India, UAE Sign MoUs To Promote Use Of Local Currencies For Cross-Border Transactions

Reserve Bank of India and Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Saturday signed two MoUs  for the use of local currencies for cross-border transactions and cooperation for interlinking their payment and messaging systems.

Two Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) were exchanged in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi.
The agreements aimed at facilitating seamless cross border transactions and payments, and fostering greater economic cooperation between India and United Arab Emirates (UAE).

“The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Central Bank of UAE (CBUAE) signed two MoUs for establishing a framework to promote the use of local currencies- the Indian rupee (INR) and the UAE Dirham (AED) for cross-border transactions; and cooperation for interlinking their payment and messaging systems,” RBI official release said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “This is a very important aspect of India-UAE cooperation. It paves the way for enhanced economic collaboration and will make international financial interactions simpler.”

The MoUs were signed by the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Shaktikanta Das and the Governor of the Central Bank of UAE, Khaled Mohamed Balama.

The MoUs were exchanged between the two Governors, in the august presence of the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi and Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE.

“The MoU on establishing a framework for the use of local currencies for transactions between India and UAE, aims to put in place a Local Currency Settlement System (LCSS) to promote the use of INR and AED bilaterally,” it said.

The MoU also covers all current account transactions and permitted capital account transactions. Creation of the LCSS would enable exporters and importers to invoice and pay in their respective domestic currencies, which in turn would enable the development of an INR-AED foreign exchange market.

“This arrangement would also promote investments and remittances between the two countries. Use of local currencies would optimise transaction costs and settlement time for transactions, including for remittances from Indians residing in UAE,” the release added.

Under the MOU on ‘Payments and Messaging Systems’, the two central banks agreed to cooperate on linking their Fast Payment Systems (FPSs) – Unified Payments Interface (UPI) of India with Instant Payment Platform (IPP) of UAE; linking the respective Card Switches (RuPay switch and UAESWITCH); and exploring the linking of payments messaging systems i.e., Structured Financial Messaging System (SFMS) of India with the messaging system in the UAE.

The UPI-IPP linkage will enable the users in either country to make fast, convenient, safe, and cost-effective cross-border funds transfers. The linking of Card Switches will facilitate the mutual acceptance of domestic cards and processing of card transactions. The linkage of messaging systems is aimed to facilitate bilateral financial messaging between the two countries. (ANI)

Chandrayaan 3 To Explore Human Habitat On Moon: Union Minister Jitendra

Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh on Saturday that India’s lunar mission Chandrayaan 3 will explore the possibilities of human habitat on the moon.

Jitendra Singh
The Union Minister said Chandrayaan has placed India as the leading global player as far as space technology is concerned.

“The outcomes are going to be at multiple levels to the benefit of India. It has placed India as the leading global player regarding space technology and the space sector,” Jitendra Singh said.

Chandrayaan-3 was successfully launched on GSLV Mark 3 (LVM 3) heavy-lift launch vehicle from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Andhra Pradesh’s Sriharikota as per the scheduled launch time on Friday.

The journey from Earth to the moon for the spacecraft is estimated to take about a month, and the landing is expected on August 23. Upon landing, it will operate for one lunar day, which is approximately 14 Earth days. One day on the Moon is equal to 14 days on Earth.

Chandrayaan-3, India’s third lunar exploration mission, will make India the fourth country after the US, China, and Russia, to land its spacecraft on the surface of the moon and demonstrate the country’s abilities for safe and soft landing on the lunar surface.

Chandrayaan-3 is the ISRO’s follow-up attempt after the Chandrayaan-2 mission faced challenges during its soft landing on the lunar surface in 2019 and was eventually deemed to have failed its core mission objectives.

Chandrayaan-3 will be inserted into the Lunar Transfer Trajectory after the orbit-raising manoeuvres. Covering a distance of over 300,000 km, it will reach the Moon in the coming weeks. Scientific instruments will study the Moon’s surface and enhance our knowledge.

Chandrayaan-3 is equipped with a lander, a rover, and a propulsion module. It weighs around 3,900 kilograms. (ANI)

Arvind kejriwal flood planning

Day After ‘Teamwork’ Pledge By CM, L-G, AAP Alleges Conspiracy Behind Delhi Flooding

The blame game over the Yamuna flooding in the national capital took centrestage, a day after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena issued a joint statement stressing ‘teamwork’, with Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj on Saturday alleging that the BJP-ruled Centre and the Haryana government had conspired to throw the national capital into a flood crisis.

Coming down heavily at the BJP at a press conference on Saturday, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader said, “Delhi received 153 mm of rainfall on July 8, which was a record in two decades. It rained moderately in the evening on July 9, but thereafter, the city exprienced no further rainfall. So, the big question is — if there was not a drop of rain in Delhi since July 9, how did the national capital come to be flooded like this?”
“The answer, as is now evident, is that the BJP-led central government and the Haryana government, where too, the BJP is ruling party, conspired to push Delhi into a flood crisis,” Bharadwaj claimed.

