‘G20 Srinagar Meet Is A Stage-Managed, State-Managed Show, Not Reality’

Sanjay Kak, an acclaimed, independent documentary filmmaker and writer, says the Srinagar spectacle is targeted more towards domestic consumption than global audience. His words:

What is going on in Srinagar right now is a performance – mere optics. Otherwise, this seems to be a fairly pedestrian, low-level gathering of bureaucrats, tourism officials, tour-operators and a sprinkling of Delhi-based diplomats. Not surprisingly, the organisers are so far reluctant to even make public the full list of who is attending it!

To be fair, the overkill had begun well before the event. And countries that we are otherwise told are significant to India have also had to take visible, embarrassing positions – including Saudi Arabia, with which India claims a recent and special proximity, having dropped out.

It’s only because the government of India has over-invested the event with significance that the spectacle that they are presenting now seem to be going awry. Those first images emerging out of Srinagar yesterday were very telling – an endless cavalcade of cars tearing down the road from the airport to the city centre, with emptied out streets watched over by armed security men, concealed behind cosmetic screens with the G20 logo plastered across them. The security is so tight it’s as if the prime minister was visiting Srinagar!

I wonder what the delegates and the accompanying media might have thought about all this. Surely, they too pick up the newspapers and read that the Boulevard Road on which they are housed has been shut down to the public – and that includes tourists from India – for three days?

ALSO READ: ‘Kashmir Will Never Be The Same Without Pandits’

Once again, it’s the optics that is baffling. In order to suggest that Srinagar was safe for the event we were flooded with media reports of the high-powered security that had been put in place. The main venue, the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC), is by the Dal Lake, so we have been inundated with images of soldiers, armed to the teeth, racing around in high-speed boats – Marine Commandos, the CRPF. The National Security Guard was seen very visibly strutting around Lal Chowk. The army, we were told, is patrolling the hillsides that overlook the Convention Centre.

What is all of this war-like preparation meant to suggest? Normalcy in Kashmir?

The plans to take the delegates out of the secure perimeters of the SKICC and their hotel was also scuttled at the last moment. If Dachigam, which is less than 15 kms away from the SKICC, and Gulmarg, which had already been emptied out of tourists and ‘sanitised’ days before the event, are both not considered safe for the delegates, then what exactly is the government trying to project?

The real answer is that perhaps none of it is aimed at the G20 delegates or the world. It’s a performance of power for the domestic audience, and we know that a pliable Indian media will mostly not ask relevant questions. They will once again notch it up as one more triumph for the central government in Kashmir.

Let’s leave aside the question of civil rights, or, of the throttling of the media, for the moment. One of the questions that need to be asked – and I believe it was asked by some plucky journalists in Srinagar yesterday – is, why not then announce elections in Kashmir? Surely, if conditions are normal for tourists, then, so should they be for citizens, and voters!

Monsoon Session Of Parliament

Murmu, Dhankhar Likely To Release Message On Inauguration Day Of New Parliament

President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar are likely to release congratulatory messages on the occasion of the inauguration of the new Parliament building on May 28, sources said on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, who will dedicate to the nation the new Parliament building on May 28, are also likely to deliver a speech after the inauguration ceremony, sources said.

Sources earlier said that the invitation for the ceremony, both digital and physical, have been sent out to the MPs of both Houses, and the ceremony will get underway at around 11.30 am on Sunday which will be close to a two-hour affair.

“A congratulatory message by both President of India, as well as Vice President of India, will be given out on the day of the inauguration,” sources told ANI on condition of anonymity.

This comes at a time when the opposition led by Congress has raised questions over Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating the new Parliament building and accused the BJP-led central government of insulting the top constitutional post of the country by not asking President Droupadi Murmu or Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar for the inauguration.

“During the inauguration ceremony, a speech will be delivered by the Lok Sabha Speaker who is essentially the custodian of the Parliament. PM Modi is also expected to deliver a speech on the occasion. All members of Parliament will be seated in the Lok Sabha chamber of the new Parliament building, which can house more than 800 people,” sources said.

This is the same chamber which will be used for the joint Parliamentary address during the budget session and other such occasions.

