88 million selfies of people from across the country with the national flag were uploaded on the central government’s Har Ghar Tiranga website till 12 noon on Tuesday under the three-day campaign being run since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s fresh clarion call on Sunday.

The home page of Har Ghar Tiranga website (tiranga.com) shows an option to upload selfie with tiranga, and mentions that 8,81,21,591 (88 million) selfies with the tricolour were uploaded till 12 noon on Tuesday. The website is asking the public to hoist a flag at their house from August 13 to 15 — the three-day ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign to celebrate the 77th Independence Day.

There are two options on the home page of the Har Ghar Tiranga website to upload a selfie with a flag and digital Tiranga. Scrolling down, the user will see photos of Union ministers, actors and sportspersons with the Indian flag that including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, former cricketer Parthiv Patel, actor Anupam Kher and singer Kailash Kher among others.

On the occasion of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, celebrating 75 years of India’s independence, PM Modi launched the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign on July 22 last year. On Sunday, the Prime Minister again urged people through a social media post to change the display picture on their social media accounts to the Tricolour in the spirit of the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign.

In order to promote this campaign, PM Modi on Sunday also changed the display picture of his social media accounts to the national flag.

As part of various events planned for the whole week, union ministers participated in the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’’ bike rally at the Pragati Maidan area in Delhi on Friday. The rally, which is the second edition of the campaign, was flagged off by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar and also proceeded on Mathura Road, Bhairon Road, India Gate, along with the Pragati Maidan tunnel.

In a video earlier shared by the ANI, Kishan Reddy was seen taking the handle of the bike and riding, while Anurag Thakur sat behind holding the Indian flag in his hand. Chants of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ were raised during the rally. Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje, who hails from Karnataka, was also seen participating in the bike rally.

Meanwhile, Independence Day was celebrated across the country with the PM unfurling the national flag at the Red Fort on Tuesday morning in the presence of various dignitaries, Ministers and school children among others. (ANI)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Modi: Borders Far More Secure, Calls For Young, Battle-Ready Armed Forces

Addressing countrymen from the ramparts of the Red Fort for the 10th time since taking the country’s highest office in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the borders were “far more secure than ever before”.

He also underlined the need for “mega reforms” in the Indian armed forces.

“Today our borders are far more secure. I extend my heartfelt wishes to my jawans, who are patrolling, keeping vigil, and securing our borders, as well as other security forces on our 77th Independence Day,” PM Modi said.

Underlining the need to usher in urgent reforms in the armed forces in view of evolving security challenges, PM Modi said, “Our armed forces should be young and battle-ready. They should be skilled and equipped to wage wars. The process to bring in reforms in the armed forces is already underway.”

The remarks assume significance as India has been locked in a protracted military standoff with China since May 2020 when troopers of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) allegedly tried to alter the status quo of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) at Galwan Valley in Arunachal Pradesh.

Indian troops thwarted a similar alleged misadventure by the Chinese forces at Yang Tse near Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh in December 2022.

Before addressing fellow countrymen on the 77th Independence Day, PM Modi paid floral tributes at the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat.

Earlier, on Tuesday, PM Modi was received by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and other dignitaries on his arrival at the Red Fort and he began his customary address to the nation after raising the tricolour.

“Best wishes on Independence Day. We pay homage to our great freedom fighters and reaffirm our commitment to fulfilling their vision. Jai Hind!,” Prime Minister Modi posted on X, formerly Twitter, before arriving at the Red Fort.

This year’s Independence Day will culminate the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ celebrations, which were launched by Prime Minister Modi from Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, Gujarat on March 12, 2021, and will usher the country into ‘Amrit Kaal’. (ANI)

Modi Partition Horrors Remembrance Day

Modi Recalls Pain Of People On ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday remembered those who lost their lives during the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947.

“Partition Horrors Remembrance Day is an occasion to reverently remember those Indians whose lives were sacrificed in the partition of the country. Along with this, this day also reminds us of the suffering and struggle of those who were forced to bear the brunt of displacement. I salute all such people,” PM Modi said in a tweet in Hindi.

PM Modi in 2021, announced that August 14 will be observed as ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day’, to remind the nation of the sufferings and sacrifices of Indians during the partition in 1947.

India attained its freedom from British rule on August 15, 1947.

Independence Day, which is celebrated on 15th August every year, is a joyous and proud occasion for any nation; however, with the sweetness of freedom came also the trauma of partition.

The birth of the newly independent Indian nation was accompanied by violent pangs of partition that left permanent scars on millions of Indians.

The partition caused the largest migrations in human history affecting about 20 million people. Millions of families had to abandon their ancestral villages/towns/cities and were forced to find a new life as refugees. (ANI)
