Not Mandir-Masjid But Youth, Employment To Be Our Focus: Tejashwi

Ahead of the floor test in the Bihar Assembly that is slated to be held on August 24, newly appointed Deputy Chief Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav on Friday said that issues like employment and those related to youth’s future will be addressed if they remain in power.

“Since we have formed the government, issues like employment and those related to youth’s future are being addressed. Issues like Hindu-Muslims and Mandir-Masjid were only discussed when BJP was in power. Hatred was sown in the society then,” Tejashwi Yadav told ANI.
Earlier today Yadav called the recent tie-up of Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) “a natural alliance and not a deal”, and claiming that within a month Bihar will be the largest government jobs providing state.

Speaking to the reporters in the national capital where he reached on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan to meet his father and RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav, Tejashwi said, “It’s a natural alliance, not a deal. This is the real ‘Mahagathbandhan’ which was formed by Lalu Yadav Ji and Nitish Kumar. We welcomed Nitish Kumar’s decision and came together.”

Talking about the timeline of the fulfilment of his promises of providing jobs to the youth of the state, the Deputy CM said that it will only be done after the trust vote in the Assembly.

“We do not do BJP-style politics that we will threaten and buy the leaders. We will provide jobs, let the trust vote be over. We are very serious about this issue. Within one month, you will see that Bihar will be the single-largest job-giving state in government jobs,” he said.

Meanwhile, with the change in government in Bihar, a session of the state assembly has been convened for August 24. Legislators of the ruling Mahagathbandhan have given a notice for the removal of Speaker Vijay Kumar Sinha.

Sinha, who is a BJP MLA, on Thursday refused to comment on the no-confidence notice submitted against him. “As long as I am on this post, I will give no statement to the media on this (political development),” Sinha told reporters.

The motion against Sinha is likely to be taken up by the House when it meets to enable the Nitish Kumar government to prove its majority.

Nitish Kumar-led government will go for a floor test on August 24. Kumar had earlier said that the government has the support of seven parties and 164 MLAs.

Nitish Kumar took oath as Bihar chief minister on Wednesday for a record eighth time after he severed ties with BJP a day earlier and resigned as chief minister.

‘Boycott Call Against Aamir is Part of a Malicious Agenda’

Saral Singh, a movie buff in Lucknow, feels films are essentially for entertainment and he will not allow agenda-driven boycott calls to guide his choice of movies

Movies are a stress-buster for me. Having laboured through the week in office, meeting targets and what not, I look forward to watch the latest releases on large screen every weekend. That is my way to recharge my batteries for the week ahead. This week, I look forward to watching the much talked about, Aamir Khan-starrer Laal Singh Chaddha.

Yes, I am aware of the boycott calls against the movie on social media. But if you examine the basis for these calls, you will find them driven by a malicious agenda against one of the best movie actors of our times. To begin with, Aamir’s critics says that he has ridiculed Hindu beliefs and deities in his movies like PK. I have watched PK, and I did not find a single instance which could be found derogatory to my religion. The movie is against blind faith and dubious babas making fools of commoners. Period.

Second, some of Aamir Khan’s old statements are being dug out to label him ‘anti-national’ – a new charge coined for anyone who does not agree with hardcore nationalism. I have seen those clips on Twitter. I did not find any of them objectionable! As far as I can make out, he was expressing his concerns, just like any other person, over a prevalent issue! Just because he has an opinion which does not suit yours, will he be vulnerable to a smear campaign? Ridiculous.

Singh says old statements by Aamir Khan (inset) are being dug out and shared out of context

It has become easy to dig out old statements of a celebrity with the help of Google Baba, post them out of context on social media, and then issue a call for his or her boycott. Are we so thin-skinned and our sentiments so weak that we get hurt by personal opinions of others? We are getting offended even by humorous scenes in a work of fiction!

ALSO READ: ‘Why I Support the Call to #BoycottLaalSinghChaddha’

Then there are some people who are calling Laal Singh Chaddha an extension of Aamir’s role in PK or 3 Idiots. While I haven’t watched the movie to give a verdict on it, I want to ask them: So What? Every actor has a set of typical actions which get reflected in all his roles. Big deal? Another charge is the movie being a remake, as if this is the first time a remake has been made in Bollywood. Kuch bhi (any ruse)!

I have a simple advice for people who enjoy cinema: Do not fall prey to any agenda-driven boycott calls, and watch the movie of your choice. Do not let social media guide your choices. These are probably the best time for cinema lovers. So much new, creative content is being dished out, thanks to OTT platforms and ‘South’ movie makers’, that cinema buffs are spoiled for choice. As a movie-lover I would rather celebrate such good times than indulge into petty politics. Movies are entertainment, entertainment and entertainment… not a boxing ring to settle scores.

Tejashwi To Meet Sonia Gandhi Ahead Of Floor Test In Bihar

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, who reached the national capital on Thursday late evening, will meet Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi today, a move which comes days ahead of the floor test in the Bihar Assembly on August 24.

Tejashwi arrived in Delhi for the celebration of Raksha Bandhan. He will also meet RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav and discuss the recent developments in Bihar.
This will be Tejashwi’s first meeting with Sonia Gandhi after returning to power in Bihar where Nitish Kumar split from the BJP-led NDA and rejoined the previous alliance Mahagathbandhan.

