From Ravanahatha To Rudraveena, Instruments To Be Played At G20 Dinner

The special dinner hosted by President Draupadi Murmu for G20 leaders on Saturday evening will witness a musical performance showcasing ancient classical instruments such ‘Ravanahatha’ and ‘Rudra Veena’ among others.

The ceremonial dinner to be held tonight at the Bharat Mandapam venue of the G20 Leaders Summit in the national capital will celebrate the country’s rich musical heritage – a mix of different styles of classical and contemporary music.

The performance ‘Bharat Vadya Darshanam’ — Musical Journey of India — by the ‘Gaandharva Aaradhyam’ group will be showcased during the dinner hosted by President Murmu.

The 18th G20 Leaders Summit has brought together leaders from the world’s 20 major economies

“The three-hour-long performance at the G20 special dinner during the special dinner will see ancient musical instruments like “Ravanahatha” to “Rudra Veena,” as well as the tabla and piano being played,” Minister of State Meenakashi Lekhi told ANI.

“We have the legacy of Hindustani and Carnatic music Specially abled artists will also perform at the dinner hosted by President Murmu. This would be a very proud moment for all of us,” Lekhi said.

Earlier today Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally welcomed global leaders and heads of State at the venue with handshakes and hugs.

The theme of this year’s G20 Summit, which is taking place under India’s presidency, “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” or “One Earth, One Family, One Future” – is drawn from the ancient Sanskrit text of the Maha Upanishad. Essentially, the theme affirms the value of all life—human, animal, plant, and microorganism—and their interconnectedness on the planet Earth and in the wider universe.

This is the first time that the G20 Summit is being hosted by India.

The countries taking part in the G20 Summit include Nigeria, Argentina, Italy, the AU (represented by Comoros), and South Africa. Bangladesh, the United Kingdom, and Japan Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Egypt, Australia, the United States, Canada, China, UAE, Brazil, Indonesia, and Turkey Spain, Germany, France, Mauritius, the European Union, and Singapore. India’s G20 Presidency Has Become Symbol Of Inclusion: Modi

Noting that India’s G20 Presidency has become a symbol of inclusion both inside and outside the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday that it has become “People’s G20” in India and crores of citizens are connected with it.

In his opening statement at G20 Summit being hosted under India’s presidency, PM Modi spoke of global challenges and said ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas’ can be the torch bearer to address these.

The plaque in front of PM Modi at the G20 Summit said “Bharat”.

“India’s G20 presidency has become a symbol of inclusion, of ‘sabka saath’ both inside and outside the country. This has become People’s G20 in India. Crores of Indians are connected to this. In more than 60 cities of the country, more than 200 meetings have taken place. With the sense of ‘Sabka Saath’, India had proposed that the African Union be granted permanent membership of G20. I believe that all of us agree to this proposal,” he said.

PM Modi also invited the head of the African Union to take his seat as a member of the G20.

The first session of the summit under the theme ‘One Earth’ started at Bharat Mandapam, the venue of the conference.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar accompanied the President of the Union of Comoros and Chairperson of the African Union (AU), Azali Assoumani as he took his seat among world leaders.

“With everyone’s approval, I request the African Union Chairperson to take his seat as a permanent G20 member,” PM Modi said.

African Union’s inclusion in G20 was among India’s key priorities in the G20 summit under its presidency. African Union’s inclusion in G20 grouping was proposed by PM Modi in June this year.

At the beginning of his speech, PM Modi expressed his condolences over the loss of lives due to an earthquake in Morocco.

“Before we start the proceedings of G20, I want to express my condolences over the loss of lives due to an earthquake in Morocco. We pray that all injured recover at the earliest. India is ready to offer all possible assistance to Morocco in this difficult time.”

PM Modi noted that the world has faced a new challenge of trust deficit after the COVID-19. He referred to conflict between Ukraine and Russia and said the war had deepened the trust deficit further.

“If we can defeat a pandemic like COVID, we can also win over the challenge of this trust deficit. Today, as the President of the G20, India calls upon the entire world to transform this global trust deficit into trust and confidence. This is the time for all of us to move together,” he said.

