Raid against Atiq Ahmed

BJP, Cong Engage In War Of Words Over ED’s Action In C’garh

Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) fresh action in Chhattisgarh has stroke a ‘war of words’ in the political arena here as Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel called the raids a politically motivated move.

At the same time, the BJP rejected the allegations and questioned the role of those arrested by the central agency in the politics of Congress.
“BJP questioned two officials (who were arrested by ED) against whom the central agency conducted a probe under the most stringent law in the country. As nothing was found against them, the case has been given to the state for undertaking the probe,” said CM Baghel, questioning that if they (ED) would have found anything concrete, the question of forwarding the case to the state would not arise.

Baghel stated this while talking to the media at Swami Vivekananda Airport in Raipur on Monday.

Following the letter received from the ED Director, the state government has launched a probe but what about the letters we have sent to the agency requesting to probe the chit fund and NAN (civil supplies corporation) scam, said Baghel.

When would the ED, which is probing the NAN scam, reveal who is CM sir and CM madam and when they will conduct a probe against people indulged in chit fund scam, questioned the Chhattisgarh CM.

“Congress and Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel are repeatedly levelling allegations on ED that their actions are political. I wanted to ask them businessman Suryakant Tiwari, officer Saumya Chaurasia and IAS Sameer Vishnoi, who were arrested by ED in connection with an alleged coal levy scam, were holding which post in Congress,” said IAS-turned-politician OP Choudhary, who is a BJP spokesperson.

He said what relations these people have with the politics of Congress and if they don’t have any connection with the ruling party then why is CM Baghel not taking action against them?

The name of the officer was also not removed from the government website, Choudhary alleged.

It may be recalled here that earlier, in the case, ED had arrested IAS Sameer Vishnoi, businessman Sunil Agarwal and Suryakant’s uncle Laxmikant Tiwari on October 13. ED arrested Suryakant Tiwari on October 30 and on December 2 the federal agency arrested Saumya Chaurasia. On December 9, ED filed a prosecution complaint against Suryakant Tiwari, IAS Sameer Vishnoi, Laxmikant Tiwari, Sunil Agarwal, and others before the PMLA Special Court, Raipur.

The money laundering investigation was launched after the ED took cognizance of an Income Tax department complaint. The financial crimes probe agency in October carried out multi-city raids in the state as part of its probe.

The ED on March 29 had carried out searches against Congress leader and Raipur Mayor Aijaz Dhebar, his brother Anwar Dhebar, liquor businessman Baldev Singh Bhatia alias Pappu Bhatia and others. (ANI)

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav

This Fight Is Against Mitrakaal: Rahul After Getting Bail

Following the appeal of his conviction in Surat court in the 2019 defamation case, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday said that he was fighting against the “Mitrakaal” and in his fight to save democracy, the truth was his weapon and support.

“This is a fight against ‘mitrakaal’ and to save democracy. In this struggle, truth is my weapon and support,” said Gandhi in a Hindi tweet.
He has been criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi for “saving his friend Adani” over the Hindenburg report.

Disqualified Congress MP Rahul Gandhi today was granted bail in a 2019 defamation case by a Surat court, till April 13, when the case will be heard again.

Rahul Gandhi’s lawyer Gaurav Pandya while talking to the media said that Rahul Gandhi’s appeal against the said conviction would be heard by the court on May 3.

Rahul appeared in the court today and filed an appeal against his March 23 conviction.

Rahul Gandhi reached Surat where he filed an appeal seeking a stay on his conviction by a Surat magistrate court for the defamation case over his remark on the ‘Modi surname’.

The court had earlier given time of 30 days to the Congress leader to appeal its order.

After the Surat court’s verdict, Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as MP from Lok Sabha.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and senior leaders including chief ministers of Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh reached Surat from their respective states had accompanied Gandhi to the Gujarat court. Priyanka was seen with Rahul Gandhi aboard an IndiGo flight from Delhi.

The former MP from Wayanad was convicted and sentenced to two years in hail by the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate H H Varma on March 23 in a defamation case over his ‘Modi surname’ remark in 2019 in Karnataka.

The defamation case was filed against Gandhi by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi for saying “How come all thieves have the common surname Modi?”

The Bharatiya Janata Party came down heavily on Rahul Gandhi for accompanying his family and party leaders to file an appeal in the appellate court in Surat against his conviction by a magistrate court in the 2019 criminal defamation case.

