Daughters Of Dudhwa Reclaim Forest Land

Daughters Of Dudhwa Reclaim Forest Land

They dance with the north wind, as if the cool forest breeze is caressing their movements like an Edgar Degas painting of graceful ballerinas. Slow and soft, they move in a circular rhythm like the many petals of a spring flower, and you can almost hear the wind as they dance with its flow.

At other times, they work very hard, much before the crack of dawn, nourishing their fertile land. At other times, they sit around the fire and tell ancient, forgotten stories, their faces full of warmth; their eyes shining in the nocturnal fire. At other times, they reclaim their land and forests, and lead a peaceful resistance, unprecedented in Adivasi history in Independent India.

Inside the core tiger zone of the dense forests of the Dudhwa National Park on the Indo-Nepal border, near the lush green sugarcane fields in Lakhimpur Kheri and Pilibhit in the Terai of Uttar Pradesh, Tharu women and men are at the vanguard of a protracted, non-violent struggle. Their struggle is for the implementation of the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act — FRA — and for the sovereignty of the Gram Sabha, guaranteed by Parliament and enacted by the Congress-led UPA 1 government in December 2006.

The adivasi communities in around 46 villages with no lack of water and abundant forest resources, are in the midst of a silent transformation. “We believe in the Indian Constitution,” says young Sahwaniya, leader of the Tharu Adivasi Mahila Mazdoor Kisan Manch, who is doing her Masters and drives a motorcycle in the thick of the forest. “Why is the Forest Department not allowing us the benefits of the FRA? Why is it so rigid and predictable? Why do they refuse the legitimacy of the Gram Sabha? Why do they deny us the right to forest produce, when we are the original inheritors of this ancient land of our forefathers, when we actually preserve and protect this vast range of the forests, the wildlife, rivers and water-bodies, because we love our forests and land, and all those who live here?”

Sahwaniya’s angst is shared by most adivasis in the villages deep inside the national park, especially women. They are unanimous that the Forest Department routinely harasses them, threatens them of police cases and jail, and once there has been a major skirmish too. This has always been a pattern.

This is because the Tharus enter the forest to collect the tall grass (ghas phoos) which they use to build homes and cattle-shelters since decades, ‘jaloni’ (wood) scattered on the ground for cooking and for warmth during winter days and nights, wild fruits and vegetables, and herbs which they use as medicine.

They claim that many of their herbs are more effective than modern medicine – like Pipli for cough and cold, which grows abundantly around their homes, Kaalmukti, the leaves of which can be a cure for diabetes, and another herb which is effective against cancer.

Besides, there is no economic scarcity. They grow fruits, vegetables, pulses, sugarcane and foodgrain throughout the year. Education levels are abysmally low in many villages, though some villages have girls and boys studying in towns nearby, also in Bareilly and Delhi. Many girls and women drive motorcycles and cycles and public transport is largely absent. Says Sahwaniya, “I often drive alone deep inside the forest. What is the fear – this is our homeland. The tigers know us, and keep their distance. We have sighted them since we were children. We too respect them, and keep our distance. It’s a peaceful co-existence.”

Said Beermati of Kajaria village, “Once the forest department attacked us when we were cutting grass. They took away our sickles with which we were cutting grass. All male guards. What is their problem, attacking women like that?”

Not only forest produce, fishing, for instance, is prohibited. So several villagers led by Phoolmati Rana of Bhooda village, a feisty leader who died young of a serious illness, led several villages to a pond to do fishing. “The forest guards took aim with their guns. Phoolmati went forward and said, ‘Come, kill us’. “They were forced to back out,” said Pratap Singh, former pradhan of Bhooda. “Why are we not allowed to do fishing in a pond which has been a collective water resource since decades?”

Women in Kajaria village and its neighbourhood, with their organized Kisan Manch leading it, under the auspices of the All India Union of Forest Working People, have now chosen a unique method. They write to the authorities in advance, including the district magistrate, that they will enter the forest on a particular day to collect ghas-phoos and wood. Then several women, in hundreds, gather together, and enter the forest. And, until now, they have not faced any obstacle from the forest department in the face of this collective, peaceful action.

