Prabhu Deva Birthday Special

Birthday Special: Prabhu Deva And His Inimitable Dance Moves

He dons many hats: actor, director, choreographer. But dance is in his blood. If you want to define him by any one word, it’s dance! Prabhu Deva is synonymous with impeccable and inimitable moves which inspire generation after generation. Often called a home-grown Michael Jackson, Prabhu Deva’s inspiration has always been the legendary dancer.

The choreographer-turned-director started his career at 15 assisting his dance director father Mugur Sundar. It was his father, who encouraged him to pursue his dreams even when he flunked an examination. Apart from his father, Prabhu Deva looks up to south superstar Chiranjeevi in high regard as he motivated him when Prabhu himself lacked confidence. As the actor-dancer turns 50 years on Monday, let’s wish him a rocking birthday with some of his iconic Hindi numbers…
Urvashi Urvashi

Prabhu Deva’s moves from this song from the film ‘Kaadhalan’, which was dubbed in Hindi as ‘Hum Se Hai Muqabala’, remain one of his iconic tracks. His killer dance moves on the top of a bus still inspire awe across age groups.

Muqabala Muqabala

This AR Rahman track is from the movie ‘Kaadhalan’. Rahman’s catchy music, coupled with Prabhu Deva’s killer moves made everyone fall in love with the actor. Even after releasing almost three decades ago, this song can still make you dance.

Que Sera Sera

Deva managed to steal the limelight in ‘Pukaar’ with his guest appearance in this song. His synchronised steps with Madhuri Dixit enthralled audiences. Madhuri and Prabhu’s moves with their perfect timing are absolute visual treats!

Go Go, Govinda

This is another entertaining song where Prabhu Deva has danced his heart out with actress Sonakshi Sinha. Both the stars connect with the audience with their easy hook steps and expressions. This track is still a hit at Janmashtami celebrations.

Main Aisa Kyon Hoon?

Lakshya’s Mein Aisa Kyu Hoon fetched Prabhu Deva his second National Film Award in the Best Choreography category. The choreographer and Hrithik Roshan, one of the greatest dancers of all time, collaborated only to bring about a gem, which became a rage among the young people.

Saree ke Fall Sa

It’s a song from Prabhu Deva’s directorial film. And the dance moves bear his signature marks. Shahid Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha did justice to the choreographer’s fun moves in this catchy number.

Happy hour

This song features in the movie ABCD 2, where Prabhu Deva’s tipsy performance with Varun Dhawan was the USP. Watching Deva perform with Dhawan, who is a great dancer himself, was a treat for all their fans.

As fans want to believe, Prabhu Deva does not grow old, as his dance moves do not go out of mind and out of sight! (ANI)

Parineeti Chopra Raghav Chadha

Raghav Accompanies Parineeti At Mumbai Airport Amid Wedding Rumours

The airport spotting of Parineeti Chopra and Raghav Chadha continues. The duo was captured by the shutterbugs at the Mumbai airport on Sunday morning.

Parineeti was dressed in all-black outfits while Raghav was seen in a beige-colored shirt and denim. Raghav smiled at the paps and requested them to clear the path ahead, showing hand gestures. They did not answer any query of the paps. However, Parineeti kept a fan’s request of getting clicked with her. Both of them left the airport in the same car. A few days back, Raghav also came to pick up Parineeti at the Delhi airport.

Though the duo remains tight-lipped about their relationship status, Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjeev Arora took to his Twitter account and congratulated Raghav and Parineeti for their rumored “union” recently.

Taking to the microblogging site, Sanjeev wrote, “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to @raghav_chadha and @ParineetiChopra. May their union be blessed with abundant love, joy, and companionship. My best wishes!!!”

Parineeti was also asked by the Mumbai paps to comment on her wedding rumors. She only blushed at their queries.

Recently, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar also teased AAP Rajya Sabha member Raghav after his pictures with the ‘Uunchai’ actor went viral on social media and said, “You occupied enough space in #socialmedia, this may be a day of silence for you.”