Leading the attack against the Congress party, Union Minister for Urban Development (MoUD), Hardeep Singh Puri tweeted, ” Congress has a habit of raking controversies where none exist. While President is the Head of State, PM is the Head of Govt and leads the Parliament on behalf of the Govt, whose Policies are effected in form of Laws. The President is not a Member of either House, whereas PM is..”

Other opposition leaders who spoke to the same tune as the Congress party include AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi and TMC’s Sukendu Sekhar Roy.

According to sources, several opposition leaders are also considering boycotting the inaugural function on Sunday, alleging that the government has insulted the President.

In December 2020, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi did the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Parliament building, the event was boycotted by Congress.

In response to the attack by the opposition on why the Prime Minister is inaugurating the Parliament building, the ruling party BJP has countered the arguments.

Official sources in the party said that the first big construction in the Parliament complex took place post-1970. Then President of India VV Giri laid the foundation of the Parliament Annexe Building on August 3, 1970.

“But the Sansadiya Soudha building was eventually inaugurated by then prime minister Indira Gandhi on October 24, 1975. That was exactly four months after she had imposed an Emergency, curtailing fundamental rights and ordering the detention of most opposition leaders,” sources told ANI.

“That’s not all. The second big construction in the Parliament complex, too, had the prime minister of the day occupying the centre stage. On August 15, 1987, PM Rajiv Gandhi laid the foundation of the Parliament Library building. It was seven years later that Lok Sabha Speaker Shivraj Patil led the groundbreaking ceremony for the building on April 17, 1994,” they added.

Sources further said that there are portraits in the central hall and 20 of them were unveiled by presidents of India, starting with Dr Prasad and ending with Ram Nath Kovind, and two were unveiled by former prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and one each by former prime minister V P Singh and Chandra Shekhar Singh.

“Only one portrait in the central hall — of Dadabhai Naoroji — was unveiled by a Speaker. Since March 13, 1953, after Mavlankar, no Speaker has unveiled a portrait in the central hall. As per the records, Jawaharlal Nehru is the only PM to have even unveiled a portrait in the Lok Sabha chamber or inner lobby of Parliament. Dr Manmohan Singh had unveiled seven portraits in the Parliament Museum and archives during his tenure, while Atal Bihari Vajpayee unveiled two. Between P V Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh, seven busts/statues were unveiled in the waiting rooms of Parliament House,” sources said.

Sharpening its attack on former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, the BJP stated that despite that she hasn’t held any position in the government but she laid the foundation stone for the Atal tunnel on 28 June 2010 and inaugurated the Bandra – Worli Sea link in 2009.

The new Parliament building symbolises the spirit of self-reliant India (Aatmanirbhar Bharat) and will be dedicated by PM Modi to the nation on May 28.

The present building of the Parliament was completed in 1927, which is now going to be almost 100 years old. The lack of space was being experienced in this building as per the present requirements. In both Houses, there was also a lack of convenient arrangements for the sitting of the MPs which was affecting the efficiency of the work of the Members.

Considering the above, both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha passed resolutions urging the government to construct a new building for the Parliament. Consequently, on 10 December 2020, the foundation stone of the new building of Parliament was laid by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The newly constructed Parliament building has been built in record time with quality construction.

Now the newly constructed building of Parliament, which will work to further enrich India’s glorious democratic traditions and constitutional values, is also equipped with state-of-the-art facilities which will help the Members to perform their functions in a better way.

The new Parliament building will enable 888 members to sit in the Lok Sabha.

In the present building of the Parliament, there is a provision for the sitting of 543 Members in the Lok Sabha while 250 in the Rajya Sabha. Keeping in view the future requirements, arrangements have been made for a meeting of 888 members in the Lok Sabha while 384 members in the Rajya Sabha in the newly constructed building of the Parliament. The joint session of both Houses will be held in the Lok Sabha Chamber. (ANI)

Kejriwal with Mamata

Kejriwal Meets Mamata To Ensure Bill On Delhi Services Is Not Passed In RS

As part of his ongoing efforts to cobble up a grand Opposition alliance to ensure that a bill related to the centre’s ordinance nullifying the Supreme Court order on services matters is not passed in the Rajya Sabha.

