Rajasthan Min Gudha Booked For Abduction

Rajasthan Min Gudha Booked For Abduction

A case has been registered against Rajasthan Minister for Sainik Welfare and Panchayati Raj Rajendra Singh Gudha in connection to an alleged abduction case, the police said on Saturday.

Officials said that the case was registered on the basis of a complaint lodged by a resident of Sikar district.
The complainant Durga Singh alleged that last month, he received a call from the minister asking his whereabouts and later kidnapped him.

“Last month, I received a call from Rajendra Singh Gudha and told him I am in Neem Ka Thana. He later came to my house with a few other people and forcefully dragged me from my home. He took me in his car and said ‘we’ll teach you politics’,” the complainant alleged in his complaint to the police.

“They manhandled me and gave me immense trauma,” he alleged.

Meanwhile, dismissing the allegations, Minister Gudha said that the complainant himself sat in the car and got his hand fractured.

“A lady from Mandawar had daughter’s wedding for which I gave money to her. That man (complainant) forced her to commit suicide. I went to Neem Ka Thana regarding it where Singh sat in the car. His hand was already fractured,” the Minister said.

He further claimed that the complainant did not want to get exposed in society, hence filing a false case against him.

Such false cases should not be filed against a minister, he added. (ANI)

No Case Is Big Or Small For Courts: CJI Chandrachud

Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Saturday said that for a court, every case is important and there are no big or small cases and also highlighted that the top court heard over three lakh cases during COVID-19 pandemic time.

Addressing a gathering to commemorate the 73rd anniversary of the Supreme Court of India, the CJI said, “For the Court, there are no big or small cases -every matter is important. Because it is in the seemingly small and routine matters involving the grievances of citizens that issues of constitutional and jurisprudential importance emerge. In attending to such grievances, the Court performs a plain constitutional duty, obligation, and function.”
CJI Chandrachud made these remarks while addressing a gathering to commemorate the 73rd anniversary of the Supreme Court of India.

Chief Justice of Singapore Supreme Court Sundaresh Menon also attended the program and delivered a lecture on “The Role of the Judiciary in a Changing World”.

Chandrachud also mentioned how the court adopted innovative techniques to reach out to people, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic and said, “Between March 23, 2020, and October 31, 2022, the top court alone heard 3.37 lakh cases through video conferencing.”

He also mentioned that the court is allowing hybrid mode now to attend proceedings from any corner.

“In the recent budget, the Government of India announced the provision of Rs 7000 crore for phase III of the e-Courts project,” CJI said.

He further said that this will help to enhance the accessibility of the judicial institutions and improve the efficiency of the justice delivery system in India.

“Such endeavours will ensure that the Court truly reaches out to every citizen of our country,” he said.

Quoting the first Chief Justice of India HJ Kania, CJI said that the Supreme Court would play an important role in building up the nation.

He also said that in the past few years, the Court has furthered the transformative vision of the Constitution by recognizing and protecting fundamental rights such as the right to privacy, decisional autonomy, and sexual and reproductive choices.

Chandrachud said that the court has emerged as a strong proponent of gender equality whether it be in its interpretation of the laws of inheritance or securing the entry of women in the armed forces.

CJI also highlighted the guidelines related to the death penalty and the various mitigating and aggravating circumstances that a judge should take into account before awarding the death sentence and psychiatric assessment of death row convicts-humanising influence on the law.

Thus, the Court has sought to use the language of the Constitution to humanize law and act as the protector and defender of fundamental rights and liberties, CJI said.

CJI also mentioned about the significant changes relating to the adoption of legislation such as the Competition Law and Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code.

Recalling the foundation of the SC, he said that the Supreme Court came into being on 28 January 1950, two days after India adopted its Constitution and became an independent Sovereign Republic, and now it serves the world’s most populous democracy and is in true aspects a ‘people’s court’ because it is a collective heritage of the people of India. No Impact On India Due To FPO Pullout: Sitharaman On Adani Stock

No Impact On India Due To FPO Pullout: Sitharaman On Adani Stock

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday said that regulators independent of the government will do their jobs and that a pullout of FPO pullout will not have any impact on the perception of India.

