A young, working woman, going home with a friend on a scooty, after a New Year eve get-together, is dragged for hours, trapped in the underbelly of the car, on the desolate midnight streets of West Delhi, by men loaded with machismo, money

No Antidote For Toxic Masculinity!

Some things just refuse to change, even in the acche din of ‘New India’! They come back like a memory frozen in cold blood in this biting cold wave, and life goes on just as before in a bitterly ritualistic scenario where the stunning lack of empathy strikes the deepest core of humanity like the icy north wind cutting into the flesh, as if with a sharp knife.

A young, working woman, going home with a friend on a scooty, after a New Year eve get-together, is dragged for hours, trapped in the underbelly of the car, on the desolate midnight streets of West Delhi, by men loaded with machismo, money, and, perhaps, unlimited alcohol. One of them reportedly has connections with the ruling party at the Centre.

Even while multiple versions come forth, sometimes in brazen contradictions, for instance regarding the identity of the driver, with or without a licence, and that if the music was too loud inside the car, etc, it is widely believed that the drivers knew what they were doing. However, what is striking is the manner the entire episode was enacted for such a long time, pointing to the inherent barbarism enclosed in the deepest recesses of a society.

Why did the killers keep driving, apparently taking the same route again and again, reportedly trying to jerk the woman away from the underbelly of the car, instead of helping her, if, it was, truly, an accident? What drives human beings, inebriated or otherwise, to enact such a prolonged public spectacle of cold-blooded murder and in such a terribly grotesque manner, unimaginable even in the most inhuman, perversely secret, viciously sadistic fantasies? What is the kind of upbringing they have had that compelled these men to instinctively behave in such a manner? What kind of schools and colleges did they go to, what were their family and social values, what kind of friendships did they cultivate, how did they relate to other women, their friends, classmates, sisters, strangers?

The cops are so predictable in Delhi that their conduct too follows a pattern, and it, seemingly, remains unchanged. Since 2014, under the muscular dispensation in Delhi, they seem to have become more predictable. Be it their tacit silence when ABVP goons brutally attacked JNU students and at least one teacher with rods etc, including the woman president of the JNU Students’ Union, her head smashed, blood all over her face! Or the manner the Delhi Police went berserk in Jamia Millia Islamia, attacking students for their peaceful dissent, so much so, entering the library and beating the hell out of shocked students immersed in reading. Remember that viral moment of male cops, trying to beat up girl students in Jamia, for absolutely no rhyme or reason, and the students defying them with a totally unafraid and brave act of non-violent defiance – a true act of Satyagraha?

The partisan conduct of the Delhi Police during the violence which rocked Northeast Delhi in the midst of the peaceful and massive anti-CAA protests across the country has been pointed out by critics. Remember that Muslim boy being forced to sing the national anthem? Remember the cops throwing stones along with the Hindutva mobs? Remember the homes and shops of one community being ravaged, so openly and brazenly?

Remember a police officer, standing in abject silence, as a small-time ex-AAP-turned BJP leader, spewed venom as a public spectacle? Or, when, a BJP politician, later rewarded with a Union minister’s post, made a public declaration, brazenly instigating violence, during the non-violent protests by the mothers and sisters of Shaheen Bagh, against the communal and anti-constitutional CAA: ‘Goli maaro… ko!” Did anything happen to these politicians or the goons who attacked the JNU students?

ALSO READ: ‘Police Action In Jamia Exposes Beti Bachao…’

If anything, this case uncannily reminds of the BMW case in which the son of a powerful family with big connections was involved. Did he stop to help the injured, some of them cops manning a barricade? Did he call a helpline, the police or an ambulance – or try to pick up the injured and rush them to a hospital? Instead, he and his friends went back to a safe home, got the servants to wash the car, removed all the traces of human flesh and blood on it, and life was happily lived ever after. Indeed, his and his friends’ life continue to be a happy-ever-after saga.

While many fear that the killers in the car which dragged the woman this New Year eve might eventually escape punishment, amidst the haze of hazy evidence, the big questions remain. In this disturbing bitter realism of a Hobbesian, brutish and nasty realm, no one is safe, especially women, with scores of men getting drunk inside their cars, in what is popularly called ‘Carobar’. Not only can they drive rash and turn the car into a killer machine, but, together, in a macho and mindless gang, many of them have the potential to celebrate a kind of savagery unimaginable in any civilized society.

More than that is the stunning lack of empathy. The eye-witness kept calling the cops – so what happened? He saw the car again and again, kept calling, and even chased the car – so what happened?

