Delhi Reports Surge In Dengue Cases; 272 Cases In A Week

The sudden surge in dengue cases was registered in the national capital when 272 fresh cases were reported during the past week.

While 3,595 cases of dengue have been reported this year, not a single dengue death was reported this year.
So far this year, 236 cases of Malaria have been reported, and six cases have come to the fore during the last week.

Not a single case of Chikungunya has been reported during the last week, however, 44 cases of Chikungunya have been reported so far this year.

Earlier on November 24, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak had instructed the team of doctors and paramedical staff to remain ready for 24 hours in the hospital to deal with viral, dengue, chikungunya and other fevers.

He had further instructed that the medicines should be made available to OPD and admitted patients from the hospital itself and the Officers should keep periodically checking the stock in main drug stores, said a government statement.

As per the statement, Deputy Chief Minister Brijesh Pathak directed the CMOs and CMs across the state to provide better treatment to the patients.

“The medicines of the hospital should be provided to the patients. For this, make arrangements for adequate antibiotics and medicines used in the treatment of fever in the hospital. Doctors prescribe the medicines available in the hospital to the patients,” he had said.

The UP Deputy CM also asked the medical teams to lay focus on stocking up of medicines for heart, sugar and blood pressure, so that there is no shortage of medicines in emergencies.

“The medicines for at least 15 days or more should be made available to the patients. So that the patients do not have to visit the hospital frequently. Patients find it inconvenient to come to the hospital in winter. Take special care of the patient’s health in cold,” he said.

He further said that there is no shortage of medicines in government hospitals.

“UP Medical Supplies Corporation is providing medicines to all the hospitals as per their requirement. At the same time, the corporation has been asked to provide a stock of medicines for four to six months according to the requirement of the hospital,” he had said.

The UP Deputy CM also instructed on saving medicines from getting expired.

‘Medicines should have an expiry date of one to two years. So that due to the close expiry, there is a risk of spoilage of medicines. Not only this, the hospitals where the expiry date of medicines is near, they can send medicines to other hospitals to avoid spoilage of medicines,” he had added. (ANI)

Construction, Demolition Banned In Delhi-NCR As AQI Turns Severe

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), a Union government panel recommending steps to control air pollution in the national capital, on Sunday announced a temporary ban on construction and demolition activities in Delhi-NCR as part of its Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).

The announcement came after the air quality in Delhi and the national capital region worsened again, breaching the ‘severe’ category.
The CAQM, which on Sunday chaired a meeting to review the air quality in Delhi-NCR, put out a release saying, “As the AQI in Delhi has slipped into ‘severe’ category, the sub-committee had decided that all actions, as envisaged under Stage III of the GRAP, be implemented in right earnest by all the agencies concerned, with immediate effect in the NCR, in addition to all action under Stage I and Stage II of the GRAP.”

The panel further observed that the air quality saw a further deterioration over the last 24 hours, with Delhi’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) at 407 on December 4, according to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

In its order, the CAQM says it temporarily banned construction activities, “with the exception of Metro Rail services, including stations; airport and inter-state bus terminals; railway services/stations; national security/defence-related activities/ projects of national importance; hospitals/healthcare facilities; linear public projects such as highways, roads, flyovers, overbridges, power transmission, pipelines; sanitation projects like sewage treatment plants and water supply projects; ancillary activities specific to and supplementing above categories of projects”.

Milk and dairy units and those involved in the manufacturing of life-saving medical equipment, drugs and medicines, were also exempted from the restrictions stipulated in the CAQM order.

An AQI between 201 and 300 is considered ‘poor’, 301 and 400 ‘very poor’ and 401 and 500 ‘severe’. (ANI)

MCD Polls: 45% Voter Turnout Recorded Till 4 Pm

The overall polling percentage for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), for all 250 wards, stood at 45 percent (approx) till 4 pm, the State Election Commission informed on Sunday.

In what could be termed a lukewarm response to a high-pitched campaign by the AAP and the BJP for the Delhi civic polls, the overall voter turnout on Sunday was only about 30 percent, a marginal improvement from an even poorer turnout of 18 percent till 12 noon and just 9 percent till 10.30 am.
The polling kicked off at 8 am and will end at 5.30 pm.

The incumbent BJP, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and the Congress and locked in a keen three-cornered contest for the 250 MCD wards this year. The polling process kicked off amid tight security arrangements on a chilly Sunday morning in the national capital.

