For Power, Nitish Can Join Hands With Tejashwi: Chirag

Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) President Chirag Paswan on Thursday took a jibe at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and said that, if needed, Kumar would bow before Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav after the declaration of Bihar Assembly poll results.

Paswan, who has chosen to plough a lonely furrow in the ongoing polls, also said that Kumar is “greedy for power”.

“Now you are bowing before the same Prime Minister whom you used to unabashedly criticise. This shows his love and greed for power. Post-November 10, if needed he may be seen bowing before Tejashwi,” he said in a press conference here.

The Jamui MP also said that if an investigation is done on the alcohol ban then Nitish Kumar will be in jail.

“Where is the black money generated from alcohol sale is going? The chief minister needs to answer,” he said.

On the onion hurling incident at Nitish Kumar, the LJP chief said, “Whenever public asks him a question then he says keep throwing, keep throwing but we don’t support this act. The Chief Minister should listen to their problem.”

Paswan also asked the Janta Dal (United) chief about the money which is given as a relief package for floods and the next government will investigate it as well.

He also remarked that despite having the double engine government why the Bihar chief minister couldn’t deliver on the promises made to the public.

Paswan said that it is important not to vote for Nitish Kumar to stop the migration of the people from Bihar.

“Your one vote to JDU will push Bihar into destruction,” he said.

Bihar voted in the second phase of state assembly elections on Tuesday. Voting in the third phase will take place on November 7 and counting of votes will be held on November 10. (ANI)

Biden Inches Ahead, Needs To Pocket Nevada, Arizona

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden is edging towards a victory over incumbent President Donald Trump in the fierce battle of US Presidential elections with 253 projected Electoral College votes.

Biden needs 17 more votes to win the race as counting is underways in key states including Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Arizona, according to New York Times projections.

US President Donald Trump, despite winning the big states of Florida, North Carolina, currently has only 214 votes, according to a tally by New York Times.

In a last-ditch effort, Trump campaign has filed a lawsuit in Pennsylvania, challenging the state Supreme Court’s decision to allow officials to count ballots received as late as three days after Election Day if they were postmarked November 3 or before.

Addressing his supporters on Wednesday, Biden said he “believes” he will win. He flipped Arizona and Wisconsin while taking California, Washington, New York and Illinois.

With narrow wins in Wisconsin and Michigan called on Wednesday afternoon, Biden has flipped two of the three northern industrial states that handed Trump the White House in 2016.

Nevada, which has only 6 electoral votes, has also become important as Biden needs 17 more votes. Vice President Joseph R Biden leads President Trump in the state, but by less than one percentage point.

With millions of votes yet to be counted across several key states, Biden is holding narrow leads in Arizona and Nevada. If he can hold those states, the former vice president could win the election even without Pennsylvania.

On Wednesday, Trump claimed victory prematurely and continued to falsely claim ballots counted after Election Day signal malfeasance. He takes Florida, Ohio, Iowa, Missouri and Texas.

Trump’s chances of winning a second term depended on his ability to hang on to his leads in states like Georgia and in Pennsylvania — where Biden has been narrowing the gap as vote counting progresses — and on overtaking Biden in one of the states where he is currently ahead.

Pennsylvania’s secretary of state said there were more than 1.4 million mail-in ballots still to be counted, and those votes are expected to heavily favour Biden.

Trump held leads in North Carolina and Georgia, and his campaign expressed hopes that his early Pennsylvania lead could withstand an influx of mail-in ballots for Biden. (ANI)

ITBP Dog Squad Gets 17 Pups, To Be Trained For Anti-Terror Ops

By Ankur Sharma

Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) got 17 new warriors for its K9 team as mothers Olga and Oleshya gave birth to 17 Malinois pups at the ITBP’s elite National Training Centre for Dogs (NTCD) at Bhanu in Panchkula, Haryana.

Both mothers belong to the Malinois breed, which was used by the United States in the operation to eliminate dreaded terrorist Osama Bin Laden.

Both warriors of ITBP are counter-insurgency grid veterans and are enjoying motherhood at ITBP K9 Breeding Centre.

“Olga and Oleshya are both sisters – both are 5 years old and the father too is a serving dog named Gala. Both sisters and the father have tenure in Left Wing Extremism (LWE) hit Chhattisgarh where ITBP is deployed,” the ITBP said.

“Olga has given birth to 9 pups, while Oleshya to 8 pups. The pups were born on September 30, and October 4, respectively to the two sisters,” it added.