“Regulators are independent of the government and they are left to themselves to do what is appropriate so the market is well regulated,” the Finance Minister said while addressing a post-Budget 2023-24 conference in Mumbai on Saturday.
“This is not the first time that some FPO (follow-on public offering) is taken back. How many times that has affected the image of the country?”

On Wednesday, Adani Enterprises decided not to go-ahead with its fully subscribed Follow-on Public Offer (FPO), with the Group chairman Gautam Adani stating on Thursday that it would not be “morally correct” to go ahead with the Rs 20,000-crore share in the current market condition. A report by the New York-based short seller had on January 24, accused Adani Group of brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud among others.

The US-based firm, in its report, raised concerns about shares of Adani group companies having a possibility of declining from their current levels, owing to high valuations. In response, Adani Group said Hindenburg’s report was not an attack on any specific company but a “calculated attack” on India, its growth story, and ambitions. It added the report was “nothing but a lie”.

In its rebuttal Hinderburg Adani has “stoked a nationalist narrative” that seeks to conflate the “meteoric rise and the wealth of its chairman, Gautam Adani, with the success of India itself.”

In today’s press conference in Mumbai addressing a query about Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC)’s exposure to the Adani Group, the Union minister said, “LIC have themselves come on the issue about their exposure to the Company (Adani).”

The Finance Minister said the government wants to sustain the recovery which had kept India at a good level of growth.

“We want to sustain the recovery which had kept India at a good level of growth, which no country – except for one because it’s fuel rich – has managed to reach,” she said.

Sitharaman added, “…and the credit goes to the people of India to somehow absorbing all the little help the government has come up with, either in the form of relief or a policy between 2022 and today.” She added that this recovery momentum should not be lost.

The minister added, “It was an expressed desire of the Prime Minister that capital expenditure should be kept up and that is why it has reached Rs 10 lakh crore.”

On the purpose of her visit to the financial capital, the Union finance minister said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had highlighted that it would serve well if the finance ministry goes all over the country and explain what is the idea behind the Budget.

“For the past three to four years we have started a process that we go to places post-budget and discuss the budget with stakeholders. Take their suggestions etc and include those suggestions into the amendments of the Budget. This was the first such outreach in Mumbai after this Budget,” the finance minister said. (ANI)

Modi Emerges Most Popular Global Leader In Survey

Modi Emerges Most Popular Global Leader In Survey

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been pegged as the world’s most popular leader with an approval rating of 78 percent as per a survey by a US-based consulting firm ‘Morning Consult.’

As per the rating PM Modi’s ratings trump those of other leaders including US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The poll surveyed 22 global leaders for the ratings.
The “Global Leader Approval” survey is based on data collected from January 26-31 this year, said the Political Intelligence research firm which collated a seven-day moving average of adult residents in each country, with sample sizes varying by country.

PM Modi garnered 78 per cent of approval ratings, way ahead of US President Joe Biden, who received 40 per cent ratings. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez.

Obrador, came in second with 68 per cent ratings and Swiss President Alain Berset occupied the third position with 62 per cent approval rating.

The year 2022 has been a phenomenal year in the history of India’s foreign policy, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi whose advice “this is not an era of war” to Russian President Vladimir Putin found an echo across the world.

The Russia-Ukraine war has put the world on the brink of World War III, with every country choosing sides. However, PM Modi put his faith in United Nations and chose the side of peace, asking both countries to solve the problem through “dialogue and diplomacy.”

In September, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit, PM Modi said, “now is not the time for war” — a statement welcomed by the US and other Western countries.

India’s strategy in a multipolar world appears to be avoiding great-power competition and forging its own, nonaligned path.

According to the data shared on the the US-tracking firm’s website, 78 per cent of people approve of PM Modi while 18 per cent disapprove of him. PM Modi’s approval rating has recently increased, standing at 79 per cent in the third week of January.

The list is updated regularly with US President Joe Biden currently ranking number seven. Out of the 22 countries, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, South Korean President Yoon Seok-youl and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida ranked among the last three in the list.

The newly elected far-right leader Giorgia Meloni of Italy, the first female Prime Minister of the country is placed in 6th place with 52 percent ratings.

The survey also featured Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in 4th place with a 58 percent approval rating.

