Namibia India Jaishankar

‘Cheetah’, New Symbol Of India-Namibia Friendship: Jaishankar

Upon conclusion of his Namibia visit, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar highlighted that Project Cheetah has emerged as a “new symbol of friendship between India and Namibia.”

Jaishankar noted that shared political struggles of many decades, the challenge of preparing for a more contemporary world, the promise of technology, the excitement of common training and shared experiences are among the things that bind India and Namibia together in many ways.
“There is so much today that binds India and Namibia together and in many ways, perhaps an agile, fast-moving animal that is equally comfortable in both societies is an appropriate symbol of what awaits us in the future,” Jaishankar said after ending his Namibia visit.

He also said, “The relocation of Namibian Cheetas to the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh obviously stirred a lot of interest in India. But equally, as I discovered going to Namibia, it has been very much in the public discourse of that country as well.”

Jaishankar added that the mainstay of every relationship is the people to people contact. There is a deep interest in Indian arts and culture, a sense that the two countries are today moving forward to develop and nurture our traditions and heritage.

“Trade and investments have grown steadily, trade levels now approaching almost USD 300 million. And where investments are concerned, the presence of 22 Indian companies dealing with diamonds, who today impart training and skills to Namibians as part of their business model, is something that India has reasons to be proud of,” the EAM said.

Jaishankar also held conversations on the International Year of Millets, which according to him were “so personally driven by Prime Minister Modi.”

Namibia too has not just a tradition of consuming millet, but actually imports Bajara from India from time to time. So how to increase production and consumption was an important conversation with possibilities for the future, he said.

“There are both army and Air Force teams present in Namibia who have supported the operations of the Namibian Defense Forces in different ways. And we look forward to India’s export capabilities in defence finding resonance in this country,” the External Affairs Minister said.

Jaishankar’s visit to African countries, South Africa and Namibia were held from June 1 to June 6.

Notably, India and China are developing their engagements with Africa proactively.

While China has been in Africa’s infrastructure, mining, oil and natural gas sectors for many years, despite moving late, India has worked through training, education and capacity-building programmes – which have been very well-received by the countries.

Recently, the Union Cabinet has approved the opening of 18 new Indian Missions in Africa over a four-year period from 2018-2021. This move is seen as a major boost to India-Africa relations. (ANI)

‘School Syllabus Isn’t A Holy Book Cast in Stone; It Needs Periodic Revisions’

Sarika Kansal, 44, a senior teacher with a reputed school in Greater Noda West, says NCERT syllabi require regular amendments to stay relevant to the changing times. Her views:

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) recently made some changes in the curriculum of certain subjects. These changes have drawn mixed reactions from the academia across the country. While some teachers consider it to be a positive step towards rationalization of school learning, others believe that it may have a negative impact on the students’ overall learning experience.

One of the major changes that have been made in the NCERT syllabus is the reduction in the number of chapters in certain subjects like Science and Social Science. This has been done to make the syllabus more concise, relevant, and easier for the students to follow. I welcome this progressive and holistic change, as I believe that it will help students focus better on the key concepts and principles of these subjects.

Another significant change that has been introduced is the inclusion of chapters on new and relevant topics, such as sustainable development, gender equality, and mental health, in subjects like Civics and Psychology. This change has been drawn positive response from the majority of teachers. I believe that it will help students develop a more inclusive understanding of society and the world around them. It will not only help students become more aware and sensitive to social issues but also enable them to become responsible citizens of the country.

Kansal welcomes new changes in NCERT syllabi

Some teachers have raised concerns over the NCERT’s decision to remove certain chapters and topics from the syllabus, as they believe that it would deprive students of an in-depth understanding of the subject matter. Many teachers feel that certain crucial topics must be a part of the curriculum, even if they appear to be complex or challenging, as these topics can help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Some teachers have noted that the NCERT curriculum’s latest changes may lead to an overemphasis on memorizing facts and information, rather than understanding and applying them. They fear that the reduction in the number of chapters may lead to a shift towards learning by rote, which could do more harm than good to students’ learning and development.

