If Demands Not Met Will Do Andolan: Sachin Pilot

Issuing a stern warning to his own government led by Ashok Gehlot, Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Monday categorically stated that if his demands are not met by the “end of this month” then he will launch “andolan” (movement) to compel the state government to act.

The former Deputy CM has put forward three demands – action against corruption charges on the previous BJP government, disbandment and reconstitution of the Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) and its reconstitution, and compensation for those affected by the paper leaks – and demanded action by the end of this month.
Addressing the people on the last day of the ‘Jan Sangharsh Yatra’, Pilot said, “Today is the last day of our ‘Jan Sangharsh Yatra’ is ending. But I want to say that all the three demands of ours should be met”.

Stating that the people are his only ‘capital’, the Congress leader said that he will carry out an ‘andolan’ across the state in case his demands are not met.

“This time I did an ‘anshan’ in a ‘Gandhiwaadi’ manner. But, if our demands are not met by the end of this month, I will hold an ‘andolan’ along with the public in the entire state. We will walk through the streets, towns and villages along with the people. We will continue to raise the issues of the public and fight for their justice,” he said.

Pilot added, “We don’t have anything of our own. We just wore the shoes and started the yatra. I didn’t even had any expectations of who will come in the yatra. But, people turned up in huge numbers on such short notice. Now, the only capital that we have is the public. Along with them, we will do the ‘andolan’, we will reach every corner of the state and bring justice”.

Pilot had started his yatra on May 11 to protest against the inaction of the Rajasthan government in the alleged corruption cases during the previous Vasundhara Raje-led BJP government in the State.

Assembly polls are scheduled to be held in Rajasthan later this year and the Congress party is seeking another term ahead of the crucial Lok Sabha polls in 2024.

When asked about the unity in the Rajasthan Congress in view of upcoming State polls, Pilot said, “Neither do I hurl allegations at anyone nor do I have any rift with anyone on an individual level.”

Earlier on Sunday, he said that he has been receiving the support of the people as the issues he had raised are “essential”.

Pilot who has been vocal about the “inaction” by the Ashok Gehlot-led Rajasthan government regarding the alleged corruption during the previous BJP government in the State, said that he and the Chief Minister have to fight “unitedly” against corruption, however, alleged that Gehlot has not taken steps in this regard.

“We are getting people’s support because our issues are essential. The chief minister is the face of the state and CM Ashok Gehlot and I will have to unitedly fight against cases of corruption. But the Chief Minister has not taken any action I have been writing letters for a long time to take action against issues of corruption,” Pilot told ANI on the fourth day of his yatra.

He added, “We need to change the entire system and make it transparent as paper leak is a serious issue and needs to be resolved. Middle-class suffers the most because of corruption and the allegations we had put on the Bommai-led government have proved to be right and this is why people have voted for us in Karnataka. (ANI)

Need To Promote Innovations Useful For Defence, Civil Sectors: Rajnath

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said that institutions need to promote innovation which is not only useful for the defence industry but also for civilian purposes.

“We need to promote such innovations in the defence sector which are not only useful for defence but also equally effective for the civil sector,” Rajnath
Singh said at the 12th convocation ceremony of the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) in Pune.

He cited examples of how the use of navigation systems was initially started for defence requirements but later on became an important part of civilian life.

“Plastic surgery is also deeply related to the defence sector. We see that many a time soldiers get injured during the war, and different parts of their bodies get damaged in an unfortunate way. For this plastic surgery is a boon which is also helping civilian life,” the Defence minister said.

Rajnath Singh said countries have to move fast towards technological advancement.

“We have to keep in mind that if our adversaries have more advanced technologies, then it can become a problem for us in the coming times. That’s why we have to move fast towards technological advancement along with the changing environment,” he said.

The minister said apart from land and air, threats can come from cyberspace and the space sector.

Concepts like non-kinetic or contactless warfare have made the need for advanced technology in the defence sector more important than ever, the minister said.

“In the last few decades, we have seen that the methods of warfare are changing at a faster rate…. The dangers of conventional war are in front of us, but going beyond them, now completely new types of threats are looming in front of us,” added Rajnath Singh.

He also touched upon the government’s Atmanirbhar push and highlighted that a huge country like India cannot depend on imports.

