Mamata Slams Centre For Trying To ‘Control’ Twitter

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday slammed the BJP-led central government over its “effort to control” Twitter and claimed that the Centre, having failed to influence the microblogging platform is now trying to bulldoze it.

Drawing a parallel, the West Bengal Chief Minister said her government, too, was being meted out the same treatment by the Centre.
Addressing a press conference in Howrah, Banerjee said, “Unfortunately, they (the Centre) can not control Twitter that is why they want to bulldoze them. Similarly, they can not control me that is why they are trying to bulldoze my government. They should stop this.”

Banerjee refused to acknowledge that political violence took place in West Bengal after Assembly polls results and called it a “BJP gimmick”.

“We condemn violence. Political violence is a BJP gimmick. They should have gone to UP where the dead bodies are floating,” the CM said.

She also alleged that the Centre has not provided any relief fund to the state after the cyclone Yaas.

“No money has been given to the state by the Centre after cyclone Yaas,” she added.

Earlier on Wednesday, government sources had said that Twitter has lost its status as an intermediary platform in India as it does not comply with new IT rules.

Now, instead of being considered just a platform hosting content from various users, Twitter will be held directly editorially responsible for posts published on its platform. The implication of this development is that if there is any charge against Twitter for alleged unlawful content it would be treated as a publisher – not an intermediary – and be liable for punishment under any law, including IT Act, as also the penal laws of the country, sources stated. Pinjra Tod Activists Move HC For Release In Delhi Riots Case

By Sushil Batra

Pinjara Tod activists Natasha Narwal, Devangna Kalita and Jamia student Asif Iqbal Tanha have moved the Delhi High Court seeking immediate release from jail.

A Division Bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and Anup Jairam Bhambhani granted bail to Kalita, Narwal and Tanha on June 15 on furnishing of a personal bond of Rs 50,000 each and two local sureties of each.

Advocate Sidharth Aggarwal appearing for the accused submitted that the order of bail which was passed on June 15 has still not been implemented.

“The problem is by not taking a view the trial court has denied me of bail which was granted on June 15. I have furnished FD receipts. I have already given the new address,” Advocate Aggarwal added.

Special Public Prosecutor Advocate Amit Prasad submitted that they were only following the orders of the court.

“The address of the appellants was to be verified. Addresses provided to us are of different states. We don’t have magical powers that we will verify all of this, addresses in Jharkhand, Assam in such a short time. That’s why the application seeking more time to verification procedure was moved,” said SPP Amit Prasad.

After noting down the submission of both sides, Bench of Justice Sidharth Mridul and Justice Anup Jairam Bambhani said, “let the trial court decide the application” (which is expected to pass shortly) and passed an order on that. “We can put these matters for later in the afternoon to be apprised of.”

A Delhi Court on Wednesday kept the reserved order on issuing an order on the application seeking immediate release of Pinjra Tod activists Devangana Kalita and Natasha Narwal from judicial custody

Additional Sessions Judge Revinder Bedi reserved the order after hearing submission made by Pinjra Tod activists’ defence lawyer Adit Pujari and Special Public Prosecutor Amit Prasad representing Delhi Police.

Delhi Police had sought more time to verify the particulars of the accused and sureties.

Earlier on June 15, the trial Court asked the SHO concerned to submit a verification Report relating to particulars of the accused and sureties.

In three separate orders, the Delhi High Court has granted bail to Pinjra tod activists Devangana Kalita, Natasha Narwal and Jamia student Asif Iqbal Tanha. All of them were arrested under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, in connection with north-east Delhi violence cases.

Kalita and Pinjra tod activist Narwal were arrested in the subject FIR on May 29, 2020, and Tanha was arrested on May 19, 2020, in the present case. (ANI)

Covid-19 Vaccines: Myths And Misinformation

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday clarified many facts and myths regarding the COVID-19 vaccines and said that the number of deaths reported following vaccination in the country is only 0.0002 per cent of 23.5 crore doses administered.

