Rajpath, Central Vista Lawns to be Renamed ‘Kartavya Path’

The government has decided to rename the historic Rajpath and central vista lawns in New Delhi as ‘Kartavya Path’, sources said on Monday.

“Government of India to rename New Delhi’s historic Rajpath and Central Vista lawns as ‘Kartavya Path’,” a source said.
The sources said that New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has convened a special meeting on September 7 with the objective of renaming the Rajpath and Central Vista lawns as Kartavya Path.

Rajpath was formerly known as Kingsway. It is the celebrated venue of the Republic Day parade every year and stretches through Vijay Chowk to India Gate.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his Independence Day speech this year, had given ‘panch pran’ (five vows) call to citizens during ‘Azadi Ka AmritKaal’ and one of the resolves was “duty of the citizens”. He had also stressed on the abolition of symbols relating to colonial mindset. Both these factors can be seen behind the naming of ‘Kartavya Path’.

In his speech, the Prime Minister urged people to focus attention on ‘Panch Pran’ for the coming 25 years.

“You have to concentrate on your resolve and strength. And we must take up the responsibility of fulfilling all the dreams of the freedom fighters by embracing those ‘Panch Pran’ by 2047 when the country celebrates 100 years of independence,” he said.

Speaking of ‘Panch Pran’, he said that the first vow is for the country to move ahead with a big resolve and make India a developed country,.

“The second pran is that in no part of our existence, not even in the deepest corners of our mind or habits should there be any ounce of slavery. The third pran is that we should feel proud of our heritage and legacy. Fourth pran, which is equally important, is unity and solidarity. The fifth pran is the duty of the citizens, in which even the Prime Minister, Chief Minister cannot be exclusion as they are also responsible citizens and have a duty towards the nation. This virtue is going to be the vital life force if we want to achieve the dreams we have for the next 25 years,” he had said.

Elaborating on the fifth resolve, he said there should be success in the life of the individual, of the society, of the family, of the nation.

He said while it is the job of the government to make efforts to provide 24 hours electricity, it is the duty of the citizen to save as many units as he can.

“While trying to understand all the countries in the world that have made progress; every country that has achieved something, even in personal life, few things emerged. One is disciplined life, and the other is devotion to duty. There should be success in the life of the individual, of the society, of the family, of the nation. This is the fundamental path and the fundamental vital force,” he said.

“It is the job of the government to make efforts to provide 24 hours electricity but it is the duty of the citizen to save as many units as he can. It is the responsibility and efforts of the government to supply water to every field, but a voice should come from each of my fields that we will move forward by saving water by focusing on ‘per drop more crop’,” the Prime Minister said.

He said if everyone performs the duties of a citizen, the country can achieve the desired goals ahead of time.

“It is our duty to do chemical-free farming, organic farming and natural farming. Whether it is police or people, ruler or administrator, no one can be untouched by this civic duty. If everyone performs the duties of a citizen, I am sure that we can achieve the desired goals ahead of time,” he said. (ANI)

Nitish Meets Rahul, Discusses 2024 Poll Strategy, Denies PM Ambition

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the national capital on Monday and discussed the strategy for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha polls and the possibility of bringing like-minded parties together.

According to Congress sources, Kumar, who met Gandhi for the first time since his reunification with the Mahagathbandhan, of which Congress is a part in Bihar, expressed gratitude to the Wayanad MP for his party’s support to his government.
The sources also said that both the parties will continue their “concrete discussions” in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls.

The Bihar Chief Minister also met former Karnataka CM and JDS leader HD Kumaraswamy during his visit to Delhi.

The meeting comes amid the buzz that Kumar is attempting to project himself as the prime ministerial candidate in 2024. However, he cleared the air on the matter.

Kumar, once again in Delhi, called for Opposition unity and ruled out harbouring prime ministerial aspirations.

“If the opposition will get united, then a good atmosphere will be created. I have no desire and no aspiration (to become prime minister),” the Bihar CM told the media.

The meeting of Kumar with Opposition leaders comes days after Telangana Chief Minister KCR visited Bihar and held discussions on the political scenario in the country.

However, during KCR’s one-day visit, he avoided giving a direct response to a question about whether Nitish Kumar will run as the opposition’s candidate for Prime Minister, saying that the opposition parties would meet and make that decision.

While talking to the media during his visit to Bihar, KCR was asked whether Bihar CM Nitish Kumar will be the next PM candidate for the opposition.

He dodged a straight response and said that all the opposition parties will come together and then finalise the PM candidate.

KCRF also lashed out at the Centre for the “faulty policies” including inflation and said the BJP is insensitive towards the needs of the state.

