Medical Seats Doubled In Last Few Years: Modi

Medical Seats Doubled In Last Few Years: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said over 260 new medical colleges have been opened in the past few years, which doubled up the number of seats in graduate and postgraduate medical courses.

He made the remarks addressing a post-Budget webinar on the subject of ‘Health and Medical Research’.

This was the ninth of the series of 12 webinars being organised by the government. The objective behind hosting the webinars is to seek ideas and suggestions for the effective implementation of the initiatives announced in the Union Budget 2023.

During the webinar, PM Modi underlined the emphasis on the nursing field in this year’s Budget.

“Opening 157 nursing colleges in the vicinity of the medical colleges is a huge step in the direction of medical human resources. This may be useful in fulfilling global demand, not just the domestic need,” he added.

On India’s pharma sector during the Covid-19 pandemic, he said the trust it has gained the world over was unprecedented.

“The way India’s pharma sector has gained trust the world over during the Covid-19 pandemic was unprecedented. We have to capitalize on this”, the Prime Minister said.

Notably, India not only catered to its own population with life-saving vaccines but also supplied vaccines worldwide. Under Vaccine Maitri, India supplied vaccines to 100 countries and provided drugs to around 150 countries during the pandemic.

PM Modi also put a thrust on how his government is focused on using more technology in the health sector.

“We wish to provide timely healthcare to all citizens through digital health ID system. 10 crore teleconsultations have been made through government’s eSanjeevani telemedicine service,” PM Modi said.

Further, PM Modi also said one of the main focuses of the government is that people should get testing facilities and better primary health care near their homes.

“Critical health infrastructures are being set up in small cities and townships under PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission. Not only small cities are getting hospitals, ecosystem related to the health sector has also been developed,” he added. (ANI)

This Holi, Chinese Merchandise Loses Market Share

This Holi, Chinese Merchandise Loses Market Share

With the festival of colours just around the corner, markets, like every year, are flooded with Holi colours, sprayers and other decoratives- this time with a touch of Atmanibhar Bharat.

As customers go shopping this Holi, they are increasingly rejecting Chinese products and preferring local Made in India products.

ANI visited Delhi’s famous Sadar Bazar and found most of the traders are offering Made in India colours, pichkaris, and gulals, among other items.

“At large, the public’s responses are more towards Indian products. Consumers are more into buying local products and Chinese products are no more attractive among buyers,” said Javed, a Sadar Bazar vendor who is selling such items.

He also named a few local manufacturers who are into Holi products and are in high demand.

“Make in India initiative is moving ahead. People come to our shops and ask us to show only local products,” Javed added.

In the past, Chinese products largely were the only options for consumers, which has drastically changed for the better with several local makers making inroads in this segment.

“I demanded Indian products…Chinese products have declined and Indian products are replacing them,” said a customer Ravi.

Another customer Rajiv, who visited Sadar Bazar to purchase Holi products for his children, said, localised manufacturing is giving jobs to people.

“I came to purchase ‘pichkari’ for my children and I felt nice that all items that are on display in the markets are India-made. Chinese products are nowhere to be seen,” Rajiv added.

Quality in Chinese products seemed to be a major concern among consumers and traders.

“Quality of Indian products are better, and Chinese products are typically for single use,” Rajiv further said.

Rohini Gupta, a Ghaziabad resident, who came down to Sadar Bazar to buy Holi colours echoed the same concern and told ANI that whatever she bought were only Indian products.

Notably, demand for Holi products too fully recovered after the pandemic-led low-key celebration.

“Demand for pichkaris has been high. We are only selling Indian products. Demnand for Chinese products in Indian markets declined due to rising complaints from retailers as they cannot be returned in case of defects,” said Mohamad Babar, another vendor. (ANI)

‘Chinese Must Go’: Kenyan Traders Protest Against Beijing

‘Chinese Must Go’: Kenyan Traders Protest Against Beijing

Kenyan traders are staging protests against Chinese businesses in the country, raising slogans that “Chinese must go!”