“In this time, the mantra of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas’ can be the torch bearer for us. Be it the divide between North and South, the distance between East and West, management of food and fuel, terrorism, cyber security, health, energy or water security, we will have to move towards a solid solution to this for future generations.”

Ahead of G20 Summit, PM Modi welcomed world leaders, including US President Joe Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, UK PM Rishi Sunak, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

As the leaders arrived, they were greeted by PM Modi in the backdrop of replica of Konark Wheel from Odisha.

The Konark Wheel was built during the 13th century under the reign of King Narasimhadeva-I. The wheel with 24 spokes has been adapted in India’s national flag embodying India’s ancient wisdom, advanced civilisation, and architectural excellence.

The rotating motion of the Konark Wheel, symbolizes time, Kalachakra as well as progress and continuous change. It serves as a powerful symbol of the wheel of democracy that reflects the resilience of democratic ideals, and commitment to progress in society. The theme of this year’s G20 Summit, which is taking place under India’s presidency is “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” or “One Earth, One Family, One Future.”

PM Modi had on Friday expressed confidence that the New Delhi G20 Summit will chart a new path in the human-centric and inclusive development

As the footfall of global leaders begins at the G20 Summit’s venue, Bharat Mandapam in Pragati Maidan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the heads of States with handshakes and hugs.

Japanese PM Fumio Kishida, President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa were seen shaking hands with PM Modi.

President of South Korea Yoon Suk Yeol, President of the European Council Charles Michel, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and many other leaders have reached the G20 venue in the national capital.

India is hosting the G20 Summit, scheduled for today and tomorrow, under its Presidency amid divisions in the grouping over the Russia-Ukraine war.

The summit is being attended by more than 30 heads of state and top officials from the European Union and invited guest countries and 14 heads of international organisations.

The first session of the G20 Summit: ‘One Earth’ will take place now gets underway. This session will focus on accelerating climate action through increased mitigation and strengthening the agenda of global net zero emission as soon as possible.

UAE Prez Nahyan Arrives In Delhi To Attend G20 Summit

The President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, on Friday arrived at Delhi’s Palam airbase to attend the G20 summit.

The two-day summit, being hosted in the national capital under India’s presidency of the 20-member bloc, will get underway at the state-of-the-art Bharat Mandapam from Saturday.

President Al Nahyan was received by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai.

Meanwhile, ahead of the G20 summit, which will bring together some of the most powerful leaders of the free world as well as delegates representing international organisations, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said, “The coming together of the 41 Heads of delegations, Heads of State/Govt, Heads of international organisations in India, starting yesterday is under PM’s personal leadership and direction. It is essentially a celebration of the coming together of the G 20 family…This is the largest-ever participation of the Global South in India.”

India assumed the G20 presidency on December 1, last year, with about 200 related meetings organised across 60 Indian cities.

The 18th G20 Summit will be a culmination of all the G20 processes and meetings held throughout the year among ministers, senior officials, and civil societies.

One of the takeaways of India’s G20 presidency is the revolutionisation of Digital Payment Infrastructure, as initially very few people knew about it, but it has taken forward extensively, G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said on Friday.

After concluding his recent official visit to the UAE, PM Modi shared a video clip of his trip to the Gulf nation saying both countries will continue to work closely for the global good.

Sharing the video on Twitter, which showed him attending important events in the UAE, PM Modi posted, “India and UAE will keep working closely to further global good!”

During the visit, PM Modi and UAE President Al Nahyan affirmed that India’s G20 presidency will play an important role in accelerating cooperation in combating climate change, said the India-UAE joint statement on Climate Change.

PM Modi and the UAE President recognized the urgent need to address the global challenge of climate change through global collective action while respecting the foundational principles and obligations under the United Nations Framework Convention on the Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement, read a joint press release.

PM Modi also congratulated UAE on being chosen as the host country for COP28 in 2023 while pledging the country’s full support to the Gulf nation as it assumes the COP28 Presidency. President Al Nahyan, in turn, congratulated India on its leadership role in the G20.

Both leaders affirmed the importance and significance of India’s G20 presidency while stressing the grouping’s role in fostering and accelerating cooperation in combating climate change, with emphasis on finance and technology as critical enablers, as well as on just, inclusive and sustainable energy transitions, the joint statement said.