COVID-19 vaccine registration Myth- Pre-registration for vaccination through online registration and prior booking of appointment is mandatory to avail of vaccination services.

Fact- No pre-registration for vaccination is mandatory. Anyone, aged 18 years or more, can directly go to the nearest vaccination centre where the vaccinator performs the on-site registration and provides vaccination in the same visit depending on slot availability.

COVID vaccination in rural areas: Myth- There are limited facilities for on-site or facilities registration for COVID vaccination in rural areas.

Fact- There are many modes of registration in rural areas. This includes facilitated registration through CSCs on Co-Win, facilitators (health workers or ASHAs) for on-site registration and vaccination directly at the nearest vaccination centres and assisted registrations through the 1075 helpline

Digital divide in vaccination drive Myth- There is a rural-urban gap and digital divide in vaccination drive as rural areas trails urban areas.

Fact- Out of 1.03 lakh COVID vaccination centre (CVCs), 61,842 CVCs- SHC, PHC and CHCs (59.7 per cent) are in rural areas where people can directly walk0in for on-site registration and vaccination (from May 1, 2021, till June 12, 2021)
Out of 69,995 vaccination centres so far classified on CoWIN, 71 per cent (49,883) centres are located in rural areas.

Vaccination coverage in tribal areas Myth- There is a lack of vaccination coverage in tribal areas

Fact- As per the data available on CoWIN as of June 3, 2021. Vaccination per million population in tribal districts is higher than the national average 128 out of 176 tribal districts are performing better than all India vaccination coverage. More walk-in vaccination are happening in tribal districts as compared to the national average

Case of severe AEFI Myth- There have been some media reports suggesting an increase in the case of severe Adverse event following immunization (AEFI) which have also resulted in ‘succumbing of patients’ post-vaccination

Fact- These reports are bases on an incomplete and limited understanding of the matter, it may be noted that the term “succumbed” implies causality

Any death following vaccination cannot be automatically assumed to be due to vaccination unless investigated by the AEFO committees and attributed to the vaccination

COVID-19 vaccination death Myth- There have been some media reports claiming that 488 deaths following vaccination are linked to post-COVID complications during January 16, 2021, and June 7, 2021

Fact- The number of deaths reported following vaccination in the country is only 0.0002 per cent of 23.5 crore doses administered.

The mortality rate for those testing positive is over 1 per cent and vaccination can prevent these deaths. Therefore, the risk of dying following vaccination is negligible compared to the risk of dying due to COVID-19. (ANI)

MQM Activist Tortured To Death In Pakistan Jail

Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) activist Shahid Aziz, who was unlawfully arrested in 2017, has been tortured to death by authorities of Karachi Central Prison.

Aziz, lodged in jail for over four years, succumbed to his torture injuries inflicted on him by the authorities.
The 50-year-old was a worker of MQM’s Shah Faisal Colony Sector. The authorities concealed his arrest for several months and placed him at an undisclosed detention centre.

Later on, he was listed as under arrest and taken to Karachi Central Prison under numerous fake charges.

He was lodged in jail for a full four-year term without any lawful charge and the authorities failed to prove his involvement in any anti-social activity.

Due to torture, his physical condition deteriorated over the years but he was denied medical assistance.

Two months ago, he was taken from prison and remanded in custody for 15 days and subjected to physical torture in custody for 15 days.

He was then transferred to the prison once again.

MQM founder and leader Altaf Hussain has strongly condemned the extra judicial killing of Aziz in the custody of law enforcement agencies.

He said that the extra-judicial killings are an ongoing state operation against MQM and Mohajir nations.

Hussain appealed to the UN, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and other international organisations to take notice. (ANI)

The Three Woman Lifesavers Guarding The Goa Beaches

‘A Woman Lifeguard In Goa Prompts Both – Surprise & Respect’

Charmaine deSouza (46), one of the three woman lifesavers guarding the Goa beaches, describes what it means to be in a profession dominated by men in our country

I am a lifesaver at Drishti Marine, a marine safety and rescue services across all the beaches in Goa on behalf of state tourism department. Before I joined Drishti, I was a freelance writer and swimming instructor.