If reports are to be believed, Parineeti and Raghav studied together at the London School of Economics and have been friends for a long time now. Parineeti and Raghav also follow each other on Instagram.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Parineeti will be seen sharing screen space with Diljit Dosanjh in ‘Chamkila’. Helmed by Imtiaz Ali, the film revolves around two popular Punjabi singers Amarjot Kaur and Amar Singh Chamkila. While Parineeti will be essaying the role of Amarjot, Diljit will be seen as Chamkila. Amar Singh Chamkila, his wife Amarjot Kaur along with the members of their musical band were assassinated on March 8, 1988.

Raghav Chadha is a member of the Rajya Sabha from Punjab. (ANI)

Anurag Thakur

Anurag Snubs Rahul, Cannot Be Like Savarkar Even If He Takes 10 Births

Training his guns at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his remark on Veer Savarkar, Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Sunday said that the former “cannot become like Savarkar even if he takes 10 births.”

Rahul Gandhi, who was disqualified as an MP after being convicted in the criminal defamation case over the ‘Modi surname’ remark, on March 25 said, “My name is not Savarkar, my name is Gandhi. Gandhis don’t apologise to anyone”.
Speaking to ANI, at the JITO Ahimsa Run at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, here in the national capital, Anurag Thakur said that the country will never forgive Rahul Gandhi for his insult to Savarkar.

“The country will never forgive Rahul Gandhi for his insult to Savarkar. Rahul Gandhi can’t be Savarkar even if he takes 10 births. Savarkar ji spent his whole life for freedom and Rahul Gandhi spent his whole time campaigning against Indian democracy with the help of Britishers,” he said.

Earlier on March 28, after former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray cautioned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi against criticising the VD Savarkar, CM Eknath Shinde hit out at Rahul Gandhi saying that the latter should go and stay at the Andamans jail like Savarkar if he can.

“The citizens of Maharashtra are upset with what Rahul Gandhi said. Rahul Gandhi should go and stay at the Andamans jail for one day if he can,” Shinde had said while talking to reporters.

He further announced to organise Savarkar Gaurav yatra throughout the state.

“We will organise Savarkar Gaurav yatra throughout the state to inform about the sacrifice of Savarkar,” Shinde had said.

Maharashtra CM also said that insulting Savarkar means insulting the people of the country.

“Veer Savarkar’s insult by Rahul Gandhi is condemnable. He (VD Savarkar) dedicated his life to the country and Rahul Gandhi is insulting him along with criticising our country’s democracy abroad. Insulting Savarkar means insulting people of the country,” he added.

Taking a swipe at Uddhav Thackeray for diluting the Sena’s core principles by joining hands with the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Shinde said, “Those who used to say earlier they won’t tolerate the insult of Savarkar were wearing black bands in support of Rahul Gandhi. It’s unfortunate. They (Uddhav Thackeray) said they won’t tolerate Rahul Gandhi’s remarks. Will they beat them with shoes the way Balasaheb Thackeray did?”

Thackeray had also warned Rahul Gandhi to not insult Savarkar adding that demeaning him would create “cracks” in the opposition alliance.

“Savarkar suffered unimaginable torture in the Andaman cellular jail for 14 years. We can only read the sufferings. It is a form of sacrifice. We will not tolerate the insult of Savarkar,” Uddhav said.

“Veer Savarkar is our God, and any disrespect towards him will not be tolerated. We are prepared to fight, but insulting our Gods is not something we will tolerate,” he added. (ANI)

Mamata Is Sleeping…Jungleraj Has Returned: Anurag In WB, Bihar

Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Sunday hit out at the Bihar and West Bengal governments, over the communal clashes in the states during the Ram Navami festivities.

The Union Minister has spoken at the JITO Ahimsa Run at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, here in the national capital.
Attacking the Bihar government over violence, Thakur alleged that “Jungleraj” has returned in the state.

Talking to ANI, he said, “I would only say that the way the law and order situation in Bihar has worsened, and ‘Jungleraj’ has come. It is very unfortunate that the Jungleraj that was there during the Lalu regime, has returned again under Tejashwi Yadav and Nitish Kumar”.

He also said that the violence during Ram Navami festivities in West Bengal and other parts of the country is also very unfortunate.