Surprisingly, one can see hardworking Nepali women, also Tharus, from across the border, cross over to India and collect wood. Locals do not object but they allege that often Nepali women have to bribe the forest department to collect wood. They say: “If we are not allowed to collect wood in our own land as Indians, why do they allow Nepalis?”

The winds of change are blowing in Dudhwa amidst the tall trees. “In almost 22 villages, we have spread social awareness about the Gram Sabha and FRA. In our strongholds, they are now unable to harass us,” said Sahwaniya, who is part of the struggle since her childhood. Her father, Jawahar Rana, is a legend in the area. He was one of the original leaders of this peaceful movement, along with veteran Ramchandra, which started in the 1990s. Rana was arrested and allegedly brutally assaulted by the police. After his imprisonment, his health deteriorated, though he was still leading the struggle. During the lockdown of Covid, he died.

Sahwaniya’s beautful village is neatly organized in aesthetically designed mud huts, like most Tharu homes, constructed with architectural finesse, often with no doors and open-to-sky courtyards, and made with natural resources. They store food in storage rooms, in huge mud containers, anticipating a drought or natural catastrophe.

Surma, surrounded by dense forests and spread across sprawling fields of mustard, dhan, vegetables and fruits, was once the epicentre of the movement. “We fought in the courts, we appealed to the government and political parties, we waged a prolonged non-violent struggle. They were just hell-bent to throw us out from our ancestral village. Finally, we won the battle.

However, they are still denying us our fundamental rights – there is no electricity here. Not an iota of development has touched this village because they want to victimize us,” said Sahwaniya. Most adivasis believe that things were not so bad under the British. They would come and enjoy, or do hunting, and leave the indigenous communities in peace. Says Nevada, young leader from Suda village close to river Mohana on the India-Nepal border, which routinely floods the villages of Sohnah, Nijhota, Biriya, Kajaria, Bankati, among others, “Earlier, every village had to give huge amounts of foodgrain (in quintals), garlic, vegetables, chicken, etc to the forest department because there was terror all around. Since we have organized ourselves, we have refused to follow this illegal system. Obviously, they hate us for asserting our rights. Why should they take the fruits of our hard labour?”

According to Rajnish, leader of the Union who has worked in the belt for many years, recently the Tharus took a delegation to the district administration with pictures of several trees which were felled, thereby proving that there is a huge timber mafia operating in the protected park. The entire apparatus went into a tizzy. The nexus was out in the open.

As we move on bikes through the thick of the forest, a young mother walks back home with her little school-going daughter. Another woman passes by on a cycle, the ‘kudal’ and sickle, balanced on her shoulder. “We live happily in our beautiful forest. There is no fear of predators. And we love it,” said Sahwaniya, perched on her bike.

Reel-makers, Influencers Compromise Safety & Scruples For Views

Reel-makers, Influencers Compromise Safety & Scruples For Views

Chandni Pratap Singh, a child rights activist, says short videos makers are often uploading inappropriate content to draw viewers and there is little screening of such videos. Her views:

In this era of social media and Instagram influencers, the trend of making short videos and reels has become common. You can watch these clips on various video-sharing platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram or other similar websites. However, in this frenzied race for instant popularity, many of these influencers make a mockery of traffic rules, legalities and public etiquettes.

Recently, an Instagram influencer from Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad learned this the hard way after she stopped her car midway on a highway to make a reel. She walked alongside a busy road, striking poses which distracted road-users. As her video drew sharp criticism, the Ghaziabad Police tracked her down and slapped a fine of ₹17,000 for violating road safety laws. Of late, police are screening CCTV footage to nab such miscreants and bringing them to heel, but for every one violators caught, there are ten others who go scot free.

These video makers have thrown caution, safety, law and social behavior out of the window to grab a fistful of views. In this race for viewers, they knowingly or unknowingly promote dangerous stunts, use of nicotine, alcoholism, abusive language and even violence. And this content is virtually open to all, including children of impressionable age. Law authorities must wake up to this menace and bring an end to such attention-seeking theatrics.