Remember how Nirbhaya, totally brutalized, and her friend, assaulted and smashed, were lying on the ground on a street as scores of cars passed by and no one even stopped by to help? At least that tragedy created a huge storm in Delhi and elsewhere with that bus stop in Munirka in South Delhi, where JNU students protested with candles again and again, becoming a tragic milestone of a tragic memory. However, has the reality of that brutal night changed for the better in the capital of India? It does not seem so.

However, there are stories of hope and inspiration. If not in Delhi, then from far-away America. And there are lessons for all of us.

Amidst the fierce snowstorms in sub-human temperatures stalking America recently, the ‘Independent’ of London reported about Sha’Kyra Aughtry, an Afro-American mother of three, who is rightfully being hailed as a ‘true angel’. If she and her boyfriend had not moved out of the cozy safety of their home into the deadly blizzard on a dark dawn, risking her life, the life of a developmentally disabled man who was lost in Buffalo at Christmas could never be saved.

The newspaper reported: “She saw Joe White, 64, caught in a snow bank and being buffeted by strong winds and heavy snowfall. She cut off White’s socks as they had become frozen to his legs, and used a hairdryer to thaw his frozen pants. The couple fed him and tried to treat his hands for frostbite, which had begun to turn gangrenous, and piled blankets on him to try to keep him warm. Aughtry contacted White’s sister, his only living relative, and staff at the North Park Theater cinema house where he has worked as the custodian since 1980…With Buffalo’s streets paralyzed under 50 inches of snow and emergency vehicles unable to reach the house for more than 24 hours, Aughtry took to Facebook on Christmas Day to plead for help in getting White to the hospital…”

Soon, after seeing her Facebook posts, neighbors joined in and cleared the snow. She took White to a hospital. His life was saved.

As a tribute to her, her boyfriend, and the community which responded collectively in this moment of crisis in trying to save the life of an unknown man who lost his way in the snowstorm, the North Park Theatre announced that they would hold a film show in honor of Sha’ Kyra and all others. No wonder, in the media and amidst her community, she is being hailed as an ‘angel’. An inspirational role model, who showed exemplary empathy and selfless courage, in saving the life of a fellow human being.

Ashwani Mehta, an Indian Navy veteran and a social worker based in Lucknow, says India has learnt its lessons from past Covid waves and is positioned well to handle any health calamity

‘Hybrid Immunity Will Help Us Tackle A Fresh Covid Wave’

Ashwani Mehta, an Indian Navy veteran and a social worker based in Lucknow, says India has learnt its lessons from past Covid waves and is positioned well to handle any health calamity

Covid-19 pandemic was a challenge not just for India but for the entire world. We indeed suffered a lot because of population density but a strong leadership at the centre and our robust medical research infrastructure helped us come out of the tragedy stronger. We not only developed an effective vaccine in record time but also produced and delivered serum to many countries.

As far as the new variant of the COVID -Omicron sub-variant BF.7 is concerned, we are well prepared and better positioned to handle any possible surge in future. The pandemic era taught us some lessons and the progress that India has achieved over the past few years has left the world astonished. India has set an example for generations to follow.

Looking at the situation in China, things have again started deteriorating due to a renewed surge. The Chinese authorities are reeling under the fresh wave and, in spite of trying to hide figures, a very high number of casualties.

Mehta says India has no reasons to fear a new surge

In comparision, India has no reasons to fear or to go on the back-foot as infection in India is currently under control. We belong to a generation that was left on the ground (mitti) to play… this helped us develop natural immunity. Post-Covid, a large part of our population has got vaccinated. Thus, we have among us a hybrid immunity – a combination of vaccination and natural immunity. As far as the backlashes of the new variant of the Corona virus is concerned, we are at safe. Therefore India is in a better position to fight the pandemic than China.

Having said that, I request our fellow countrymen to get vaccinated and if they already have, get the booster dose. According to the ICMR study, 65 to 70 percent of the population was affected by the wave of corona that had come to the fore in India. In some states, the number was even higher. Experts believe that this vast spread has created herd immunity.

Some such studies have also come out where it is mentioned that due to both natural and corona vaccine, the immunity will remain effective for a long time. Most people in India have acquired this immunity through dual contagian. Yet, as a responsible citizen, I request every Indian to remain prepared to fight against all any probable calamities and contribute to the nation building.