Attacking the Mamata Banerjee government, Anurag Thakur said, “Mamata Didi is sleeping. She is providing security to one section. On the incidents of stone pelting, arson and violence during the ‘Shobha Yatra’ of the Hindu community, she kept on taking a selective stand. It is very unfortunate that Hindus are attacked under the protection of a Chief Minister, and she only plays the role of an audience”.

“What is the point of being a Chief Minister, that when you are elected, violence happens, and now again violence has taken place during the Ram Navami,” he added.

In West Bengal, two groups clashed in Howrah amid Ram Navami celebrations on March 30. Several vehicles were set on fire, and public and private properties were vandalised during the clashes.

The West Bengal police on Saturday said that a total of 38 people have been arrested, two cases have been registered and section 144 has been imposed in some areas.

In Bihar, clashes were reported on March 31, in Nalanda’s Biharsharif and Sasaram in Rohtas district where Union Home Minister Amit Shah was scheduled to visit.

Bihar Police on Sunday said the situation in Sasaram and in Biharsharif in Nalanda district is “completely normal and under control”. It said that 27 persons have been arrested in Nalanda and 18 in Sasaram in connection with the incident after identifying anti-social elements, and prohibitory orders under Section 144 are in force in Nalanda. In a major development in the Umesh Pal murder case, the Special Task Force (STF) arrested gangster Atiq Ahmed’s brother-in-law, Akhlaq from Meerut, informed police sources.

Akhlaq was arrested for allegedly harbouring shooters and helping them escape after the crime.
He is a resident of the Nauchandi area in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut.

According to police sources, after murdering Umesh Pal, the shooter and Atiq Ahmed’s son, Asad, absconded with the help of Akhlaq.

Further details are awaited in the case.

Mafia don-turned-politician, Atiq Ahmed was convicted by an MP-MLA court on March 28, and sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment in the abduction case of now-deceased Umesh Pal.

It marked the first time that Atiq Ahmed, who has over 100 cases against him over the last 43 years, has been convicted in a case.

Apart from Atiq Ahmed, the court gave life sentences to Dinesh Pasi and Khan Saulat Hanif and also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on each of the three convicts.

Seven other accused in the case, including Ashraf, brother of Atiq Ahmed, were acquitted.

Ahmed’s conviction came after Umesh Pal, an advocate and a prime witness in the 2005 murder case of BSP MLA Raju Pal, was shot dead in Prayagraj on February 24 this year.

Atiq is also the main accused in the Umesh Pal murder case. Apart from Umesh Pal, his two security personnel were also shot dead.

Atiq, the former MP and MLA, was brought by Uttar Pradesh Police from Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Jail to Prayagraj’s Naini jail on Monday after an over 24-hour-long drive. (ANI)

Explosives In Sasaram

Bihar Violence: Six Injured While Handling Explosives In Sasaram

As many as six people were injured while handling of illegal explosives at a private property while two people were arrested in Rohtas after fresh violence erupted in the state on Saturday evening, police said.

The injured people were taken to a hospital and a forensic team was rushed to the spot, officers said.
“We learned that 6 persons were injured handling illegal explosives at a private residence in Rohtas. A team of forensic experts is conducting an investigation at the spot. Two persons have been arrested,” said Rohtas Police.

Meanwhile, reacting to some media reports that people were leaving their homes in Sasaram fearing communal violence, Rohtas Police said it was a baseless rumour. He urged the citizens not to pay heed to any rumours.

“This is a totally baseless and absurd rumour. No one has left his/her locality. We appeal to the general public not to pay heed to any such rumour. The situation is peaceful and normal in Sasaram,” the Rohtas police said.

Sasaram DM Dharmendra Kumar said, “There was a bomb blast in Sasaram and the injured were referred to BHU hospital. We’re investigating the matter from all angles.”

Bihar police said information was received about a bomb blast at Sasaram in Rohtas district.

“Information was received about the incident of a bomb blast at Sasaram in Rohtas. A scooter was recovered from the scene of the blast. An FSL team is reaching the spot to investigate the matter. Prima facie, it does not appear to be a communal incident,” said an officer of Bihar Police.

A security team, comprising Special Task Force (STF) and paramilitary personnel conducted a flag march at Sasaram on Saturday.