“If we only import defence equipment and platforms, it will make us dependent on other countries in the defence sector. This dependence can also be a hindrance to our strategic autonomy,” he said.

Rajnath Singh also met former President Pratibha Patil and personally expressed condolences to her on the demise of her spouse Dr Devisingh Shekhawat. (ANI)

Tihar Jail SP Gets Notice After 2 Inmates Shifted To Jain’s Cell On Ex-Minister’s Request

The jail administration has issued a show-cause notice to the superintendent of Tihar jail no. 7 for shifting two men to the cell of former Delhi minister and Aam Aadmi Party’s jailed leader Satyendar Jain on the latter’s request.

This comes after Jain had written an application from inside the Tihar Jail, requesting the prison administration to lodge him with two more inmates in the cell.
Citing the depression and loneliness, he is suffering from, the Jain on May 11, requested the superintendent of Tihar jail no. 7 to lodge two more persons with him, an official of Tihar Jail said.

“Jain in his application said he is feeling depressed and low because of loneliness. A psychiatrist suggested him for more social interactions and he requested to lodge him with at least two more persons. He also provided two persons’ names, from the same ward no. 5,” the official said, adding that immediately his request was accepted and two persons were moved to his cell.

However, the jail administration along with the show-cause notice sent the AAP leader’s fellow inmates back to their cell.

According to the jail administration, the superintendent took this decision without informing the administration, whereas, as per the procedure, no inmate can be moved and transferred to another cell without informing the administration and taking permission.

Jain has been lodged inside Tihar Jail since June, last year.

Earlier in November, last year, a CCTV footage went viral and the AAP leader was seen having a full-body massage from inside the prison.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had initiated a money-laundering investigation on the basis of the First Information Report registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on August 24, 2017, under several sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 against Satyendar Jain, Poonam Jain, Ajit Prasad Jain, Sunil Kumar Jain, Vaibhav Jain and Ankush Jain.

The CBI filed a chargesheet on December 3, 2018, against Satyendar Kumar Jain, Poonam Jain, Ajit Prasad Jain, Sunil Kumar Jain, Vaibhav Jain and Ankush Jain.

The charge sheet mentions that Satyendar Jain while holding the office as a Minister in the Government of Delhi, during the period February 14, 2015, to May 31, 2017, had acquired assets which are disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The CBI has accused Satyendar Kumar Jain and others for the commission of offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

Jain was arrested after the ED in April this year attached immovable properties worth Rs 4.81 crore owned by companies named Akinchan Developers Pvt. Ltd, Indo Metal Impex Pvt Ltd, and others under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 in connection with the disproportionate asset and money laundering case registered Jain, his wife Poonam Jain, and others. Siddaramiah Leaves For Delhi, Decision On CM After Karnataka Win

Former Karnataka chief minister Siddaramiah left for Delhi from his residence in Bengaluru to meet top leadership as the Congress engages in the process of picking the next chief minister after the party’s emphatic win in the state.

Siddaramaiah is scheduled to leave for Delhi by 1 pm today, according to the party.
Meanwhile, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief DK Shivakumar, who is celebrating his birthday today said that he has done his duty and now it was upto the party’s high command to take a call.

“We have passed a one-line resolution. We will leave it to the party’s high command. I have not decided to go to Delhi. I have done whatever job I have to do,” Shivakumar, an eight-time told reporters after he met with Congress-appointed observers at Shangri-La Hotel in Bengaluru today.

The KPCC chief also met with party general secretary Sushil Kumar Shinde and other leaders in Bengaluru.

Bhanwar Jitendra Singh, AICC observer in Bengaluru, speaking on the decision of the State chief minister said, “We have taken the views from all the MLAs, the meeting went on till 2 am. We have prepared a report and will submit it to the Congress president.”

Along with Singh, the former Maharashtra chief minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and former General Secretary Deepak Bawaria were made the observers in Karnataka by the AICC.

Congress leader BK Hariprasad said that a secret ballot was conducted and a single-line resolution was passed on the chief ministerial post.

“They (Observers) also spoke to each MLA and took their opinion both verbally and in writing. The decision has been sent to Delhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge will take a decision after talking to Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi: Congress leader,” Hariprasad said.

