Essar Group

Essar Group To Set Up 1GW Green Hydrogen Project In Jamnagar

Essar Group is setting up a 1-gigawatt green hydrogen project (1,000 megawatt) in Gujarat’s Jamnagar, besides expanding its ports and power businesses in the western state, said Prashant Ruia, Promoter Director, Essar Group.

Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, Ruia said, “We are focusing on three to four areas in India. In Gujarat, we are setting up a 1,000 MW green hydrogen project in Jamnagar. Also, we want to expand our existing power and port projects.”

In December 2023, Essar signed an MoU with the Gujarat government to develop the project, involving an estimated investment of Rs 30,000 crore.

The Union Cabinet in early January 2023 approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aiming to make India a global hub for such technologies’ production, utilisation, and export.

India meets a sizable portion of its energy needs through imports, and this green hydrogen mission is seen as an avenue to reduce the dependence on imported fuel. The initial financial outlay for the mission is pegged at Rs 19,744 crore, which includes research and development activities.

Under this mission, the government aims to raise annual green hydrogen production to 5 million metric tonnes, add renewable energy capacity of about 125 gigawatts, attract over Rs 8 lakh crore in investments, lakhs of jobs, and most importantly, over Rs 1 lakh crore in cumulative reductions of fossil fuel imports.

“I have no doubt about that and within India, obviously Gujarat is playing a very, very important role and as far as Essar is concerned, majority of our investments have always been in Gujarat,” Ruia of Essar Group said.

The Essar Group representative Prashant Ruia informed that the company has so far invested more than Rs 150,000 crore in Gujarat. “Obviously, it’s been an excellent destination for all kinds of investments.”

Speaking about the group’s participation in Vibrant Gujarat, he said, “Our involvement has been with Vibrant Gujarat since 2002 and we have seen what kind of progression work and one of the important things about Vibrant Gujarat is that whatever commitments and investment commitments have been made over the years, those investments have actually come on ground”

“Basically, India is now really one of the most important investment destinations in the world,” he asserted. (ANI)

Lakshadweep

Tourists Visiting Lakshadweep Praise Hospitality

Tourists coming in to explore Lakshadweep’s Agatti Island say that the Lagoon beach, one of the popular beaches on the island, is clean and pristine but say that the Island needs to improve on some of its facilities and popularise it so that it turns into a global tourism destination. However, one of the tourists said that for them the Agatti island is none less than Maldives.

One of the tourists who has come to visit the Lagoon beach as part of a cruise said that for them beach is none less than Maldives and they will not get enough time to explore the island in just a few hours.

“We are here for just 3-4 hours. I think time will get short for us to explore the beauty of this island. This is none less than Maldives for us. We are enjoying a lot,” a tourist named Olivia who has come to Lagoon Beach from Kolkata said, speaking to ANI on Wednesday.

Another tourist said that though the beach is neatly maintained, there is a need for Lakshadweep to be made into a popular tourism destination so that it leads to employment opportunities for the island and its population.

“The beach is fine and neatly maintained. More propaganda is needed for Lakshadweep. Andaman is more popular, but Lakshadweep is not. When we were talking to drivers they were telling us that leaving behind tourism there is nothing else. If tourism is improved their livelihood will also improve,” he said speaking to ANI.

Another tourist said that though the beach is environmentally friendly, the authorities need to work on advertising so that more people can visit. She also added that there may be some recreational facilities on the island so that it can attract people.

“It is a nice place to visit. There is no pollution and it is very environmentally friendly. But more information should be passed on so that others can also come and visit the place. More facilities should be there like some huts and recreational centres so that people can come here, explore and tell other people,” she said, speaking to ANI.

Another tourist who is from Maharashtra appealed to others to come and visit Agatti Island and suggested to come in groups.

“This beach is beautiful and clean…We have come on a cruise. We appeal to everyone to come here more often, in groups if convenient.” he said speaking to ANI.

Locals at Agatti Island expect more development on the island. They said they are not against the development of tourism, but the administration needs to take their demands and problems into consideration.