Brazil’s newly elected President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was placed at number 5 with 50 per cent ratings, the Canadian Prime Minister was at number 9th position with 40 percent approvals and UK’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was in 12th position with 30 percent approvals. (ANI)

US regulator Food and Drug Administration India-Made Eyedrops

Probe After US FDA Flags Contamination Risk From India-Made Eyedrops

After the US regulator Food and Drug Administration warned consumers “not to purchase or use EzriCare Artificial Tears due to potential contamination”, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) under the Union Health Ministry and the Tamil Nadu State Drug Controller have initiated a probe into the pharma firm producing this eyedrop, a source aware of the issue said on Friday.

“Teams from CDSCO and TN State Drug Controller, comprising three officials, are on their way to the manufacturing plant located near Chennai. It’s a contract manufacturing plant supplying through others to the US market. This specific drug is not sold in India,” said the source.
FDA has also restricted the imports of products manufactured by Global Pharma Private Healthcare Limited.

“The import alert prevents these products from entering the United States,” FDA said in a statement, adding “FDA is warning consumers and health care practitioners not to purchase and immediately stop using EzriCare Artificial Tears or Delsam Pharma’s Artificial Tears due to potential bacterial contamination. Using contaminated artificial tears increases the risk of eye infections that could result in blindness or death.”

The over-the-counter products, manufactured by Global Pharma Healthcare Private Limited, are intended to be ‘sterile’, the FDA noted.

Global Pharma has initiated a voluntary recall at the consumer level of all unexpired lots of EzriCare Artificial Tears and Delsam Pharma’s Artificial Tears, the source informed further.

FDA added that it recommended this recall due to the company’s current good manufacturing practice (CGMP) violations, including lack of appropriate microbial testing, formulation issues (the company manufactures and distributes ophthalmic drugs in multi-use bottles, without an adequate preservative), and lack of proper controls concerning tamper-evident packaging. Iranian Filmmaker Jafar Panahi Released On Bail After Hunger Strike

Iranian Filmmaker Jafar Panahi Released On Bail After Hunger Strike

Award-winning film director Jafar Panahi was released on Friday from Tehran’s jail, two days after going on a hunger strike against the government, according to Variety citing his wife Tahereh Saeidi’s Instagram post.

Panahi was arrested last July and later ordered to serve six years on charges of propagandizing against the government, a sentence dating back to 2011 that had never been enforced.
The director was released after announcing he was going on a hunger strike to protest against the government after Iran’s Supreme Court last October had overturned a six-year sentence issued against the director in 2010 for “propaganda against the system.”

“Although I am happy about Panahi’s release, it must be said that it should have taken place three months ago,” the director’s lawyer Saleh Nikbakht said in a statement on Friday. He added that Panahi should have been released on bail last October 18, the day his sentence was overturned, as per the Variety report.

The filmaker is out on bail and his case will be reviewed in March, several sources said, adding that his release could only be temporary.

Panahi, 62, is considered one of Iranian cinema’s greatest living masters. He is known globally for prizewinning works such as ‘The Circle’, ‘Offside’, ‘This is Not a Film’, ‘Taxi’, and most recently, ‘No Bears’, which won the Special Jury Prize at last year’s Venice Film Festival.

Panahi was detained in Tehran’s Evin prison for political prisoners before the wave of protests erupted in September, following the alleged custodial death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was held by the country’s erstwhile moral police for allegedly wearing the hijab loosely, Variety reported.

Earlier, another Iranian actor Taraneh Alidoosti was also granted bail after being arrested for over two weeks for criticizing the execution of a man involved in the nationwide protests, CNN reported citing state-aligned ISNA.

She condemned the hanging of Mohsen Shekari, who was killed in December in the first known execution linked to the protests.

Alidoosti’s lawyer told ISNA that she was released on bail. After her release, various photos of her flooded social media. She was seen with flowers and supporters after her release, according to CNN.

Alidoosti, who starred in the 2016 Oscar-winning film ‘The Salesman’ and has appeared in various popular Iranian TV shows, is known for her activism in the ‘MeToo’ movement in Iran’s cinema industry, and was one of several Iranian celebrities to express support for the protests.

Alidoosti was arrested as there was a “lack of evidence for her claims”, CNN reported citing Fars news agency. In November, she shared a picture of herself on Instagram without the Islamic hijab and holding a sign reading “Women, Life, Freedom” to offer support for the protest movement.