I didn’t have a choice about swimming. As an infant, my paediatrician detected that my legs were not developing the way they should and this may affect my gait. The doctor told my parents that learning swimming may help this condition. I learnt to swim in the sea at a depth where my parents could stand. And before I was a two-year old, I was negotiating water in freestyle. I was able to walk, thanks to the hours spend in the sea.

In the late 80s and the early 90s, a popular TV serial Baywatch was a hit among teenagers and young adults. I too found the vocation and the thrills that came with it fascinating. When the job with Drishti was available, I applied for the post without a second thought. The training was challenging but I loved seeing how far I could push myself. It involved all the rescue techniques and a lot of theory.

My experience has been fabulous and I love the surf, sun and sand. I enjoy being at the beach every day. I love that the work atmosphere is happy. The response from the people has been a mix of surprise and respect. They want to strike up conversations and take pics. I’ve even had people walk up to me and thank me and the rest of the lifesaver for keeping the beaches safe.

Charmaine was once fascinated by TV series Baywatch

I’m not sure about the rest of India but here in Goa everyone is surprised to see a woman lifesaver and say we need more women in this line. I sincerely feel Drishti Marine is making a difference by hiring more lady lifesavers and I feel more women should step forward and choose this as a career especially if they love the beach and swimming. When I was in Candolim for my On Job Training, a group of young girls ranging from 10-15 walked up to me and asked if I was a lifesaver. I told them I was training to be one. They all mumbled an “awesome” and then added that they want to be lifesavers when they grow up.

In another incident, after getting posted in Baga Beach (still on training) we did a swim with lifesavers on women’s day and a ten-year old girl who came for it said it’s the coolest job ever and she would like to be a lifesaver when she’s old enough. I hope that these girls become lifesavers in a few years’ time.

It is important to have women lifesavers. We may not match the physical strength of the men but it makes female swimmers feel safer. I’ve had a few ladies and a young girl walk up to me and tell me they feel safer seeing a woman lifesaver on duty especially when there are large numbers of men around. It also makes some of them feel more comfortable being attended to by a lady.

People ask me why more women are not employed as lifesavers. I tell them the opportunity exists but women themselves don’t step ahead because they feel they cannot match the physical demands of the job. However there are various roles that women can play very well in being part of the lifesaving force.

I believe it’s good to stray from the beaten path and choose a line that you feel passionate about. After becoming a lifesaver as tough and as long as the hours may be, every day feels like a holiday. The end of the day leaves you happy. If you love water, enjoy spending time near the sea then this is a line you’ll love and it won’t feel like work either.

Protests Erupt As LJP Removes Chirag As Party Chief

Chirag Paswan was removed from the post of Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) national president after an emergency meeting of LJP national working committee.

The decision was taken at a meeting of five LJP MPs at the residence of Pashupati Kumar Paras in Delhi.
Notably, within a year of the demise of Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) founder Ram Vilas Paswan, son Chirag is facing opposition from within the party.

“I tried but failed to keep this party intact which was made by my father and my family. Party is like a mother and the mother should not be cheated. In a democracy, the public is paramount. I thank the people who have kept faith in the party,” tweeted Chirag Paswan in Hindi.

“Those who are protesting against Pashupati Kumar Paras are bad elements who had entered the party after Ram Vilas Paswan’s death. They will be removed soon. I am not calling Chirag Paswan a bad element,” said Shravan Kumar, LJP leader

Supporters of Chirag Paswan smeared black ink on the posters of five LJP MLAs outside the party’s office in Patna.

Meanwhile, LJP has decided to remove all five MPs from the party after a national executive meeting was held on Tuesday.

“A national executive meeting was held. We decided to remove all the five MPs from the party. There is a process of doing things at a party. This will be called a betrayal,” LJP leader Raju Tiwari said.