The demonstration comes in the wake of controversy elicited by the coming of China Square retail outlet of general merchandise whose prices are on average 45 per cent lower than those prevailing in locally owned enterprises, reported Africa.com.
Dressed in dust coats used in their retail outlets, over 1000 traders early this month marched to the office of the deputy president and to parliament to submit a petition against the Chinese retailers.

“The Chinese cannot be importers, retailers, wholesalers, and hawkers,” read one placard held aloft during the protest. Some chanted “Chinese must go!” reported Africa.com.

Kenyan traders from downtown centres have said that the Chinese traders have driven them out of business and claimed that they were selling goods at affordable low rates.

Speaking to The Standard, Peris, an electronics dealer at Nyamakima said, “I’m here to protest against the Chinese traders’ invasion of the Kenyan market. The foreigners are playing the manufacturer and seller’s role at the same time, which shouldn’t be the case. In Kenya, they are the distributors and retailers. They’ve locked us out of business.”

Trade Minister Moses Kuria has offered to take over China Square’s lease from its Chinese owner and hand it to local traders, but Korir Sing’oei, the principal secretary at Kenya’s ministry of foreign affairs, stressed on Twitter that all investors are welcome, irrespective of their nationality.

Wu Peng, the top African official at China’s ministry of foreign affairs welcomed Sing’oei’s assurance on Twitter. (ANI)

Suicide Bomber Kills 9 Security Personnel In Pakistan’s Bolan

Suicide Bomber Kills 9 Security Personnel In Pakistan’s Bolan

At least nine personnel of the Balochistan Constabulary were killed, while nine others sustained injuries in a suicide bomb attack in Bolan, reported Geo News.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Kachhi, Mehmood Notezai, said that the preliminary evidence suggests it was a suicide attack, however, the exact nature of the blast could be ascertained after the investigations.

He said that a bomb disposal team reached the site of the incident and the area is being searched after the explosion.

According to the police, the blast occurred near the Kambri bridge area of Bolan and the injured are being shifted to Divisional Headquarters Hospital, reported Geo News.

Pakistan is facing violence from Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), an offshoot of the Afghan Taliban movement that is ideologically aligned with the Afghan branch but draws its leaders from within Pakistan.

The TTP has claimed responsibility for many attacks in the latest spate of terrorism in Pakistan; a TTP splinter group said it had carried out the January 30 mosque attack in Peshawar that killed 101 worshippers, most of them policemen, reported Foreign Policy.

More than 8,000 members of Pakistan’s security forces have lost their lives in terrorist incidents since 2000. In 2014, the TTP attacked Peshawar’s Army Public School, killing 141 people, including 132 children of military officers and soldiers.

The January 30 attack targeted policemen. Both attacks appeared intended to demoralize the Pakistani military and law enforcement and to dissuade Pakistan’s leaders from going to battle with the TTP.

Periodic negotiations between the Pakistani government and terrorist groups in recent years have only convinced the terrorists that the authorities lack the resolve for a sustained fight.

Several peace deals and cease-fire agreements between Islamabad and the TTP have broken down. Last November, the TTP terminated the latest cease-fire, negotiated last June, and threatened new attacks across Pakistan in retaliation for the security service’s actions. (ANI)

Kejriwal, Bhagwant Reach Raipur To Campaign For Assembly Elections

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Sunday reached Raipur to campaign for Chhattisgarh assembly elections, 2023.

While talking to ANI, Kejriwal said, “The upcoming elections are very important for the people of Chhattisgarh. BJP ruled Chhattisgarh for 15 years and Congress ruled for about seven years.”
He added, “There is no significant difference in the governance of both the parties. Only the names of the parties and the names of the chief minister have changed. The life of the people did not change, the system did not change, and the system remained the same.”

Mann said, “Punjab has suffered exactly the same. For 25 years since 1997, there was the rule of two families. The Badal family and Captain created a mafia that looted Punjab fiercely, Sand mafia, land mafia, whatever.”

Assembly elections are due in 2023 in Chhattisgarh. (ANI)