BJP spokesperson held a press conference earlier today to lash out at Rahul Gandhi and alleged that the Congress leader is going with his family and some chief ministers “with pomp and show” to “repeat and add to the insult” of the OBC community.

“Rahul Gandhi, his family members, CMs Ashok Gehlot & Bhupesh Baghel are going to Surat & will be creating mayhem in the name of appealing (against the two-year sentence) verdict. What’s the need for this ruckus?” Patra said.

“Rahul Gandhi, is it not true that you used a casteist remark against the OBC community? You called them a thief and abused them. You are going to Surat with your family and some chief ministers with pomp and show. Do you want to pressurise the judiciary? Appealing is a democratic right. You are going to augment the insult that you have thrown at the OBC community by going and staging this kind of protest in Surat. Are you trying to pressurise the Indian judiciary through these gimmicks of yours?” Patra said.

Further slamming Rahul Gandhi over his “arrogance”, the BJP leader alleged that he was not ready to apologise to the lower court for his remark. (ANI)

'Rajya Sabha Day'

Engage In Meaningful Debates For Progress Of Nation: RS Chairman To MPs

On the occassion of ‘Rajya Sabha Day’, Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday appealed all MPs to engage in informed and meaningful debates and deliberation for the progress of the nation.

Reminding on this day in 1952 the Rajya Sabha was constituted, Dhankhar noted the importance of the Council of States and asserted that “the House should be a platform for debate, dialogue, deliberations and discussions, and called for its rightful role in Amrit Kaal.”
“On this significant occasion, I appeal to members of the Upper House to resolve to protect the dignity of the Rajya Sabha, and engage in informed, meaningful debates and deliberations for the greater progress of the nation in Amrit Kaal,” Dhankhar appealed.

The Rajya Sabha Chairman’s message to all MPs came as the House has been facing adjournments everyday since the second leg of the Budget session started on March 13.

Dhankhar said that the ‘Council of States’ as defined in our Constitution plays a critical role in our polity.

Upholding the federal principle of our democracy, the Chairman said, the Rajya Sabha contributes towards welfare of the people by voicing their concerns and acting as a platform for erudite discussions.

“The terms ‘Upper House’ or ‘House of Elders’ though not part of official glossary, amply reflect uniquely significant importance of this institution.

“Nation justifiably expects us to lead by example in setting, sublime Parliamentary traditions worth emulating by all others. The House should be a platform for debate, dialogue, deliberations, and discussions, and not a theatre of disruptions and disturbances,” Dhankhar added. (ANI)

Surat Court Rahul Gandhi

Surat Court Extends Rahul’s Bail Till April 13

The hearing in the case challenging Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in the 2019 defamation case will next be held on May 3 at the Surat District and Sessions Court, which on Monday extended his bail till April 13.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today reached Surat where he filed an appeal seeking a stay on his conviction by a Surat magistrate court for the defamation case over his remark on the ‘Modi surname’.

You are going to augment the insult that you have thrown to the OBC community by going and staging this kind of protest in Surat. Are you trying to pressurise the Indian judiciary through these gimmicks of yours?” Patra said.

Further slamming Rahul Gandhi over his “arrogance”, the BJP leader alleged that he was not ready to apologise to the lower court for his remark.

“The lower court had given him (Rahul Gandhi) the opportunity to apologise, but he denied stating that he is Rahul and will not apologise. Rahul and responsibility never go together. Why is this arrogance? The Supreme Court had pulled him up for his remarks over Narendra Modi. He wasn’t ready to apologise in Supreme Court, but the court made him apologise in written in the form of affidavit,” Patra said.

Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju alleged that the Congress party is doing drama to “threaten the judiciary”. “They (Congress) are doing a drama to threaten the judiciary. I condemn it. If a court has convicted somebody, then the drama is basically about pressuring. Congress party considers a family above the country…” told reporters outside Parliament today.

Rijiju also posted a tweet saying, “Rahul Gandhi might be going to Surat to file an appeal. It is not required of a convict to go personally to file an appeal. Generally, no convict goes personally. His going personally with a motley group of leaders and aides accompanying him is only a drama.”

The Union Minister said, “What Rahul Gandhi is doing is also a childish attempt to bring pressure on the appellate court. All courts in the country are immune from such tactics.”

Union Minister Anurag Thakur also hit out at the Congress. “India won’t tolerate the insult of backwards…Earlier, PV Narasimha Rao, P Chidambaram, DK Shivakumar went to jail too, how many Congress people went with them? Is one family bigger than the country?,” Thakur asked.