After Shekari’s execution, Taraneh Alidoosti in another post said, “Your silence means supporting tyranny and tyrants,” adding, “every international organization who is watching this bloodshed and not taking action, is a disgrace to humanity,” according to CNN.

Since then, her account on Instagram has been deleted. (ANI)

Alerted Uddhav About Rebellion But He Failed To Act: Ajit Pawar

Alerted Uddhav About Rebellion But He Failed To Act: Ajit Pawar

Nearly eight months after the split in the Shiv Sena, which eventually led to the collapse of the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra, NCP leader Ajit Pawar on Friday claimed that then chief minister Uddhav Thackeray was ‘warned’ about a rebellion brewing in the ranks but he failed to act on it.

Pawar was the deputy chief minister in the previous MVA regime.
“Two-three times, we had informed Uddhav Thackeray about a growing rebellion in his party and a few meetings had also taken place on this matter. (NCP chief) Sharad Pawar had also spoken to him about it, but he said he had full confidence in his MLAs and that they wouldn’t take such an extreme step,” Ajit Pawar said while being interviewed at a media conclave in Pune on Friday.

Pawar’s NCP is part of the MVA, which also features the Shiv Sena (Uddhab Balasaheb Thackeray) and the Congress.

“After the first batch of 15-16 MLAs left the party (Uddhav faction of the Shiv Sena), the party needed to stem the tide and keep its flock together. But no such efforts were made. In fact, the general sense as was evident in the media reports at the time was that whoever wanted to leave the party was free to do so,” the former deputy CM added.

He further claimed that the then chief minister preferred to repose his trust in his MLAs with his ‘eyes closed’.

“The Shiv Sena leaders had trusted their fellow party members with their eyes closed and were betrayed. I fail to understand why their leaders let this happen,” Pawar said.

On when exactly did he get an inkling that a rebellion was about to break in the Sena ranks, the NCP leader said he suspected something was afoot as much as six months before the split happened.

“In June (of 2022), some hustle and bustle had started. Then also I had informed Uddhav-ji about Eknath Shinde but he told me that he was aware of it and will speak with Shinde. He assured me that the matter would be resolved,” he added.

Shinde, who emerged as the leader of the rebel Sena faction, eventually unseated the MVA from power and formed the government with the support of the BJP. The revolt saw 39 Sena MLAs and 10 Independent MLAs joining the rival camp, thereby reducing the MVA to a minority in the Assembly. (ANI)

Amid Balloon Row, Blinken Confirms Postponement Of Planned China Visit

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed that he is postponing his trip this weekend to China after the Chinese surveillance balloon was detected in the US region.

Addressing the news conference in Washington, Biden said, “I spoke this morning with the director of China’s foreign affairs office Wang Yi to convey that in light of China’s unacceptable action, I am postponing my plan of travel this weekend to China as you know President Biden and Xi agreed during their meetings in Bali in November that I would travel to Beijing.”
Blinken said that it was ‘detrimental’ to discussions that officials planned to have during his visit. He added that the US and China will continue to keep lines of communication open, including addressing the balloon row.

While responding to a query regarding the surveillance balloon, Blinken said, “It’s very important to emphasize that the presence of this surveillance balloon over the US in our skies is a clear violation of international law and clearly unacceptable. And we’ve made it clear to China. And what this has done s created the conditions that undermine the purpose of the trip including ongoing efforts to build a floor under the relationship and to address a broad range of issues that are of concern for both the countries and the world.”

“So we took the step that I announced earlier today in postponing the planned visit for this weekend meanwhile, we are going to remain engaged with the PRC as this ongoing issue is resolved,” he added.

He further said that once the US detected the balloon, the American government acted immediately to protect against the collection of sensitive information.

The US has communicated with the PRC (People’s Republic of China) government directly through multiple channels about this issue. Members of the State Department consulted with partners in other agencies, and in Congress. The US also engaged with close allies and partners to inform them of the presence of the surveillance balloon in our airspace, he added.

Blinken said he told the Director of the CCP Central Foreign Affairs Office, Wang Yi, on Friday morning that the balloon flight was an “irresponsible act” and a “clear violation of US sovereignty” and international law.