The ITBP official claimed that Oleshya and Olga have a track record of safeguarding the ITBP troops by sanitising Road Opening Party (ROPs) and acting as a deterrent to ambushes. Both have detected IEDs several times in their career, thereby saving numerous lives in various operations.

Gala- the father of the sister dogs is a tough dog who also loyally escorted the ADP troops and never failed. Gala also took part in the anti-sabotage duty at Atal Tunnel inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently.

According to the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) (Vet) Sudhakar Natarajan, “They are genetically top class pups, from a very robust bloodline imbibing the best genetic vigour from the mothers, who are fearless, agile and with superb olfactory capacity”

The ITBP has received requests from other Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) for these pups to be used for their security duties.

ITBP was the first force to deploy Malinois dogs in LWE hit areas a decade ago, and now they have also started scientifically breeding K9s to meet own demands and provide pups to other CAPFs and State Police Forces as mandated by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). (ANI)

LAC Troops Get New Huts, Clothing To Beat Winters

Amid border tensions with China, the Indian Army has procured new extreme cold weather clothing from the US and it is being provided to the troops deployed in eastern Ladakh to boost preparedness in the winter months.

Along with the new clothing, some of the troops have also been provided with Sig assault rifles during their deployment along the China border.

ANI on Wednesday accessed a picture of fully prepared soldiers equipped with American extreme cold weather clothing and Sig Sauer assault rifle.

Indian Army officials said that it is providing new habitats and clothing to soldiers to help beat winters during present deployment in Eastern Ladakh along the China border.

“An initial lot of extreme cold-weather clothing from the American defence forces have been received and are being used by our troops there,” government sources had told ANI.

The sources said that the Indian Army maintains a stock of 60,000 of these extreme cold weather clothing sets for troops deployed in entire Ladakh including both western fronts in Siachen and Eastern Ladakh sector.

This year, there was an additional requirement of around 30,000 of these sets as close to 90,000 troops are deployed in the region in view of aggression by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) along the LAC.

The new batch of Sig Sauer assault rifles is being given to the soldiers deployed on the front with China in eastern Ladakh.

The Defence Acquisition Council had earlier approved the acquisition of the second batch of around 72,500 Sig Sauer assault rifles from America under fast track procedures for the Army. The first lot of these assault rifles was provided to the troops deployed in the counter-terrorist operations in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Indian side has deployed two additional divisions on the LAC that have been brought to the sector from plains and a mountain division which has been training for high-altitude operations for many years now.

India is getting a lot of equipment from America including assault rifles for the special forces as well as the Sig Sauer assault rifles for the infantry troops. (ANI)

Fresh FIR Against Arnab For ‘Assaulting’ Cop During Arrest

A fresh FIR was registered against Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami on Wednesday for allegedly assaulting a woman police officer when a team reached his residence here this morning to arrest him in a 2018 abetment to suicide case.

The fresh FIR was registered at N M Joshi Marg police station here under sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (acts by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

Earlier today, Goswami was arrested in the death case of interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother who died by suicide in Alibaug in May 2018. A suicide note, purportedly written by Naik, alleged that Goswami had not paid him his dues.

Later in the day, Goswami alleged that he, along with his mother-in-law, father-in-law, son and wife, was physically assaulted by the policemen who went to arrest him.

Republic TV channel has telecast visuals of Mumbai police entering Goswami’s residence and what appears to be a scuffle.

The owner of Republic TV had also shown injury marks to the reporters after he reached the police station, and alleged that the policemen assaulted him, held him by the scruff of his neck and pushed him.

Advocate Gaurav Parker, Goswami’s lawyer, alleged that the journalist has been arrested in a case without an FIR and assaulted by two policemen at his residence.

The suicide case, in which a closure report was filed in 2019, was reopened after Naik’s wife Akshata approached a court. In September this year, Home Minister Anil Deshmukh had ordered a re-investigation into the case after a fresh complaint by Naik’s daughter.

Meanwhile, the journalist’s arrest has attracted sharp criticism of the Maharashtra government by Union ministers, including Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The BJP leaders accused the state government of misusing their power.

On the other hand, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut today said that the arrest of Goswami was done after following due procedures and added that the Maharashtra government and political leaders do not interfere in the functioning of the police department.

The Editors Guild of India and All India Bar Association have also condemned the arrest. The AIBA also termed the arrest a violation of several Supreme Court guidelines. (ANI)

Delhi Traders Rue Falling Sales Of Firecrackers

By Joymala Bagchi

The sale of firecrackers at the largest wholesale market, Sadar Bazar is hitting a down graph with at least an average loss of 50 to 60 per cent with sellers in the market requesting the National Green Tribunal (NGT) not to ban crackers.

