Raveena: Lost Out On Movie Roles Due To Jealous B’wood Heroine

In a three-decade-long cinematic journey, Raveena Tandon has received numerous accolades for her work. But it has not been an easy ride always as she has faced struggles too.

In an exclusive interview with ANI, the ‘Mohra’ star revealed how she lost films in the nineties as a co-star’s partner was ‘insecure’.
“There was a film that was offered to me for which the original star cast was a very big hit pair and me and another person who was a hit pair. But unfortunately for me, that person who was my co-star in a couple of films, started dating one of the heroines who couldn’t stand me, who had this real competitive jealousy, rivalry with me,” she said

“So she kind of told him that if I see you talking to her or something, I am going to dump you…You can’t do more films with her. We were a hit pair. He told me whenever she is going to come on the sets, I am not going to talk to you. I asked why we are friends. I mean there is nothing, you know whom I am dating so what’s the big deal, I am dating someone else. So he was like no, no, but don’t talk to me when she is around and suddenly one day, I was told sorry you have to leave these films because he doesn’t want to work with you anymore,” she added.

Raveena said she tried to reason out with the co-star.

“I was like but why? As luck would have it that the producer to whom he went and said or recommended his girlfriend, the producer only dropped him. Said I don’t want to sign her because she doesn’t suit the role, only Raveena suits the role. Okay fine, if you don’t want Raveena for it, then I will drop you and her but I will never sign that girl,” she said.

Raveena also talked about her stepping out of films.

“So there were people who stick to their conviction also what the character suits, right? So that does happen as well. It’s okay that they didn’t ask us for the signing amount back or whatever. I haven’t kind of breached the contract, so it’s from their (side). And then there are so many times that you do it out of emotion. I remember a very popular film director came up to me and he was in love with his heroine. And he signed me opposite Sunny for some film and he came to my house and said you are like my younger sister, you are my sister. You know I am madly in love with her, I want to marry her but she will kill me and I have signed you this and that. So, please help me make my relationship work. I said no problem, I will step out of the film. And she got the role and I stepped out of the film. That film did kind of well. I have done that also so many times, helped people but nothing worked for them. So, I think, ultimately, it’s karma then.”

Raveena was recently honoured with the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award in India.

On the work front, she received a lot of appreciation for her performance in the blockbuster hit pan-India film ‘KGF- Chapter 2’.

In the coming months, she will be seen rekindling her on-screen chemistry with Sanjay Dutt after a two-year gap in the romantic-comedy ‘Ghudchadi’.

Apart from that, Raveena will also be seen in Arbaz Khan’s production ‘Patna Shukla’. (ANI)

Sensex Gains 900 Points, Adani Group Companies Gain

Indian Stocks Start Fresh Week In Red; Adani Ports Gains

Indian stock markets started the fresh week on a subdued note and lost nearly half a percentage point.

Sensex closed at 60,506.90 points, down 334.98 points or 0.55 per cent, whereas Nifty closed at 17,764.60 points, down 89.45 points or 0.50 per cent.
Among the Nifty 50 stocks, Divis Labs, JSW Steel, Hindalco, Tata Steel, and Infosys were the top five losers, while Adani Ports, IndusInd Bank, BPCL, Apollo Hospitals, and Hero Motocorp were the top five gainers, National Stock Exchange data showed.

“The recent price action on the benchmark front indicates uncertainty among the participants and that might continue in the near term. Traders should thus maintain their focus more on identifying opportunities in the sectors that are showing resilience. However, it’s easier said than done as we’re seeing restricted participation. Also, managing overnight risk is equally important citing the prevailing volatile scenario,” said Ajit Mishra, VP – of Technical Research, at Religare Broking.

The Adani Group companies’ shares, which are in news for over a week now, continue to decline on Monday, though with varying degrees.

Adani Enterprises declined 2.0 per cent, Adani Transmission 10.0 per cent, Adani Green Energy 5.0, Adani Wilmar 5 per cent, Adani Power 5 per cent, Adani Total Gas per cent. The only Adani Group company — Adani Ports — closed the day 8.6 per cent higher.

“After the Adani crisis broke out, the market has been on a twin track – crash in Adani stocks and stability in the rest of the market. The banking segment, which also came under pressure on fears of the crisis impacting banks, has recovered,” said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services.