The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) held on Sunday unanimously decided to leave the selection of the new Karnataka Chief Minister to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Mallikarjun Kharge.

“The Congress Legislature Party unanimously resolves that AICC President is hereby authorised to appoint the new leader of the Congress Legislature Party,” the resolution stated.

Congress leader and AICC in-charge of Karnataka, Randeep Singh Surjewala, on Sunday late night said that party chief Mallikarjun Kharge will not take long and announce the name of next chief minister of Karnataka soon.

Speaking to reporters after the late-night meeting of newly elected Congress MLAs in Bengaluru, Surjewala said, “Party leadership will take a decision. I can’t replace my judgement with Kharge Sahab’s judgement. He is our senior, and as you all know him. He is the son of the soil of Karnataka, and I’m sure he will not take very long.”

According to the Election Commission of India, Congress on Saturday won 135 seats pushing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) out of power in the only southern state it ruled and boosting its own prospects for the electoral battles ahead.

BJP managed to win 66 seats. Janata Dal-Secular (JDS) bagged 19 seats. Independents have won two seats while Kalyana Rajya Pragathi Paksha and Sarvodaya Karnataka Paksha won one seat each. (ANI)

Sitiveni Rabuka

Fiji PM Apologizes For 1987 Coup, Seeks Forgiveness

Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka on Sunday apologised to the Indo-Fijian community for the coup of 1987. Rabuka made the confession at the Reconciliation Service between the Methodist Church and the Girmitiyas in Suva held at the Vodafone Arena and has asked for forgiveness.

“I admit our wrongdoings, you have every right to blame us for the difficulties you went through, we do not blame you for being angry with us or even hate us, you are justified in your anger and your hate. I stand here to confess and to ask for your forgiveness,” tweeted Rabuka.
Rabuka admitted that he had wronged the Girmitiyas descendants and all Fijians in 1987 and said, “I am not making this confession as the Prime Minister for Fiji because I do not hold the government accountable for my actions of 1987. I do not claim to be making this confession on behalf of the Vanua Navatu, I’m not Tui Navatu, I’m just a member of the Yavusa Navatu, vanua Navatu of Cakaudrove, but I make this confession on my own behalf and on behalf of all those that took part with me on the military coup of the 14th of May, 1987. We confess our wrongdoings, we confess that we have hurt so many of our people in Fiji.”

Fiji, where ethnic Indians were in a majority until the aftermath of a military coup in 1987 forced tens of thousands of them to leave the country of 330 islands. Staged by Rabuka, it overthrew the elected government of Prime Minister Timoci Bavadra, who was the country’s first ethnic Indian prime minister.

“I make this confession on my own behalf and on behalf of all those who took part with me in the military coup on the 14th of May, 1987. We confess our wrongdoings, and we confess that we have hurt so many of our people in Fiji, particularly those of the Indo-Fijian community,” tweeted Rabuka.

Rabuka commended the efforts of those who stayed on and struggled to try and restore our relationship to date.

“I thank the community leaders who have worked tirelessly. to bring the two communities of Fijians and Indo-Fijians together. The work is not complete, we will have to continue, I do not make this as an excuse but I wish those before us had done this in the years gone by,” said Rabuka.

Rabuka admits that they have wronged Fijians, particularly the Indo-Fijian community and their sons and daughters, forcing some to leave our shores for a better living.

“I admit our wrongdoings, you are correct to have blamed us, you have every right to blame us for the difficulties you went through, we do not blame you for being angry with us or even hating us, you are justified in your anger and your hate. I stand here to confess and to ask for your forgiveness. I have made my confession personally to some for my deeds in 198 . For those that I did not reach, I hope I am coming across to you today here and on live stream. Please forgive us. As you forgive us, you release us and you are released, you are released from hatred and you are released for your anger and we can feel the peace of God coming to your beings, coming to our lives,” said Rabuka.

Rabuka’s apology comes ahead of the India-Pacific Island summit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to address the India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) summit and announce a number of initiatives aimed at deepening India’s engagement with the Pacific Islands.

He will attend the FIPIC summit in Papua New Guinea on May 21-22. The apology by Rabuka is seen as a significant step towards reconciliation between the indigenous Fijian and Indian communities.