World Cup in Rourkela

Need To Beat Wales, Responsibility On Forwards: Mandeep

The Indian hockey team is all set to take on Wales in their third Pool D match of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2023 on Thursday here at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
The Tokyo Olympic bronze medallists will have to beat Wales by a big margin especially if England beat Spain in the other Pool D match in order to finish on top.

“Definitely it is a very important match which we have to win by a big margin. We played well against Spain as well as against England but the goals were not coming out. You can say that luck was not our way. The team was playing well but the ball was not going to the goalpost. We have worked on it and seen our videos too where to create space and from where to hit. We have worked on it in the last few days and the idea is to get a good outcome in the next few games,” said Indian hockey team forward Mandeep Singh.

Defender Nilam Sanjeep Xess too is focused and is also aware of the fact that India will have to not only beat Wales but they will have to hand them a crushing defeat in order to top Pool D.

“Our planning is to win against Wales by a margin of 8-10 goals,” said Indian defender Nilam Sanjeep Xess while speaking to ANI.

Indian hockey team beat Spain 2-0 in their first match of the ongoing World Cup in Rourkela on Friday while their match against England on Sunday was a goalless draw.

“Definitely for forwards, the responsibility is to score goals. It is not that we have to play individually to score goals. We have to play as a team and pass the ball where needed in order to score the goal. We have to get either PC or a goal going into the ‘D’. If we get PC then we have one of the best drag flickers to score goals,” explained Mandeep Singh.

The Indian hockey team has not been at their best in terms of penalty corner conversion in this tournament so far but the experienced forward Mandeep feels that will change with the team from now onwards playing all their matches in Bhubaneswar.

“The ground in Rourkela was not conducive for our drag flickers. The ball was not coming onto the stick the way it should come. But this ground is different and faster and I think our drag flickers will score goals,” explained Mandeep Singh.

Young Indian defender Nilam Sanjeep Xess is playing his first World Cup and to add to it he is playing it in his home state Odisha.

“I am very happy that my first World Cup is in my home state Odisha that is why I am very happy. It feels great to play with so much of the crowd coming to support you. So, it is a great feeling,” said Nilam Sanjeep Xess while speaking to ANI.

Fans have been coming in huge numbers to support the Indian hockey team and here in Bhubaneswar also it will be no different.

“I would like to tell the fans to come and support us and we would like to give our best to win the match,” said Mandeep.

If India tops their pool then they will not have to play the cross-over match and moreover, they will face a relatively easier opponent in the quarter-final.

India hockey squad: Abhishek, Surender Kumar, Manpreet Singh, Hardik Singh, Jarmanpreet Singh, Mandeep Singh, Harmanpreet Singh (captain), Lalit Upadhyay, Krishan Pathak (GK), Nilam Sanjeep Xess, PR Sreejesh (GK), Nilakanta Sharma, Shamsher Singh, Varun Kumar, Akashdeep Singh, Amit Rohidas (vice-captain), Vivek Sagar Prasad and Sukhjeet Singh.Reserve players: Jugraj Singh and Rajkumar Pal. Process To Declare ‘Ram Setu’ National Heritage Underway: Centre To SC

The Central government on Thursday told the Supreme Court that the process to declare ‘Ram Setu’ a national heritage monument is currently underway in the Ministry of Culture.

A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala allowed BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, seeking direction to the government to declare ‘Ram Setu’ as a national monument, to file representation to the Ministry on the issue.
The apex court said the Ministry will inform the court about the decision taken by the Centre.

The order of the apex court came after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the bench that the process is currently underway in the Ministry of Culture.

He said that Swamy may submit additional communication if he may so wish.

When the CJI said that Swamy can meet the concerned person, he said, “I do not want to meet anybody if they do not want to. We are in the same party, it was there in our manifesto. Let them decide in six weeks or four weeks…”

The bench then disposed of the plea and granted liberty to Swamy to approach the top court if he is aggrieved by the decision of the Ministry.

Swamy had earlier said that the case has been pending for eight years but the government has not been able to respond to the plea.

In his plea, Swamy had urged the apex court to pass an order and direct the “Union of India along with National Monuments Authority (NMA) to declare Ram Setu as an Ancient Monument of National Importance.”

He had also urged the top court to pass an order and direct the “Union of India to engage the Geological Survey of India and Archeological Survey of India to conduct a detailed survey with respect to Ram Setu as an Ancient Monument of National Importance.”

Swamy said that he has already won the first round of the litigation in which the Centre accepted the existence of ‘Ram Setu’ and added that the union minister concerned had called a meeting in 2017 to consider his demand to declare the Setu as a national heritage monument but subsequently nothing happened.