Kejriwal was accompanied by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and party leaders including Raghav Chadha and Sanjay Singh.
The Delhi Chief Minister on Tuesday embarked on a nationwide tour to seek support from the Opposition parties against the ordinance brought by the Central Government on the transfers and postings of bureaucrats in the national capital.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor accused the Centre of “taking away the rights” of the people of Delhi and said that the ordinance “should not” be allowed to pass in Rajya Sabha.

Taking to Twitter, Kejriwal said, “From today, I am leaving on a tour across the country, for the rights of the people of Delhi. After many years, SC passed an order and gave rights to the people of Delhi. But, the central government took away all those rights by bringing an ordinance. The law should not be allowed to pass under any circumstances when it is brought in Rajya Sabha. I will meet presidents of all political parties and seek their support”.

He will be meeting Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray on May 24 and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo Sharad Pawar on May 25, according to AAP.

This comes after the Union Government on May 19 brought an ordinance to notify rules for the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) regarding the ‘transfer posting, vigilance and other incidental matters’.

The ordinance was brought to amend the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991 and it circumvents the Supreme Court judgement in the Centre vs Delhi case.

Meanwhile, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is also putting in efforts to rally the opposition against the Centre ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Nitish Kumar, in this regard, met Arvind Kejriwal in the national capital and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi. (ANI)

Wrestlers Justice: Rawat Leads Protest In Dehradun

Former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat on Tuesday staged a sit-in protest in Dehradun with several opposition parties and demanded justice for the female wrestlers protesting at Jantar Mantar in the national capital against Wrestling Federation of India chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

The former state’s Chief Minister protested in Dehradun’s Gandhi Park from 10 am to 12 noon today and expressed solidarity with the women wrestlers.
The senior Congress leader said that following an all-party meeting, it was decided that all the opposition parties will close in ranks against the lack of action against Bhushan and also the works of the Uttarakhand government.

“It is a good effort by the party and I congratulate the Uttarakhand Congress and all the political parties who are concerned about protecting the constitutional democracy of the country,” Rawat said.

Former State minister and Congress leader, Navprabhat said that they have contacted every party, opposing the BJP, to unite against the ruling party’s policies.

Several ace grapplers including Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshee Mallik have been protesting for over a month at the Jantar Mantar, Delhi, accusing the WFI chief of sexual harassment and demanding his arrest.

On May 19, the wrestlers marched from Jantar Mantar to Bangla Sahib Gurudwara in New Delhi on their 25th day of protest against Brij Bhushan.

Grapplers including Punia, Sakshi, Vinesh and others joined the march demanding the arrest of the WFI chief charged with sexual harassment of athletes.

The protestors have been demanding the registration of an FIR against the WFI chief and his arrest into the allegations of sexual harassment. Two separate FIRs were registered on April 28 following the Supreme Court’s notice to Delhi Police into the plea filed by the wrestlers.

Earlier on April 24, The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports announced that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) will be forming an ad-hoc committee to conduct the elections for the Executive Committee of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) within 45 days of its formation, to manage day-to-day affairs of the body, including the selection of athletes and making entries for the participation of players in international events. This committee will be functioning for an interim period till a new Executive Committee takes charge.

Delhi Police has filed a status report on the application moved by women wrestlers in an alleged offence of sexual offence levelled against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

Earlier this year, prominent wrestlers came forward to lead a protest against the WFI chief, following which the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Anurag Thakur, announced the formation of an ‘oversight committee’ to probe allegations against the WFI, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and some coaches. He further stated that it was his great pleasure to welcome Prime Minister Modi to Australia.

“My first year as Prime Minister is what I am celebrating today. I have met my friend PM six times but there is nothing better than standing on stage with him like this, it is a pleasure to welcome PM Modi here. But I must say that the warmth and energy that is here tonight is second to none,” said Albanese.

PM Modi was greeted at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney Olympic Park with Vedic chanting and other traditional types of welcome.

A cultural program was held at the Qudos Bank Arena. Various cultural performances were performed by various artists, Bharatnatyam, Garba and other dance forms were performed at the event.