Rao said that Nitish Kumar is a big leader and the Centre has not even fulfilled its promise of granting special status to Bihar.

Taking a dig at the Centre, KCR said, “Before the Modi-led BJP government, Rupee never depreciated so much. Why do farmers have to protest for over a year? The country faced losses in every sector due to the failures of the policies implemented by the Centre.”

KCR went ahead and criticised the BJP’s mission of eliminating all opposition parties from the political arena. “It is a shame that the ruling party says that they will finish all other political parties,” he added. (ANI)

Liz Truss UK PM

Liz To Become UK PM, To Start Cutting Taxes From Day One

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has beaten former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak, winning the ruling Conservative Party’s leadership contest.

Truss, 47, will meet Queen Elizabeth II for the “kissing of hands” ceremony with the monarch on Tuesday. After being formally asked by the Queen to form a government, Truss is to become Britain’s third female prime minister after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May.
Notably, all female prime ministers so far have been Conservative.

Truss has also worked for three former prime ministers. She was promoted by David Cameron to environment secretary and worked as justice secretary under Theresa May. She was eventually made foreign secretary by Boris Johnson in 2021.

An Oxford graduate, Truss had worked for 10 years in the energy and telecommunications sectors before entering politics.

Truss, who was elected as a Conservative member of parliament in 2010, has served in various government departments since 2012, including international trade secretary and minister for women and equalities. In September 2021, she became foreign secretary.

Truss is married with two children.

Liz Truss is the Member of Parliament for South West Norfolk and Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs. Liz has also been appointed Minister for Women and Equalities.

Born in Leeds to left-wing parents, Liz broke the mould and started her career as an economist and accountant with a Conservative membership card. She was elected as a councillor in Greenwich in 2006, and then as MP for South West Norfolk in 2010. She was one of the first MPs of her intake to enter Government in 2012.

She went viral after a speech she made about cheese. Before she entered the leadership contest, many knew her from a speech at the Tory Party Conference in 2014 where she enthusiastically promoted British cheese and pork.

Since then she has been an Education Minister, Secretary of State for the Environment (proudly championing the virtues of British cheese), Justice Secretary, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade, as well as Minister for Women and Equalities.

A staunch defender of South West Norfolk’s interests, she has fought many successful campaigns for the area, including the dualling of the A11, the F35 fighter jets to be based at RAF Marham and for better rural broadband.

Liz is passionate about giving every child basic maths and science skills, and recently provided funding for more maths teachers, a premium for schools whose students study maths, and the extension of the Maths Schools programme.

Liz is not afraid to speak her mind and believes liberating people to start and grow businesses without burdensome red tape is the key to our economic future. She has argued strongly against the Big State policies of Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party, which she believes will damage choice, innovation and prosperity.

As Chief Secretary, Liz was tasked with keeping a watchful eye on the public finances and driving productivity in public services, so taxpayers get the most for every pound spent. She travelled to Japan, South Korea, Brazil and Chile to see how countries around the globe are turbocharging economic growth, controlling public finances and delivering world-class public services.

In July 2019, Liz became Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade. As International Trade Secretary, Liz was charged with securing new trade deals and partnerships across the world. As Minister for Women and Equalities, Liz is responsible for cross-government equality strategy and legislation.

In September 2021 Liz was appointed Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs.

She’s pledged to “start cutting taxes from day one”. This includes scrapping the National Insurance increase that came into force in April, and suspending green taxes from energy bills to help people cope with increasing costs.

Truss voted Remain in the Brexit referendum, but after the result, she changed her mind and declared Brexit an opportunity for the UK. She was popular amongst Brexit-supporting Conservatives in the leadership election. (ANI)

‘Boycott Or Cancel Culture is The Coronavirus of Bollywood’

Pankaj Narayan, a producer and filmmaker in Mumbai, tells LokMarg that Bollywood filmmakers are facing a crisis which is driven by a political ideology

Film industry is going through hard times. It has witnessed a downward phase in the past too but this time the crisis is qualitatively different because it is primarily a political one. The Boycott Brigade is just one dimension of this crisis.

When a small producer like me decides to make a film, our first brief is like- kya chal raha hai aajkal? Now talking of the trend, one cannot predict what would click. This is the age of going ‘viral’, not hit. For example, a Bhojpuri film starring Khesari Lal Yadav Rowdy Daroga has better box office collections than Aamir Khan’s Lal Singh Chaddha and Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan.

Let me share a recent incident. I had drawn the basic layout for a movie which would be titled Ravan Ki Love Story. As the producer of this project, I pitched for Nawazuddin in the lead role and discussed it with one of my prospective financiers. The financier, after listening to all the details, was apprehensive to come on board. He said: “First, the title of this movie may trigger a controversy and second, on top of that you have Nawaz (a Muslim) in the lead role. What do you want? To get my bones broken?”