The leaders committed to enhancing cooperation on climate ambition, decarbonization, and clean energy, and work together to have tangible and meaningful outcomes from the 28th Session of the UNFCCC Conference of Parties. (ANI)

G20 Summit: L-G To Keep Tab On Security From Raj Niwas

As elaborate motorcades of world leaders on Friday rolled out of the Palam airbase in the national capital towards the designated hotels, ahead of the G20 Summit, the office of Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena informed through a release that he will keep a close tab of the security situation in the city from the Raj Niwas.

The city has been turned into a veritable fortress ahead of the big-ticket summit, which will see world leaders hold deliberations on global economic challenges.

The 18th G20 summit is to be hosted at the state-of-the-art Bharat Mandapam on September 9 and 10.

“He (L-G) will be in constant touch with the Command Room of the state-to-art Control Room of the Delhi Police Headquarters on September 9,” read the statement from Raj Niwas.

“He will remain in touch with the Police Commissioner and will keep an eye on every road and hotel detailed for G-20 requirements, apart from taking livestock of the development in the City, through the hi-tech gadgets installed at the Control Room,” it added.

Officials at the Raj Niwas informed further that the L-G, on a visit to the Control Room recently, held a detailed discussion with the Delhi Police Commissioner on the deployment of armed forces personnel and high-tech security measures adopted to keep a hawk-eye over the city.

The L-G was informed that live visuals would be captured by more than 5,000 CCTVs installed in different parts of the city, the Raj Niwas informed through a press note.

“Two teams comprising 25 security personnel will be monitoring in different shifts, the digital information being beamed into the Control Room, around the clock. The Control Room is getting district-wise visuals and a special Command Room has been set up for 30 senior police officials to monitor the minutest of developments in the City and its roads” the press note stated further.

It added that besides normal-sized monitors, 2 giant screens, in which the images can be magnified, have been also installed in the Control Room.

“The Command Room which has the capacity of making arrangements for the sitting of 30 senior officers has been designed in such a way that those working in the Control Room are visible to them,” the LG office added in the press note.

The Control Room is manned by technical experts to ensure that everything goes off without any glitches, the L-G Office stated, adding that the police commissioner apprised Saxena that information is being received from each district round the clock and there has been a full deployment of the police personnel across the city.

The press note stated that Saxena also took stock of security arrangements at public spaces to be visited by the G20 leaders and delegates.

“Besides the VVIP areas, high-resolution CCTVs have also been installed in sensitive parts of the city which in the past have been the nerve centre of mischief,” the L-G office added.

The G20 summit will witness participation by over 30 heads of state and top officials from the European Union, as well as guest countries and 14 heads of international organisations.

India assumed the G20 presidency in December 2022 and will pass the mantle to Brazil at the end of its term in November this year.

The next G20 Summit will be hosted by Brazil where India will formally hand over the presidency of the bloc to the host country.

Prior to the G20 leaders’ summit, about 200 meetings were organised across 60 cities.

Moon Mission, G20, Cricket WC…Great Year For India: Sunak

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Friday said 2023 is shaping up to be a great year for India, with the Moon mission, G20 and the cricket World Cup.

“In India, just this year, the moon mission, what an extraordinary success, this G20, which is going to be a huge success and, of course, the Cricket World Cup to come as well. So this is shaping up to be a great year for India,” the British Prime Minister said.

Sunak added that this demonstrates India’s place on the global stage and its importance to geopolitics. “I know everyone here will be incredibly proud of the year that India is having,” he said.

Meanwhile, on his arrival in India on Friday, the UK PM met students and staff at the British Council in Delhi.

Sunak said India’s youth represent its future and India’s trajectory over the coming years and decades inspires confidence.

“The schoolchildren I spent time with today, with Akshata, are so bright, so confident. They are going to ensure that India has an incredibly important role to play in world affairs for years to come. Because their energy, their confidence, their intelligence is fantastic. And it’s an inspiration to see,” the British PM said.

Taking to his official handle on X, Sunak posted, “Before meeting the world leaders of today I’ve been meeting with the world leaders of tomorrow. It’s been fantastic to visit students and staff here at @inBritish- a reflection of the living bridge that exists between the UK and India.”