In Sadar Bazar, only 10 shops have received the certificate to sell green crackers (that causes less pollution comparatively and are allowed by the government). During the last four years, the number of shops dealing with firecrackers massively decreased from 70 to now at 10.

Along with the ongoing pandemic and daily deteriorating Air Quality Index (AQI), there has been an increase in the variety of items available in green crackers, which last year, was only three to four.

Speaking to ANI, Harjit Singh Chhabra, General Secretary, crackers Association, Sadar Bazar said, “mandatorily all the ten firecrackers shops at Sadar Bazar are selling green crackers, however, the overall selling percentage is very poor and this is hitting us directly after almost no work for six months.”

Chhabra in addition said, “I want to request National Green Tribunal not take any such steps like banning because for us it is a matter of livelihood. We would be devastated. Ban tobacco instead. Govt has opened liquor shops too after it was banned during the lockdown. We ask them not to bring us on roads.”

Twenty-three states and union territories were issued notices by NGT regarding the imposition of ban on firecrackers in the interest of public health and environment amidst the spiking pollution crisis and Covid-19 pandemic. The plea sought their stand on whether the use of firecrackers be banned from November 7 to 30 on Wednesday.

Similar notices were issued to the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) and four State governments on November 2.

A response was sought from MoEF, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi Pollution Control Committee, Police Commissioner of Delhi and the governments of Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan on this.

It is estimated that the firecracker industry with its new norms has the involvement of more than 50 thousand workers or more from making the cracker till packaging.

SN Chawla owner of a firecracker shop at Sadar said, “since the last few years we are facing hardships. We understand the crisis we are going through be it health or environment but we all are selling green crackers only. Last two years we had only three-four varieties and this year we have items but no customers. It’s not only about us but it’s about the livelihood of thousands.”

Among most popular items sparkler, charki, flowerpot, bullet bomb and rockets are being preferred however mostly shop owners buying in small or nominal quantity just to mark the festive season.

In a crucial and so far stand alone step Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot-led govt banned sell of any kind of firecracker on November 2. The govt has decided to impose a hefty penalty of Rs 10,000 on shopkeeper if found selling crackers. Also, an amount of Rs 2,000 is to be paid by the person found using or allowing any kind of fireworks.

Vimlendu Jha, Environmental expert said, “It’s a welcome step taken by Rajasthan govt and similar step needs to be taken in the entire national capital region. We have seen how the pollution level rises escalates up to by 20 times on the day of Diwali. In Delhi NCR there needs to ban on firecrackers.”

Medical experts in rhetoric have warned of perishing effect of SARCOV2 that primarily diagnosed as respiratory virus and pollution on human health. It has been speculated this situation of virus and pollution will spike positive cases and fatality rate.

National capital is already dealing in an alarming situation that has witnessed a spike in coronavirus cases with figures crossing atleast 5000 daily and increased ICU services. (ANI)

Biden Camp Calls Trump’s Claims Of Win ‘Outrageous’

Former US Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign slammed President Donald Trump’s claim of victory prematurely as “outrageous, unprecedented and incorrect”.

Biden campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillion issued a statement after Trump’s remarks at the White House where he said that he would go to the Supreme Court to put the counting of ballots to a halt after election day.

“The counting will not stop. It will continue until every duly cast vote is counted. Because that is what our laws — the laws that protect every Americans’ constitutional right to vote — require,” O’Malley Dillon said in a statement, as quoted by The Hill and added that there was “a naked effort to take away the democratic rights of American citizens.”

She further said that the Biden campaign is prepared to battle Trump in court if he goes through to try and stop the tabulation of votes.

“We repeat what the Vice President said tonight: Donald Trump does not decide the outcome of this election. Joe Biden does not decide the outcome of this election,” O’Malley Dillon said and added, “The American people decide the outcome of this election. And the democratic process must and will continue until its conclusion.”

This comes after Trump claimed that he had won the election on Wednesday (local time), thanked the American people for their tremendous support and said the results of polls have been “phenomenal”.

“I thank the American people for their tremendous support. A very sad group of people is trying to disenfranchise that group of people and we will not stand for it… The results tonight have been phenomenal… We were getting ready to win this election. Frankly, we did win this election,” he said while addressing a crowd, many of whom were without masks, from the White House.

Addressing his supporters from the East Room in the White House, Trump said, “We want voting to stop.”