Chandni with children at her NGO Voice of Slum

At times these influencers promote brands without even understanding their authenticity. They do this to make easy money, get free PR products and of course views. The products recommended by them could be unhealthy, low quality and addictive. But the brands and the influencers couldn’t care less. Besides, their content can influence young age-group and normalise violence, cuss words and unsafe sexual behavior. The line drawn between socially acceptable and unacceptable is being erased.

The other day I came across a reel that automatically led me to another video showing vulgar moves by a transgender. Clearly, no one keeps a check on this kind of content being uploaded on the platform. The online platform must have some sort of screening before a video goes live on their site.

Let’s accept it, we live in a world where we often handover the iPads or tablets to children in the belief that they will watch cartoons and similar content. However, even popular cartoon shows portray violence in a comical but acceptable manner. They promote repetitive, unpunished, and realistic violence, which can desensitize children to others’ sorrow, pain, and promote racial, gender, and other stereotypes.

I understand that there are several filters and parental control buttons that are available on these platforms. However, there shall be a certain age limit to access the full functions of the social media platforms. Child-friendly laws and scrutiny by the government agencies to control the menace of social media addiction in children is required. We hope that the government understands that children, especially teenagers, need to channel their energy into creative things.

Strangulation Of Democracy: Cong After Rahul Disqualified From LS

Strangulation Of Democracy: Cong After Rahul Disqualified From LS

The Congress party on Friday came down heavily at the Centre over the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi as a Lok Sabha member, calling it a “strangulation of democracy” while exuding confidence that the disqualification will be revoked through a stay on his conviction by a higher court.

The party alleged that Rahul’s disqualification is part of a “pattern” to stop him from speaking out against the Central government and also an attempt to divert public attention from real issues.
Gandhi was disqualified as a member of the Lower House earlier on Friday, a day after his conviction by the Surat court in a defamation case for a remark using the ‘Modi surname’ at a rally in Karnataka ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters in the national capital, Congress national spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi and senior leader Jairam Ramesh lashed out at the Centre over the disqualification of the former national party president.

“The issue before us is political, more than it is legal. It is a political issue because it signifies the systematic, repetitive emasculation of democratic institutions by the ruling party. It signifies the strangulation of democracy itself. We know that defamation is an exception to free speech, but over the last several years, we have had repeated examples of unthinkable assaults on freedom of speech, more importantly, freedom after speech. We all know that Rahul Gandhi has been speaking fearlessly inside and outside Parliament. He is paying a price for it,” Singhvi said.

He said that the government is resorting to new methods to “throttle” Rahul Gandhi’s voice.

“This government is rattled because he clearly speaks with facts and figures on demonetisation. Be it the supposed clean chit to China, or the GST, he is consistently aggressive and open in his questioning. Therefore this government is finding new techniques of throttling his voice,” Ramesh alleged.

On the severe criticism by the BJP following Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on Indian democracy in the UK recently, Singhvi said the Congress leader is not entitled to speak freely on grounds of “fake and imaginary nationalism”.

“Rahul Gandhi goes abroad, he is not entitled to speak freely on grounds of fake nationalism, created imaginary nationalism. He comes back and his speeches abroad become the basis of action against him inside Parliament. All of this is part of a pattern to stop him (from speaking out against this government), to divert public attention from the real and burning issues before the nation today. It is also intended to create a fear psychosis among those who dare to question this government,” he said.

Singhvi said Rahul will emerge victorious in the higher court in the defamation case.

“We are confident that we will get a stay on his conviction, which will, in turn, remove the very basis of this disqualification. We have full faith in the law. We believe we will emerge victorious in the near future,” he said. (ANI)

Kareena, Boman, Jaaved Hint Sequel To ‘3 Idiots’

Looks like something is brewing between the star cast of Rajkumar Hirani’s blockbuster film ‘3 Idiots’.

On Friday, actors Kareena Kapoor Khan, Boman Irani and Jaaved Jaaferi took to their social media handles and dropped some videos in which they hinted at a sequel to the comedy-drama film ‘3 Idiots’.
Taking to Instagram, Kareena shared a video of herself talking about Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi and R Madhavan coming together for a press conference while she was holidaying with Saif Ali Khan, Jeh Ali Khan and Taimur in Africa.

