Committed To Peaceful Solution Of Border Row: India

India and China are in touch with each other through military and diplomatic channels to resolve the ongoing situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday.

“Both India and China are in regular touch through military and diplomatic channels to resolve the situation. This was also the consensus when the two Defence Ministers met,” MEA spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said during virtual weekly briefing.

“As we have reiterated several times in the past, Indian side is committed to resolving the current situation on India-China border through peaceful negotiations,” he said.

Chinese soldiers fired in the air while attempting to close in on Indian positions across the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh on Monday night, the Indian Army said on Tuesday adding that Chinese troops have been “blatantly violating agreements and carrying out aggressive manoeuvres.”

In a statement, the Army said on Tuesday that the Chinese troops were “attempting to close-in with one of our forward positions along the LAC and when dissuaded by own troops, People’s Liberation Army (PLA) soldiers fired a few rounds in the air in an attempt to intimidate.”

India recently outflanked China by taking control of strategic height near Pangong Lake’s southern bank. It thwarted an attempt by the Chinese soldiers to transgress into Indian areas near the southern bank of Pangong Tso near Chushul in Ladakh.

India and China have been engaged in a standoff since April-May over the transgressions by the Chinese Army in multiple areas including the Finger area, Galwan Valley, Hot springs and Kongrung Nala. The situation worsened after 20 Indian soldiers were killed in violent clashes with Chinese troops in Galwan Valley in June.

Last Friday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh told his Chinese counterpart General Wei Fenghe on the sidelines of the SCO dialogue in Moscow that attempts by Chinese troops to unilaterally alter the status quo along the LAC was in violation of the bilateral agreements, and Beijing should work with New Delhi for complete disengagement from all friction areas including Pangong Tso. Indian Army Occupies Heights Overlooking PLA Positions

Indian Army has occupied heights overlooking the Chinese Army positions at Finger 4 along Pangong lake.

The operations to occupy the heights were carried out along with the pre-emptive actions to occupy heights near the Southern bank of Pangong Tso around August-end, sources said on Thursday.

“Indian Army has occupied heights overlooking the Chinese Army positions at Finger 4 along the Pangong Tso. These operations were carried out along with the pre-emptive actions to occupy heights near the Southern bank of Pangong Tso around August-end,” a source told ANI.

Sources said the Chinese Army had occupied the heights near the Finger 4 but the Indian Army has now occupied the heights which overlook the Chinese positions at heights including the Green top.

The Chinese have been sitting at Finger 4 from around April-May timeframe but have refused to disengage from there and other friction points in eastern Ladakh sector.

In another development, armies of India and China held interactions at Brigade Commander-level and Commanding Officer-level in eastern Ladakh on Thursday which are aimed at keeping the communication lines open between the two sides.

“Armies of India and China today held interactions at Brigade Commander-level and Commanding Officer-level in Eastern Ladakh. Interactions are aimed at keeping the communication lines open between the two sides,” Indian Army sources said.

JEE Main

‘I Am Happy, Govt Decided To Hold JEE Main’

Shreya Vyas (18), an aspiring architect, narrates her anxiety before taking JEE Main and the unprecedented safety measure at her examination centre in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh

When the pandemic first broke out, no one had anticipated that it would last so long and things would change so much. But nearly six months into the pandemic, we students have made peace with the fact that we will have to move ahead with the uncertainty.

I wish to study architecture post high school and though there is a National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA), one needs to rank well in Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Main for admission into a reputed college. This year, I appeared for my Class 12 Board exams just before the lockdown was announced. First, our results were postponed and later there was much confusion about holding of JEE Main. I am glad the government decided in favour of holding JEE-NEET.

I took JEE on September 1. Coronavirus made it different this year. I live near the Cantonment Area in Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh) and my exam centre was quite far. Earlier, vehicles would be allowed right up to the gate of an exam centre but due to contraction fear this year, we had to walk to the centre from quite a distance.

There was also heavy police deployment to ensure social distancing measures. A temperature check was done right at the gate before allowing us inside. We were asked to take off our masks and replace them with new masks at the exam centre.