Communal tensions in Bihar flared again on Saturday after two groups clashed in two different regions in the state, leaving three persons with bullet injuries, according to locals.

The clashes occurred in the Paharpur area in Biharsharif, and the Khasganj locality in the Sohsarai police station area, according to locals in the respective areas.

An Indicted Trump Could Still Become President of the US

An indicted Trump could still become president of the US

It is not an everyday occurrence that a former president of the USA gets indicted by a court. US presidents, both serving and former incumbents to that post, have always been protected against indictment. Till last week, when President Donald Trump was indicted by a New York grand jury on charges that hush money payments were made to an adult film star, Stormy Daniels, who claims she and Trump had sex, and that she accepted $130,000 (more than Rs 1 crore) from his former lawyer before the 2016 elections that he won and became president.

According to US law, the indictment means that now the Manhattan district attorney can move forward with criminal charges against the former president. When a suspect is indicted it means that the grand jury has found enough evidence to charge him with a crime and for the prosecutors to move to the second stage with a case against him.

In 2016, days before Trump was elected president, his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, allegedly wire-transferred the sum of money to Daniels, ostensibly for her to be silent about the alleged “affair” she had with Trump.

How will this affect Trump’s campaign for his bid to be elected as president again in 2024? More particularly, could this hurt his campaign? Or, could it hurt it?

Scandals are never good for political candidates. If scandals emerge before elections, a candidate’s performance in the elections usually is impacted negatively. In the run-up to the 2022 elections to the US Senate, it was revealed that Herschel Walker, an anti-abortionist Republican candidate, in 2009 had paid for his then-girlfriend to have an abortion. His credibility was dented and he lost a fair share of votes. Could something like that happen to Trump?

Quick opinion polls (conducted before Trump’s actual indictment) have suggested that an indictment could negatively affect his chances of becoming president again. Polls such as those (and there will certainly be many more of them now that he has been indicted) have a downside. Many people who say they would not vote for him probably wouldn’t have done so even if hadn’t been indicted or charged. So it isn’t wise to put too much stock on such opinion polls.

The thing is, however, that Trump continues to be quite popular among Republican voters. According to Civiqs, an online polling and data analytics company, as on March 31, after the indictment, nearly 75% of voters had a favourable opinion of him. Another company, Morning Consult, tracks the Republican primaries, in which party members vote in a state election for the candidate they want to represent them in the general election. After the primaries and caucuses, each major party, Democrat and Republican, holds a national convention to select a Presidential nominee. Morning Consult’s tracker shows that Trump still tops the list of candidates from the Republican party. As many as 52% of potential Republican primary voters would choose Trump. For the record, the same poll found that 26% would choose Ron DeSantis, the Florida governor who is also in the race; and just 5% would go for Nikki Haley, the Indian-origin Republican contender for the presidential candidacy.

There could be another angle to Trump’s indictment. The US political scenario is sharply partisan and divisive. Most Republican voters and supporters believe that Trump is being charged unfairly (a Reuters-Ipsospoll says more than 75% of Republicans feel he is being targeted unfairly). Remember that the indictment is not the only potential “setback” that Trump has faced. In 2019, he faced an impeachment inquiry related to the Ukraine scandal in which it was alleged that Trump coerced the president of Ukraine into announcing an investigation of Trump’s rival Joe Biden, and Biden’s son Hunter for malpractices in connection with a Ukrainian company. The inquiry was dismissed by the Senate and the issue did not seem to affect Trump’s popularity.

As of now, therefore, it does not seem that the latest indictment could have any major negative impact on Trump’s bid for another presidency of the US.

Karnataka polls will be a test for both, BJP and the Congress

Karnataka’s assembly elections will be held on May 10 and the results will be out three days later. For the two most important contenders in the state, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, the state elections will be an important test. For the BJP, which is in power there now, it will test its attempts to consolidate its sway in Karnataka and indicate whether it can spread its wings further in other southern states. For the Congress, it will test whether the party, which has been slithering down a slippery slope almost everywhere in elections throughout the country, can regain some of its past glory by defeating the BJP’s might.