Ram Setu is a chain of limestone shoals between Pamban Island, also known as Rameswaram Island, off the south-eastern coast of Tamil Nadu, and Mannar Island, off the north-western coast of Sri Lanka. (ANI)

Aruna Miller Becomes First Indian-American To Be Elected Lt Governor Of Maryland

Aruna Miller Becomes First Indian-American To Be Elected Lt Governor Of Maryland

Hyderabad-born Aruna Miller made history by becoming the first Indian-American politician to be elected as the lieutenant governor of the US state of Maryland.

Miller was sworn in as the 10th lieutenant governor of the state on Wednesday.
Miller, 58, a career transportation engineer in her inauguration speech credited her success to her family who had immigrated to the United States from India. Her father,a mechanical engineer was the first to arrived in the US in the late 1960s as a student before he brought the rest of his family and she arrived in the country in 1972 as a 7-year-old.

Upstate New York became home to her parents and two siblings, a brother and a sister. Her father was an engineer for IBM, according to a report in the Washington Post.

She was part of a historic Democratic ticket that sailed to victory in November last year and also gives Maryland its first Black governor, its first Black attorney general and its first female comptroller, the Post reported.

Miller has served two terms in the Maryland House of Delegates from 2010 to 2018. She also ran for congress but lost, according to the daily.

During her oath-taking ceremony, an emotional Miller shared the story of her arrival from India and made a special mention of her unforgettable first day of school.

“None of them looked like me. And I couldn’t speak a word of English, but I wanted to fit in. So when we went to the cafeteria, I had a plan. I was going to do exactly what everyone else was doing,” Miller recounted.

“So I ate American food for the first time. I drank cold milk for the first time in my life. I was feeling pretty good. I thought okay, I think I went over all these classmates of mine. They’re my friends now. I walked back to the classroom and proceeded to vomit all over the desk. I was mortified. My teacher called my mom who came to pick me up. And I told her I want to go back to grandma who raised me in India,” Miller recalled.

The newly sworn-in Lt Governor, who took her oath on the Bhagwat Gita, said that as a woman of colour she spent most of her life trying to fit into a space that didn’t have her in mind as an immigrant or a woman of colour.

“As an Indian American legislator in a legislature that looked nothing like me. It took me a long time to realize that it was never about needing to fit into a space created by others. It was always about having the courage to be my authentic self in every space,” said Miller who had become a US citizen in her 30s.

After taking oath of office, Miller also thanked her parents and siblings. “To my mom and dad who took a leap of faith to come to this country because they believed in the promise of America, to my siblings, you were the best part of my childhood. And I thank you and I love you for always being there,” she said.

Miller’s victory is also due to her popularity among Indian Americans in the state of Maryland where several Republican, pro-Trump supporters came out to extend their support to her.

Miller spent 25 years working at the local Department of Transportation in Montgomery County, Maryland, to improve the safety of the public and create equitable transportation access.

From 2010 to 2018, she represented District 15 in the Maryland House of Delegates, where she worked to create legislation to invest in STEM education, streamline the regulatory process for small businesses and advocate for working families, survivors of domestic abuse, and the environment.

After becoming a citizen of the country in 2000, for the first time she voted in the US presidential election. Gradually, she was pulled towards the politics of the state of Maryland and the country. (ANI)

Delhi Flight

Singapore-Bound Flight Takes Off Without 35 Passengers, DGCA Orders Probe

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered a probe into how a Singapore-bound flight took off hours ahead of schedule, leaving behind 35 passengers at the Amritsar airport.

The probe was initiated by the aviation regulatory authority after a Scoot Airline flight which was originally scheduled to depart at 7.55 pm on Wednesday from the Amritsar Airport took off at 3 pm, hours ahead of its departure time.
This triggered chaos at the airport with angry passengers who were left behind staging a protest. They registered their complaint with the authorities concerned at the airport.

After Airport authorities contacted the airline officials they were informed that the passengers were informed about the change in flight time via e-mail.

“Around 280 passengers were to travel to Singapore but 253 passengers were rescheduled, leaving behind over 30 passengers,” the Amritsar airport Director told ANI.

The DGCA has sought details from both Scoot Airline which is a Singaporean low-cost airline and a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore Airlines and the Amritsar Airport authority.

According to the airline, all the passengers were informed about the change in timing via email

An airport official told ANI that the travel agent, who booked the tickets for 30 people in a group, had not informed them (passengers) about the change in flight timings due to which the airline flew with the passengers who had reported on time.