The summit is being attended by leaders from 14 Pacific Island countries and is seen as an important opportunity for India to strengthen its ties with the region.

The 1987 coup was a pivotal moment in Fiji’s history and led to significant political instability in the country, as well as strained relations with India and other countries.

However, PM Modi’s visited Fiji within six months of assumption of office in his first term as Prime Minister. It was a bold step. It ended a freeze in high-level visits since Rabuka overthrew the islands’ democratically elected government, which provided a conducive environment for Fiji Indians to live in peace in the country.

For India, developments in Fiji, where the erstwhile anti-Indian coup leader Sitiveni Rabuka was elected PM on Christmas eve, present a stream of ironies and dilemmas. Following Rabuka’s election, replacing his Beijing-leaning predecessor, Frank Bainimarama, Fiji will be the ground zero for China-US rivalry in Oceania in the coming months.

Alarmed by the inroads China is making into Oceania, US President Joe Biden hosted the first-ever summit with 12 Pacific Island nations in Washington in September. After the summit, the Biden administration is in overdrive in that region. (ANI)

Rahul Gandhi with supporters

Karnataka Opens ‘Mohabbat Ki Dukaan’

Obviously, Bajrang Bali has been deeply offended, despite the 26-km-long road show held by a desperate PM, staring at inevitable defeat in Karnataka. Even the Jai Bajrang Bali slogans did not seem to appease the good-old Monkey God, who carries Sita and Ram inside his chest like a classical Raja Ravi Verma painting, while always celebrating Jai Siya Ram as greeting and salutation.

Besides, the muscular Jai Shri Ram slogan by Hindutva fanatics is a misnomer; in the entire Hindi heartland, it is Sita, Siya, who precedes Ram! In the same manner that in the Brajbhumi of Mathura and Vrindavan, the first greeting is always Radhey-Radhey, while Krishna plays his melodious flute in the background.

In their desperate up enthusiasm, they made the same mistake in Bengal, which worships the female Shakti, Jai Kali Kalkatte Wali, and Bolo Durga Mai ki Jai, apart from, the profound and liberating synthesis of Ramakrishna Paramhans and Vivekananda, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Lallan Fakir and Geeta Govinda; and great renaissance and reform icons like Ishwar Chand Vidyasagar, Raja Rammohan Roy and Michael Madhusudan Dutt. Jai Shri Ram was a box-office disaster in entire Bengal, even while the two Gujarati politicians, landing ritualistically on helicopters with the hyperbole of muscle and money, obsessed with their totalitarian power, totally lost the plot.

In a spoofy irony, the PM tried to reincarnate himself yet again into a white-bearded Rabindranath Tagore – which was taken with a certain sense of wry amusement by the Bengali intelligentsia and the masses, much as they love Tagore for his dislike of sectarian nationalism, and pluralist globalism. Besides, Bengal has watched with intense anxiety the destruction of the prestigious Viswabharati University at Santiniketan in Bolpur (like JNU), while a highly respected Amartya Sen has been hounded with a vicious and relentless zeal by the VC, whose sole claim to fame is that he is a BJP loyalist.

Bajrang Bali, clearly, hated being used as a cheap electoral bait, even while the 40 per cent commission slogan became viral across the landscape, including coastal Karnataka, another Hindutva lab, where, reportedly, the BJP did not do as well. The rest of Karnataka has therefore voted against the Naftrat ka Bazaar, and ushered in the Mohabbat ki Dukaan, while looking at Rajasthan where the Congress government has reduced gas cylinder prices to ₹500, and accepting the pledge of Rahul Gandhi that in the first cabinet meeting itself the five guarantees for women, the poor and ordinary folks, and the educated young will be fulfilled. No wonder, the margins have voted overwhelmingly for the Congress, defying the domination of the dominant castes.

The minister who banned Hijab in schools has lost. Not only that, a Muslim schoolgirl has topped the Board exams in Karnataka. The educated young, especially women, and the masses of Karnataka, almost always extremely decent, polite and soft-spoken, believed in Rahul Gandhi, in his quintessential white T-shirt and loose trousers, as he interacted with admiring female students and working women inside buses and bus stops in Bangalore. While the BJP did the usual, with the PM literally parking himself out there (despite Manipur burning with more than 60 dead), using the propaganda props of a polarizing Kerala Story which did not sell or jell, using Hanuman with such opportunist frenzy, falsely castigating Sonia Gandhi and branding her a secessionist — all their jaded, faded, time-tested ploys collapsed like a pack of feku cards.