The National Executive Committee has unanimously decided to remove Pashupati Kumar Paras MP, Beena Devi MP, Chaudhary Mehboob Ali Kaiser MP, Chandan Singh MP and Prince Raj MP from the primary membership of Lok Janshakti Party with immediate effect. The National President of LJP Chirag Paswan is authorised to take all decisions in the coming assembly elections on behalf of the party,” reads LJP resolution.

LJP leader Pashupati Kumar Paras has been notified as the new parliamentary leader of the party in Lok Sabha on Monday.

Earlier, five LJP MPs had met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and handed over a letter to him regarding the removal of party chief Chirag Paswan from the position of Lok Sabha Parliamentary party leader.

Paras had said that the step has been taken to save the party.

“There are six MPs in our party. It was the desire of five MPs to save our party. So, I have not broken the party. I have saved it. Chirag Paswan is my nephew as well as the party’s national president. I have no objection against him,” Paras had said.

Paras is currently representing the Hajipur Lok Sabha seat in Bihar.

However, LJP national president Chirag Paswan on Monday had arrived at Pashupati Kumar Paras’ residence to meet him over the developments in the party.

“LJP MPs met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Sunday and handed over a letter to him about new developments in the party. They requested him to consider Pashupati Kumar Paras as the new leader of the LJP in Lok Sabha,” the party sources informed.

Party sources added that LJP MPs are not happy with the working style of Chirag Paswan after the demise of his father, the former Union Minister and patron of LJP Ram Vilas Paswan.

LJP is currently a part of the National Democratic Alliance at the Centre.

Notably, LJP had fielded candidates against Janata Dal United (JDU), which is also a part of NDA in the Bihar elections last year. However, LJP did not manage to open its account in the elections.

LJP was formed by late Ram Vilas Paswan in 2000. Paswan, a heavyweight leader in Bihar politics passed away in October 2020. (ANI)

First Case Of ‘Green Fungus’ Admitted To Mumbai Hospital

A 34-year-old patient has been airlifted from a private hospital in Indore to Mumbai’s Hinduja hospital on Monday after being detected with ‘green fungus’ infection, possibly the first such case in the country.

“The 34-year-old man, COVID patient, was being treated in Indore’s Aurobindo hospital for the last one and a half month. He had 90 per cent lung infection. During diagnosis, green fungus was detected in his lungs which is different from Mucormycosis or Black Fungus. This possibly is the first green fungus case in the country,” said Apoorva Tiwari, District Data Manager, Health Department, Indore.
She also said that the patient was airlifted to Mumbai on a chartered plane on Monday.

Meanwhile, another woman, who was under treatment for white fungus in an Indore hospital, is now healthy. The fungus that was removed from her brain is reportedly India’s largest fungus in dimensions.

“The woman was admitted to a private hospital on complaints of headache. Upon diagnosis, a large fungus was found in her brain. The size of the fungus was 8.2 cm x 4.6 cm x 4 cm, which is probably India’s largest white fungus. This is also a post-COVID effect,” she added.

“However, the fungus has been removed from her brain and she is now better and has been discharged,” Apoorva said. (ANI)

Ayodhya Land Deal Fair, Oppn Charges Misleading: RSs

By Aashique Hussain

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) ideologue Indresh Kumar on Tuesday called the land deal by the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust “transparent”, adding that the Opposition leaders are losing their integrity and respect by creating obstacles in the temple construction.

“The land deal was done online and is totally transparent. The people who are creating obstacles are the same people who had refused to believe in the existence of Lord Ram. They have always opposed the cause of the temple. They are misleading people. The people of the country have full faith in the Trust,” Kumar said.

He added that the prices of land always increases and sometimes it shoots up in a matter of hours.

Kumar further said that the people of the Trust have renounced the world and not indulging in materialistic things.

“All these political parties are those who have done the work of killing Ram devotees by firing bullets. Because of which they have been ousted from power. But they are not shying away from repeating the same mistakes,” the RSS leader added.

He further urged the Opposition parties to contribute in the temple construction because they are losing their integrity and respect by creating obstacles in it.

