Kanjhawla Case: Registered FIR In Theft Case At Anjali’s House

Delhi Police has registered an FIR in the case of burglary at the house of Anjali Singh, the 20-year-old woman who died on January 1 after the scooter she was driving was hit by a car which then dragged her for several kilometres in the Outer Delhi area.

The reported burglary took place in the Karan Vihar house of the Kanjhawla death case Victim Anjali and the police registered an FIR in the matter on Monday.
“An incident was reported at Police Station Aman Vihar around 8.30 am today regarding a burglary at a house in Karan Vihar, Delhi by Kanta (Anjali’s grandmother). The woman lodged the complaint of stolen LED TV, some clothes and utensils. An FIR has been registered in this matter. Further investigation is underway,” a police official said.

Police added, a team from the Aman Vihar police station immediately reached the spot and found the lock of the door of the house was broken. “Crime team was called at the spot and the scene of the crime was inspected minutely,” police said.

Earlier family members of Anjali alleged that the deceased woman’s friend Nidhi, an eyewitness in the case was involved in the theft.

Speaking to ANI, Anjali’s sister said on Monday morning, “Our neighbours first informed us about the theft around 7.30 am in the morning. When we came here, we found the lock to be broken. The LCD TV and other household items, stacked under the bed were missing. The television is new. It has been two months since we purchased it.”

Another family member questioned the role of the Delhi Police. “Why was there no police yesterday in front of the house? Police had been there for the last 8 days but yesterday no one was there. We feel Nidhi is behind the theft.”

Previously Anjali’s maternal uncle claimed, that her friend Nidhi, the eyewitness in the case had hatched a conspiracy by claiming Ajali had been drunk on the day of the accident. His response came against the backdrop of claims by Nidhi to the media that Anjali was drunk on the day of the incident.

“Nidhi was hidden previously. Now she has surfaced after Anjali’s last rites. When the incident happened, did not she have the humanity to report it to the police or family? She was scared then. Is she not scared now? This is Nidhi’s conspiracy,” Anjali’s maternal uncle told ANI.

He said Anjali did not have a drinking habit and her friend was lying. “My niece did not have a drinking habit. If she was drunk that night (when the incident happened) as per Nidhi’s claim then the postmortem report would have mentioned that. It means Nidhi is lying,” he said.

20-year-old Anjali was killed in the early hours of January 1 after her scooter was hit by a car that dragged her for over 12 kilometres from Sultanpuri to Kanjhawala in Delhi.

An examination of the CCTV footage has helped the Delhi Police in tracing and recording the statement of Nidhi who was riding a pillion with the deceased at the time of the accident.

Seven persons accused in the case are now in the custody of Delhi Police.

A total of 18 teams of Delhi Police are investigating the case. (ANI)

Joshimath: ‘Unfit For Living’ Buildings Painted With Red X

With the prevailing situation in Joshimath grim in the wake of the land subsidence incident, the Chamoli District Magistrate Himanshu Khurana said all dangerous buildings in the holy town have been marked with a red ‘X’ symbol.

After the district administration declared these buildings as “unsafe areas which are unfit for living”, the residents have been shifted to a safer place.

“Under the Disaster Management Act, we have marked some unsafe areas which are unfit for living. These areas include Sindhi Gandhinagar and Manohar Bagh,” Chamoli District Magistrate Himanshu Khurana told ANI on Monday.

Joshimath has been declared a ‘sinking zone’ in the wake of continuing land subsidence, with several homes and roads developing cracks over the last few days, driving residents outdoors and triggering fear.

Located at a height of 6150 feet (1875 m), Joshimath is a gateway to several Himalayan mountain climbing expeditions, trekking trails, and popular pilgrim sites like Kedarnath and Badrinath.

More than 600 houses in the area have developed cracks in the wake of the landslide and subsidence, officials said.

Taking note of the situation, the Centre constituted a team of experts from seven different organizations to study and submit its recommendations after a high-level meeting on Joshimath.

The experts from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), National Institute of Disaster Management, Geological Survey of India, IIT Roorkee, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, National Institute of Hydrology, and Central Building Research Institute have been tasked with assessing the situation and giving recommendations on preserving the holy town. Be Cautious While Broadcasting Disturbing Content, Govt To TV Channels

Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Monday issued an advisory to all television channels against reporting incidents of accidents, deaths, and violence including violence against women, children, and elderly in a manner which grossly compromises on “good taste and decency”.