Only the joker could be seen flashing his spoofy smile – because the joke is finally on Modi, and it is a dark joke, with prophecies of a dark future, enclosing the darkest narratives of infinite injustice, inhumanity and indecency witnessed by India in the ‘acche din’ since May 2014!

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi’s 22-day long march through the hinterland of the state during the fantastically successful Bharat Jodo Yatra had created an unprecedented wave of anticipation, with great admiration for the young, humble and open-ended leader, who endeared to every heart by hugging them, walking with them hand-in-hand, and, most crucially, listening to them, with intense intent, and with a certain depth of seriousness not seen among politicians in recent times. Especially, in the current scenario, where authoritarian arrogance, disregard for civilized discourse and conduct, and total disdain for constitutional and democratic propriety, has been displayed so brazenly for the world to see.

Clearly, as a social media post said, they chucked him quickly out of his MP bungalow in Delhi, and the entire Karnataka opened the doors of their hearts and homes for Rahul Gandhi! Did the BJP pay a heavy price for yet another desperate act by removing him from Parliament on a flimsy charge? Yes, and as has been widely perceived, they have paid a heavy price in Karnataka, and they will inevitably pay a heavy price in all the other states in the days to come, as Rahul Gandhi has said in as many words in his first press interaction after the verdict.

Indeed, so why did the BJP top brass, never shy of a cacophonous chorus, suddenly becomes so cocooned, ostrich-like, in their singular soliloquy? Indeed, as former PM, HD Deve Gowda, said, that assembly polls are fought on local issues, and here is a PM fighting as if it is 2024! He is obviously right. The defeat in Karnataka is a transparent sign that it’s a bleak, bleak scenario waiting for the PM and his one-man party in the days to come, even as four more states go to the polls now, and even as the PM seems eternally on an election mode, despite the myth that he works 24/7 and never ever sleeps.

Sleep or insomnia, the farce is certainly going to be followed by a nightmare. Immorality is surely commonplace, despite the lofty promise of Na Khaoonga, Na Khane Doonga, but, immortality, too, is commonplace, as great poet Jorge Luis Borges wrote. From here to eternity, there seems no light in this dingy, narcissist tunnel for the fake messiah, and the clean sweep of the Congress, plus the resounding drubbing of the BJP, is the latest, prophetic, writing on the wall.

With the South now BJP-mukt, and fortunately so, and Punjab, Bengal, Rajasthan, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, outside its grasp, even while they broke the Congress to make a government in Madhya Pradesh, all they are now left is the original hate lab of Gujarat, and the newest hate lab in a backward UP, where the vicious politics of caste and communalism still rules supreme. There is no hope from Akhilesh Yadav or Mayawati, and the Gujarat Congress is in shambles; hence, the BJP will call the shots there.

However, in the rest of the country, the monologue of a boring Mann Ki Baat is not working. Witness, among others, nurses in Chandigarh missing the hyped-up 100th anniversary programme on radio, despite strict instructions. Consequently, they have been punished – even as the International Nurses Day was celebrated all across the world as a tribute to their dedicated devotion and selfless hard work. So why are the nurses compelled to hear this or that show? If this is not a sign of compulsory adulation for a dictator, then what is it?

The answer, as the song says, is blowing in the wind! It is blowing at Jantar Mantar in Delhi with our valiant world champion women wrestlers’ dogged struggle against a history-sheeter bahubali who is shamefully backed by the PM and his one-dimensional regime. With Adani still in doldrums, and with Mukesh Ambani apparently missing from the scene, and despite its deep pockets, their humiliating defeat in Karnataka is an abject sign that their acche din is all but over.

The Opposition has sensed it as well. Mamata Banerjee has hit the nail hard by promptly declaring that it is the end of the road for the BJP. Besides, given the fact the party has become a one-man show, the BJP, as a party, too, might find the ground slipping from beneath its feet with the fall and fall of Narendra Modi. In that case, it might end up as a picture in contrast, and a pleasing, picturesque picture I must say — finally, and at last, a BJP-mukt, secular, pluralist, democratic Bharat!