“We’ll be going to the US Supreme Court. We want all voting to stop. We don’t want them to find any ballots at 4 in the morning and add them to the list… as far as I’m concerned, we’ve already won,” said Trump. (ANI)

Macron Agenda To ‘Liberate’ Islam Has A History

The recent storm over the inflammatory statements against the Holy prophet and Islam itself, by the French President Macron has set the Muslim world on fire. Leaders of all hues and denominations have condemned the so-called latest attacks on Islam. The outcry as expected follows a similar pattern after any anti-Islam incident takes place in the Western world. We need to take a deep breath, pause and wonder on the similarity of attacks and the Islamic response to it globally.

Muslims, unlike other followers of the ‘books’ do not believe in ruminating about the past. Instead they move on with times. While the two other communities, which follow the book, impart their young generations about the atrocities faced by them in the past, instil anti-Islam feelings in them. Alongside the western world also continues with its activities related to interfaith relations and peaceful coexistence.

In real terms one wonders whether these activities are indeed carried out with intentions or are just an eyewash, while beneath the surface anti-Islam hatred continues unabated, as they are in real terms afraid of Islam and its teachings.

What has happened in France is nothing new. The French radical extremism, legitimises itself under the French term laicité meaning secular, and under this garb it continues its attacks on French and non-French Muslims, and this deceiving is nothing new.

A French NGO, The Collective Against Islamophobia in France (CCIF) listed 1,043 Islamophobic incidents that occurred in 2019 (a 77 percent increase since 2017). Not so far back, in October 2019, French President Emmanuel Macron and his then Interior Minister Christophe Castaner connected terrorism in France to any signs of French Muslims’ faith and culture, including having a beard, praying five times a day, eating halal food, etc.

‘Liberating’ Islam

Last week, Macron declared “Islam is a religion that is in crisis all over the world today, we are not just seeing this in our country”. He added that he is seeking to “liberate” Islam in France from foreign influences by improving oversight of mosque financing.

One wonders who gave the right to Macron to ‘liberate Islam’. Historically, Macron is not the first French ruler who wanted to “liberate” Islam. This is an old French “secular” tradition from the times of Napoleon Bonaparte. When Napoleon invaded Egypt and Palestine in 1798, he lied to the Egyptians by announcing that he and his army were “faithful Muslims” and that they have come to liberate Muslims and Islam from the tyranny of the Turk Mamluks.

However, the deception did not work and both the Egyptians and Palestinians rose against him. Napoleon was defeated, though his army committed untold atrocities in Egypt and Palestine. At that time Napoleon and France wanted to avenge the defeat faced by French forces in the Palestinian city of Acre, two centuries ago.

French Invasion of Algeria

The French invasion of Algeria was launched in mid-June 1830 and Algiers fell on July 5. The French army robbed Algiers’ treasury clean, stealing upwards of 43 million Francs in gold and silver. The French King Charles X told the French National Assembly that the immediate goals of the invasion were to avenge the French for the Algerian insult, besides “ending piracy and reclaim Algeria for Christianity”.

In line with its Christian commitments, the conquering French army took over mosques and converted them into churches and cathedrals at gunpoint, including the largest Ottoman Ketchaoua mosque in Algiers, built in 1612, which was converted into the Cathedral of St Philippe in December 1832. That same year the French wiped out the entire tribe of the Ouffias, sparing no woman or child, and seizing all their possessions.

French barbarism

We should not forget the French barbarism, which has been recorded for posterity by history. Authors like Martin Evans, John Phillips, Haley C. Brown have documented in-depth the French atrocities in Algeria in their books. It would also be pertinent to note here that the French played a crucial role in persuading the Algerian ulemas and clerics to close the doors of Ijtihad, which ultimately made a crucial and long lasting affect on the growth of Islamic sciences and social sciences.

In 1871, Algerian Muslims revolted again against French rule, with 150,000 people joining the forces of a local tribal leader, Al-Muqrani. The French genocidal machine responded by killing hundreds of thousands of Algerians, which, combined with the French-caused famine deaths in the late 1860s, resulted in the death of one million Algerians. The French razed dozens of towns and villages to the ground while eliminating the entire elite of Algerian society. But even that did not resolve France’s “crisis” with Islam.

During the 19th century, France colonised many Muslim nations, and thus their concern about their “crisis” with Islam increased further. To answer this quest, a journalist of ill repute and with known anti-Turk views was appointed to seek answers. Edmond Fazy (1870-1910) presented his analysis in the form of Questions diplomatiques et colonials, which contained submissions by known anti-Muslim and anti-Turk academics, journalists or so-called experts on Islam and African nations. Edward Said has discussed the real role of these so-called Orientalists in-depth in his book Orientalism (1977).

