Hijab Ban In Karnataka

SC Reserves Order On Hijab Ban In Karnataka Schools

The Supreme Court on Thursday reserved its order on various petitions challenging Karnataka High Court upholding a ban on Hijab in educational institutes.

A bench of justices Hemant Gupta and Sudhanshu Dhulia reserved its judgment after the parties appearing from both sides concluded their arguments.

The arguments in the matter that continued for 10 days, involved 21 lawyers from the petitioner’s side and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj, Karnataka Advocate General Prabhuling Navadgi argued for the respondents.

The court was hearing several pleas against the Karnataka HC’s judgment upholding the state government’s decision to direct educational institutes to prescribe uniforms in educational institutes.

Addressing the court, Senior Advocate Dushyant Dave, in his rejoinder submission said that the Karnataka Government Circular which enforced a dress code has no reference to the Popular Front of India. Senior Advocate Dave was representing the petitioner.

Countering the submission of the respondent, the petitioner’s lawyer Senior Advocate Salman Khurshid said that the respondent’s arguments mentioned the examples of France and Turkey. Khurshid further said that anything that expresses religious belief is not allowed to be displayed in public including a cross.

Various petitioners have approached the apex court challenging the Karnataka HC order upholding the Karnataka government’s order which directs strict enforcement of schools and colleges’ uniform rules.

One of the appeals in the top court had alleged “step-motherly behaviour of the government authorities which has prevented students from practising their faith and resulted in an unwanted law and order situation”.

The appeal said the High Court in its impugned order “had vehemently failed to apply its mind and was unable to understand the gravity of the situation as well as the core aspect of the Essential Religious Practices enshrined under Article 25 of the Constitution of India”.

A bench of Karnataka High Court comprising Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, Justice Krishna S Dixit, and Justice JM Khazi had earlier held that the prescription of the uniform is a reasonable restriction that students could not object to and dismissed various petitions challenging a ban on Hijab in education institutions saying that they are without merit.

The Hijab row erupted in January this year when the Government PU College in Udupi allegedly barred six girls wearing the hijab from entering. Following this, the girls sat in protest outside the college after they were denied entry.

After this, boys of several colleges in Udupi started attending classes wearing saffron scarves. This protest spread to other parts of the state as well leading to massive agitations in several places of Karnataka.

As a result, the Karnataka government said that all students must adhere to the uniform and banned both hijab and saffron scarves till an expert committee decided on the issue.

On February 5, the Pre-University education board released a circular stating that the students could only wear the uniform approved by the school administration and that no other religious attire would be allowed in colleges. (ANI)

Congress President Post

Will Manish Tewari Also Contest For Congress President Post?

With Congress preparing to elect the successor of party chief Sonia Gandhi, former union minister Manish Tewari is the latest among the list of contenders speculated to be in the fray.

The party today issued an official notification announcing the schedule for the election to the post of party president. The elections are slated to be held on October 17 at all Pradesh Congress Committees, with results being announced on October 19, immediately after the counting of votes.

Sources close to the Sri Anandpur Sahib MP said on Thursday that he is considering throwing his hat in the ring after Sonia Gandhi made it clear that anybody can run in the poll.

Tewari’s consideration to contest comes amid the reports of several party top leaders being in the fray.

Tewari is part of the G-23, a group of dissenters who had written to Sonia Gandhi seeking reforms in the party.

Interestingly, he is the only leader from the group considering contesting for the Congress President post after the exit of veteran leader and group member Ghulam Nabi Azad on August 26 this year. The leader from Jammu and Kashmir had stepped down terming the organisational election process of the Congress as “a farce and a sham”.

“The entire organisational election process is a farce and a sham. At no place anywhere in the country have elections been held at any level of the organisation. Handpicked lieutenants of the AICC has been coerced to sign on lists prepared by the coterie that runs the AICC sitting in 24 Akbar Road,” Azad had written in his resignation letter to Sonia Gandhi.

He had also hit out at Rahul Gandhi in his letter.

Rahul Gandhi, who is currently on his Bharat Jodo Yatra is not likely to file nominations for the election.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot is one of the top picks of the Gandhi family as the successor to Sonia Gandhi, in case Rahul abstains from the race.

On September 19, Shashi Tharoor met Sonia Gandhi at her residence in the national capital where he expressed his wish to contest the polls to “make internal democracy” in the party stronger. Gandhi giving her nod to the Thiruvananthapuram MP, said that anybody can contest elections. Tharoor had also met with party’s Central Election Authority chairman Madhusudan Mistry on Wednesday.

