Rahul Taking Classes On China from Chinese Ambassador: Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday took a jibe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and said that he was taking classes on China from the Chinese ambassador.

Speaking on ‘Foreign Policy of Modi Government,’ he said, “I would have offered to take classes on China from Rahul Gandhi but I discovered he was taking classes on China from the Chinese ambassador,” responding to the Congress leader’s criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi government’s handling of relations with China.
Jaishankar referred to Rahul Gandhi’s meeting with the Chinese ambassador to India during the Doklam crisis. He attacked the government, suggesting that new territory had been lost to China’s salami slicing.

“I know everything in politics is political. I accept that. But I think on certain issues, we have a collective responsibility to at least behave in a way that we do not weaken our (India’s) collective position abroad to do what we have seen in the last three years in China,” Jaishankar said, adding, “often very misleading narratives are put in.”

Jaishankar also hit out at misleading narratives and misrepresentations, adding, “We had, for example…a bridge which the Chinese were building on Pangong Tso. Now, the reality was that the particular area first Chinese came in 1959, and then they occupied it in 1962. But that’s not the way it was put across. This happened in the case of some of the so-called model villages as well, that they were built on areas which we lost in 62 or before 62. Now, I don’t believe you will very rarely hear me say 1962, that shouldn’t have happened, or you are wrong, or you are responsible. What has happened has happened. It’s our collective, I would say failure or responsibility. I do not necessarily attribute political colouring to it. I would like to see is actually a serious China conversation. I’m prepared to accept that there are different viewpoints on that, but if you reduce it to kind of slanging match, what can I say after that?”

This is not the first time that Jaishankar hit out at Rahul Gandhi for his comments relating to China. Earlier in March, Jaishankar had criticised Rahul Gandhi while speaking at the India Today Conclave in New Delhi.

“When Panda huggers try to be China hawks… it doesn’t fly,” the minister said, adding, “He [Rahul Gandhi] speaks admiringly about the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). He compares, very poetically, I must say, the BRI with the Yellow River in China gushing forward. The BRI goes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. It violates our national integrity and sovereignty. He doesn’t have a word to say about it,” Jaishankar said at the Conclave.

Jaishankar also dealt with India-Iran relations and Chabahar port, he said, “Port in Iran very important for us…It has been difficult, Iran has been under sanctions, but we have made steady progress…”

He said that India is pushing hard for Chabahar port because “unless something miraculous changes in Pakistan, which I don’t expect, I will have to find a way around that to develop access to central Asia.”

Speaking about his interaction with Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Goa, he said, “If I have a good guest, I am a good host…”

He also dealt with Bhutto’s India media engagement raking several issues barring SCO and said, “Pakistan conducts terrorism and asserts its right to do terrorism…,” pointing out how SAARC has a member – Pakistan that doesn’t “follow basic rules international relations…” supporting terror and blocking connectivity.

“Not in our interest to be locked into perpetual hostility with Pakistan, nobody wants that….somewhere we have to draw and stand by our red lines…” said EAM Jaishankar, adding, “if neighbour attacks my city…I dont think it should be business as usual.” (ANI)

Vidya Dinker

‘The 40%-Govt Slogan Has Struck a Chord; It Will Be the Undoing of BJP’

Vidya Dinker, an activist based in Mangalore, Coastal Karnataka, says the issue of corruption will prevail upon the Hindutva brand of politics in this Assembly Elections. Her Views;

All elections are important but this election has a special significance – especially for those who cherish progressive, secular and constitutional values of the country. There is no doubt that the BJP has, over the years, consolidated its polarizing politics, especially in Coastal Karnataka, and parts of Dakshin Kannada. But there is a counter-discourse too which has become prevalent in the rest of the state now, especially about its corrupt regime.

The catchphrase ‘40 per cent sarkara’ is on every one’s lips. Besides, the issue of day-to-day survival for ordinary people is an issue which haunts the electoral landscape. That would decisively go against the BJP in these crucial assembly elections.