The remark appeared to be in conflict with the show of unity by the L-G and the Delhi CM at the joint press conference on Friday, with the former saying, “We need to work as a team”.

“This is not the time to resort to a blame game or point fingers at each other. Right now, we need to work as a team. I, too, can say a lot of things but this is not what we should do at this time,” the L-G added.

CM Kejriwal said people, who have been grappling with flooding woes over the last couple of days, will get a measure of respite soon, as the rising waters of the Yamuna was receding slowly but surely.

“…water flooded different areas due to many reasons. Here, the flooding took place because of a breach (of drain regulator) while at Raj Ghat, it was a caused due to backflow of water from a drain. Several other places were flooded due to the backflow of the Yamuna waters. However, the people will get some respite soon as the Yamuna waters have started receding,” the CM said.

However, at the press conference on Saturday, Bharadwaj said, “The danger mark of the Yamuna is at 205.33 metres. Till yesterday, it was flowing at 208.6 metres. As is recorded in history, Delhi witnessed a catastrophic flood in July 1998, when the Yamuna flowed at 207.49 metres. The level currently is even higher. The reason for the prevailing situation in the Capital is that the regulator of the Hathni Kund barrage is based in Haryana’s Yamunanagar, which is located 228 kms away from Delhi.”

“We sent our team over there as we learned that water was being released deliberately towards Delhi,” Bharadwaj added.

Further, hitting out at the BJP, he said, “From July 9 to 13, water was deliberately released towards Delhi as part of a conspiracy. The report of the Central Water Commission, dated July 12 and 13, that we received from the Hathni Kund Barrage, says that the water was not released into the eastern cannal, towards Uttar Pradesh.”

“Last year, in August, water was not only released towards Delhi but the eastern and western canals as well. The flow was evenly distributed between multiple states because of which there was no flood in Delhi,” he added.

The AAP minister said, “False statements are being made that water cannot be release into the eastern canal as it is very small. Now, after the AAP highlighted this issue in the media, the water is now being released into the eastern canal as well.”

Earlier, Union Minister Nityanand Rai, while stressing the need for all stakeholders to set aside their differences and come together in the interest of putting Delhi out of its misery, said, “They (AAP) are resorting to the politics of lies. It is what the party was founded on. It is in their culture.” (ANI)

‘BJP In Maharashtra Did Exactly What It Had Slammed Uddhav For’

Vistasp Hodiwala, an advertising professional based in Mumbai, says BJP has kept its alliance partners on their toes, and will cut them to size at an opportune time. His views:

The situation in Maharashtra politics, as it exists now, has evolved from a tragedy into a terrible farce. If there was any sliver of doubt remaining in anyone’s mind about the naked opportunism that has possessed the state of Maharashtra (except I may add, the ideologically-driven multitude), that has been surgically removed with this unalloyed stroke of hubris that comes with a belief in their own infallibility. The real question to ask would be what constitutes that multitude in terms of sheer numbers?

In some sense, the BJP has gone and done exactly what they had earlier accused the erstwhile Shiv Sena of. They have gone and allied with a party with which they have zero ideological ground to share. Just how this will play out against the backdrop of unbridled cynicism within the citizenry is impossible to make sense of at this early stage.

The other question is, ‘are they’: that is, is the Shiv Sena cadre still with Uddhav Thackeray? Or, is that what we would like to believe, given our biases?

This may well be true but that would be a conclusion to be drawn after someone has toured the state and gotten a sense of the voters’ pulse. Uddhav does have a lot of goodwill in many parts of Maharashtra, and, as has been seen in the past, the ‘aam aadmi’ does not take kindly to outright betrayals (in this case, the blow delivered to the son of a man they have adored); but we have no empirical evidence at the moment to make hardcore conclusions.

What can be safely concluded, though, is that Eknath Shinde’s clout and position within the alliance is no longer on rock-solid footing, as it was even a couple of months ago. Perhaps, the BJP’s grand strategy is to keep its allies on their toes and cut them to size when the opportunity presents.

ALSO READ: ‘Uddhav Has Gained Public Sympathy And Support’

To his credit, Uddhav had realised this and thought the better of aligning with them; but, that did not come about without significant damage to his own party.

Will Shinde implode?

Well, I am sure he knows he is certainly not getting another shot at being the chief minister in a year’s time. There is just too much competition. And that would probably make his own position shakier even within his own splinter party. Insecurity can make leaders do strange things; hence, we will just have to wait and watch from here on.