From the main gate of the campus to the exam hall, we had to sanitise our hands three times. Even the pen we used for the exams were provided by the centre. The exam halls had also been thoroughly sanitised.

I believe we need to be cautious but not be scared. Having taken all prescribed hygiene measures, I wasn’t scared about the pandemic as much as about faring well in the exams. While the preparation for the exams were stressful given the confusion before the exams, I heaved a sigh of relief at the end of my exams. I am passionate about architecture and thus had studied really well for the exams.

It is in the hands of our generation to rebuild our society ravaged by the pandemic. I believe that because of Covid-19, the field of architecture too will see major changes and we will have to adapt quickly to those changes. We may have to go back to the architecture of old times where natural light would flow in, where houses and offices were extensions of people’s personalities. The lockdown has taught us all the importance of our homes; how these four walls can either turn into a safe haven or a prison.

During lockdown Shreya painted wall of a relative’s house

I am now taking another exam on September 12 and I hope to get through a good college and follow my dreams. Thanks to my banker parents, my childhood was spent shuttling between cities/towns and thus the idea of one particular rooted space that I can call home appeals deeply to me. In my free time, I even painted one whole wall of a relative’s house by myself. That’s how much I love the idea of housing. Architects ‘build’ houses, people ‘build’ homes; together we ‘build’ societies.

Raghuvansh Prasad Quits RJD Ahead Of Bihar Polls

Weeks ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) got a big jolt with former Union Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh resigning from the party on Thursday.

Singh, who is considered close to RJD founder Lalu Prasad Yadav’s family, is currently admitted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi where he is undergoing treatment for some health complication. With a handwritten note, Singh conveyed the decision of his resignation to the RJD founder.

According to reports, Singh was unhappy with talks of former Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) MP from Vaishali, Rama Singh, joining the RJD.

Earlier in June Singh had resigned from the post of the National Vice President of the RJD.

He had then raised questions over the style of work of Bihar RJD President Jagdanand Singh. (ANI)

Taiwan’s Stern Message To China: Don’t Cross The Line

Taiwan on Thursday warned China not to “cross the line” saying that it wants peace but will defend its people.

“Don’t cross the line. China again flew fighter jets into Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone today. Make no mistake, Taiwan wants peace but we will defend our people,” Vice President of Taiwan, Lai Ching-Te said in a tweet.

During US Health Secretary Alex Azar’s historic visit to Taiwan last month, China deployed fighter jets that briefly crossed the midline of the Taiwan Strait, South China Morning Post had reported citing Taiwan’s Defence Ministry.

The ministry had said it had tracked the PLA fighters with its land-based anti-aircraft missiles and had “strongly driven them out”.

The US has repeatedly criticised China and urged nations to push back against the Asian country, saying that Beijing is bullying its neighbours and militarise features in the South China Sea, rather than helping the world during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Amid the threat of China endangering Taiwan’s security, the country’s defence ministry had late last month released a video showing troops firing anti-aircraft, anti-tank and anti-ship missiles in defence of the island against a mock invasion from across the Taiwan Strait, South China Morning Post had reported.

While releasing the video, the ministry reportedly issued a warning to China saying that the latter should not underestimate the island nation’s capability to defend itself.

South China Morning Post had quoted the ministry as saying, “The most egotistical country can thoughtlessly provoke a war and the most ignorant government can be caught in the flames of war.”

The ministry had said that repeated provocations by China’s People’s Liberation Army will no longer work. (ANI)

Rafale Fighter Jets Get Inducted In Indian Air Force

Rafale’s induction could not have happened at a more opportune time considering the ongoing security situation and it also marks the operational induction of the jets, Indian Air Force Chief Air Chief RKS Bhadauria said on Thursday.

The Air Chief was speaking after the induction of the five Rafale aircraft which arrived on July 27 at Ambala Air Force Station int the Indian Air Force’s 17 Squadron ‘Golden Arrows’ today.

Bhadauria said that the five aircraft have been in an “overdrive to operationalize” ever since their arrival.