Congress leader Digvijay Singh is likely to contest for the position of party’s national president, sources said today. According to sources, Singh will reach Delhi today, where he is likely to meet party interim chief Sonia Gandhi.

The election of the Congress president is slated for October 17 and the counting of votes will take place on October 19.

Mistry said those who want to contest for the post of president will need the signatures of 10 Pradesh Congress committee delegates.

Amid growing buzz about his nomination, Gehlot has said he is ready to discharge any responsibility given to him by the party. He met Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday. (ANI)

Indian Netas Have Always Had A Finger In the Sports Pie

Sudipta Biswas, a sports journalist and author of Mission Gold: India’s Quest for Olympic Glory, explains the political connection in sports governing bodies

Five years back, the Indian cricket administration underwent a massive upheaval when the Supreme Court intervened to bring an end to the alleged culture of fiefdom in the BCCI. Justice Lodha Committee was given the task to clean up the mess in the world’s richest cricket body. A year later, the apex court passed a series of recommendations and appointed a three-member committee, led by former CAG Vinod Rai, to bring all the recommendations to effect.

One of the key points of the recommendations was that no official will be eligible to contest the BCCI or state associations’ elections after serving two consecutive terms, either at the national board, or, as a combination of both.

However, six years later, the Supreme Court tweaked it to allow the current president, Sourav Ganguly, the former India cricket captain, and secretary, Jay Shah, the son of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, to continue to run the daily affairs of BCCI. Both Ganguly and Shah have completed the previously mandated two terms last year — which is six years — but have continued to hold their offices for months. They had previously served the Cricket Association of Bengal and Gujarat Cricket Association, respectively, in different capacities.

On September 16, 2022, the apex court allowed modification to this clause. Now, Ganguly and Shah can serve as BCCI members for two more terms, which, effectively means, another six years at the helm. That is, by the time they end their new terms, they will complete 12 years in office without serving a cooling-off period of three years.

This is a stark shift from the Supreme Court’s earlier status quo on cricketing matters of the country. Indeed, the court has agreed to change the clause for which it once repealed Anurag Thakur from the board. While allowing them to continue for another six years, the court has also allowed the BCCI to tweak a clause to allow politicians, who were not allowed to contest elections as per the Lodha Committee recommendations, to enter the cricket administration in the country yet again.

For years sports administrations in India have been run by politicians or businessmen. It has been a recent trend that sportspersons or former athletes are coming into the administration.

The latest development has come at a time when the highest court has been busy in cleaning up the mess at the National Sports Federations (NSF). Federations that didn’t accept the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports’ National Sports Code, formulated in 2011, are either facing suspension or being forced to align with the codes by the Supreme Court.

The All India Football Federations (AIFF), the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), and Hockey India (HI) are a few of these latest examples.

In the past, in most of these federations, officials with a direct or indirect link to the Congress party were running the offices for over a decade. In the recent AIFF elections, the BJP-backed candidate, Kalyan Chaubey, assumed the president’s post, while the IOA presidency went to Adille Sumariwalla, a former athlete who served the Athletics Federation of India. Sumariwalla too is reportedly linked to the ruling party.

Unlike these federations, the BCCI doesn’t fall under the NSF; it is an autonomous body under the Indian Societies Registration Act, 1860. It doesn’t necessarily need to adhere to the ministry’s mandate. Previously, the sports ministry tried to bring BCCI under its realm, but with two ‘likable people’ currently running the show at the board, that pressure no longer exists.

Stocks Tank, Rupee Falls Over US Fed Rate Hike Move

Indian stocks declined, though marginally, on Thursday morning in line with weak global cues, following yet another policy rates hike by the US Federal Reserve in its fight against high inflation.

However, a steep decline was likely cushioned as investors seemed to have already discounted the possible rate hikes by the US central bank.

At 9.33 am, Sensex traded at 59,303.96 points, down 152.82 points or 0.26 percent, whereas Nifty traded at 17,671.95 points, down 46.40 points or 0.26 percent.

“The big question from the Indian market perspective is whether India’s outperformance will continue in the present global risk-off context.” Investors can remain optimistic but be cautious since India’s valuations are on the higher side, “said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services.

“Financials, capital goods, select autos, telecom, and construction-related stocks can be bought on declines,” Vijayakumar said.

Meanwhile, the Indian currency rupee breached the psychologically crucial 80 mark again to touch another fresh all-time high of 80.44 against the US dollar against its previous day’s close of 79.97. This sharp depreciation was because of the current strength in the US dollar index.

The key policy rate in the US was raised by 75 basis points to 3.0–3.25 percent —which is the third consecutive hike of the same magnitude.