The advisory has been issued after several instances were noticed of what the ministry said was a lack of discretion by television channels.
The Ministry has said that television channels have shown dead bodies of individuals and images or videos of injured persons with blood splattered around, people, including women, children and the elderly being beaten mercilessly in close shots.

Besides, several TV channels showed continuous cries and shrieks of a child being beaten by a teacher, shown repeatedly over several minutes including circling the actions thereby making it even more ghastly, without taking the precaution of blurring the images or showing them from long shots.

The Ministry has observed that in most cases the videos are being taken from social media and broadcast without editorial discretion and modifications to ensure compliance and consistency with the Programme Code.

The Ministry highlighted that the manner of reporting such incidents is distasteful and distressing for the audience.

“…such reports can also have an adverse psychological impact on the children. There is also a crucial issue of invasion of privacy which could be potentially maligning and defamatory, the advisory has underlined,” the ministry said.

Television, being a platform usually watched by families in households with people from all cohorts – old-aged, middle-aged, and young children – places a certain sense of responsibility and discipline among the broadcasters, which have been enshrined in the Programme Code and the Advertising Code.

The Ministry also mentioned various examples of recently broadcast content.

Raising concern over such broadcasts and in view of the larger public interest involved and having regard to the nature of the audience of television channels including the elderly, women, and children, the Ministry has advised all private television channels to attune their systems and practices of reporting incidents of crime, accidents, and violence, including death in conformity with the Programme Code. Book on Indian Navy Evolution

Indian Navy@75 – The Rime of The Modern Mariner

When a Task Force of the United States Navy’s 7th Fleet headed by USS Enterprise sailed into the Bay of Bengal in December 1971, ostensibly to counter a Soviet flotilla but actually to impact the ongoing conflict in favour of close ally Pakistan, it was India’s hour of reckoning. Till high-octane diplomacy helped, the only defence arm protecting the Bay, and carrying out assaults in the Arabian Sea, was the Indian Navy, a tiny force by the two superpowers’ reckoning.

“What would have happened had you come face-to-face with the Enterprise?” Looking back, then Eastern Command chief, Vice Admiral N Krishnan’s response to the question this writer put a month after the conflict is immaterial. What remains is the supreme confidence on the face of that chubby sailor in the Navy’s hour of glory and its long-awaited, full-blooded participation in a war that India won.

That hour, the centuries that took to build it, and the Navy’s evolution over the next 50 years are vividly recorded by Commodore (retd) Ranjit B Rai, co-author Aritra Banerjee and dedicated contributors in The Indian Navy@75… Reminiscing the Voyage. An individual’s labour of love, it deserves a warm welcome. Rai’s many books done earlier and his naval museum to record India’s naval prowess make him a worthy sailor storyteller.

Rai was a rare witness to some of the Navy’s ‘sea-mark’ moments, from Goa’s liberation to the 1971 war to the operations in Mauritius, Seychelles, Madagascar, the Maldives and then the disastrous Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka. A former Director, Naval Operations (DNO) and Director, Naval Intelligence (DNI), he adopts an autobiographical style even as he tracks down his peers and shipmates, long after their retirement to construct a narration that, given India’s notorious lack of a sense of history, could otherwise drown in the whirlpool of time.

It has not been easy in a country that has always faced adversaries from the north. The common Indian psyche is to think of the soldier and the airman, much less the sailor. Launching “Make in India”, it has perforce indigenized, more than the two other services.

It still needs emphasizing that the Indian Ocean has always occupied a vital place in India’s national security and economic prosperity, more now as it has risen on the world stage. The Indian Ocean’s waters wash the shores of 40 countries and have four strategic choke points and 90 per cent of India’s trade by volume, and 85 per cent of oil imports for India come by sea. Half of the world’s container and one-third of the world’s cargo traffic pass through this region.

Perceptions have changed. The British thought IN was not “mature enough” to acquire submarines, till the Russians stepped in. Australia was alarmed over India’s “blue water ambitions” in the 1980s. Now it partners the Navy along with US and Singapore and in the IN’s outreach, including the Malabar naval exercises.

The book stresses that over time, the Navy has gained importance as the 21st century is predicted to be a Maritime Century and the centre of gravity of the world has shifted East, with the rise of China and India.