In the 2018 assembly elections in Karnataka, the BJP won 104 of the 224 seats beating the Congress, which garnered 80. Since no party won a majority in the assembly, the BJP as the party with the largest number of seats was first invited to form the government. But before a trust vote to prove its majority could be held, the BJP government resigned and a Congress-led coalition government took charge. But in 14 months, some more than a dozen legislators crossed the floor and the Congress-led government collapsed. Since then, it is a BJP government that has been in power in Karnataka, albeit tenuous.

All eyes will, therefore, be on how the two main national parties fare in Karnataka this time. Expect high-decibel campaigning and pre-electoral firepower from both sides.

The “search” for Amritpal Singh continues

The manhunt for Amritpal Singh, the self-styled chief of Waris Punjab De, a pro-Khalistani group that wants a separate state for Sikhs, has become a sort of a farce. Videos and social media posts keep surfacing with statements from the 30-year-old fugitive who has been on the run since March 18.

Even as Indian security forces comb areas, conflicting reports about where he could be hiding abound. Most recently, via a YouTube post, he claimed to be in high spirits and called upon his followers to unite against the actions of the Indian government. On the live YouTube post, he also urged Sikhs in India and abroad to call a Sarbat Khalsa on the occasion of Baisakhi. A Sarbat Khalsa is a deliberative assembly (on the same lines as a Parliament in a Direct Democracy) of the Sikhs.

Many conspiracy theories, including one that suggests that the Indian authorities are deliberately going slow on apprehending Singh, are doing the rounds. Meanwhile, the young Sikh rebel continues to be at large and his supporters, especially those among Sikh immigrants in UK and the US are becoming more vocal with their protests.

Cheetahs bring cheer to India

Last year, eight Namibian cheetahs were brought into the Kuno national park in Madhya Pradesh. Last week, one of the cheetahs gave birth to four cubs. This is a boost to India’s attempts to repopulate forests with the species. Cheetahs are India’s only big carnivores to have gone extinct. Over the years, forests across India were cleared to develop settlements and set up plantations, resulting in the loss of habitat for big cats, including the cheetah.

The birth of the cheetah cubs, the first time in 70 years after the species became extinct in 1952, is good news for India’s environment and forest conservation.

Gun menace in America

After a 28-year-old shooter who identified as transgender walked into an elementary school in Nashville last week and shot dead three children and three adults, the spotlight is again on gun ownership and recurring gun-related violence in the country. The shooter in Nashville was killed by the police but the controversy over the right to own guns rages on.

The shooter used an AR-15 rifle, which is the best-selling rifle in the US. It is an army-style gun that has no known civilian use. Yet it is popular in the US with one in 20 Americans owning one.

The Washington Post newspaper asked nearly 400 AR-15 owners, who are mainly white, male, and between 40 and 65 years old,  to explain their reasons for owning the model.

Most owners said self-defense was the reason for owning an AR-15. Others said it was recreation, target shooting, and hunting, which was why they owned an AR-15.

The controversy over the right to own guns in America stems from the 2nd amendment of the US constitution, which protects the right to keep and bear arms. It was ratified on December 15, 1791, along with nine other articles of the Bill of Rights. The politics over the amendment and the spiralling rise in gun-related violence, particularly in school shootings, have been raging in the US with sharply divisive opinions about whether it should be modified. The modern debate about the amendment is about whether it protects an individual’s private right to bear arms or should be exercised through regulated organisations such as the National Guard.

The state police also advised people not to believe in rumours.
Clashes were reported on March 31 in Nalanda’s Biharsharif ane Sasaram in Rohtas district where Union Home Minister Amit Shah was scheduled to visit.

The Superintendent of Police of Nalanda, Ashok Mishra, urged locals to maintain peace and not to be swayed by rumours or misleading reports.

“The situation in Nalanda’s Biharsharif is completely normal. We would like to urge the general public not to believe in rumours. Stringent action will be taken against those spreading rumours,” stated Bihar Police in a tweet.

“The law and order situation in Biharsharif is back to normal. I appeal to people not to buy into rumours or misleading reports that may be floating around. Those found indulging in rumuour mongering will be taken to task,” the SDM added.