On Sunday, Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Tej Narayan Pandey had accused the Trust of committing corruption in a land deal and sought a CBI probe into the matter.

Holding a press conference on Sunday, Pandey said, “The piece of land was earlier purchased for Rs 2 crores by Ravi Mohan Tiwari and Sultan Ansari. 10 minutes later, the Trust bought the land for Rs 18.5 crores on March 18.”

The SP leader also claimed that Rs 17 crore was sent to the bank account of Ravi Mohan Tiwari and Sultan Ansari through RTGS mode of payment and demanded a probe into the RTGS money transfer.

Meanwhile, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) International Working President Alok Kumar on Monday said that defamation suits will be filed against Opposition parties who are trying to mislead people ahead of Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls.

“The land was in the name of Kusum Pathak. A few years ago she had signed an agreement with Sultan Ansari and Ravi Mohan Tripathi in which she agreed to sell it for Rs 2 crore, which was the market rate of the land at the time,” Kumar said.

Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) reservoirs in Jharkhand Mamata Banerjee

Mamata In A New Challenger Avatar

Since May 2014, after its victory in the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP as a party, and the BJP government in New Delhi, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has been in ‘election mode’. Critics say it was this “obsession” for electoral victory that the government completely missed the deadly ‘second surge’ of the killer Covid-19 pandemic and failed to ramp up the healthcare infrastructure in time.

After a brief pause, the party leadership is once again switching to the ‘election mode’ with an eye on the coming Uttar Pradesh elections next year. For Modi and Shah, winning UP seems the last straw amidst a rapidly falling popularity graph.

However, the drubbing in West Bengal continues to rankle. Not only because ‘Didi’ has emerged as a ‘national icon’ after her incredible victory with Modi as her principal political opponent. But because she is tipped to be a possible leader of a secular opposition alliance in the next Lok Sabha elections.

Mamata Banerjee is not unaware of her new status. One can clearly witness that every political move of Didi since her victory on May 2, is designed to position herself as a ‘direct adversary’ to Modi, while attacking him routinely with an aggressive and creative consistency. This is bound to unnerve the ‘Dear Leader’ in New Delhi.

Take, for example, her statement after what seemed like the hounding of her chief secretary by the Centre on whimsical grounds: “There are so many Bengal cadre officers working for the Centre; if we confront like this, what will be the future of this country, Mr Prime Minister? Mr Busy Prime Minister, Mr Mann Ki Baat Prime Minister… what, do you want to finish me? Never, ever…. As long as people give me support, you cannot…”

ALSO READ: Time For A Federalist Alliance Against BJP

The latest is the ‘big news’ of what seemed a predictable event – the return of prodigal son Mukul Roy, back into the Trinamool, which he founded with Mamata Banerjee in 1998 against the mighty CPM which ruled Bengal for more than 30 years. Undoubtedly, this was ‘breaking news’ not only in Bengal, but in the national scenario.

Mukul Roy was the second-in-command, responsible for organizational affairs in the Trinamool, appointed as Union Railway Minister at the behest of Mamata Banerjee, her point-man in Delhi’s power circles, even while he called the shots in Kolkata. All this changed after the Narada-Saradha scam, and the decline in his fortunes led him into the lap of the BJP – also perhaps because that was the only alleged ‘method’ to escape the Centre’s law enforcement agencies.

Mukul Roy was seemingly sidelined before the assembly polls in the BJP though he was the key strategist who lifted the BJP to 18 Lok Sabha seats in 2019, an unprecedented victory in Bengal for the Hindutva party.

Roy shared this ‘scam dilemma’, along with another high profile ‘turncoat’, Suvendu Adhikari, who switched over to the BJP before the 2021 polls, became a bitter enemy of his mentor, abusing her in the most communal and misogynistic language during the campaign, and is now reportedly a favourite with the Modi-Shah dispensation, adding to the angst and anger of the ‘original’ BJP workers and leaders like state party chief Dilip Ghosh.