In the video, she said, “This press conference clip that is going around is from that secret that these three are keeping from us. I think there’s something fishy and please don’t say that they are coming for Sharman’s movie promotion. I think they are cunning for a sequel. This smells like a sequel for sure.” She ended her video by adding that she is calling Boman Irani.

Earlier in February 2023, Aamir, R Madhavan and Sharman reunited for a special video to promote the ‘Golmaal’ actor’s film ‘Congratulations’ which created a lot of buzz around the sequel of ‘3 Idiots’.

Soon after Kareena shared the video, actor Boman Irani also took to his Instagram account and posted a clip in which he said, “Whatever you guys are upto is out already and the clip has become viral. How can you even think of ‘3 Idiots’ sequel without Virus (played by Boman). It’s good that Kareena called and informed me. I would never have known. This is not fair, cooking up something this big and not even informing us. Is this your decency? Where is our friendship? I thought we were friends.” He ended the video by adding that he was calling actor Jaaved Jafferi.

After Kareena and Boman, Jaaved also shared a clip on his Instagram and expressed his disappointment.

He said, “Have you watched the latest news? 3 Idiots Part 2 is in making without the original Rancho. I mean seriously? I was the original Rancho, he was Chote.” He ended up asking actor Mona Singh if she knew something about this or not.

Helmed by Rajkumar Hirani ‘3 Idiots’ was released in the year 2009 and received a massive response from fans and critics.

“All is well,” a fan commented.

Police Detain Karnataka Cong Chief, Others Over Rahul's Row

Police Detain Karnataka Cong Chief, Others Over Rahul’s Row

Karnataka police detained Congress state president DK Shivakumar and other party leaders and workers who were protesting against the Surat Court verdict against Rahul Gandhi.

“Their (BJP) party will collapse in Karnataka. It is on the verge of collapse. They are just trying to blackmail all leaders & contractors. We’re with people and people are with us. Their voice is our voice. We want to see Karnataka regain its glory,” Shivakumar told mediapersons.
Earlier today, Congress leaders protested against the conviction of Rahul Gandhi by the Surat District court in a criminal defamation case. The Wayanad MP was sentenced to two years in jail but was later granted bail by the court and his sentence suspended for 30 days to let him appeal the decision.

The Congress party planned a massive agitation including a protest at the Vijay Chowk in the national capital.

The party said it also plans to meet President Droupadi Murmu with other parties over the issue.

Congress is also expected to raise the issue in Parliament during the ongoing second leg of the Budget Session.

“They (BJP) are doing this to sidestep the main issue. Congress has always stood by OBC, SC, ST, Backward class and minorities and fought for them,” Kharge said on the conviction of Rahul Gandhi.

The Surat District Court pronounced the verdict in the case for his alleged “how come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?” remarks on a complaint lodged by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi.

Gandhi had made the alleged remarks about Modi’s surname at a rally in Karnataka’s Kolar, ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Meanwhile, according to legal experts, as a consequence of the Surat District Court’s verdict, Rahul Gandhi can be disqualified as MP. The Supreme Court in a 2013 verdict had said that any MP or MLA stands disqualified from the time of his conviction if a sentence of two or more years is pronounced.

Reacting to the District Court’s verdict, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh in a tweet on Thursday said that Rahul Gandhi was being punished for speaking the truth and raising his voice against the dictator. Ramesh had also added that the law of the country gives Rahul Gandhi an opportunity to appeal so he will exercise this right and that they’re not afraid.

On Thursday, the Rajasthan Congress in support of Rahul Gandhi and against the misuse of central agencies protested outside the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) headquarters and raised slogans against the Modi government.

“An appeal will be made in the High Court. Congress workers from all over the country are standing in support of Rahul Gandhi and his ideology”, Dotasara had told ANI.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Thursday in a tweet said that his religion was based on truth and non-violence after he was found guilty in the criminal defamation case filed against him over his alleged ‘Modi surname’ remark. (ANI)