Meanwhile, a similar incident was also reported recently from Bengaluru airport when a Go First Delhi-bound flight took off leaving behind 55 of its passengers who were on their way to the flight via a shuttle bus.

The passengers who were left behind were reportedly accommodated on another flight four hours later.

The DDCA issued a show cause notice to the Chief Operation Officer of Go First airlines as to why enforcement action should not be taken against them for dereliction of their regulatory obligations. (ANI)

UP: Girls Denied Entry In College For Wearing Burqa

Some students of the Hindu college in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad were denied entry to the college for wearing a burqa despite the prescribed uniform code for the students here.

The girls have alleged that their college was not letting them enter the college campus wearing a burqa and are compelling them to remove it at the entrance gate.
On the said matter, a scuffle broke out between the students, the Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha workers, and the college professors who remained adamant about sticking to the prescribed rules. A video of the scene from the Hindu college has been making rounds on the Internet.

Meanwhile, the college professor, Dr. AP Singh said that they have implemented a dress code for the students here, and anybody who refuses to follow it will be barred from entering the college campus.

To this, the members of Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha submitted a memorandum to include the burqa in the dress code for college and allow the girls to attend their classes wearing it.

Earlier in January 2022, a similar situation rose in Karnataka when the massive Hijab protests broke out, where some students of Government Girls PU college in the Udupi district of the state alleged that they had been barred from attending classes. During the protests, some students claimed they were denied entry into the college for wearing hijab.

Following this incident, students of different colleges arrived at Shanteshwar Education Trust in Vijayapura wearing saffron stoles. The situation was the same in several colleges in the Udupi district.

The pre-University education board had released a circular stating that students can wear only the uniform approved by the school administration and that no other religious practices will be allowed in colleges.

The matter was then taken up to the Karnataka High Court which dismissed various petitions challenging a ban on hijabs in educational institutions and said that wearing a Hijab is not an essential religious practice of Islam.

However, when taken to the Supreme Court, the apex body on October 13, 2022, pronounced a split verdict in the Karnataka Hijab ban case.

The arguments in the matter went on for 10 days in which 21 lawyers from the petitioners’ side and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj, Karnataka Advocate General Prabhuling Navadgi argued for the respondents. (ANI)

chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexually harassing

WFI Prez Called Me ‘Khota Sikka’, Sexually Harassed Girls: Vinesh Phogat

Indian wrestler and Commonwealth Games medalist Vinesh Phogat on Wednesday alleged that coaches who are favourites of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) misbehave with women and harass them. She also accused the wrestling federation chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexually harassing girls and calling her a ‘khota sikka’ after her defeat at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

On the sidelines of a sit-in protest against the WFI near Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, Phogat said, “Coaches are harassing women and some coaches, who are favourites of the Federation, misbehave with women coaches as well. They sexually harass girls. The WFI president has sexually harassed many girls.”

“After my defeat in the Tokyo Olympics, WFI president called me a ‘khota sikka’. The Federation mentally tortured me. I would entertain thoughts of ending my life every day. If anything happens to any wrestler, the WFI president will be to blame,” she added.

The protesting wrestlers further accused the WFI of interfering with their personal lives and exploiting them.

“When we went to the Olympics, we did not have physio or a coach. After we started raising our voices, we were threatened,” added another wrestler.

Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia said the wrestlers want the management of the Federation to be sacked and replaced.

“We hope Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) and Home Minister (Amit Shah) will support us in our quest,” added Punia.

Olympians Bajrang Punia, Sakshee Malikkh and Vinesh Phogat led the protest at Jantar Mantar against the WFI, alleging “harassment of wrestlers by the WFI through its arbitrary rules and regulations”.

A 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Bajrang Punia said the wrestlers will not tolerate the ongoing dictatorship of the Federation.

“We would not tolerate the ongoing dictatorship,” Bajrang told ANI.

The first Indian woman wrestler to win a gold medal at both the Asian and Commonwealth Games, Vinesh Phogat, expressed her displeasure with the Federation’s management on Twitter and other wrestlers including Bajrang and Sakshee also took to Twitter to raise their voices against governing body of the sport in the country.

“The players want self-respect as they prepare for the Olympics and other big events with full vigor. However, if the federation does not support them, their morale breaks down. But we won’t bog down anymore and will fight for our rights,” she wrote in a tweet.