“The crisis is unlikely to pose any systemic risk to the Indian banking system. It appears that the Adani crisis’ impact on the market is slowly dying down. Excellent results from ITC and SBI are likely to support the market,” Vijayakumar added.

The January 24 report by a US-based short seller Hindenburg Research claimed the Adani Group of having weak business fundamentals and .accused it of stock manipulation and accounting fraud. In a long response, Adani Group had said the report by Hindenburg Research was not an attack on any specific company but a “calculated attack” on India, its growth story, and ambitions. It added the report was “nothing but a lie”.

Going ahead, much will also depend on the RBI’s monetary policy decisions and outlook.

The three-day Reserve Bank of India monetary policy committee meeting commenced on Monday with the outcome of the deliberations set to be announced on February 8.

“We believe that RBI will go slow with the rate hikes now since inflation is at 5.72 per cent below the upper tolerance limit of 6 per cent. The US Fed has also slowed its pace of interest rate hikes with a 25 bps hike recently. With a benign outlook on global inflation, central banks across the world have now reduced their pace of rate hikes,” said Apurva Sheth, Head of Market Perspectives and Research, Samco Securities.

“We believe that RBI will hike rates by another 25 bps in February meeting. This will push the rates to a seven-year high of 6.5 per cent. RBI will go with a wait-and-watch approach after this meeting and slowly shift focus on growth,” Sheth added.

In its December monetary policy committee meeting, the RBI raised the policy repo rate, the rate at which the RBI lends money to all commercial banks, by 35 basis points (bps) to 6.25 per cent.

RBI has hiked the key policy rate by 225 basis points since May 2022 to 6.25 per cent to cool off domestic retail inflation that stayed above its upper tolerance limit for nearly three quarters. Raising interest rates typically cools demand in the economy, thereby putting a brake on inflation.

SBI Research, in a report published before the RBI meeting started today, expects.believes India’s central bank will pause the policy rate hike during he February 6-8 review meeting. (ANI)

UP: Yogi Announces Upto 50% Subsidy On Setting Up Solar-Powered Food Processing Units

In an attempt to boost the food processing sector in the state, the Uttar Pradesh government headed by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has decided to provide upto 50 per cent subsidy to interested investors, according to a government statement.

According to a statement, the decision assumes significance in view of the fact that the state is one of the leading producers of various foodgrains, sugarcane and several fruits and the Yogi Government since its first term has laid special emphasis on promoting agricultural products and food processing to increase the products’ presence in domestic and foreign markets.
The government has brought the UP Food Processing Industry Policy-23, providing many concessions and subsidies to the entrepreneurs in different segments in order to promote the products. Besides, the new policy also exempts investors in the food sector from paying stamp duty on setting up of a unit, Mandi Fee and Development Fee, while reducing the loss incurred by investors and using startups in production, the statement added.

According to the statement, as food processing industries are typically micro and small scale, mostly located in rural areas, independent power industrial feeders for them would not be a viable option. The Yogi government has decided to give a 50 per cent subsidy to investors for setting up solar power plants of up to 75 KVA. The government has also decided to give a 90 per cent subsidy to food processing units owned and operated by women.

Since Uttar Pradesh is a landlocked state, the government has also decided to provide, a transport subsidy of 25 per cent of the actual transport cost of exports of foodstuff to the entrepreneurs to make the food processing industry more competitive in the state.

The transportation cost will cover the shipping of the food product from the place of manufacturing/production in the state to the port of the importing country. Besides, a 35 per cent capital subsidy will be given to entrepreneurs on their expenditure on plant, machinery and technical civil works for the establishment of food processing units in the state with a maximum limit of Rs 5 crores. Not only this, a capital subsidy of 35 per cent will be given on the expenditure related to plant, machinery and technical civil work for the expansion of the units with a maximum limit of Rs 1 crore, the statement said.

According to the new UP Food Processing Industry Policy-23, if the Chak Road comes to the place where the food processing unit is set up, an investor won’t be required to pay 25 per cent of the amount on the circle rate. Earlier, for this, the investor had to pay 25 per cent of the value of the land along with giving land at another place equal to the land on Chak Road. Similarly, earlier, entrepreneurs setting up the food processing industry on CLU (Conversion of Land Use), were charged a 20 per cent circle rate on the agricultural land, who will now get a 50 per cent exemption on this.

The Yogi government has also announced a 75 per cent exemption in External Development Fees for entrepreneurs.