However, the Congress leaders said that they are accompanying Rahul Gandhi to show solidarity with him.

Chhattisgarh chief minister and Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel questioned the BJP’s logic. “I am going with my leader (Rahul Gandhi), how can this be pressure on the judiciary? They (BJP) are creating a ruckus in West Bengal and Bihar. Till now no appeal has come from PM Modi and Amit Shah…,” Baghel told reporters.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said, “We will not debate the court’s decision but will fight against injustice. It is not a show of strength. He is our leader. Everyone goes to stand by a leader. The family members go along when there is even a normal case. This is a party and we are fighting for the country. We will reach there. It is the decision of the whole party, he has not called us.”

Himachal chief minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, who is also accompanying Rahul rubbished the allegation of “drama” levelled by the BJP.

“No one can pressurise judiciary. We are going to Surat. Congress is the main opposition party and Rahul Gandhi is big leader of our party. This is not a political drama. We stand by him…,” Sukhu said.

Meanwhile, there was heavy security deployed in Surat where Congress party workers gathered outside District and Sessions Court in support of their party leader. “Given the presence of Rahul Gandhi in Surat district court the Surat city police have deployed the police force wherever there is a possibility of movement. We will also be starting frisking and checking,” Sagar Bagmar, DCP Zone-4 Surat told ANI. (ANI)

China Plays Peace Dragon In West Asia, What Next?

With the double whammy scored in a matter of a month by brokering a rapprochement between Iran and Saudi Arabia and by boosting an isolated Vladimir Putin by meeting in Moscow, China has attained the global centre stage. The twin diplomatic feats pose a direct challenge to the United States-led West that has long determined war and peace in West Asia and is out to defeat Vladimir Putin’s Russia in Ukraine.

There is a message for India. It has, for now at least, missed the bus in both regions. It has centuries-long cultural and commercial ties with the West Asian region. Millions of Indians work there. But relations with individual nations in the region have not added up to an image and presence in West Asia. The newbie China has done it.

Walking the diplomatic tightrope of the Ukraine conflict and refusing to condemn Putin’s actions, India has hoped to play the mediator at some stage. Prime Minister Modi’s acolytes would have you believe this. President Xi Jinping’s set of peace proposals to end the conflict in Ukraine, coming from a partisan, are unlikely to be accepted by the West. But they pre-empt any Indian initiative for now.

Indeed, for the Western nations boosting Ukraine’s resistance, such a Chinese move would amount to a strategic sacrilege. China is the reason why Russia, besides its own enormous strength, is able to rough it out in Ukraine where it did not anticipate being bogged down. But it shows no sign of suing for peace either.

Xi’s Moscow visit signals that Beijing is firmly behind Moscow, and that, having invested heavily in diplomatic and economic terms, with likely future gains for itself, it will not allow Russia to lose. If that prolongs the conflict, and destruction of Ukraine, so be it. It’s all taking place as US ties with China, which began to fray with former President Donald Trump’s trade war, keep worsening under Joe Biden. As Bloomberg reported, after talking to many Biden administration officials, the US ‘fears’ that a war-weary world may embrace China’s Ukraine peace bid.

Saying all this, however, is different from an overwhelming number of Western analysts, and most Indian analysts who take their cue from them. They all warned Modi against the ‘folly’ of tacitly supporting Russia. Concessional Russian oil has helped ‘grease’ the Indian line of reasoning, though. Russia is now India’s largest oil supplier and in 2022, the bilateral trade between the two countries touched a record high of $31 billion.

Western interests are unwavering against China, and Russia — Ukraine or no Ukraine — is secondary. For India, too, closer to the Western camp than ever before, while China is the principal threat, Russia, a traditional friend, can be chided and warned from time to time since India must remain and appear ‘balanced’ in the eyes of the Western allies.

Xi’s Moscow sojourn confirms China as Russia’s major partner. To that extent, this reduces India’s diplomatic space in Moscow, and that could push India further into the US-led camp. Already, India and China’s relations are strained over the military deployments at the Line of Actual Control (LAC), which has also turned violent at times. China has openly expressed displeasure about India’s proximity to the United States and also criticizes any developments related to the Indo-Pacific.

ALSO READ: Saudi-Iran Agreement – A Victory For China

Watch the power play in the Indo-Pacific. Xi’s trip to Russia was preceded by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s to Ukraine. And Kishida, before going there, conferred with Modi. And Modi had by then met Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

But while Ukraine, the current distraction shows all signs of lengthening, the real tussle is in the Indo-Pacific. The US and Europe would like to have their domination, while China is striving for a favourable balance. Thus, major power polarization has become the order of the day. This is a warning sign for all nations, including India, of the shape of things to come.