I can cite many such incidents where you cannot state a specific reason for films being aborted, tanking on box office or any content going viral. As far as I understand, just three types of content is getting traction: regional vulgar content, ultra-nationalist theme and religious content. You can easily understand the reason behind the success of The Kashmir Files. It was supported by the political establishment. Same applies to the films that were doomed at the box office. They were boycotted. Even Akshay Kumar was boycotted when they trolled him calling Canada Kumar.

Filmmakers who do not subscribe to these viral content, suffer. The problem is essentially political because this is the first time ideological differences have seeped into a micro level. Not only films, in journalism or any other socially responsible profession, we can see this binary. This divided viewer and reader has made the content creation risky.

A cinematic content is appreciated or criticised only when one gets to see that work. Nowadays viewers are first fed with a political perception through propaganda, then they resort to cancel culture etc over a flimsy issue. This boycott culture is proving to be the Coronavirus of the film industry. I have been making a remake of devotional songs to survive. Same is with many other creators. We are not sure what a lyricist would offer. How much return would it give? The problem is same even with big banners like Yashraj, etc. Only the size and scale are different.

Yashraj Films may give five flops back to back and still survive. The smaller producers are destined to be doomed. Startups will also struggle. The hidden fallout of this political crisis and boycott culture is the untimely and silent death of new talent and enterprises, for the lack of ‘oxygen’. Content is not going to save them because there are no takers and financers.

Pak: Starving Flood Victims Face Infectious Diseases

Pakistan’s alarming flood situation pose a risk of hunger and disease for hundreds and thousands of flood-affected people left scrambling for shelter and aid after the devastating rains in the country.

660,120 have reported various illnesses at government-run medical camps in flood-affected areas since July, Dawn newspaper reported citing the July-September data.
According to government data, skin ailments and diarrhoeal diseases are rampant in flood-affected areas — a total of 149,551 reported with diarrheal diseases while 142,739 people reported with skin infections.

A total of 132,485 cases of acute respiratory disease, 49,420 cases of suspected malaria, 101 cases of snake-bite and 550 cases of dog-bite, the Pakistani newspaper added.

Dawn’s report said there were 185,274 cases of other illnesses.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) today said that over 1290 lives lost and 12,500 people injured. Over 33 million affected, including over 6.4 million in dire need of humanitarian aid. Almost 634,000 displaced people living in camps.

Over 1460 health facilities affected, of which 432 are fully damaged and 1028 are partially damaged. Access to health care facilities, health care workers and essential medicines and medical supplies is limited.

Ongoing outbreaks of acute watery diarrhoea, typhoid, measles, leishmaniasis and polio are at risk of being further exacerbated.

Increased transmission of malaria remains a threat and many cases are already presenting to clinics in the flood-affected areas.

Early disease surveillance indicates that tens of thousands have been identified as patients affected by diarrhoea, malaria, acute respiratory infections, skin and eye infections, typhoid and others.

Dr. Ahmed Al-Mandhari, WHO’s Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, said they are following closely and with deep concern the humanitarian crisis currently facing the people of Pakistan as a result of devastating monsoon floods.

“The current scale of damage and destruction due to the floods is like none seen before in Pakistan – a result of long-term global climate change leading to more severe weather conditions,” said Al-Mandhari.

He said tens of millions of people are now forced to use unsafe water, both to drink and for their daily needs; they are also exposed to the elements due to flood damage and destruction of their homes, and many are displaced.

“This has resulted in increased exposure to diseases already circulating in the country, including acute watery diarrhoea, malaria, dengue fever, typhoid, measles and leishmaniasis,”

he added.

According to WHO, early disease surveillance reports are already showing an increase in cases of diarrhoea, malaria and typhoid. Other diseases in the country, such as polio and COVID-19, are also at increased risk of spreading if the situation is not rapidly contained. (ANI)

Arshdeep Is Inspiration For Youth: Punjab Sports Minister

“Arshdeep Singh an inspiration for youth”: Punjab Sports Minister speaks to pacer’s mother

Punjab Sports Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer on Monday spoke to the mother of Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh, who is currently representing the Indian team at the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 in UAE.

The 23-year-old Indian pacer is under pressure for dropping an important catch in the 18th over of Pakistan’s innings against India in the Super Four phase clash while the former were chasing 182 runs. Singh had dropped Asif Ali, who took full advantage of the lifeline given to him as Pakistan hit Bhuvneshwar Kumar for 19 runs in the next over. Arshdeep Singh was given the chance to bowl in the final over defending seven runs, but was unsuccessful.
Though Singh returned with good bowling figures of 1/27 in 3.5 overs, his dropped catch caused immense anger among fans, many of whom took to social media to troll and abuse the young pacer.