Highest Vote Share in 34 Years: Cong Creates History In Karnataka

The Congress party created history by registering the biggest vote share by any party in the Karnataka assembly polls in the last 34 years.

In the 2023 assembly elections results of which were declared on Saturday, the grand old party won 135 seats and recorded a whopping 42.88 per cent of the vote share. This is seen as the biggest victory for any party in Karnataka since 1989.
Activist Yogendra Yadav on Saturday took to Twitter and said that this is going to be the biggest victory for “any party in Karnataka” in 34 years by vote share and seat.

Yadav claimed that it was in 1989 during Veerendra Patil’s regime when the grand old party had won 178 seats with a vote share of 43.76 per cent.

According to figures posted by Yadav on Twitter, the Congress won 132 seats in Karnataka with a vote share of 40.84 per cent in 1999. This was followed by the party’s second win with 122 seats and a vote share of 36.6 per cent in 2013.

Similarly, in 1994, JDS won a total of 115 seats with 33.54 per cent of a vote share. In 2008, BJP won 110 seats with a vote percentage of 36.86.

This was followed by BJP in the 2018 assembly elections, wherein it won 104 seats with a vote percentage of 36.3. BJP had in 2004, got a total of 79 seats with a vote percentage of 28.33.

An incumbent government has not returned to power in Karnataka after a full term of five years since 1985 as no political party could win a successive mandate in the state.

It last happened in 1985, when the Ramakrishna Hegde-led Janata Party was voted into power.

So far, Karnataka had 23 chief ministers since 1952. Basavaraj Bommai served as the 23rd Chief Minister since 2021. In the 2018 assembly polls, BJP emerged as the single largest party with 104 seats, Congress won 80 seats and JD(S) got 37 seats.

According to the Election Commission of India, Congress won 135 seats. BJP managed to win 66 seats. JD(S) won 19 seats, while four seats were won by others.

Pertinent to mention, the Karnataka election was a major victory for Congress after Kharge became party president.

The Congress victory has come at a time when it is seeking momentum ahead of assembly polls later this year in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Telangana and the Lok Sabha polls next year.

The next task for the Congress is to choose a chief ministerial candidate with both state Congress chief DK Shivakumar and former chief minister Siddaramaiah aspiring for the post.

Earlier today, the Congress party said in its resolution that the decision of selecting the Chief Minister has been left in the hands of All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Mallikarjun Kharge.

After the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting, AICC in charge of Karnataka Randeep Surjewala said that the three observers, Sushil Kumar Shinde, Deepak Babaria and Jitendra Singh will seek opinion from every MLA and then convey it to the high command.

On the other hand, for BJP, the defeat has come as a setback as it ended up losing the only southern state it ruled.

Congress president also took the “BJP mukt South India” jibe at the saffron party after the results.

After the results, outgoing CM Basavaraj Bommai on Saturday tendered his resignation to Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Congress over its victory in assembly polls. He appreciated the hard work of BJP workers and said that the party will serve Karnataka with even more vigour in the times to come.

“Congratulations to the Congress Party for their victory in the Karnataka Assembly polls. My best wishes to them in fulfilling people’s aspirations,” PM Modi said in a tweet.

He added, “I thank all those who have supported us in the Karnataka elections. I appreciate the hard work of BJP Karyakartas. We shall serve Karnataka with even more vigour in the times to come”.

Congress leader and former MP Rahul Gandhi hailed the party’s victory in Karnataka assembly polls and said that the people of the state defeated the “politics of hate”.

Speaking to reporters at the Congress headquarters in the national capital, Rahul Gandhi said that the Congress stood with the poor.

“The poor defeated crony capitalists in Karnataka…We fought the elections with love…,” he said.

Karnataka went to the polls on May 10 for the 224-member state assembly and saw a record polling of 72.68 per cent. A party needed 113 seats to get the majority. (ANI)

Polling Stations Closed After Turkey Presidential Election

Turks have finished voting for one of the most consequential elections in Turkey, a contest that could bring an end to or extend President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s 20-year rule, Al Jazeera reported.