Taking together Xi’s visit to Moscow and his new foreign minister Qin Gang’s hosting of Saudi Arabia and Iran, the message is more for the US and Europe than anyone else. It signals the loss of credibility if not of strength.

Europe’s economies, already slowing, have been hurt by the Ukraine conflict. They were not ready for the Russian energy embargo in retaliation to their economic sanctions. Following President Joe Biden’s entry into Ukraine, they want to ‘defeat’ Putin, but cannot spell how. They are unlikely to roll back the NATO expansion, the reason why Putin invaded Ukraine. And now the latter has become the sacrificial goat in this proxy war.

The US and Europe have shown consistency in pushing NATO’s frontiers that Russia finds too close to comfort. By contrast, right under their nose, China has shown quiet consistency in forging ties with West Asia, at least over the last ten years. Xi visited Saudi Arabia and had meetings with the Iranian leadership – enough to hold their hands and end their mutual distrust.

China has been a major presence in the West Asian region for several years. It is a major buyer of their energy, a major trade partner, an investment partner and a logistical partner. The new thing is that it has extended its role with regard to political issues.

As retired Indian diplomat and a veteran West Asia scholar Talmiz Ahmad points out: “Every major university in the world has Chinese scholars. Every major Chinese university has a centre for West Asian studies. They have more than 1,000 West Asian scholars in China. China now has very high stakes in the region’s stability.”

China has stepped into space vacated by the West. Iran and the US have been cross with each other for over four decades now. And the Saudi Crown Prince has for a year now been trying to reduce his dependence on the Americans. As The Financial Times says, “This is a challenge to the United States, whose traditionally strong relations with Riyadh have cooled.” In a sense, West Asia has come of age.

To put the two complex developments in simple terms, it is China’s ‘soft’ power at work – achieving success without the use of force – against the use of force by the US-led alliance.

Military Trials Of Civilians

Pak’s Inflation Soars To 35.4% In March, Highest Since 1965

The Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based inflation raced to 35.4 per cent in March, the highest annual rise in prices on record since 1965, driven mainly by skyrocketing costs of food, electricity, beverage, and transport, according to official data, reported Pak-based publication Business Recorder.

Pakistan’s year-on-year inflation hit 35.37 per cent in March — the highest in nearly five decades — as the government scrambled to meet International Monetary Fund (IMF) conditions to unlock a desperately needed bailout.
The March inflation number was the highest annual rate since available data, i.e. July 1965, according to the research firm Arif Habib Ltd, and is expected to rise in the coming months, reported Dawn.

A spokesperson for the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics confirmed that “this is the highest ever inflation recorded in the data we have.”

Monthly inflation — measured by a basket of products and services called the CPI — stayed above 20 per cent for eight months from June to January. It then hit 31.6 per cent in February and has now crossed 35 per cent. The reading was 12.7 per cent in March last year, reported Business Recorder.

On a month-on-month basis, it increased to 3.7 per cent in March 2023 as compared to an increase of 4.3 per cent in the previous month and an increase of 0.8 per cent in March 2022.

CPI inflation Urban increased to 33 per cent on year-on-year basis in March 2023 as compared to an increase of 28.8 per cent in the previous month and 11.9 per cent in March 2022.

CPI inflation in Rural, increased to 38.9 per cent on year-on-year basis in March 2023 as compared to an increase of 35.6 per cent in the previous month and 13.9 per cent in March 2022, reported Business Recorder.

Poor citizens are already feeling the brunt of such high inflation, which has become unrelenting on the back of a messy cocktail of factors like political instability, years of financial mismanagement, the rupee’s depreciation, and as the government scrambled to meet IMF conditions to unlock a desperately needed bailout.

The goods and services in the CPI basket are divided into 12 major components with different weights. Of them, costs in three categories — food and non-alcoholic beverages, transport, and recreation and culture — jumped by around half when compared to March last year, reported Dawn.

The index for the “alcoholic beverages and tobacco” category saw the highest annual jump, at 140 per cent, though its weight in the CPI is 1per cent compared to food’s 35 per cent.