The Congress has an extremely good chance of coming back to power in the state. Tactically, the party has taken in its fold some disgruntled and high-profile leaders from the BJP which would decisively damage the BJP in many parts of the state. By such pragmatic moves, the Congress feels it would arrive at a secure number as a majority, become a winning party, and, hence, would be effectively able to ward off any poaching operation by a cash-rich BJP, as it did last time, by sabotaging an elected Congress government in Karnataka.

One crucial factor is: which way will the JD-S go? It is routinely perceived that they would back the Congress in the final instance after the results are declared. Will they?

The fact is that Siddaramaiah has had a long stint with the original JS-S, and it is well-known that he has had a troubled and uncomfortable relationship within that party. Siddaramaiah is the tallest and most inspirational leader in Karnataka, and this iconic image comes as a leader from the backward castes. He is, therefore, the natural contender for the post of chief minister once the Congress wins. However, if the Congress does not get a clear majority, what happens? In that case, will the JD-S support his candidature as CM?

ALSO READ: ‘BJP Has Failed To Polarize Karnataka Politics, Repeatedly’

It is well known that DK Shivakumar knows how to pull muscle-politics; has deep pockets; and is a good organizer. The JS-S is likely to back his candidature if there is a face-off between him and Siddaramaiah. That would be a dicey situation, indeed, for the Congress, if it falls short of a clear majority. Now, what is going on in the mind of HD Devegowda, the JD-S supremo, is hard to tell.

I personally believe that DK Shivakumar should not become the chief minister. I also think that large parts of Karnataka will go the Congress way. For instance, in Dakshin Kannada, the BJP had won seven and Congress one seat in the last assembly polls. This time the tally might be 5-3, with one BJP defector winning on a Congress ticket. So the wind will certainly shift, except in Coastal Karnataka where the BJP seems to have captured the hearts and minds of the people with its communal and hate politics.

They have succeeded in not only consolidating hate politics, but have also instilled a subconscious fear of a polarizing and vicious narrative: will your daughter come back home safe… will your cow be taken away by them… will your son be safe if we are not in power, etc. Fear-mongering has been a key to their success. They had earlier succeeded in pumping up the love jihad narrative effectively, and, thereby, captured the voter’s fancy.

Not anymore it seems. The most crucial factor is the countercurrent among the masses in Karnataka, including within the traditional support base of the BJP. This contemporary current expresses deep disgruntlement with the BJP and its government, that it has not stood with the ordinary people in the terrible pandemic and post-pandemic crisis, that ordinary people are struggling to survive, that it is corrupt, and that the 40 per cent kickback is a reality.

This belief has been embedded in each voter’s mind in the state. That would be certainly disadvantage BJP, even while the Lingayat-Vokkaliga-Backward-Muslim etc., caste-conundrum plays out as it has done always during the final phase of the polls.

Rahul Gandhi With Delivery

Rahul Rides Pillion With Delivery Boy To Reach Bengaluru Hotel

Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his mega roadshow in Bengaluru on Sunday, standing on a vehicle bedecked with flowers, with huge crowds lining the streets and showering him with petals, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi rode pillion on a delivery boy’s scooter to reach his hotel.

Rahul, who is scheduled to hold public meetings in the state capital ahead of May 10 Karnataka Assembly polls, rode pillion on the delivery boy’s scooter for almost 2 kms.
With just four days left for the Assembly polls, all contesting parties are going through the last legs of their campaign, pulling out all stops to woo voters.

Meanwhile, PM Modi on Sunday held a mega roadshow in the city, waving at a large, enthusiastic crowd lining up both sides of the route on the road.

PM started his roadshow from the Kempegowda statue at New Tippasandra Road and it will culminate at Trinity Circle.

A nearly 10-kilometre-long roadshow in Bengaluru for the second straight day is expected to boost the BJP’s poll prospects on the last leg of the campaign for the single-phased elections on May 10.

The huge crowds, which lined the streets to catch a glimpse of PM Modi, were also pictured playing musical instruments, including drums.

Sex For Job Scandal

BJP Alleges ‘Sex For Job’ Scandal, Demands Sacking Of Punjab Min

The BJP on Sunday alleged that the National Commission for Scheduled Castes issued a notice to the Punjab government in connection with a complaint of alleged “sexual misconduct” of a boy by a state minister, and demanded his sacking from the cabinet.