As for Sharad Pawar, let’s be honest. Pawar is a tenacious politician and a canny fighter, but the man is not getting any younger. When the chips are down, day-to-day politics can be an exhausting affair. However, what Pawar does have as formidable support are two leaders within the party who are not just ideologically driven (read secular), but, also, extremely combative when it comes to taking the BJP on in its own backyard.

In Amol Mitkari (the state NCP general secretary) and Jitendra Ahwad (the national general secretary), Pawar has two individuals who can form the core of a new NCP. The real strength will be in shaping the party in the image of Supriya Sule, who, I personally believe, is the politician to watch out for. She has the smarts and the empathy needed to be a long-distance-runner, like her father, and she has only just begun.

So, what about the ordinary folks of Maharashtra? Are they sick and tired of this brazen power-grab?

Yes and no! In an increasingly polarised world of voters, the ordinary citizen has become a bigger trapeze artist than a politician. They can find ludicrous justifications in why their leaders do the things they do and make peace with all of it in a heartbeat! They may be tired and cynical, but most of them still cannot let go of their outdated ideological opportunism even in the face of clear, personal and institutionalised perfidy.

One can only hope that they are sick and tired enough to teach these worthies a lesson they won’t ever forget. But, I won’t be holding my breath on it!

Sarma Creating Divide Between Muslims And Asamese: Badruddin Ajmal

All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal on Saturday accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of trying to separate Asamese Muslims from the youth with his remarks on the rising prices of vegetables in the state.

Speaking to media persons at Garigaon in Guwahat, the AIUDF chief claimed that Assam CM Sarma’s statement that “Miya” (Muslim) vendors were responsible for the price rise of vegetables in the city was demeaning and hurtful towards the minority community.
“The CM said people from the Miya community will not be allowed to sell vegetables and spices in Guwahati. This kind of statement isn’t appropriate for the chief minister of a state. He is the head of the state and it isn’t right for him to be making such remarks. We are disheartened by the CM’s remarks,” Ajmal, also a perfume baron, said.

The AIUDF chief alleged further that Sarma’s statement creates a chasm between the Muslims and the other Asamese people, including the youth.

“By making such statements, the Assam CM is trying to separate the Muslims from their fellow Asamese brothers and sisters. The government will have to bear the responsibility for any unrest that this statement foments,” the AIUDF chief warned.

Earlier, on July 13, the Assam CM said the soaring prices of vegetables in state capital, Guwahati, was largely because of the fact that the vendors largely belong to the “Miyan” (Muslim) community.

“Miya vendors are responsible for the rising prices of vegetables in the city. Most of the vendors, who are selling vegetables at inflated rates, are from the Miyan community,” CM Sarma told reporters earlier.

Reacting to Sarma’s remark, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief, Asaduddin Owaisi, said, “There is a mandali (group) in the country, who will blame Miyan-ji even when a buffalo does not give milk or a hen does not lay eggs in their homes. They would, perhaps, not hesitate to blame their personal failures on Miyan bhai as well.” (ANI)

Rafale Fighters After Successful Trial

India Selected 26 Rafale Fighters After Successful Trial

The central government announced on Saturday a selection of Rafale fighters to equip the Indian Navy with the advanced combat jets.

According to French aerospace company, Dassault Aviation, 26 Rafale fighters for the Indian Navy will add to the 36 advanced fighters that are already in service.
“This decision comes after a successful trial campaign held in India, during which the Navy Rafale demonstrated that it fully met the Indian Navy’s operational requirements and was perfectly suited to the specificities of its aircraft carrier,” Dassault Aviation said.

“This selection confirms the excellence of the Rafale, the exceptional quality of the link between Dassault Aviation and the Indian Forces, and the importance of the strategic relationship between India and France,” it added.

India’s Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for the procurement of 26 Rafale Marine aircraft for the Indian Navy on Thursday.

DAC, which held a meeting here on Thursday, also granted the AoN for the procurement of three additional Scorpene submarines under Buy (Indian) category, which will be constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL).

A Defence Ministry release informed that the acceptance of Necessity for Rafale Marine aircraft has been approved along with associated ancillary equipment, weapons, simulator, spares, documentation, crew training and logistic support for the Indian Navy from the French Government, based on Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA).

It said the price and other terms of purchase will be negotiated with the France government after taking into account all relevant aspects, including comparative procurement price of similar aircraft by other countries.

Further, the integration of Indian-designed equipment and establishment of a Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) Hub for various systems will be incorporated into the contract documents after due negotiations.

The release said the DAC also approved the proposal to lay down guidelines for achieving the desired indigenous content in all categories of capital acquisition cases.

“It will help in achieving ‘Aatmanirbharta’ in critical manufacturing technologies and life-cycle sustenance of defence platforms and equipment through indigenous manufacturing,” the release said. (ANI)