In the food group, the items whose prices increased the most in March compared to last year were onions (257.6 per cent), tea (105.19 per cent), wheat (94 per cent), eggs (83.6 per cent), rice (82.4 per cent), wheat flour (70 per cent), gram whole (65 per cent), pulse moong (58.3 per cent), besan (56 per cent), wheat products (54 per cent), pulse gram (53.8 per cent), pulse mash (53.5 per cent), cooking oil (53.5 per cent), fresh fruits (51.3 per cent), dry fruits (48 per cent), etc.

In the non-food category, the items whose prices saw the highest increase were textbooks (74 per cent), motor fuel (71.6 per cent), stationery (67 per cent), gas charges (62.8 per cent), motor vehicles (45.5 per cent), household equipment (42 per cent), and others, reported Dawn.

The country needs billions of dollars of financing to service existing debt, while foreign exchange reserves have dwindled and the rupee is in freefall. Poor Pakistanis are feeling the brunt of the economic turmoil, and at least 20 people have been killed since the start of the Muslim fasting month of Ramzan in crowd crushes at food distribution centres.

“The way inflation is rising, I believe a famine-like situation has been simmering,” said Shahida Wizarat, a Karachi-based analyst. At least 12 people were killed Friday in a crowd crush in Pakistan’s southern city of Karachi at a factory distributing RamZan alms.

The South Asian nation — home to more than 220 million — is deep in debt and must enact tough tax reforms and push up utility prices if it hopes to unlock another tranche of a USD 6.5 billion IMF bailout and avoid defaulting.

Inflation is expected to stay at “elevated” levels, the finance ministry said, “owing to market frictions caused by relative demand and supply gap of essential items, exchange rate depreciation and recent upward adjustment of administered prices of petrol and diesel.” (ANI)

NYPD Secret Service Plan

NYPD, Secret Service Plan To Close Key Streets For Trump’s Arraignment

New York City officials plan to close key streets in lower Manhattan as a security measure if former US President Donald Trump is indicted when he appears in a court here on Tuesday, reported ABS News.

The US Secret Service is coordinating security plans with the New York Police Department in the event that former President Trump is indicted and arraigned in an open courtroom in Manhattan, according to sources.
Both agencies discussed logistics, including court security and how Trump would potentially surrender for booking and processing, according to sources briefed on the discussions, reported ABC News.

Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine said on Twitter on Thursday that “NYPD and other law enforcement agencies have been planning and coordinating intensively for this moment. New York City is ready. If there is a Trump mob, they have lost the element of surprise.”

Earlier Monday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said he was “confident” the city is prepared for any protests related to a potential indictment of the former president.

“We are monitoring comments on social media, and the NYPD is doing their normal role of making sure there is no inappropriate actions in the city,” Adams said Monday at an unrelated press conference. “We are confident we’re going to be able to do that.”

Trump is expected to appear in court on Tuesday afternoon, the first former US president to be indicted. A grand jury convened by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who had been investigating Trump’s role in hush money payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign, determined on Thursday that there was enough evidence to bring criminal charges against him.

Trump, who is running for the Republican nomination for next year’s presidential race, has denied any wrongdoing and called the probe and the indictment a partisan attack. Bragg is a Democrat.

A team of Secret Service agents accompanied by New York Police Department officials toured the courthouse and its entrances on Friday, apparently mapping the former president’s transit through the building.

Writing on his Truth Social platform Saturday, Trump called for protests against what he said was his expected arrest Tuesday, reported ABC News.

Online posts indicate there appear to be a handful of small protests being organized by different grassroots groups. On Sunday a small group of pro-Trump demonstrators gathered on the bridge connecting Palm Beach to the mainland. They said they would return with more people on Tuesday or sooner if Trump were to be indicted, according to reports.

An intelligence bulletin issued Sunday by the Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency in Washington, D.C., and obtained by ABC News, says that some extremists consider the possible indictment of Trump a “line in the sand.”

“Potential criminal justice actions taken toward a former US president — or actions perceived to be taken toward the former president — remain a ‘line in the sand’ for Domestic Violent Extremists (DVE) communities and thus have the potential to manifest in violence toward government targets or political officials,” said the bulletin from the DC Fusion Center, a threat intelligence group within the agency.

The FBI is warning local and state police agencies around the country about concerns related to a possible indictment of Trump, but the bureau says it doesn’t have any additional information.

“The FBI continues to closely monitor a potential Indictment of the former President which open-source reporting has indicated may occur in the coming week,” the FBI said in a warning obtained by ABC News.

The US Capitol Police also issued their own assessment regarding potential violence, saying that they have seen “no current indication of threats directed at the US Capitol or Members of Congress” as it relates to Trump. (ANI)