Seeking to put the AAP on the defensive during the campaign phase, the BJP released several video clips purportedly showing jailed Delhi minister Satyendar Jain receiving privileged treatment behind bars.

While one clip purportedly showed Jain receiving a personalised body massage, another showed the minister purportedly digging into a five-course meal.

While the BJP centered its civic poll campaign around the purported clips, claiming that the Jail minister was receiving privileged treatment behind bars at Tihar jail, the AAP denied the charge saying that Jain was only being administered physiotherapy on medical advice.

Over 1.45 crore people are eligible to cast their votes in the civic polls, the state poll panel had informed earlier, adding that a total of 1,349 candidates, across parties, are in the fray this year.

The state poll panel had further informed that it had set up 13,638 polling stations for civic elections, adding that a sizeable workforce of election functionaries and security agencies had put in a lot of effort in making the necessary poll preparations.

The Commission said it has made elaborate arrangements for “safe, secure and pleasant” voting experience. These measures are required to keep the electoral field free and to ensure that a level playing field is afforded to all political parties and candidates.

Both the AAP and the BJP have exuded confidence that they will emerge victorious in the polls while the Congress is trying to regain lost turf.

The BJP, which has governed the civic body in Delhi since 2007, is looking to maintain its winning streak while the Aam Aadmi Party, which has a majority in the Assembly, is looking to make inroads in the first municipal election in the capital after the delimitation of wards.

This is the first civic election after the fresh delimitation exercise. There were 272 wards in Delhi and three corporations- NDMC, SDMC, and EDMC in Delhi from 2012-2022 that later reunified into an MCD that had formally come into existence on May 22. (ANI)

Delhiites Cast Vote For MCD 2022; Cleanliness, Facilities Among Major Concerns

As the voting for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in the 250 wards of the national capital began on Sunday morning, Delhiites converged to their respective polling booths to cast their vote.

At the polling booth in Matiala village, the first-time voter Sonam said that she has considered issues of roads, women’s safety, and water.

“Roads, women’s safety, and water are the issues I have considered for voting. People should come out and vote. They should understand their responsibility,” Sonam said.

Another first-time voter reiterated a candidate’s promise to resolve the issue of monkey menace in the constituency. He said besides cleanliness, electricity, and water, the monkey menace is another issue we face daily.

The voting for 250 wards began at 8 am and will conclude at 5:30 pm today.

Casting his vote, a seventy-six-year-old man said, “We have come to vote for our peace of mind by resolving important issues such as water, better sewage system, good roads, and cleanliness,” a seventy-six-year-old man said.

Meanwhile, Asha Gupta said that they don’t want freebies but rather want to have basic facilities.

“We want facilities and advancement instead of getting things for free. There should be an advancement in every facility we get be it cleanliness, security, road safety, and water supply,” Asha Gupta said.

“Free-but dirty water is of no use and similarly if you promise to provide free electricity but there are prolonged power cuts, then this too is of no use,” she added.

Harish Bharti, 81, said that their main concern is inflation and unemployment because of which he has voted.

“The cleanliness is also a major issue and concern because of which these votes were a necessity,” he added.

The counting of votes will be done on December 7.

Delhi Air Quality To Improve From Sunday Evening Onwards: IMD Scientist Vijay

The Air Quality in Delhi which has been in the ‘severe’ category for some time is likely to improve bringing respite to Delhiites from Sunday evening, a weather scientist said.

“The air quality in the national capital is in the severe category with an air quality index of around 400, but from today evening onwards, the air quality of the national capital is likely to improve,” India Meteorological Department (IMD) scientist Vijay Soni told ANI.
During a telephonic conversation, Vijay Soni, a scientist at the IMD’s Air Quality Division in New Delhi, said, “Today morning the air quality of Delhi was in the severe category with an Air Quality Index (AQI) around 400.

“The main reason behind this has been with winds remaining calm for the whole day and night on Saturday, which deteriorated air quality significantly.”

“But today (Sunday) we expect that winds will improve and we will see an improvement in the AQI from evening onwards,” he said.

Explaining the two main reasons for air quality to be in a severe category, Soni said, “The main reason is low wind speed and decrease in mixing layer height.

“The mixing layer height has come down significantly close to the surface. So these two factors are really contributing to the deterioration in air quality.”

He explained, “Mixing height is the height up to which air pollutants get mixed up in the atmosphere. The wind is almost calm, but today morning it has started. Right now the wind speed is up to 8 kmph,” Vijay Soni said.