ALSO READ: Know Your Sea, Cadet

Yet, for long years the Navy remained the “silent Cinderella” when it came to allocating funds. Ships and submarine acquisitions suffered long waits. The inter-service rivalry forces ‘silence’. On writing on the Navy’s wish list, pre-Budget, for a Mumbai paper in 1983, this writer’s editor was requested by the then Western Command chief, late Admiral R H Tahiliani, to ask me to pipe down a bit. Mercifully, the Navy has now been given ₹47,590.99 crore ($7 billion) for capital spending in 2022-23 and is tasked to be the net security provider in the IOR.

No other service has had to change the basics as much as the Navy. Rai tells you how a question from Soviet Admiral Sergei Gorshkov visiting INS Nilgiri in 1960, “where’s the weaponry?” prompted the Navy to alter its British-based philosophy to Russia on weapons fit. He traces the IN’s journey from the British, to the Russians and now, many others in the new century to reach the world class.

The Navy evolved from buyer to builder post-1972 but its limitations remain. Cmde. (retd.) Uday Bhaskar notes that while it can design ships (few other nations do), build the hulls and develop some of the missile systems, it still imports most of the gadgetry and weaponry that make a ship sea and combat-worthy.

As the only service that has to work outside the territorial boundaries and on the high seas, the Navy’s challenges lie there and far outweigh its progress. Take just the aircraft carrier. After six decades of refitting foreign ones to its needs, it has just acquired its first indigenous one. Late-coming China has three and is projected to possess five or six by the 2030s.

Indeed, China’s advent into the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) poses the biggest security threat that India must tackle. The reality is that IN could pulverise Karachi port and harbour in 1971, and blockade it in 1999 during the Kargil conflict and in 2001 when the Indian Parliament was attacked. Now, the Chinese presence and a heavy stake in the shape of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor are bound to prevent such a recurrence.

As the only military service that operates outside the country’s borders and on the high seas, IN plays a key diplomatic role, of hard and ‘soft’ variety. Rai correctly says IN is a necessary adjunct to the foreign office and matches its diplomatic objectives far and near. Its noblest mission, of course, was in 2004, to reach, within 12 hours of the Tsunami, Indonesia and the Malacca Straits, its guns covered, not blazing, on a disaster relief mission.

As Defence Advisor posted in Singapore in 1991, Rai takes the widest possible picture of India, then on the cusp of historic economic reforms. He narrates his experiences when Manmohan Singh under P V Narasimha Rao and with Montek Singh Ahluwalia, marshalled the much-needed resources. India began to “Look East” and it is just as well that it now “Acts East.” As emphasized by Harsh V. Pant, this is where its security lies given the need to counter China’s pushy advances.

The Indo-Pacific has become crucial to India’s statecraft as evidenced by the Prime Minister’s articulation of Sagar (Security And Growth for All in the Region), and Mausam and Sagarmala. The changing security architecture in the maritime Indo-Pacific with the rise of China and QUAD behoves the Government and the Navy to review India’s maritime strategy and the strength of platforms it needs, and swiftly provide the funds.

Modi Should Be Pitted Against An Opp Face In 2024: Owaisi

All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi has said the BJP will have a clear edge over the Opposition forces in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections if a particular face is pitted against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In the latest episode of ‘Podcast with Smita Prakash’, the AIMIM chief said the Opposition needs to galvanise in each Lok Sabha constituency to defeat the BJP.
Owaisi said, “The Opposition should look to put up a tough fight for all the 540 parliamentary constituencies. If a single opposition face fights against BJP, the latter will benefit. If it’s Modi versus (Arvind) Kejriwal or Rahul Gandhi, the PM would be at an advantage.”

In 2019, the Opposition had formed a grand alliance in a bid to unseat the Modi government. However, the alliance did not succeed in its objective and eventually fell apart.

With the focus now on the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the AAP recently claimed the battle for 2024 will be one between Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The AAP claimed that the BJP and PM Modi are shaken by Kejriwal’s growing popularity, his model of governance in the national capital and the AAP expanding electoral footprint in the country.

A known baiter of the BJP at the Centre, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, too, remodelled his party, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi into the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and got recognised as a national party in a bid to upstage the saffron party in the LS polls.

On whether Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee should be pitted against PM Modi, the AIMIM chief said, “Mamata Banerjee (recently) held a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. So one is not certain if she should be the Opposition face against PM Modi.”

The West Bengal CM had earlier called on the chief ministers of all Opposition-ruled states to come together and put up a united fight against the BJP in 2024.

“CM Banerjee passes a resolution in the Parliament against BJP, but then praises PM Modi,” said the AIMIM chief. (ANI)