“The story of how the AAP is against the Scheduled Caste is being exposed through ‘The AAP Story’. A story of terrifying exploitation, sexually predatory behaviour, and moral degradation to the lowest levels. The National Commission for Scheduled Castes has taken cognisance and issued a notice to the Punjab government over its minister Lal Chand Kataruchak,” BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala said at a press conference in the national capital on Sunday.
“The victim came on camera saying that he was subjected to sexual misconduct by the minister, who lured him with the promise of a job. This minister, exploiting his position, power, and influence, abused and exploited this young boy. The entire testimony is on video,” Poonawala added.

The BJP leader said the Punjab governor also took cognisance of the matter and asked the government if the minister can continue in his post in light of these grave allegations.

“The victim filed a complaint with the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, based on which notice was issued to the Punjab government, DGP, and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on the action taken. The governor also took cognisance of the matter. The forensic report on the video established the veracity of the clip. The governor has asked the Punjab government to clarify if such a person could remain in the cabinet,” he said.

Describing the alleged incident as the Aam Aadmi Party’s “sex-for-job model”, Poonawala alleged that the party’s top brass gives “protection” to such leaders.

“This is their ‘sex-for-job’ model. Once a Delhi Minister was caught on camera indulging in misconduct with a woman. The AAP defended him at a press conference. The ‘sex-for-job’ model is growing popular (in the AAP) with protection at the highest level,” the BJP spokesperson alleged.

The BJP leader demanded Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP supremo to sack him and conduct an unbiased investigation.

“I demand from the nominal CM of Punjab, Bhagwant Mann and the Super CM Kejriwal as well as the acting CM Raghav Chadha to come clean on what action would be taken against this minister. Can there be an impartial probe till he remains a minister? We demand that the minister be sacked and a probe instituted against him at the earliest. The probe should be free from any influences by the state government. We don’t the state government to manipulate the probe in any manner. Why didn’t Bhagwant Mann act against this minister for so long? Why are AAP and Kejriwal defending such a man?” he said. (ANI)

As per the statement, no major incidents of violence have been reported since the rescue operation began resulting in the relaxation in the curfew hours which are now from 7 am to 10 am today in Churachandpur.
“Ray of hope due to efforts of 120- 125 Army and Assam Rifles columns who are working tirelessly for past 96 hours to rescue civilians across all communities, curb violence and restore normalcy has emerged with no major violence being reported and curfew, therefore being relaxed from 7-10 am today in Churachandpur followed by flag march by Security Forces immediately thereafter,” the Army statement said.

“Total 23000 civilians have been rescued till now and were moved to own operating bases/ military Garrisons,” it added.

Earlier on May 3, owing to tension over the move to protect forests in the face of resistance from illegal immigrants and also the High Court’s direction to include Meitei in scheduled tribes, the district administration imposed a complete curfew in violence-hit Churachandpur in Manipur.

As per the statement, the past 24 hours also witnessed Army significantly enhancing surveillance efforts through aerial surveillance, movement of UAVs and redeployment of Army Helicopters within Imphal Valley.

Manipur Government had requisitioned Army and Assam Rifles on May 3 and 4.

State’s Director General of Police P Doungel has said that the situation in the State has improved after the intervention of security forces.

Forces including RAF, BSF and CRPF have been deployed in Manipur, he said and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) chief Kuldiep Singh, has been appointed as the security advisor.

The State government has also appointed Additional Director-General of Police (Intelligence), Ashutosh Sinha as the overall operational commander to control the situation in Manipur, the State DGP said.

The Army in a statement earlier on Friday said that situation in Manipur had been brought under control through coordinated actions by all stakeholders.

“The situation has been brought under control through coordinated actions by all stakeholders. IAF undertook continuous sorties from two airfields in Assam employing C17 Globemaster and AN 32 aircraft,” Indian Army had stated

Violence had erupted in the immediate aftermath of inter-community clashes in a few districts of the northeastern State amid protests against the inclusion of the majority Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category. (ANI)