On being asked if it’s normal to have such air quality in the month of December in Delhi, Soni said, “The air quality generally deteriorates in the month of December. In this month generally, we see lower mixing height and low wind speed and hence we experience bad air quality.” (ANI)

450 Voters Deleted As They Support BJP: Manoj Tiwari

The names of 450 voters in Subash Mohalla ward in the national capital have been deleted from the voters’ list because they support BJP, claimed BJP MP Manoj Tiwari on Sunday and demanded cancellation and re-election of the polls in the ward.

“In the Subash Mohalla ward, the names of 450 voters have been deleted from the voters’ list because they support BJP. This is a big conspiracy by the Delhi government. I will complain against this and appeal for cancellation of this polls and re-election,” said Tiwari.

Earlier, Delhi Congress president Anil Chaudhary claimed that he found his name missing from the voters’ list when he arrived at the polling booth to cast his vote for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections.

Chaudhary claimed that his name is neither on the voters’ list nor in the deleted list.

“My name is neither in the voter list nor in the deleted list. My wife has voted. Officials are checking it,” said the Delhi Congress president who arrived at a polling booth in Dallupura to cast his vote.

India Realising Importance Of Women In Sports: Sravya Shivani

At the age of six, young Sravya Shivani Chilakalapudi was introduced to the sport of tennis. But with her education becoming a priority, the Hyderabad athlete had had to wait 10 more years to turn professional. Currently pursuing her Masters in Psychology Hons. from the Jain University, Bangalore, Sravya has become a known name in Indian tennis, having recently won the ITF W15 Women’s Double Tournament along with Celine Simunyu in Nairobi.

Sravya, who is competing in the Pro Tennis League Season 4 at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA) in New Delhi, said that she is thankful to her parents for supporting her sporting career.

“It was very important for me to have the balance of education and sports, especially coming from an Indian family background. But I am thankful to my parents for being quite open-minded. They were able to support me, fund me, and helped in becoming a professional athlete,” the 22-year-old, who is playing for Lucknow Aviators in PTL 4 said.

Despite still being a young player, Sravya is a part of the ITF’s World Women’s Tennis Player Panel representing Asia/Oceania and has been quite vocal about the participation and rights of women’s tennis players in Asia.

“On the women’s tour, there are not enough mentors because it is such a competitive field. We are all so busy that no one really has time. Asia has really little representation on the Women’s panel as it is dominated by Europeans. I wanted to be someone who brings Asia to light, as we are equally talented and deserve equal opportunities,” Sravya said.

She further went on to explain the importance of having a younger athlete as part of the panel. “Sports is a vicious cycle, as you can make money after reaching the top, but you need to invest money to reach the top. A young athlete’s struggles are very different from those of senior ones. Hence, to make our voices heard, it is important for young players to use all the platforms where we can make our voices heard.”

Growing up, Sravya was inspired by women athletes from Hyderabad, such as Sania Nehwal, PV Sindhu, and Sania Mirza, who all have won numerous accolades for India. She believes that because of the efforts of such women heroes in sports, India has started realizing the importance of female athletes in the country.

“Especially, in the recent Olympics, the women’s athletes put up a great show. I think that the world, especially India, is realizing the importance of women in sports and are understanding that they deserve as much as men are getting,” she said.

Apart from 24 Pro Men’s players, 8 Pro Women’s players and 8 Junior Women’s players are also competing in the ongoing Pro Tennis League 4. While Sravya wishes for more participation for women, she believes leagues such as these will help in the growth of young women tennis players in India.

“I would like to see more opportunities for girls as well. We are the best of the best right now. Because with leagues such as these, the junior girls are getting to learn a lot from pro players. There are not many opportunities where junior players get to interact with us or we get to interact with them or with the men’s players as well. So, this format is unique and very helpful and I am grateful to be a part of this,” she said.

On being asked about the future of women’s sports in India in the coming years, Sravya said that the parents are now empowering their girl child to pick up professional sports.

“I feel like being a woman is not a disadvantage. It is a privilege. I see a lot of parents caring a lot about their girl child and empowering them and it’s a very positive direction we are heading in,” she said.