He further called the little ones “a living bridge between the UK and India”.

Rishi Sunak arrived for his maiden India visit on Friday to attend the G20 Summit scheduled to be held in New Delhi on September 9 and 10. He was received by Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Ashwini Choubey.

On his arrival at the national capital, the British PM said the G20 has been a huge success for India and it is the “right country at the right time to be hosting this”.

The UK PM said that he will make sure that the G20, under India’s presidency, achieves success.

“G20 has been a huge success for India. India is the right country at the right time to be hosting this.I feel we are going to have a very good couple of days of deliberations and decisions made,” the British Prime Minister said, adding that the coming two days will witness hectic deliberations.

Referring to the theme of the 18th G20 Summit, ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’, UK PM said, “I think it’s a great theme. I am an example of the incredible living bridge that Prime Minister Modi described between UK and India.”

Digital Payment Infrastructure, One Of Key Takeaways At India’s G20: Sherpa Kant

One of the key takeaways of India’s G20 presidency is the revolutionization of Digital Payment Infrastructure, as initially very few people knew about it, but it has been taken forward extensively, G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said on Friday.

He further said that the digital payment infrastructure has been widely accepted as a way to bring financial inclusion.

Addressing the pre-summit briefing, Kant said, “When India started the G20 Presidency, very few people knew about Digital Payment Infrastructure and the open source model of it. This has been extensively taken forward, by both the Finance track and Sherpa track in a very rigorous manner. Digital Payment Infrastructure, has broadly been accepted as…the way to bring financial inclusion. This is the way to do fast payments, this is the way to drive the innovation of the future”.

“One of the key takeaways of India’s presidency is that it has completely revolutionalised digital payment infrastructure, which is a unique model. Its definition, its framework and how we take it forward, all of this has come into discussion in India’s G20 presidency,” he added.

He also said that the New Delhi leaders’ declaration at the end of the G20 Summit will reflect the voice of the Global South.

“The New Delhi leaders’ declaration that you will see post the Summit, you will see it as a Voice of Global South and the developing countries. No document in the world would have such a strong voice for the Global South and the developing countries,” he stated.

During the briefing, Ajay Seth, Secretary, of the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India’s G20 presidency has focussed on issues that can make a difference in people’s lives.

“Under the leadership of our PM, the focus and the vision of India G 20 presidency is to bring focus to the global discourse issues which could make a difference to people’s lives,” he stated.

India is geared up to host the G20 Leader’s Summit in the national capital at the newly inaugurated Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan.

Glad To See You In Delhi: Modi Welcomes EU Prez Leyen

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday extended a welcome to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on her arrival at the national capital for the G20 Summit.

The EU president will be among the sizeable complement of world leaders and delegates attending the big-ticket summit, which will get underway at the state-of-the-art Bharat Mandapam in the national capital on Saturday.

Responding to a post by the EU President on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi wrote, “Glad to see you in Delhi for the G20 Summit, @vonderleyen. Grateful for the @EU_commission’s support and commitment. Collectively, we shall address the pressing challenges we face. Looking forward to fruitful deliberations and collaborative actions.”

The EU chief touched down in the national capital on Thursday evening and was received by the Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Anupriya Patel.

India and the EU have a common interest in ensuring security, prosperity and sustainable development in a multi-polar world. Both India and the EU agreed to further build on these convergences and foster new synergies for jointly contributing to a safer, greener, cleaner, more digital, resilient and stable world, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement.

The EU is India’s second-largest trading partner (after the US) and India’s second-largest export market. India is the EU’s 10th largest trading partner, accounting for 2 per cent of EU total trade in goods. Trade in services between the EU and India reached 40 billion euros in 2021.

For the summit, which is being hosted under India’s presidency of the G20, extensive preparations and arrangements have been made not only to showcase the country’s soft power but also its emergence as a prominent global player.

Formed in 1999, the G20 was formed to maintain global financial stability by incorporating middle-income countries.

‘One Earth One Family One Future’ A Perfect Theme For G20: Mauritius PM

Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth hailed India’s G20 Presidency and said that there couldn’t have been a better them for the summit than ‘One Earth, One Family and One Future’, which translates to ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’.