Earlier, the External Development Fee, in most cases used to be more than the rate of the land. The investors have also been exempted from paying stamp duty for setting up a food processing unit. This will be reimbursed by the Food Processing Department through the budget. Furthermore, the Mandi fees and cess will also be waived on agricultural products brought from other states for processing as it would increase employment and the revenue tax, the statement added. Sisodia's Judicial Custody Till April 3

AAP To Move SC After Ruckus Stalls Delhi Mayoral Polls Again

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Monday announced that the AAP will move the Supreme Court against the BJP’s alleged bid to stall the mayoral polls in the national capital.

The deputy CM claimed that the BJP councillors deliberately created a ruckus in the MCD to ensure the mayoral elections don’t take place.
Addressing a press conference in the national capital, Sisodia said, “The BJP is not letting a peaceful mayoral election to take place. The BJP garnered 104 seats in the MCD elections while the AAP won 134 seats. The people of Delhi gave a clear mandate against the BJP and in favour of the AAP.”

The Delhi municipality was adjourned for the third time on Monday amid a ruckus.

The AAP councillors objected to presiding officer Satya Sharma’s decision to declare that the alderman would vote at the municipality meeting for the mayoral polls, said Sisodia.

Targeting Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, Sisodia said, “The presiding officer was nominated illegally by the L-G but still we went ahead with his decision and insisted on a fair voting.”

“She (presiding officer) came to the meeting saying that the alderman will vote. The Article 243R of the Indian Constitution says that in any legislature of a state, the alderman shall not have the right to vote in the meeting of the municipality. The same is written in the MCD Act,” the Deputy CM said.

He said, “The presiding officer also declared that all three elections for Mayor, Deputy Mayor and the Standing Committee members will be held together. This is unconstitutional.”

“According to the constitution, the three elections cannot be held simultaneously and are to be held in sequence after the mayoral election,” Sisodia added.

On the ruckus in the MCD, the deputy CM said, “Today, all our councillors were sitting silently and only the BJP MLAs were shouting, yelling and trying to provoke our members.”

“The presiding officer declared that two AAP members cannot cast their vote (in the mayoral polls) as they have corruption charges against them. There is no such rule which bars them from voting. And if any such rule does exist, we would insist that some BJP members, should refrain from voting as there are corruption charges against them,” the AAP leader added.

Sanjay Singh, AAP’s national spokesperson, said, “The presiding officer is taking her orders from the BJP. In the last 15 years, they have looted the Delhi Municipal Corporation and wants to continue doing that.”

“That is why we are taking this issue to the Supreme Court in the interest of a legal, constitutional and peaceful mayoral election in Delhi,” Singh said. (ANI)

MCD House Adjourned For 3rd Time Without Electing Delhi Mayor

MCD House Adjourned For 3rd Time Without Electing Delhi Mayor

Proceedings of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi House on Monday were adjourned till further notice without conducting electing a mayor.

This is the third time in a row that the house has been adjourned after a ruckus erupted over nominated members being allowed to vote in the election to the post of mayor, deputy mayor and chairpersons of various standing committees.
After the Aam Aadmi Party won in the civic polls held on December 4 last year, the house convened twice earlier but due to clashes between members of the BJP and the AAP it was unable to name the mayor.

Earlier today house proceedings began ar the Delhi Civic Centre after Presiding officer Satya Sharma arrived and announced that aldermen- nominated members- will be allowed to vote in the process of electing the mayor. To this AAP members objected and the house was adjourned.

After the house proceeding resumed, BJP members started sloganeering accusing the AAP of attempting to poach its councilors.

Aam Aadmi Party Councillors had written a letter to MCD’s Presiding Officer on Sunday, demanding the debarment of aldermen in today’s election of the mayor, deputy mayor and the Standing Committee.

The letter read, “We are the elected Councillors to MCD winning on the symbol of Aam Aadmi Party. On 06.02.2023, the election of Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Standing Committee member shall occur as per the direction of the Competent Authority.”

In the letter to the presiding officer, the councillors also mentioned the law and the Constitution’s provisions, they wrote, “This is to reiterate that as per Article 243 R of the Constitution of India and as given in the Proviso to Section 3 (b)(i) of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957, the nominated members (Alderman) are not entitled to vote in the above-mentioned elections.”