Minister Meet Hayer said to the pacer’s mother Baljit Kaur over the phone that he will “personally welcome” the pacer on his return to the country and the entire state of Punjab and the country are with Arshdeep.

“Arshdeep is a talented player of our country and the team’s captain turns to him when it comes to bowling on important occasions. Arshdeep is a source of inspiration for the youth,” he said.

“Victory or defeat is given in game. @arshdeepsinghh is upcoming star who carved out niche in a short span. Performed excellent against Pakistan. Regressive psyche to troll him on drop of just a catch. Arshdeep is future of nation. Inspiration for youth. Hate has no place in sports,” tweeted the minister.

Coming to the match, put to bat first by Pakistan, India put on 181/7 in their 20 overs. Virat Kohli registered his second consecutive half-century of the tournament, hitting a solid 60 off 44 balls. Captain Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul also hit quickfire 28 runs each and registered an explosive 54-run opening stand.

Spinner Shadab Khan registered the best bowling figures for Pakistan, taking 2/31. Pacers Naseem Shah, Mohammad Hasnain and Haris Rauf took a wicket each. Mohammad Nawaz also got a wicket.

Chasing 182, Pakistan lost skipper Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman for cheap. But Mohammed Rizwan and Mohammad Nawaz put on a 73-run stand to keep their team alive in the game. After Nawaz’s dismissal for 42 off 20 balls and Rizwan’s dismissal for 71 off 51 balls, Team India revived their chances in the game.

But Khusdil Shah (14*) and Asif Ali (16) posted vital contributions to take their side across the finishing line with one ball to spare by a margin of five wickets.

Ravi Bishnoi (1/26) and Arshdeep Singh (1/27) were the pick of bowlers for India. Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Yuzvendra Chahal also took a wicket each.

Nawaz won the ‘Man of the Match’ award for his all-round performance of 42 runs and 1/25.(ANI)

Human Trafficking At Spike In Pak Due to Economic Turmoil

Pakistanis who are fleeing rising inflation and unemployment in the country are crossing borders through illegal means as a result of which they often fall prey to the smugglers who kidnap them for ransom, media reports said.

According to the Pakistan local media outlet, The Nation, the country is going through a double whammy — the rising inflation and unemployment which has become a serious cause of concern as it is ending up in the surge of human traffickers who tries to exploit their poverty.
As the saying goes, desperate times call for desperate measures. These needy and desperate Pakistanis are willing to take any risk in search of a better life. They resort to risky ways of exiting the country when they are unable to access legal channels of migration.

The transnational smugglers take huge ransoms from these illegal migrants. Sometimes it cost the people their lives with transnational smugglers squeezing them to pay more than Rs 500,000.

To evade these dire situations, sometimes these people trek through mountainous terrains and no-man’s-lands. Most of these young men endure gruelling journeys to the ‘promised land’ of Europe, grasping for an economic lifeline as jobs dry up in their country.

But theirs is a failed journey, often result in more suffering as gangs lurk in darkness for potential victims. While many are nabbed at the borders of Iran and Turkey – which have become transit countries for illegal migrants – and deported to Pakistan, others walk themselves into death after authorities in Greece use disproportionate force to push them back toward Turkey.

Greek security forces on the border with Turkey are also using dangerous green lasers to deter migrants and refugees from crossing. Once detected by the radars, many refugees are thrown into panic and lose their life in their vain attempts to escape.

Sources privy to the surging murky business of human trafficking told The Express Tribune that many greedy agents in Punjab’s districts such as Wazirabad, Gujrat, Hafizabad, Sialkot, Lala Musa and Jhelum are sending many innocent people, who are unaware of the dangers of the routes, to European countries via Iran and Turkey.

Many of these smugglers work in cahoots with networks based in Turkey and Iran.

As if this was not enough, many of these young men, broke and desperate, fall into the hands of gangs in Istanbul who take advantage of the undocumented status of the migrants and kidnap them for ransom.

Already impoverished, many of these broken families have no option but to pay a hefty sum to send their sons abroad through these illegal channels to lift them out of the thicket of poverty.

As for those who are caught at the Turkish border and sent back, face the music back home at the hands of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

In this regard, the FIA officials said that actions are being taken against those who send them illegally to foreign countries and they are also being punished by the courts.

“People have lost their family’s savings by naively falling for the dreams sold by agents,” an FIA official lamented, adding that instead of going to foreign countries via illegal means, people should learn skills for a better and bright future. (ANI)