“I would like to see a similar trend continue in the coming years. I would like to see a lot more unity among the women players because I feel, together, we will achieve our goals a lot faster than if we are pitted against each other. I really like that Pro Tennis League is giving players a chance to know each other and develop team spirit, which is not something we experience a lot on tours,” Sravya signed off. (ANI)

Police Patrolling In Daryaganj, Jama Masjid Ahead Of MCD Polls

Delhi Police on Saturday, conducted patrolling in the areas of Daryaganj and Jama Masjid ahead of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections tomorrow.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of Central Delhi, Shweta Chauhan told ANI that out of the 200 polling premises and 700 polling booths, 54 are critically sensitive.

“We conducted foot patrolling to ensure that MCD elections are conducted in a free and fair manner tomorrow. There’re over 200 polling premises and around 700 polling booths of which 54 are critically sensitive, in the Central zone,” she said.

Earlier today, the election officials informed that sixty-eight model polling stations and an equal number of pink polling stations have been designated in New Delhi in view of the MCD elections.

The officials said that the special polling stations aim to provide unique arrangements for women, elderlies, and persons with disabilities, among other people to encourage voters’ participation in the 250-wards MCD polls.

Also, the Delhi government schools have been closed today in view of preparations for the December 4 MCD elections, the Directorate of Education, School Branch informed in an official notification on Friday.

Delhi State Election Commission has set up 13,638 polling stations for the civic body polls in the national capital, slated for Sunday.

Delhi Excise Policy Case: Sisodia Changed His Mobile Phone 4 Times A Day

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday alleged that Manish Sisodia is “completely involved” in the alleged irregularities in the Delhi excise policy case and alleged the Delhi Deputy Chief Minister changed four mobile handsets in one day and 14 handsets in two three months after Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) lodged an FIR against him. The BJP alleged that Sisodia did so with the aim to destroy digital evidence.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters here, the BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra said, “A few days ago, Arvind Kejriwal said that Manish Sisodia has a clean chit. And the scam that has taken place in the excise policy is not a scam because CBI and ED had given clean chit to Manish Sisodia. There is no charge sheet against Sisodia.”
Patra alleged that Sisodia has a big role in Delhi’s excise policy. “He is not just neck deep but he is completely involved in the liquor scam in Delhi,” the BJP leader said.

During the press conference, Patra presented a remand note which he claimed was submitted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to a Delhi court in which Patra said it is stated that an FIR dated August 17, 2022, was registered by CBI against Manish Sisodia

“A person named Amit Arora had taken and given money in the case. Amit Arora was arrested by the ED and while taking its custody the ED presented these documents in Court. The 32-page remand note shows that the investigation is going on against Manish Sisodia in the excise police scam case. The allegations against him are serious. The ED and CBI had charge-sheeted those arrested. They are preparing full-proof documents on Manish Sisodia. They all have a connection with Manish Sisodia.

“As per the document, an FIR dated August 17, 2022, was registered by CBI against Manish Sisodia. The Office Memo (OM) disclosed that Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, the then Excise Commissioner Arava Gopi Krishna and others were instrumental in giving orders to people in excise policy benefiting few by giving them an undue advantage,” said the BJP leader.

He further alleged that Sisodia might have consulted people to destroy digital evidence in the case.

“Manish Sisodia changed four mobile handsets in one day and 14 handsets in two three months after CBI’s FIR against him. He might have consulted Delhi CM Kejriwal, AAP leader Vijay Nair, liquor scam accused Amit Arora and Sunny Marwah to destroy digital evidence,” the BJP national spokesperson said.

Patra alleged “large-scale destruction of digital evidence” was done by the accused including the ex-excise minister of Delhi Sisodia and that 170 mobile phones were destroyed by the 36 accused in the alleged Delhi liquor scam

The Delhi LG had recommended a CBI inquiry into the findings of the Delhi chief secretary’s report filed in July showing prima facie violations of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) Act 1991, Transaction of Business Rules (ToBR)-1993, Delhi Excise Act-2009, and Delhi Excise Rules-2010, officials had said.

In October, the ED had raided nearly three dozen locations in Delhi and Punjab following the arrest of Sameer Mahendru, Managing Director of Delhi’s Jor Bagh-based liquor distributor Indospirit Group, in the case.

The Excise Department had decided to refund the Earnest Money Deposit of about Rs 30 crore to a successful tenderer against the set rules. Even though there was no enabling provision, a waiver on tendered license fees was allowed from December 28, 2021, to January 27, 2022, due to COVID-19.

This allegedly caused a loss of Rs 144.36 crore to the exchequer, which has been instituted on a reference from the Union Home Ministry following a recommendation from Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena. (ANI)