“Article 243 R Constitution of India says; The Legislature of a State may, by law, provide (a) for the representation in a Municipality of (i) persons having special knowledge or experience in Municipal administration. Provided that the persons referred to in paragraph (i) shall not have the right to vote in the meetings of the Municipality. Section 3(b)(i) of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957 Proviso to Section 3(b)(i) of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957 states that “… the persons nominated under this-clause shall not have the right to vote in the meetings of the Corporation,” the letter mentioned.

The letter further read, “It is, therefore, the bounden duty of the Protem Speaker of MCD to respect the law of the land Constitution of India and ensure that these laws debarring the nominated members from voting are implemented in letter and spirits in the ensuing election to the post of Mayor, Dy Mayor and Standing Committee of the MCD.”

“We, therefore, humbly request that under no circumstance, the nominated members (Alderman) be allowed to vote in the upcoming elections of Mayor, Dy Mayor and Standing Committee. Any attempt on the part of the nominated councillors (Alderman) to vote in the above election will be a direct affront and insult to the mandate of the people of Delhi which had sent the Aam Aadmi Party with a majority to the MCD in the 2022 elections,” the letter concluded.

The municipal elections in Delhi were held on December 4 and the results were announced on 7 December, in which the Aam Aadmi Party won a maximum of 134 seats out of 250.

The first two sessions of the MCD house held on January 6 and January 24, respectively, were also adjourned. (ANI)

Why Did BJP Negotiate Ceasefire, Sign Joint Statement With Musharraf: Tharoor

Why Did BJP Negotiate Ceasefire, Sign Joint Statement With Musharraf: Tharoor

Why did the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) negotiate a ceasefire and sign a joint statement with former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, if he was ‘anathema to all patriotic Indians’, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said on Monday

Tharoor’s remarks came while hitting out at criticism from the BJP drawn at him after his tweet condoling the demise of the former Pakistan military ruler by calling him a “real force for peace”.
“Question to BJP leaders frothing at the mouth: if Musharraf was anathema to all patriotic Indians, why did the BJP government negotiate a ceasefire with him in 2003 & sign the joint Vajpayee-Musharraf statement of 2004? Was he not seen as a credible peace partner then?” Tharoor said in his tweet.

Earlier, Tharoor had said, “I was raised in an India where you are expected to speak kindly of people when they die.”

“I was raised in an India where you are expected to speak kindly of people when they die. Musharraf was an implacable enemy and was responsible for Kargil but he did work for peace w/India, in his own interest, 2002-7. He was no friend but he saw strategic benefit in peace, as did we,” Tharoor said.

Tharoor on Sunday condoled the demise of the former Pakistan military ruler stating that though he was once an implacable foe of India, he became a real force for peace between 2002-2007.

“‘Pervez Musharraf, Former Pakistani President, Dies of Rare Disease’: once an implacable foe of India, he became a real force for peace 2002-2007. I met him annually in those days at the UN and found him smart, engaging and clear in his strategic thinking. RIP,” Tharoor said in a tweet.

Tharoor’s post brought fierce criticism from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. Union Minister Rajeev Chandrashekhar hit out at Tharoor saying his post “best describes Cong” (Congress).

Chandrashekhar while taking to Twitter, slammed the party for finding peace in a person who “inflicted terror a backstabbing conflict and tortured our soldiers in violation of every International law”.

“Nothing like a proper military thrashing for Fatcat Pak Dictator Generals to become a “force for peace” and develop “clear strategic thinking”. Not withstandng many lives lost n Intl laws violated n harm caused all around, these Generals will have their admiring fans in India (sic),” Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar wrote in his tweet.

In another tweet, Chandrasekhar said, “That a former Cong Foreign Min (a party that refused to celebrate Kargil Vijay Diwas till 2010) wud think that a Pak General who inflicted terror, a backstabbing conflict n tortured our Soldiers in violation of every Intl law, wud be a “force for peace” – best describes Cong.”

Musharraf passed away on Sunday at a hospital in the UAE after a prolonged illness, reported Daily Pakistan.

Musharraf was Pakistan’s army chief during the Kargil war between India and Pakistan.

The conflict between the two countries is believed to have been orchestrated by Musharraf without the knowledge of the then Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Musharraf was the tenth president of Pakistan after a successful military coup in 1999.

He served as the 10th Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee of Pakistan (CJCSC) from 1998 to 2001 and the 7th top general from 1998 to 2007. (ANI)