The RJD leader on Thursday called the recent tie-up of Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) with Mahagathbandhan “a natural alliance and not a deal”, and claimed that Bihar will be the largest government jobs-providing state within a month.

Speaking to the reporters in the national capital, Tejashwi said, “It’s a natural alliance, not a deal.

We are very serious on this issue. Within one month, you will see that Bihar will be the single-largest job-giving state in government jobs,” he said.

Meanwhile, the new Nitish Kumar led-Mahagathbandhan government in Bihar will go for a floor test on August 24 to prove its majority in the state assembly.

Nitish Kumar was sworn Chief Minister for a record eighth time on Wednesday after he resigned from the post a day earlier and quit the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav took oath as Deputy Chief Minister.

The decision to hold the floor test on August 24 and make a suitable recommendation for convening state assembly was taken at a cabinet meeting attended by Kumar and Yadav on Wednesday. Sources said that expansion of the cabinet is likely to take place on August 16 and RJD will have more ministers than the Janata Dal-United.

Mahagathbandhan or Grand Alliance has the support of 164 members in the assembly.

Nitish Kumar broke his alliance with the BJP for the second time in eight years on Tuesday before joining hands with RJD and other parties in the Mahagathbandhan including the Congress and Left parties. The Grand Alliance also has the support of HAM, which has four MLAs in the Assembly. (ANI)

Vegetarian Women Face Higher Hip Fracture Risk Than Meat Eaters

According to research of over 26,000 middle-aged UK women, vegetarians have a 33% higher risk of hip fracture than habitual meat eaters.

University of Leeds research, published today (Thursday, August 11) in the journal BMC Medicine, investigated the risk of hip fracture in occasional meat-eaters; pescatarians, people who eat fish but not meat; and vegetarians compared to regular meat-eaters.

Among 26,318 women, 822 hip fracture cases were observed over roughly 20 years – that represented just over 3% of the sample population. After adjustment for factors such as smoking and age, vegetarians were the only diet group with an elevated risk of hip fracture.

This study is one of very few studies to compare risk of hip fracture in vegetarians and meat-eaters where the occurrence of hip fracture was confirmed from hospital records.

The scientists stress the need for more research into the exact causes of why vegetarians were at a greater risk of hip fracture.

Vegetarian diets can be ‘healthy or unhealthy’

Study lead author James Webster, a doctoral researcher from the School of Food Science and Nutrition at Leeds, said: “Our study highlights potential concerns regarding risk of hip fracture in women who have a vegetarian diet. However, it is not warning people to abandon vegetarian diets. As with any diet, it is important to understand personal circumstances and what nutrients are needed for a balanced healthy lifestyle.

“Vegetarian diets can vary widely from person to person and can be healthy or unhealthy, just like diets that include animal products.

“However, it is concerning that vegetarian diets often have lower intakes of nutrients that are linked with bone and muscle health. These types of nutrients generally are more abundant in meat and other animal products than in plants, such as protein, calcium, and other micronutrients.

“Low intake of these nutrients can lead to lower bone mineral density and muscle mass, which can make you more susceptible to hip fracture risk. This makes it especially important for further research to better understand factors driving the increased risk in vegetarians, whether it be particular nutrient deficiencies or weight management, so that we can help people to make healthy choices.”

Plant-based diets growing in popularity

Vegetarian diets have gained popularity in recent years, with a 2021 YouGov survey putting the size of the UK vegetarian population at roughly 5-7%. It is often perceived as a healthier dietary option, with previous evidence that shows a vegetarian diet can reduce the risks of several chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer compared to omnivorous diets.

There is also a worldwide call for reducing the consumption of animal products in an effort to tackle climate change.

Understanding hip fracture risk in vegetarians is therefore becoming increasingly important to public health.

Study co-author Professor Janet Cade, leader of the Nutritional Epidemiology Group in the School of Food Science and Nutrition at Leeds, said: “Hip fracture is a global health issue with high economic costs that causes loss of independence, reduces quality of life, and increases risk of other health issues.

“Plant-based diets have been linked with poor bone health, but there has been a lack of evidence on the links to hip fracture risk. This study is an important step in understanding the potential risk plant-based diets could present over the long-term and what can be done to mitigate those risks.”

The team used data from the UK Women’s Cohort Study to investigate possible links between diet and hip fracture risk. The national cohort of middle-aged women was established at the University of Leeds to explore links between diet and chronic disease, encompassing a wide range of different eating patterns. Dietary information was collected using a food frequency questionnaire and was validated using a 4-day food diary in a subsample of women.

At the time they were recruited into the cohort study, the women ranged in age from 35 to 69 years.

Effect of low BMI

The research team found that the average BMI among vegetarians was slightly lower than the average among the regular meat eaters. Previous research has shown a link between low BMI and a high risk of hip fracture.

Lower BMI can indicate people are underweight, which can mean poorer bone and muscle health, and higher risk of hip fracture. Further investigation is needed to determine if low BMI is the reason for the observed higher risk in vegetarians.

Study co-author, Dr Darren Greenwood, a biostatistician in the School of Medicine at Leeds, said: “This study is just part of the wider picture of diet and healthy bones and muscles in older age.

“Further research is needed to confirm whether there could be similar results in men, to explore the role of body weight, and to identify the reasons for different outcomes in vegetarians and meat-eaters.” (ANI)