He said he plans to visit Beijing “when conditions allow”. “The world expects the United States and China to manage our relationship responsibly,” he said, adding, “The United States will continue to act in a way that reflects that responsibility. We look to our PRC counterparts to do the same”.

Earlier, Pentagon spokesperson Brigadier General Pat Ryder rejected China’s claim and said they are certain that it is a ‘surveillance balloon’, adding that they had violated America’s airspace and international law, which is ‘unacceptable’.

In the press briefing, he also said that the Aerospace Defence is monitoring the suspected Chinese surveillance balloon ‘closely’.

“The balloon continues to move eastward and is over the center of the continental US. Again, we currently assess that the balloon does not present a military or physical threat to people on the ground at this time, and we’ll continue to monitor and review options,” he added.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said the balloon in the US is a civilian airship used for research, mainly meteorological.

“The airship is from China. It is a civilian airship used for research, mainly meteorological, purposes. Affected by the Westerlies and with limited self-steering capability, the airship deviated far from its planned course,” China’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement on the unintended entry of a Chinese unmanned airship into US Airspace. China Spy Balloon

Another Chinese Spy Balloon Flying Over Latin America, Says Pentagon

The Pentagon Friday evening (local time) said that another Chinese spy balloon was spotted flying over Latin America, a day after US officials said that they tracking a similar surveillance balloon making its way across the United States airspace.

“We are seeing reports of a balloon transiting Latin America. We now assess it is another Chinese surveillance balloon,” press secretary Brigadier General Patrick Ryder said in a statement to CNN.
While it was unclear exactly where the balloon was over Latin America – a US official told CNN that it does not appear to be currently heading to the United States.

Meanwhile, in a Twitter video posted by Inside Paper, the video appears to show an explosion over Billings, Montana.

The US Northern Command is coordinating with NASA to determine what the debris field would be if the balloon floating above the United States were to be shot down, according to a defence official.

Officials said they were still tracking the suspected Chinese spy balloon as it travels across the United States. The Pentagon said it does not currently pose a threat and that it is expected to remain over the US for the next couple days.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken postponed his trip to China this weekend in light of the incident, which he called a “clear violation of our sovereignty,” but said lines of communication will remain open to resolve the issue.

President Joe Biden was first briefed on the balloon Tuesday and has been receiving continued updates from the National Security team, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said. Top leaders of the House and Senate intelligence committees will be briefed next week on the Chinese spy balloon, according to a spokesperson for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

The Pentagon said the balloon over the US is being used for surveillance, rejecting China’s claim that the aircraft is a “civilian airship” for research that deviated from course.

China’s foreign ministry said that the “unmanned airship” entering US airspace was “completely an accident caused by force majeure, and the facts are very clear,” a spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry said Saturday.

The foreign ministry spokesperson said maintaining “contact and communication at all levels” was an important consensus of the Bali meeting between the heads of China and the United States, a reference to the three-hour meeting between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping in November.

The spokesperson affirmed the Chinese narrative about the suspected spy balloon, saying the unmanned airship strayed into US airspace “due to force majeure.”

China has “checked and provided feedback to the US side,” the spokesperson said.

“The unintended entry of a Chinese unmanned airship into US airspace due to force majeure, the Chinese side has verified it and communicated it to the US side. It is a civilian airship used for research, mainly meteorological, purposes,” China’s foreign ministry spokesperson said in a statement responding to the US announcement of the postponement of Blinken’s visit to China.

“The airship is of civil nature and is used for scientific research such as meteorology. Affected by the westerly wind and its own control ability is limited, the airship seriously deviated from the scheduled route” the spokesperson said.

“We have no intention to violate and has never violated the territory or airspace of any sovereign country. Some politicians and media in the US have hyped it up to attack and smear China. The Chinese side is firmly opposed to that,” China said.

The Pentagon on Friday flatly denied the Chinese government’s claim that the balloon serves a civilian research purpose, saying that the US knows it is a “surveillance balloon.”

The Pentagon also said that it wouldn’t attempt to remove the balloon in the US airspace because “any potential debris field would be significant” and could cause “civilian injuries or deaths or significant property damage.” (ANI)