Nalanda DM Shashank Shubhankar echoed the refrain while reiterating that those found spreading rumours will be face stringent police action.

“Ignore the rumours. Strict action will be taken against those spreading rumours,” said Shashank Shubhankar in a tweet.

Earlier on Saturday, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said the incidents are not “natural” and somebody might have done something “unnatural deliberately” to disturb law and order.

Denying any law and order problem in the state, the chief minister also weighed in on Amit Shah’s cancellation of his scheduled visit to Sasaram following the clashes, saying that it was the BJP’s decision.

Speaking to the media, Nitish Kumar said he instructed officials to investigate the incidents and pinpoint those behind the clashes.

The CM said he suspected an external hand in the clashes stating that such incidents are not “natural” in Bihar.

“It is unfortunate. The situation was controlled in Sasaram immediately. Last evening, around 6 pm, I got to know about the Biharsharif incident. The situation has been controlled there also. But I have instructed the officials to ascertain who is at fault and investigate the matter because incidents like these never used to take place. Why have such incidents taken place this time?” Kumar said.

“The police will take action against those who are indulged. It isn’t ‘natural’, definitely, somebody might have done something ‘unnatural’ deliberately,” he added.

Bihar Police said the situation in Sasaram and in Biharsharif in Nalanda district is “completely normal and under control.”

Police said that 27 persons have been arrested in Nalanda and 18 in Sasaram in connection with the incident after identifying anti-social elements.

“The situation in Biharsharif of Nalanda and Sasaram of Rohtas is completely normal and under control. Two FIRs have been registered in Nalanda and Rohtas and 27 and 18 people have been arrested respectively identifying anti-social elements,” Bihar Police tweeted.

The police said adequate security was deployed in the districts in the wake of the clashes and the senior officials have also been camping in the violence-hit area.

“Ram Navami processions have been completed in Bihar Sharif and Sasaram. An adequate number of force has been deployed at both places. Senior officials are camping at the spot,” the Bihar police posted on its Twitter handle.

Social media is also being monitored to prevent any spread of provocative or false news. (ANI)

Navjot sidhu After Release From Jail

Democracy In Chains…: Navjot Sidhu After Release From Jail

Soon after walking out of Patiala jail, where he was lodged for nearly 10 months in connection with a road rage case, Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Saturday said that democracy is in chains and that there is a conspiracy to bring President’s Rule in Punjab.

“Democracy is in chains. There is no such thing as democracy right now. Conspiracy to bring President’s Rule in Punjab. Minorities being targeted. If you try to weaken Punjab, you will become weak,” he told reporters here.
He said that he was supposed to be released around noon but they [jail officials] delayed it as they wanted press persons to leave.

Expressing his support for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who was recently disqualified as a Lok Sabha MP, he said that the former Wayanad MP will rattle the government.

“Whenever a dictatorship came to this country a revolution has also come and this time, the name of that revolution is Rahul Gandhi. He will rattle the government,” he said.

On a question about the fugitive pro-Khalistan leader Amritpal Singh, Sidhu said that on the situation of law and order in the State he will speak at the home of slain Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala.

Sidhu was released from Patiala Jail today, after spending 10 months in jail.

Sidhu was sentenced to one-year jail by Supreme Court in a three-decade-old road rage case.

Scores of people had gathered outside Sidhu’s residence, who danced on Dhol beats and welcomed the Congress leader by showering petals on him.

The Congress leader was sentenced to one year imprisonment by the Supreme Court in May last year in the 1988 case of road rage in which he allegedly thrashed one Gurnam Singh, who later died in hospital.

Punjab Minister Brahm Shankar Jimpa said on Friday that the Punjab government has no objection to Sidhu’s release.

“The issue of the release of prisoners whose sentence has been completed is approved by the cabinet. Those who have completed their sentence will be released,” Jimpa said.

The Supreme Court allowed the review application on the issue of sentence against Sidhu.

“We have allowed review application on the issue of sentence. In addition to the fine imposed, we impose a sentence of imprisonment of one year to be undergone by respondent Sidhu,” the court said.

The order was delivered by a bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar and Sanjay Kishan Kaul.

The case has gone through Sessions Court, High Court and Supreme Court. (ANI)