The US central bank seeks to achieve maximum employment and inflation at the rate of 2 percent over the long run, and it anticipates that the ongoing hikes in the target range will be appropriate.

Reacting to the rate hike move, stocks in the US fell nearly 2 percent to close the day.

Consumer inflation in the US, though, declined marginally in August to 8.3 percent from 8.5 percent in July but is way above the 2 percent goal.

Raising interest rates is a monetary policy instrument that typically helps suppress demand in the economy, thereby helping the inflation rate decline.

The US Fed statement added that the Committee’s future assessments would consider a wide range of information, including readings on public health, labor market conditions, inflation pressures and expectations, and financial and other international developments.

“Price stability is the responsibility of the Federal Reserve and serves as the bedrock of our economy.” Without price stability, the economy does not work for anyone. In particular, without price stability, we will not achieve a sustained period of strong labor market conditions that benefit all,” the US central bank’s Chair Jerome Powell, said in his opening statement after the latest monetary policy review meeting.

Powell added the central bank was moving our policy stance purposefully to a level that will be sufficiently restrictive to return inflation to 2 percent.

“We are highly attentive to the risks that high inflation poses to both sides of our mandate, and we are strongly committed to returning inflation to our 2 percent objective,” Powell said later in his opening statement.

On slowing the pace of rate hikes, the Chair said: “At some point, as the stance of monetary policy tightens further, it will become appropriate to slow the pace of increases, while we assess how our cumulative policy adjustments are affecting the economy and inflation.”

He added restoring price stability will likely require maintaining a restrictive policy stance for some time and a historical record cautions strongly against prematurely loosening policy. (ANI)

Popular Front Leaders

NIA, ED Arrest 100 Popular Front Leaders From 10 States

In a first-ever largest action, a joint team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Enforcement Directorate (ED), and state police forces have arrested over 100 Popular Front of India (PFI) leaders during raids across 10 states, said sources on Thursday.

The searches are being conducted at multiple locations in the largest ever investigation process till date.
These searches are being conducted at the residential and official premises of persons involved in “funding terrorism, organizing training camps, and radicalizing people to join proscribed organizations”.

“In a major action across 10 states, NIA, ED, and state police have arrested more than 100 cadres of PFI,” sources told ANI.

The raids were conducted in Telangana, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and many more states, said sources.

NIA earlier this month also raided 40 places in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh in a PFI case and detained four persons.

The agency had then conducted searches at 38 locations in Telangana (23 in Nizamabad, four in Hyderabad, seven in Jagityal, two in Nirmal, one each in Adilabad and Karimnagar districts) and at two locations in Andhra Pradesh (one each in Kurnool and Nellore districts) in the case relating to Abdul Khader of Nizamabad district in Telangana and 26 other persons.

In the operation, NIA had seized incriminating materials, including digital devices, documents, two daggers and Rs 8,31,500 cash.

As per NIA, the accused were “organizing camps for imparting training to commit terrorist acts and to promote enmity between different groups on the basis of religion”.

The PFI was launched in Kerala in 2006 after merging three Muslim organizations floated after the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992 – the National Development Front of Kerala, Karnataka Forum for Dignity, and Manitha Neethi Pasari of Tamil Nadu. After the demolition of the Babri mosque, many fringe outfits had surfaced in south India and PFI was formed after merging some of them.

Now the PFI claims it has units in 22 states. Its growth is phenomenal, admitted intelligence agencies, saying it successfully exploited a growing vacuum in the community by donning the role of a savior. The successful portrayal of the image helps PFI to mobilize funds, especially from the rich middle-eastern countries. The PFI had its headquarters in Kozhikode earlier, but after broadening of its base, it was shifted to Delhi. PFI’s state president Nasaruddin Elamarom is one of the founding leaders of the outfit. Its all-India president E Abubaker also hails from Kerala.

The PFI describes itself as a neo-social movement committed to empowering people belonging to minority communities, Dalits, and other weaker sections of society. (ANI)

Kashmir

Kashmir Rejects Terror, Separatism And Pakistan Agenda

Security Forces have almost drawn the last nail in the coffin of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir leaving the terror bosses sitting across the Line of Control (LoC) exasperated.

Recently, J-K Police arrested three hybrid terrorists, Waseem, Yawar, and Muzammil, for their involvement in the killing of Mohammad Amrez, a laborer hailing from Bihar. He was shot dead by the terrorists in August this year at Sadunara in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district.

The arrested trio, after questioning revealed that they had kept a watch on outside laborers and wanted to strike fear among them by such killings. They were in touch with a Pakistan handler code-named Babar, and Amreez’s killing was carried out at his direction.