The polling station closed after the general election concluded at 5 pm on Sunday.
The opinion polls have said that Erdogan’s main opposition or the one that could challenge his throne is Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who heads a six-party alliance, a slight lead, with two polls on Friday showing him above the 50 per cent threshold needed to win outright. If neither wins more than 50 per cent of the vote on Sunday, a run-off will be held on May 28, according to Al Jazeera.

Voters will decide the fate of Turkey’s democracy less than three months after a February 6 earthquake killed more than 50,000 people and displaced more than 5.9 million across southern Turkey and northern Syria.

Turkish President held his last election rallies in Istanbul on last Saturday, before a so-called propaganda ban went into effect, accusing the opposition of working with US President Joe Biden to topple him while making a final appeal in the run-up to the biggest challenge to his 20-year rule, according to CNN.

One of his talking points has been that the opposition is receiving orders from the West and that they will bow down to Western nations’ wishes if elected. At a rally in Istanbul, Erdogan also recalled comments made by Biden, and published by the New York Times in January 2020, when he was campaigning for the White House.

Analysts predict a record voter turnout this year, and a tight race between Erdogan and the main opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the leader of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) and presidential nominee for the six-party Nation Alliance bloc.

More than 1.8 million voters living abroad already cast their votes on April 17, the Turkish newspaper Daily Sabah reported Wednesday, citing the country’s deputy foreign minister.

Turkey’s demographics are also expected to play a role. Most of the provinces struck by the February earthquake were strongholds of Erdogan and his AK Party. But Supreme Election Council (YSK) chief Ahmet Yener said last month that at least 1 million voters in quake-stricken zones are expected not to vote this year amid displacement.

And even if Kilicdaroglu wins the election, some analysts say Erdogan may not hand over power to his successor without a struggle, reported CNN.

Apart from Erdogan and Kilicdaroglu, right-wing Ancestral Alliance candidate Sinan Ogan is also running.

Centrist Homeland Party leader Ince said he had withdrawn following a “slander campaign” against him. He has faced weeks of lurid allegations on social media in Turkey and the Ankara public prosecutor’s office said Thursday it had opened an investigation into potential blackmail.

His party, Homeland, will however remain in the parliamentary race.

The 59-year-old ran for president in 2018 but lost against Erdogan. In March this year, he broke away from Kilicdaroglu’s CHP and joined the presidential race. He initially rebuffed calls by his former party to pull out amid concern that he’d take votes away from Erdogan’s rival.

Ince did not endorse any of the remaining candidates; his name will also remain on the ballot. His withdrawal is a potential boost to Kilicdaroglu.

Some analysts say that if Erdogan loses the vote by a small margin, it opens up the possibility for him to contest the results. And if past experience is a gauge, the president and his AK Party may not take a defeat lying down, reported CNN. (ANI)

IPL 2023: RCBs’ Collective Efforts Seal 112-Run Victory Against RR

Rajasthan Royals succumbed to the third-lowest score in the history of the Indian Premier League as Royal Challengers Bangalore bowlers produced a breathtaking display with the ball to clinch the victory by 112 runs at the Sawai Mansingh Indoor Stadium on Sunday.

While chasing a target of 172, RR batters failed to deal with the intensity and aggression of the RCB bowlers. Mohammed Siraj set the tone of the game as he dismissed in-form batter Yashasvi Jaiswal for a two-ball duck.
Wayne Parnell came in to replace Josh Hazlewood and he didn’t disappoint with the ball as in the second over of the game he ended up dismissing RR’s backbone of the batting lineup.

Jos Buttler’s poor run with the bat continued as he followed the footsteps of his partner for a score of a two-ball duck. Sanju Samson and Joe Root tried to bring the hosts back into the game but they failed to achieve it.

RR skipper Samson played a half-committed shot which went straight into the hands of Anuj Rawat. After facing 10 balls, RR had lost their three batters for a score of 7. As Buttler and Samson became the victims of Parnell, the middle-order battlers were left with too much to do in the next 18 overs.

RR tried to string partnerships but RCB kept knocking on their door for more wickets. Former RCB player Devdutt Padikkal was next in line to return to the dugout as Michael Bracewell picked up the fourth wicket of the match. Siraj made a top-class effort to get to the ball and ensure that he took the catch cleanly.