The locals complained about the lack of hospital facilities and said that they have to take patients to Kochi for treatment. The island has primary health centres but locals want multi-speciality hospitals on the island. They demanded development of road infrastructure and other facilities as well.

Interest in Lakshadweep peaked when Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 2 visited the Union Territory of Lakshadweep and shared several pictures, including an ‘exhilarating experience’ of him trying his hand at snorkelling.

Soon, in a post that has now been deleted, the Maldivian Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Mariyam Shiuna, made a mocking and disrespectful reference to PM Modi.

Indians, including cricketers and film celebrities, have since come out in open support in promoting local beach destinations and other tourist spots. They also voiced support for PM Modi’s call for promoting beach tourism in Lakshadweep.

The Maldives government has, however, distanced itself from the remarks made by its ministers. Maldivian Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer said that these remarks against foreign leaders are “unacceptable” and do not reflect the official position of the Maldives government. (ANI)

Animal

‘Films Like ‘Animal’ Legitimise Misogyny, Normalise Violence’

Kashu Shubhamoorty, a Delhi-based lawyer, says the box office success of a film like Animal reflects the current state of our society

When I am asked about how I feel about movies such as Animal, I think of the increasing violence prevailing in our society, in India as well as in other countries. I heard someone say that Animal is the movie of the century! It is indeed painful that some people find gory violence and brazen sexism entertaining. This trend has been going on since quite some time, and we have reached a stage where such movies actually become runaway success.

Cinema such as Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal encourages and establishes sexual violence against women as legitimate, whereby men treat women of any age as a commodity and do not feel guilty in assaulting even a child. I remember, in an interview, famous social activist, late Kamla Bhasin, said that some of the Bollywood songs present women as a commodity. This pattern has become more apparent in movies like Animal where a woman is explicitly told that she is liked because she can bear better children. Even more surprising thing is that the woman in question here is shown to find this an attractive proposal!

In another scene, when a female character is asked to lick the shoes of the male protagonist to show her love towards him. Such misogyny also manifest in many ways in real life, and thereby lead men to expect similar, demeaning gestures from women.

A Bobo doll experiment was conducted way back in 1961 when the world was very different. Through this experimental project, the impact of violence was studied and it was found that it can make drastic changes in the behaviour of people. In the experiment it was seen that the impact of aggressive behaviour stays as a long-term phenomenon on children.

With this example we can understand what the impact of films like Animal or Salaar would make on the behaviour of people, especially men. The study is not only applicable to children, but also applies to adults. Now, with the advent of glorified violence, which is shown in many video games, and exposure to aggressive and hyper-masculine media/movies, the impact can become much more devastating.

Dr Hyacinth Byron-Cox studied that Bandura’s Bobo Doll experiments served to successively indicate that aggression can be learned through observational means, and the behaviour observed is not only confined to real-life scenarios, but, extends to include violence exhibited anywhere in various conditions.

That a film like Animal has become mainstream cinema also reflects the current state of our society. The commercial, box office driven film industry will make only that kind of cinema which sells; they will also make cinema that is sponsored, so the basic criterion is profit.

A positive fact is that some of the recent propaganda films have failed. They have not done well commercially – which is an indicator that large sections of people cannot be totally swayed by propaganda. However, this still makes me think — why should a movie contain so much violence, while there is no meaningful content, story, script or plot, worth its name?

Terror Attack in Iran

Terror Attack in Iran Augurs Bad Omen for West Asia

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi joined mourners in the southern city of Kerman on Friday last week for the funerals of 89 people killed in twin blasts claimed by the Islamic State (Daesh), according to the Iranian media.

Suicide bombers struck crowds gathered near the tomb of Revolutionary Guards General Qasem Soleimani to mark the fourth anniversary of his killing in Baghdad in a targeted US drone strike. The terrorist attack on 3 January killed 89 people, which included many women and children as well as at least a dozen Afghans, state television said.

Raisi vowed to avenge the killings; saying, the time and place will be determined by our (Iranian) forces. Whereas, Revolutionary Guards chief Hossein Salami said, we will find you wherever you are.

In a statement published on Thursday 6 January on Telegram, the Daesh claimed two of its members ‘activated their explosives vests’ at the gathering. A staunch enemy of Daesh, Soleimani headed the Guards’ foreign operations arm, the Quds Force, overseeing Iranian military operations across the Middle East.