He also thanked India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for inviting Mauritius as a Guest Country at the G20 Summit and affirmed contributing at the summit.

In an exclusive interview to ANI, Jugnauth said, “I must thank the government of India, particularly Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for having invited Mauritius as a Guest Country to attend this G20 Summit. Mauritius is very honoured and privileged to be participating. We have contributed throughout the year and we are going to contribute to this Summit. This is being held at a very critical juncture because we have been facing the COVID-19 pandemic. We were at a situation when the whole world was at its knees. On top of that, it is being compounded now with this conflict in Ukraine. We also see the effects of climate change”.

“So, it is important for a summit like this one all the countries to sit down and see how we can bounce back. I think there is a need for us to be resilient, there is a need to review our policies in view of the lessons that we can draw from those events,” he added.

He further said that amid the ongoing conflicts in Africa and Ukraine, and issues like climate change, the issues being put up by India under its presidency are very pertinent.

“I think there could not have been a better theme that has been chosen by India – One Earth, One Family and One Future – which is drawn from the Sanskrit phase of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’. I think this is pertinent more so when we look at the effect of climate change because what one country does, not only affects that country but also the whole world. That is why, we have to reflect collectively and we have to act collectively,” the Prime Minister said.

He added, “Each one of us has a duty to save the planet and save the whole population. I am happy to see that India has taken this very inclusive approach and to try to get everybody on board. There have been a number of meetings before the summit, and there have been a lot of proposals and ideas that have been edited. I am very confident that we are going to make progress”.

Earlier in the day, Mauritius PM Jugnauth arrived at the New Delhi Airport on Thursday for the G20 Summit, which will be held here in the national capital from September 9-10. He was received at the Airport by Shripad Naik Union Minister of State for Ports, and Shipping. (ANI)

Xi’s Absence Is Going To Be His Loss: Pankaj Saran

Former Deputy NSA and Ambassador Pankaj Saran said that the absence of China’s President from the G20 Summit, which is being held under India’s presidency in New Delhi, is “Xi Jinping’s loss”.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will not be attending the G20 Summit rather the delegation will be led by the country’s Premier Li Qiang, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced.

“So far as the Chinese case is concerned, the President should have come. I think his absence is going to be his loss, but he is sending his prime minister. So we will see,” he said.

Notably, the G20, which represents 80 per cent of the world’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product), 75 per cent of global trade and 2/3rd of the global population, is one of the most influential forum for global governance

“We hope that China will participate as an equal, constructive and positive participant of G20 because China’s role in the global economy is important,” he added.

Earlier this week, Quoting foreign ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China statement read, “At the invitation of the government of the Republic of India, Premier of the State Council Li Qiang will attend the 18th G20 Summit to be held in New Delhi, India, on September 9 and 10.”

However, no reason was given in the statement about Xi’s absence from the summit.

Former Deputy NSA Saran further stressed that apart from the countries’ leaders who are not coming for G20, India should also note the presence of other countries like Mauritius, Bangladesh and a few other nations.

“I don’t think we should read too much into the attendance, because on the one hand, you have some people not coming, but on the other hand, you have a lot of other invitees who are coming, the guests of the Indian presidency, such as Mauritius, Bangladesh and a few other countries. So it’s a balance,” he added.

Moreover, he said that since the beginning, the Indian presidency has also said ‘One World, One Earth, One Future’, or ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, highlighting that India wants to reduce global tensions.

“We want to bring everyone together because the world today is badly fractured. It is a tense world. The current international order is under strain, very severe strain. The global economic outlook is not good. So there are so many challenges. If this presidency and this summit can help to contribute to improving the overall atmosphere then we have done our job,” he said.

Earlier noting that Chinese President Xi Jinping’s absence will not cast a shadow on the G20 Summit, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said there have been presidents or Prime Ministers who for some reason have chosen not to come for global meetings and that country’s position is reflected by the representative present on the occasion.

“I do not think it has anything to do with India. I. I think whatever decision they make, they would know best,” Jaishankar said.

In August, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Xi on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit during which he highlighted India’s concerns over the unresolved issues along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), in Ladakh.

The two leaders agreed to direct their relevant officials “to intensify efforts at expeditious disengagement and de-escalation”. (ANI)