Meanwhile, Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) Assistant Secretary, Vinod Tomar on Wednesday said he was not aware what ace wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Sakshee Malikkh, Bajrang Punia and others were protesting about.

He added that once the wrestlers approach the Federation, all the issues will be resolved and sorted out.

“Do not know what this is all about. However, we came to know from the letter to the WFI president that some wrestlers are sitting in protest. I have come to ask them about their problem,” Tomar told ANI.

Tomar stated that once the wrestlers formally approach the Federation, all issues will be sorted out.

However, he claimed the protesting wrestlers still haven’t taken the Federation into confidence about their issues.

“They have not yet told me what their grouse is. No issue has been raised with me or the Federation as yet,” he added. (ANI)

China’s Covid Death Figures Far From Morbid Reality

With the meteoric rise in China’s Covid cases in recent weeks and a dearth of Covid data emanating from the country, questions have been raised about the actual numbers of cases in relation to official Chinese figures presented to the world.

On Saturday, China announced that nearly 60,000 Covid-19 deaths were reported since the country lifted its strict “Zero Covid Policy” on December 7, last year.
However, these figures contradict a research report published by the National School of Development of Peking University that said that 900 million people, or 64 per cent of the total population in China, had been infected as of January 11, Asia Times reported.

60,000 figure was only 7 per cent of the number of normal deaths in China, given that 10.14 million people died in mainland China in 2021, according to a Guangdong-based writer. The writer said the figure could not explain why funeral services in major cities had been so numerous as to strain facilities since mid-December.

The number of Covid deaths in China may have reached 584,000 so far and could reach 1.7 million by the end of April, Asia Times reported citing UK-based health data firm Airfinity.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus last week spoke with Minister Ma Xiaowei, director of China’s National Health Commission about the COVID-19 situation in the country and sought deeper cooperation on the origins of the pandemic.

“Spoke with Minister Ma Xiaowei about the #COVID19 situation in #China. I appreciated the release of detailed information, which we request they continue to share. Asked for the sharing of further sequences and cooperation on understanding the virus origins,” WHO chief tweeted.

The phone call came on the same day as China announced that nearly 60,000 Covid-19 deaths were reported since the country lifted its strict “Zero Covid Policy”, state media outlet Global Times reported.

On the call on Saturday, Tedros reiterated the importance of China’s deeper cooperation and transparency on understanding the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic, and in carrying out the recommendations detailed in the report of the Strategic Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens.

In a statement posted on its website, WHO said Chinese officials provided information to WHO on a range of topics, including outpatient clinics, hospitalizations, patients requiring emergency treatment and critical care, and hospital deaths related to COVID-19 infection.

The WHO requested that this type of detailed information continue to be shared with them. Additionally, they noted the efforts by Chinese authorities to scale up clinical care for its population at all levels, including critical care.

The UN health agency said it would continue to work with China, providing technical advice and support and analysing the situation. (ANI)

Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC)

Sachin Pilots Questions CM Gehlot Over R’sthan Paper Leak

In fresh trouble in the Rajasthan Congress, party leader Sachin Pilot on Wednesday attacked the Ashok Gehlot government over the exam paper leaks case.

While not naming the Rajasthan chief minister, Pilot, addressing an event in Jhunjhunu on Wednesday, said, “We welcome the government’s decision to investigate the paper leaks case. However, it’s hard to believe that no Congress leader or government official is not involved in the leaks.”

Taking a dig at the CM, with whom he had a public falling out in the wake of the Rajasthan political crisis in 2020, Pilot said the government should explain what was the ‘magic’ which saw the leaked exam papers landing up with students without the involvement of any leader or government official.

“It has been said that the exam papers were kept inside a vault. So one wonders what magic went into them landing up with students without the involvement of any (Congress) leader or politician,” the former Rajasthan deputy chief minister said.

He added that responsibility should be fixed in the paper leaks case and those involved should be identified and brought to book.

On Tuesday, too, Pilot had raised questions on the leak of question papers for recruitment exams in Rajasthan.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, he said, “I was saddened and anguished after learning of the paper leaks. Repeated paper leaks compromise the future of our youth. It doesn’t matter who the culprit is, a strict investigation should be conducted to stop the recurrence of such paper leaks.”

In December, the Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) canceled the competitive examination for the recruitment of 2nd-grade teachers for 2022. The exam was rescheduled for January 29.

After at least half a dozen major examination paper leaks have rocked Rajasthan since the Congress came to power in 2018.

The Opposition, led by the BJP, has accused the Gehlot government of failing to curb the menace. (ANI)