The inevitable return of Mukul Roy is therefore bad news for both Modi and Shah. In a party replete with discontent among its hardcore followers because it is filled to the brim with ‘turncoats’ — and several of them losing in the recent elections — his departure might trigger major defections back to Trinamool, including several MLAs. These defections are just a tip of the volcano – the BJP might be actually imploding in Bengal.

Indeed, with the BJP weakened in Bengal, and with Didi on the ascendant in terms of her ‘national stature’, it is believed by observers that all the signs are pointing to the beginning of the end of the Modi era, with a possible rainbow coalition of federal reassertion under a secular umbrella beginning to take shape in the national scenario. The latest is her move to send political strategist Prashant Kishore to meet Sharad Pawar, known for his tactical acumen; they had discussions for three hours.

Didi has called upon all opposition parties, including civil society organizations and NGOs to unite against Modi. Recently, in Kolkata, while yet again fully backing the farmers’ leaders who had come to meet her, she told journalists: “I have only one thing to say: Modi has to be removed from power.”

Besides, she told the farmers’ leaders that she will take the lead in organizing opposition leaders and chief ministers to hold a joint meeting in their support. Clearly, the importance she has been giving to the protracted movement and to specific leaders like Rakesh Tikait (the West Bengal assembly passed a resolution earlier in support of the farmers’ struggle), is evidence that she understands the political importance of the farmers as integral to future electoral dynamics, especially in the Hindi heartland, Haryana and Punjab.

Meanwhile, nursing the wounds of the massive defeat despite pumping in money and muscle, and the media hyperbole, the Modi-Shah regime started hounding Mamata Banerjee soon after May 2. First, there was this fake news campaign of organized violence against the BJP cadre and Hindus, with fake videos and Whatsapp campaigns trying to create a communal divide. She was blamed by central leaders, but the fact is that when the short-lived violence was triggered, the Election Commission was still in control, the central forces were still deputed in Bengal, and she had not been sworn in as the chief minister.

She took over, gave compensation to the victims across the political spectrum, and ordered a complete end to the violence. The violence stopped, even while Bengal celebrated the incredible victory of the secular forces against hate politics, with a deep, quiet and discreet dignity, mostly indoors.

Soon after, two of her senior ministers and two top leaders were arrested by the CBI, for being involved in the Narada scam. Mukul Roy and Suvendu Adhikari, also accused in the same scam, were left untouched. This was followed by the hounding of her chief secretary by the Centre, post Cyclone Yaas, for what seemed like a whimsical revenge act. Even the Congress and the CPM in Bengal criticized this, and there were rumblings within the BJP that this is indeed a terrible move by the Centre.

All this has been reinterpreted in Bengal and the rest of India as a display of arrogance and power, even while the feisty and resilient ‘Didi’ emerged yet again as a mass leader, street-fighter and formidable adversary against Modi. The more they hounded her, the more she has become popular, emerging as a ‘national icon’ who decisively took on Modi – and defeated him in his own game.

Clearly, as of now, it’s a win-win scenario for Mamata Banerjee. In a country where the Constitution and its federal structures have been so deliberately weakened in contemporary India, her brave and steadfast reassertion from the East might mark the rise of a new dynamics in mainstream politics in the country.

Dia Mirza Concerned Over People Not Wearing Masks

Actor Dia Mirza has raised concern over people flouting COVID-19 norms following lockdown relaxations in Maharashtra.

On Tuesday, Dia took to Twitter and wrote: “Passed by Linking Road yesterday and saw almost all vendors not wearing masks and so many customers wearing masks on the chins or no mask. What makes it scary is how crowded the entire street was.”

Many Twitter users have expressed similar views on Dia’s tweet.

“Strict fines on consumers and suspending licenses of errant shops and restaurants is the only way,” a netizen commented.

“Exactly…not more than 20 percent people are serious about wearing masks,” another user pointed out.

Meanwhile, Dia is currently expecting her first child with husband Vaibhav Rekhi. (ANI)