After August 5, 2019–when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate J-K’s special status and bifurcated it into two Union Territories–terrorist bosses sitting in Pakistan have made desperate attempts to terrorize the people, especially the non-locals and the members of the minority communities.

Terrorists operating in Kashmir during the past three years have made desperate attempts to vitiate peace by targeting innocents. The arrested terrorists have revealed that their bosses sitting across the Line of Control have given them clear-cut instructions to kill people for conflict to remain alive.

The attacks on the members of minority communities and non-locals were carried out under a well-devised conspiracy to push them out of Kashmir so that 1990 like the situation is recreated but the minorities and non-locals have held their ground. They haven’t left Kashmir, nor have they got intimidated by the pressure exerted by the terrorists.

Swift action by security forces instills confidence

The swift action by the security forces against the terrorists has prevented the situation from taking an ugly turn. Terrorists who were involved in the killings of innocents have either been eliminated or arrested. The security forces acting tough against the killers instilled confidence among the people to stay firm in their fight against terrorism and the terrorists.

Terrorism in the Union Territory is on its last legs and the final assault has been launched to neutralize the terrorism forever.

Personnel of the Jammu and Kashmir Police along with the central armed forces have rendered invaluable sacrifices to defeat the elements sponsored by Pakistan. The security forces have achieved a lot on different fronts and jawans are working hard to ensure that normalcy in Kashmir becomes a permanent feature.

The work and sacrifices of the security forces have been acknowledged by the entire country, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, and others.

Hurriyat becomes history

It’s not only the terrorism that has been controlled, separatists, who used to act as advocates of Pakistan in Kashmir, have been cut to size. The Hurriyat Conference, funded by the terror bosses sitting across the LoC, has wound up its offices as there is no one left in Kashmir to carry forward the agenda of separatism and sedition.

To fill in the void a new chapter of the Hurriyat has been opened in Pakistan to provoke the people of J-K. However, its shutdown call on August 5 this year was totally ignored by the people of J-K. Instead, there were huge celebrations.

Terrorists based in Pakistan were using social media to instigate youth to foment trouble in the Himalayan region, but after the scrapping of Article 370, people in Jammu and Kashmir are not falling into their trap as they have understood that neither Pakistan nor the terrorists are their friends.

They have rejected the path of violence and their overwhelming participation in national events like Har Ghar Tiranga campaign and Independence Day celebrations is ample proof of the fact that no one in Kashmir is interested in what Pakistan is trying to preach.

All out efforts

The security forces are putting in all-out efforts to consolidate peace in J-K and no chance is being provided to anti-national elements to regroup and put Kashmir on the path of destruction again.

During the past three years, security agencies have dismantled the terror ecosystem which sustained the terror for 30 years. Terrorist supporters and sympathizers are being identified and nailed. The network of the overground workers that helped the terrorists to carry on with their nefarious acts has been trampled.

Politicians, who posed as nationalists and supported the separatists and Pakistan, have been cut to size and made to understand that the days to sail in two boats have ended. The government employees with separatist leanings have been told in clear terms that it’s the government whom they serve and they cannot indulge in any such activity which is against the national interest.

Spirit of nationalism

After 2019, the spirit of nationalism has been inculcated among the people. The alienation that prevailed during the rule of politicians has been addressed. The abrogation of Article 370 has made every Kashmiri realize that he is an Indian and the country cares for him.

The inculcation of nationalism has helped people of J-K to differentiate between friends and foes. The Himalayan region witnessing massive development in 3-years has made it clear that New Delhi always wanted J-K to prosper and come at par with other states across the country but the Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and Article 370 acted as biggest stumbling blocks.

Pak suffers severe blows

Pakistan has lost the proxy war that it fought in the Himalayan region. Till 2019, it kept J-K on the precipice through its stooges. But in the last three years it has suffered consecutive blows as the present dispensation led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is no mood to compromise with the terrorists, their sponsors and their advocates.

The security forces have been given a free hand to wipe out terrorism from J-K and a mechanism has been devised to ensure that terror doesn’t raise its ugly head again.

The Ministry of Home Affairs led by Amit Shah is directly monitoring anti-terror operations in the Union Territory and is providing all the support to the security forces to end the era of bloodshed in Jammu and Kashmir.

Terrorist handlers based in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir have given clear-cut instructions to the terrorists to keep on spilling the blood but their nefarious designs are being foiled on a daily basis by the security agencies.

Jammu and Kashmir have changed after its complete merger with the Union of India as the terrorists have lost local support and their agenda is finding no takers. A new dawn has already broken in the Himalayan region and the end of terrorism is not that far away. (ANI)