Future of Islam

Chauvinism and hate have always dominated the French culture, whether it is with the British or Islamists. Many of the contributors to Fazy’s journal saw fit to manipulate Islamic theology and transform Muslim ulemas to produce not only a modern Islam that European modernity would tolerate, but also one that, they hoped, would weaken the Ottoman Empire.

ALSO READ: ‘China Sees Practising Islam As Extremism’

The project of transforming Islam into something compatible with European Christianity and which French laicite can tolerate continues afoot in 2020, but with unsatisfactory results as far as Macron is concerned.

Both the French Muslims and immigrant Muslims continue to face an institutionalised discrimination in France. The country continues to be submerged in a dominant discourse of chauvinism and hate today that is not dissimilar to the one that always dominated French culture even before the French Revolution.

The current French crisis is based on its White supremacist Christian agenda and a country holding on to its past glories or misdeeds, while in reality they should strive to undo or repent their misdeeds committed by them in the former colonies held by them.

What the French need to do is to pay back the debts they owe to all those whom they robbed and killed around the world since then. Only that will end France’s crisis with “Islam” and with itself.

At the same time, Muslims across the globe need to connect or reconcile their national, ethnic and sectarian identities within the context of Islam’s inner unity and integrity based on moral and human grounds, on the one hand, and maintain its global and cosmopolitan outlook on the other. This will be the best antidote against such vitriolic agenda.

Scientists Find Synthetic Mini-Antibodies For Covid-19

In breakthrough research, scientists have identified synthetic mini-antibodies to combat COVID-19.

The ability of SARS-CoV-2 to infect cells depends on interactions between the viral spike protein and the human cell surface protein ACE2. To enable the virus to hook onto the cell surface, the spike protein binds ACE2 using three finger-like protrusions, called the receptor-binding domains (RBDs). Blocking the RBDs therefore has the potential to stop the virus from entering human cells. This can be done using antibodies.

Nanobodies, small antibodies found in camels and llamas, are promising as tools against viruses due to their high stability and small size. Although obtaining them from animals is time-consuming, technological advances now allow for rapid selection of synthetic nanobodies, called sybodies. A technology platform to select sybodies from large synthetic libraries was recently developed in the lab of Markus Seeger at the University of Zurich, and made available for this study.

In search of the best sybody against SARS-CoV-2

EMBL Hamburg’s Christian Low group searched through the existing libraries to find sybodies that could block SARS-CoV-2 from infecting human cells. First, they used the viral spike protein’s RBDs as bait to select those sybodies that bind to them. Next, they tested the selected sybodies according to their stability, effectiveness, and the precision of binding. Among the best binders, one called sybody 23 turned out to be particularly effective in blocking the RBDs.

To learn exactly how sybody 23 interacts with the viral RBDs, researchers in the group of Dmitri Svergun at EMBL Hamburg analysed the binding of sybody 23 to the RBDs by small-angle X-ray scattering. In addition, Martin Hallberg at CSSB and Karolinska Institutet used cryo-EM to determine the structure of the full SARS-CoV-2 spike bound to sybody 23. The RBDs switch between two positions: in the ‘up’ position the RBDs poke out, ready to bind ACE2; in the ‘down’ position they are furled to hide from the human immune system. The molecular structures revealed that sybody 23 binds RBDs in both ‘up’ and ‘down’ positions, and blocks the areas where ACE2 would normally bind. This ability to block RBDs regardless of their position might explain why sybody 23 is so effective.

Finally, to test if sybody 23 can neutralise a virus, the group of Ben Murrell at Karolinska Institutet used a different virus, called a lentivirus, modified such that it carried SARS-CoV-2’s spike protein on its surface. They observed that sybody 23 successfully disabled the modified virus in vitro. Additional tests will be necessary to confirm whether this sybody could stop SARS-CoV-2 infection in the human body.

Scientific collaboration during lockdown

“The collaborative spirit has been enormous in these times, and everybody was motivated to contribute,” says Christian Low, one of the lead scientists in the study. The researchers started the project as soon as they received approval from EMBL leadership to reopen their laboratories during the COVID-19 lockdown. They managed to select the candidate sybodies and perform the analyses in just a few weeks.

“Getting the results so quickly was only possible because the methodologies we used had already been established for other research projects unrelated to SARS-CoV-2. Developing these tools would have taken significantly more time and resources,” says Low.

The results of this project hold out the promise of a potential way to treat COVID-19. In future work, the scientists will perform further analyses to confirm whether sybody 23 could be an effective COVID-19 treatment. (ANI)