With wickets falling like a house of cards, the English batter Root cracked under the pressure which was mounting up with every single ball. He became Parnell’s third victim after scoring 10(15).

One of the shining stars of this IPL Dhruv Jurel had the perfect opportunity to leave his mark by giving RR a chance to fight back against the odds. But Bracewell didn’t allow such a situation to unfold as he dismissed Jurel for a score of 1(7).

RR were on the brink of registering the lowest score in the history of IPL against the team which holds the unwanted record. The West Indian batter made sure to avoid such as he struck three consecutive sixes in Karna Sharma’s over.

Ravichandran Ashwin ended up losing his wicket in the 8th over as his bat was a few centimetres short of crossing the line.

After Ashwin’s departure, Hetmyer couldn’t keep up the momentum as he was dismissed by Glenn Maxwell for a score of 35(19).

After his dismissal, RR ended up losing both of their wickets in the 11th over of the game. They ended their innings with a score of 59/10.

Earlier, RCB’s in-form openers Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis came to bat, and they gave a solid start to the team. At the end of the powerplay, RCB were at 42/0. Faf du Plessis 23* off 199 balls and Virat Kohli 17 off 17 balls.

The duo added a 50-run partnership in 6.3 overs however, Virat dismissed quickly in the 7th over when Asif delivered a slower bowl. Virat scored 18 off 19 balls.

Glenn Maxwell then joined Faf in the middle, both together added 50 runs on the scoreboard off 38 balls. RCB brought their 100-run mark in 13.2 overs.

RCB skipper brought his seventh fifty in the season, smashing a half-century in 41 balls. But in the same over, Asif picked the scalp of Faf with a full-length delivery.

In the next over, Adam Zampa who has made his return to the team dismissed Mahipal Lomror who scored just one run facing two balls.

Maxwell clinched his fifty off 30 balls in the 16.5 over. Sandeep Sharma cleared Maxwell with a brilliant Yorker hitting the wickets in the 17.3 overs.

In the last over Anuj Rawat showed some class by hitting two consecutive sixes and one four providing RCB 171/5 in 20 overs.

Adam Zampa proved his place in the side, as he took two wickets by conceding just 25 runs. Asif also picked two scalps whereas Sandeep Sharma dismissed one batter.

Thailand Election

Thailand Election: Polling Ends, Counting Underway

Thailand’s Election Commission (EC) is now counting votes after the general election concluded at 5 pm on Sunday with the ‘Move Forward Party’ in the lead in both the constituency and party-list competitions, Bangkok Post reported.

According to Bangkok Post, as of 7: 44 pm (Local Time), the Move Forward Party had taken the lead in both the constituency and party-list competitions, followed by the Pheu Thai Party and the Bhumjaithai Party.
The election results are still being tallied, and the unofficial results are expected to be available around 11 pm, according to Bangkok Post citing the EC.

As per CNN, the election is the first since the youth of the country led the mass pro-democracy protest in 2020 and also the second after the military coup in 2014 ousted an elected government.

Voters are tipped to deliver a resounding defeat to the ex-army chief and coup leader Prayut Chan-o-cha after a youth-led mass pro-democracy protest in 2020. This protest was mainly yearning for change and the traditionalist, royalist establishment.

In this election, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, daughter of Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted from power by a military coup in 2006, has stood as the prime ministerial candidate alongside property tycoon Srettha Thavisin and former justice minister Chaikasem Nitisiri, reported CNN.

Her father was ousted from power by a military coup in 2006. Her aunt’s government suffered a similar fate eight years later.

The opposition Pheu Thai party, in April, announced Paetongtarn, 36, as one of three prime ministerial candidates for the coming May election, alongside property tycoon Srettha Thavisin and former justice minister Chaikasem Nitisiri.

Thailand’s incumbent Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, the former army chief 2014 seized power from the Pheu Thai government after Paetongtarn’s aunt Yingluck was removed from power in a controversial court ruling, reported CNN.

It seems that Paetongtarn is coming back to take revenge on Prayut in this election.

Some 50 million Thais are thought to have turned out to elect 500 members to the House of Representatives in Thailand’s bicameral system which was heavily rejigged through a new constitution written by the military that seized power nine years ago, according to CNN. (ANI)
