Tomato Prices To Come Down With Arrival Of New Crop From M’rashtra

The prices of tomato is expected to come down with the increase in arrival of new crop from Nasik, Naryangoan and Aurangabad belt in Maharashtra and also from Madhya Pradesh, Centre told the Rajya Sabha on Friday.

Minster of State Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Ashwini Kumar Choubey made the statement in a written reply to the query of a Rajya Sabha member.
The Minister further said the Department of Consumer Affairs monitors the daily prices of 22 essential food commodities including tomato.

In order to check the current increase in prices of tomato and make it available to the consumers at affordable prices, the Minister said, the government has started the procurement of tomatoes under Price Stabilisation Fund and is making it available at a highly subsidised rate to consumers.

Choube said the National Cooperative Consumers Federation (NCCF) and National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) are continuously procuring tomato from mandis in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra and making it available at affordable prices in major consuming centres in Delhi-NCR, Bihar and Rajasthan after subsidizing the price to the consumers.

“The tomatoes have been disposed initially at retail price of Rs 90 per kg which has been reduced to Rs 80 per kg from July 16 and further reduced to Rs 70 per kg from July 20,” said the Minister while responding to the query of Kartikeya Sharma, who asked about the measures taken by the government to monitor and regulate tomato prices to ensure affordability for consumers.

“Current increase in tomato prices may incentivize farmers to grow more tomato crop

which is expected to stabilize the prices in coming months.”

The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (DAFW) implements Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) to protect the growers of perishable agri-horticultural commodities from making distress sale in the event of a bumper crop during the peak arrival period when the prices tend to fall below economic levels and cost of production, said the Minister.

“Under the scheme, the loss on account of the fall in price is borne between the Central Government and State Government on 50:50 basis. Since the inception of MIS till date, the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has not received any proposal from State Governments for market intervention to address distress sale of tomato,” Choube said.

Ministry of Food Processing Industries implements Operation Greens for enhancing value addition and reduction in post-harvest losses of agri-horticultural commodities, including tomato, said the Minister, adding “the objectives of the scheme are enhancing value realization of produce for farmers; protect the growers from making distress sale; increase in food processing/preservation capacities and value addition; and (iv) reduction in post-harvest losses.”

He said the scheme has both short-term interventions component and long-term interventions component.

“The short-term interventions include transportation and storage subsidy to individual farmers, group of farmers, farmer producer organisations, farmer producer companies, cooperative societies, State Marketing and Co-operative Federation, food processors, licensed commission agents, exporters and retailers. Under the long term interventions, grants-in-aid are being provided for Integrated Value Chain Development Projects and Stand-alone Post Harvest Infrastructure Projects,” added the Minister. (ANI)

Freshly Procured Tomatoes Arrive In Delhi, To Be Sold At Rs 90/kg Starting Today

Freshly procured tomatoes, which arrived in the national capital overnight, are to be sold in the retail markets here by the government agency National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India (NCCF), starting today.

The kitchen staple will be sold at Rs 90 per kg, the consumer affairs department said.

Amid a sharp spurt in tomato prices across the country, the Central government on Wednesday directed its agricultural marketing agencies — NAFED and NCCF — to immediately procure the staple vegetable from mandis in key growing states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra.

The sharp rise in tomato prices has been reported across the country, and is not just limited to a particular region or geography. In key cities, it rose to as high as Rs 150-160 per kg.

Once procured, these freshly procured tomatoes are to be despatched for simultaneous distribution in major consumption centres where retail prices have recorded maximum increase in the past one month.

The periods during July-August and October-November are generally the lean production months for tomato.

The stocks of tomato will be distributed through retail outlets at “discounted prices” to the consumers in Delhi NCR region by Friday, this week, an official release said Wednesday.

Tomato is produced almost in all the states in India, though in varying quantities. The southern and western regions of India accounts for 56-58 per cent of total tomato production in the country.

“Southern and Western regions being surplus states, feed to other markets depending on production seasons. The production seasons are also different across regions. The peak harvesting season occurs from December to February,” the food ministry had said.

“The cycle of planting and harvesting seasons and variation across regions are primarily responsible for price seasonality in Tomato. Apart from the normal price seasonality, temporary supply chain disruptions and crop damage due to adverse weather conditions etc. often lead to sudden spikes in prices,” it added.

The government attributed the rise in prices to the monsoon season, saying that it added to further challenges related to distribution and increased transit losses.

Tomatoes have a relatively lower shelf life.

Currently, the supplies coming to markets in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and some other states are mostly from Maharashtra especially Satara, Narayangaon, and Nashik, which is expected to last till this month end.

Madanapalle (Chittoor) in Andhra Pradesh also has seen continued arrivals in reasonable quantities. The arrivals in Delhi NCR are mainly from Himachal Pradesh and some quantity comes from Kolar in Karnataka.