I personally believe that education and learning must remain conscious of the new changes being brought in society as well as new advancements in the field of science and technology. School syllabus cannot be a Holy Scripture cast in stone. It has to be revised periodically to suit and serve new realities. Overall, the NCERT’s latest changes in the syllabi are also part of this continuous process of revision.

addition, NCERT is open to feedback and suggestions from teachers and other stakeholders. Those who do not subscribe to the changes brought in can register their differences via media and social media and generate a debate or discussion. This is how academic sector works. Consequently, proper steps need be taken to ensure that the revised curriculum is student-friendly, socially relevant, and effective.

Punia, Sakshi Reach Anurag’s Residence For Talks

Wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik reached the residence of Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur following fresh proposal by the government for discussion on the issues raised by them during their protest.

Anurag Thakur had said on Tuesday that the government is willing to have a discussion with the wrestlers on their issues.

The wrestlers have been protesting to press their demand for arrest of BJP MP and WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over sexual harassment allegations against him.

Olympics medallist Sakshi Malik had said earlier in the day that they will discuss the talks proposal of the government and take a consensus decision.

“We will discuss the proposal given by the government with our seniors and supporters. Only when everyone gives their consent that the proposal is fine, then will we agree. It won’t happen that we will agree to anything that the government says and end our protest,” Malik said in a telephonic interview with ANI.

Late on the evening of June 2, when the deadly rail accident took place in Balasore in Odisha the public had very little idea of how devastating its impact would be. The challenge was staring in its face for the first responders and the concerned department of Indian Railways.

Within hours of the accident, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw was on the ground. While he traversed through the accident site, understanding the technicalities of the accident, and of course monitoring the rescue and relief operations, it was not without a plan.
“What is the next thing we need to do and what is the next plan that is exactly how the minister works, this was no different,” a senior official told ANI.

There was definitely a plan in place to ensure maximum utilisation of the human resources with the single focus being on saving as many lives as possible, ensuring medical assistance was provided at the earliest to the injured and most of all work was done to ensure the train line was clear and running as soon as possible.

“Eight teams were constituted with at least 70 members to work on the ground. Then each of these two teams was supervised by Senior Section Engineers (SSE). Further, these SSE were supervised by one DRM and one GM Railways. They were further supervised by a member of the Railway Board”, a senior railway ministry source told ANI.

Murmu Serbia

Murmu Emplanes For Serbia On State Visit

In the next leg of her two-nation tour, President Droupadi Murmu has departed for Serbia after concluding her visit to Suriname.

She will be in Serbia on a state visit till June 9, at the invitation of Serbian President Aleksander Vucic.

Murmu was in Suriname from June 4 to 6 and at the invitation of Suriname President Chandrikapersad Santokhi.

President Murmu’s visit to Serbia comes at a time when tensions have been rising in the past week in Kosovo, which declared independence from Serbia in 2008. Several clashes are being reported with protesters over the installation of ethnically Albanian mayors in a disputed election. As many as dozens of NATO peacekeepers have sustained injuries this week in northern Kosovo as they clashed with ethnic Serbs, inciting fears of a larger escalations between Serbia and Kosovo, The New York Times reported.

However, Ministry of External Affairs has said India does not recognise the declaration of independence of Kosovo, and that the situation in the country won’t affect President Draupadi Murmu’s visit to Serbia.

Addressing a special briefing on the President’s visit to Suriname and Serbia, MEA’s Secretary West Sanjay Verma said, “Well, we are aware of the recent disturbances in Kosovo, which is at the extreme southern tip of Serbia. We have no reason at this point of time, as I say this, to be concerned that those incidents or have any consequence on the state visit of my president, nor have we been suggested otherwise by the hosts.”

“On the matter of Kosovo, our stance has been quite clear and consistent that we do not recognise the declaration of independence by Kosovo. We, however, also believe that any differences need to be resolved through dialogue,” Verma added.

He said he was hopeful that the disturbances in the country over the last few days are resolved peacefully through talks and that there is a de-escalation of the situation.

Replying to a media query on whether the President’s visit was planned before the political crisis, Verma said it was pre-planned.

“For a matter of record, this has been a longstanding invitation. I won’t remember exactly how long, but at least over a year, year and a half. I think because of the conflict in Ukraine, it was it had to be rescheduled. And now we think it’s a conducive time for this visit to take place,” Verma added.

Serbia does not recognise the sovereignty of Kosovo and has the backing of China, Russia and five other EU nations, which also do not recognise the country. (ANI)