“Within this time they have already flown and familiarized with our operational environment and have undergone intense integrated training with our other combat fleets, including firing of advanced weapons. Therefore, this formal induction ceremony today also marks the operational induction of the aircraft in the IAF. They are good to go and deliver,” Bhadauria said.

The IAF chief thanked the Indian government for negotiating the deal, bringing it to a fruitful conclusion and the French government, Air Force, and industry for ensuring delivery of the jets and training of the pilots.

He also thanked the French Air Force for their support, “including the tankers they provided for a single hop long ferry in order to rapidly ferry the aircraft back home.”

Bhadauria said that while Airforce station, Ambala, is the oldest station of the IAF would now be home to the newest aircraft of the IAF inventory and said that it was “adding a new chapter in Ambala and IAF’s glorious history.”

“Undoubtedly this aircraft induction the IAF immense operational capability but would become a crucial milestone in the growth of our strategic relationship,” he said.

The IAF chief said that the hard work and professionalism displayed by the personnel in order to operationalize the aircraft quickly were commendable and added that it would need to continue as the rest of the aircraft, ground, and aircrew arrive.

“I have no doubts that the aircraft capabilities combined with the commitment and the zeal of the Golden Arrows would make a lethal combination and I expect the Golden Arrows to intimidate and dominate whenever and wherever employed,” he said.

Earlier, water cannon salute was given to the five Rafale aircraft at the Indian Air Force (IAF) base, Ambala during the induction ceremony.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Minister of the Armed Forces of France Florence Parly, among others, also witnessed the traditional ‘Sarva Dharma Puja’ at the Rafale induction ceremony. (ANI)

Pakistan Court Declares Nawaz Proclaimed Offender

A Pakistan accountability court has indicted former President Asif Ali Zardari and former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani in connection with the Toshakhana (gift depository) case and declared former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif a proclaimed offender in the matter.

Accountability court Judge Asghar Ali in Islamabad also framed charges against Omni Group chairman Anwar Majeed and his son, Abdul Ghani Majeed in the case, The Express Tribune reported.

In the case, Sharif and Zardari have been accused by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) of illegally retaining expensive vehicles gifted to them by various foreign countries and dignitaries instead of depositing them in the Toshakhana.

According to the country’s top anti-corruption body, Gilani, during his tenure as Prime Minister, facilitated Zardari in retaining the vehicles. The NAB said Zardari and Sharif retained the vehicles “against a nominal payment of 15 per cent of their total value through dishonest and illegal means for their personal benefit and interest”.

Zardari, Gilani and the father-son duo of Omani group pleaded not guilty to the charges in connection to the case. On the other hand, Sharif was declared a proclaimed offender after his case was separated from other suspects.

The accountability court sought details of Sharif’s movable and immovable properties within seven days. It observed that the former Prime Minister’s properties will be frozen if he failed to appear before the court.

Gilani objected to the indictment, asserting he never carried out an action against the rules.

“Only a summary (for allowing the retention of vehicles) that came according to the law was approved. Had the summary been wrong, it would not have been moved,” he was quoted as saying.

In response, the accountability court judge told him that action will be initiated as per law. “We are not yet discussing the merits of the case, or how the summary was moved and approved. You have to tell this to the court during the trial,” he said.

The court then fixed September 24 as the next date of hearing.

Earlier, the court had accepted NAB’s decision to seize two BMWs and a Lexus from Zardari and a Mercedes from Sharif, according to The Express Tribune.

The NAB said Zardari had received expensive cars as a gift from Libya and the UAE, during his tenure as the country’s President, but illegally retained them instead of depositing them in the Tosakhana. (ANI)

Army Junks Reports Of Vacating Villages Near LAC

Indian Army on Wednesday junked the media reports of villages being vacated near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) amid border tension and termed it malicious.

Public Relations Officer, Defence, Tezpur suggested people of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam not to pay attention to the rumours.