Though some Iranian officials have already hinted at Israel’s involvement in the attack, journalists and active media members have also started bringing to the limelight the differences between Daesh’s latest statement and its previous ones to prove a second party’s complicity.

The Tehran Times reported that the extremist group acknowledged responsibility for the assault more than 30 hours following the explosions. This departs from its usual pattern, as the group typically asserts its role in acts of terror immediately after their occurrence.

Also, Daesh generally precedes attacks with ominous posts on its social media platforms shortly before they unfold. Surprisingly, no such forewarning preceded the blasts in Kerman, contrasting with the group’s established modus operandi.

Moreover, in the image disseminated by Daesh, faces of both the attackers are completely obscured, with their faces fully covered and their eyes deliberately blurred. While previous attacks carried out by Daesh members featured images of the perpetrators in full clarity.

An Iranian journalist Mona Hojat Ansari analysing the evidence says that the text of the recent statement also exhibited notable disparities from prior declarations made by the extremist group.

ALSO READ: Iron Women Of Iran

Historically, Daesh has consistently referred to Iran as the ‘land of Persians’ or the ‘state of Khorasan’. However, the latest communication from the terrorists explicitly uses the country’s actual name: Iran. This shift has sparked suspicions regarding the origins of the statement, prompting questions about whether it might have been authored by an external entity and subsequently handed over to the group for dissemination on its social media platforms.

Further the characteristics of the attack also raised suspicions about Israel’s potential involvement, Iranian media pointed out. As per an Iranian lawmaker who inspected the blast site, the explosives employed to trigger the suicide vests were identified as RDX, which has frequently been associated with Israel’s past use in carrying out targeted assassinations within Iranian territory.

Despite the claim from Daesh, Iranian officials have continued to accuse Iran’s arch foes Israel and the United States of complicity in the attack. “IS has disappeared nowadays”, Salami said, adding that its remaining members, “only act as mercenaries” for US and Israeli interests.

They assert that Israel has been trying to weave a web of provocations to turn the whole region into chaos, leading to an all out war in the Middle East. Further, the US wants to involve Iran first, in this foreseeable confrontation The Iranian media claims that following its significant setback on 7 October by Hamas, Israel has grown increasingly desperate for direct involvement from Washington in the on going war.

Despite the US’s diplomatic support and provision of weaponry used in Gaza, it has, thus far, displayed reluctance to escalate the conflict beyond Gaza. In fact, reports suggest that the US has been pressuring Israel to halt its fruitless campaign by the end of January.

Iranian media claims that recognising its inability to eliminate Hamas and its deteriorating international standing, Israel now views a regional war as necessary to permanently eliminate the so-called Axis of Resistance. From Israel’s perspective, the opportunity to draw the US into a war with Iran and its allied groups may not arise again.

This motive has led to a series of orchestrated attacks in recent weeks aimed at provoking Iran and triggering a full-scale regional conflict. The sequence began with the assassination of a top Iranian military advisor in Syria, followed by an attack targeting a Hamas leader in Beirut. While some analysts anticipated a similar assault on Iranian soil, the direct targeting of civilians in a terrorist attack was largely unforeseen.

Meanwhile, tensions remain heated on the Israel-Lebanese border. An Israeli strike on southern Lebanon on Monday, 8 January killed a top Hezbollah commander, the Iran-backed group said in a statement. Clashes between Hezbollah and the Israeli army have intensified since the war in started.

While it is still debatable who carried out the attack or on whose instructions, it is clear that any direct American entry in the region may escalate the Gaza conflict, besides bringing chaos to the whole region. So far, the US has rejected any suggestion that it or its ally Israel were behind the bombings, while Israel has not commented on the issue.

However, one should not pay heed to the provocative statements by Israel against its other Arab neighbours and by Iran against Israel, the collective aim should be to get the Palestinian issue resolved at the earliest, as per the aspersions of the Palestinian people and try to limit the war and stop its spread in the region, as any further confrontation or attacks may prove catastrophic for the global peace.