“The news of vacation of villages near LAC are fake and malicious. The public of Arunachal Pradesh & Assam are advised not to pay heed to such rumours and get all news confirmed by authorities before retweeting it,” PRO, Defence, Tezpur tweeted.

The clarification came after some media reports said that villagers near the McMahon Line in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh have vacated their villages amid border tension at the India-China border in Ladakh.

Activists Slam Disney For Filming Mulan In Xinjiang

Rushan Abbas, an Uyghur-American activist, has hit out at Disney over its choice to film several scenes of the movie ‘Mulan’ in northwestern China’s Xinjiang, saying it is tacit approval of the Chinese government’s brutal campaign against the Uyghurs.

In a video statement, Abbas, whose sister went missing two years ago, wondered how Disney got permission to film the movie in a place where there are several restrictions and said the Chinese regime values money over human lives.

“The issues raised by Disney’s choice to film in a land stained by China’s genocide has serious implications for the entire global community. As an Uyghur Muslim, I am horrified that the destruction of my people is being overlooked because of China’s blood money. Many individuals are already complicit in this genocide by using the products made by Uyghur slaves and now by the ways that Disney gives tacit approval of the Chinese regime’s actions,” she said.

Abbas, who herself is from Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, wondered whether the Disney crew passed by the concentration camp, where her sister is believed to be held by authorities.

“My own sister, a retired medical doctor has been detained since 2018. This week is the two-year anniversary of her disappearance. We have no news of her all these times. When I see the news about Disney’s Mulan, I cannot help but wonder if Disney crews passed by the concentration camp where she is being held,” she said.

Rushan Abbas has been living in the US since 1989.

She remarked, “I want to ask Disney how they managed to secure filming rights in one of the most restricted areas in the world while I cannot even get a word from the Chinese authorities about my sister. The answer is, of course, that the Chinese regime values money over human lives, and we must not be complicit in this ideology. Disney should not try to make a profit out of this.”

Disney has come under fire for shooting in Xinjiang province, the region where the Chinese government is accused of carrying out a brutal campaign of repression against Uyghur Muslims.

Abbas said the movie’s lead actor, Liu Yifei, spoke against freedom and used the platform to back the Chinese Communist Party’s “totalitarian brutality”.

“The film Mulan and the circumstances surrounding its release are extremely distressing to the millions of Uyghurs across the world. If we are truly committed to the values of humanity and to justice, we must carefully evaluate our complicity. A story like Mulan, with its themes of courage and heroism, is completely undermined by the betrayal of integrity. I call on Disney to make this right and to the entire world to demand action,” she added.

The movie, slated for release across China on September 11, garnered controversy after Disney thanked Turpan Public Security Bureau and the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China’s “Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region” Committee in the film credits, which are Chinese government entities directly involved in mass internment of Uyghurs and others, said the East Turkistan National Awakening Movement (ETNAM), a Washington-based Uyghur group.

The activist called on the international community, especially Islamic countries, to not overlook China’s crimes against the Uyghurs, saying the situation of the ethnic community is “incredibly dire”.

“I am especially calling on the Islamic countries not to overlook China’s crimes and the war they are deliberately waging on Islam by rewriting the Holy Quran, and by outlawing all normal practices of our faith. The current situation of the Uyghurs is incredibly dire. We are crying out for help before this evil overtakes the entire world. The calamity of the Uyghurs will befall the entire world if this genocide is not stopped,” she further said.

Detailed locations of as many as 15 detention camps for Uyghurs have been unearthed in Turpan city of the northwest Chinese province of Xinjiang, the region where several scenes of Mulan were filmed, according to ETNAM.

The group has also called on the people across the world to boycott the movie and demanded Disney to cancel its screenings as soon as possible.

Last December, China had claimed that everyone in the so-called “re-education” concentration camps across Xinjiang had “graduated”. However, these concentration camps and prisons are still operating based on the satellite images seen from March to July this year.

China has been criticised globally for cracking down on the Uyghurs by sending them to mass detention camps, interfering in their religious activities and sending members of the community to undergo some form of forceful re-education or indoctrination. (ANI)