New crop arrivals are expected soon from Nashik district.

Further, in August, additional supply is expected to come from Narayangaon and Aurangabad belt. Madhya Pradesh arrivals are also expected to start, the government said.

According to the database maintained by the Price Monitoring Division under the Department of Consumer Affairs, per kilogram tomato on average rose by Rs 60-100 this month of what they were in retail markets in early June.

Data showed prices of tomatoes in Delhi going up exponentially from Rs 20 per kg in early June to Rs 110 last week. Similarly, in Chennai, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata, three key consuming regions, the prices per kilogram rose to Rs 117, Rs 100, and Rs 148.

Data showed the rates of the staple vegetable tomato were in tune with the rise in their prices in wholesale markets, which jumped substantially on average in June.

The rise in tomato and other vegetable prices was reflected in the June retail inflation data.

Bucking the trend, retail inflation in India rose considerably in June to 4.81 per cent, largely due to a sharp spurt in vegetable prices. Vegetables, meat and fish; eggs; pulses and products; spices indices saw an uptick.

Back in May, the retail inflation (final) was at 4.31 per cent, hitting a two-year low. It was at 4.7 per cent in April and 5.7 per cent the previous month. (ANI)

Supriya Seeks Disqualification Of Patel, Tatkare For Anti-Party Activities

Nationalist Congress Party working President Supriya Sule on Monday wrote to Party Supremo Sharad Pawar to disqualify MP and Party Members Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare for allegedly indulging in anti-party activities.

“I write with great urgency to inform you that two Members of Parliament, Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare…have indulged in anti-party activities by facilitating and spearheading the swearing of the oath of nine MLAs as Cabinet Ministers of Government of Maharashtra,” Supriya Sule wrote to Sharad Pawar.
“They have further openly made statements to this effect before the media and have acted in complete violation of the Party’s direction and principles. You may further be informed that this decision of the two Members of Parliament to support the nine MLAs has been taken without the permission of the Party President and without taking all members of the party into confidence,” she wrote further.

Sule requested NCP President Sharad Pawar to take immediate steps against them including filing of disqualification petitions.

“I therefore request you to take immediate steps against them including filing of disqualification petitions,” she demanded in the letter to NCP President Sharad Pawar

She also took to Twitter and wrote, “Sunil Tatkare and Praful Patel on 2nd July 2023 acted in direct contravention of the Party Constitution and Rules, amounting to desertion and disqualification from the party membership. I request Hon. @PawarSpeaks Saheb to take immediate action and file disqualification petitions under the 10th Schedule of the Constitution of India before the Competent Authority against Members of Parliament- Mr. Praful Patel and Mr. Sunil Tatkare for engaging in anti-party activities.”

The Nationalist Congress Party experienced an internal division as senior leader Ajit Pawar joined the BJP-led Eknath Shinde government.

Ajit Pawar took oath as Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister with eight other party legislators also joining the National Democratic Alliance government in the State.

On Sunday Ajit Pawar claimed that all MLAs are with him and they have joined the Shiv Sena-BJP government as a party.

“We have all the numbers. All MLAs are with me. We are here as a party. We have informed all seniors also. The majority is given importance in a democracy. Our party is 24 years old and young leadership should come forward,” Ajit Pawar said after taking oath as Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra. (ANI)

Fadnavis on Anti muslim

Our Hindutva Is Not Anti-Muslim: Fadnavis

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the ruling Shiv Sena-BJP coalition’s ideology of Hindutva is not anti-Muslim or against any community, but its ideology is anti-appeasement. He slammed Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray for indulging in appeasement politics after severing ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In an interview with ANI Editor Smita Prakash on June 29 before the split in Nationalist Congress Party, Fadnavis said, “What is Hindutva for us? Our Hindutva is not anti-Muslim or anti-any community. Our Hindutva is anti-appeasement. Don’t appease anyone. Let all be one and minorities have the right to education and occupation. Bring a system for them but don’t do vote bank politics.”
He said, “We have already divided our society on the basis of appeasement politics. When we bow in front of illegitimate demands, the country is divided. Uddhav adopted this appeasement politics. How did he go? He removed Hindu from Hindu Hridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra. This is the first time in the history of Shiv Sena a calendar was published in Urdu and ‘Janab Balasaheb Thackeray’ was written on it.”

He said, “Publishing a calendar in Urdu is not a small thing. Whoever has seen Shiv Sena and whoever knows about it, it’s a big thing for that person. It’s like transformation. This is a transformation for votes.”

“If we see Uddhav’s move as maturity or secularism, then why don’t they do some work? Why can’t they make a plan? Did they make any plans? Did they come up with a plan for the education of Muslims? They didn’t. What did they do, they made a policy of appeasement,” he said.

He added, “When the Prime Minister talked about Uniform Civil Code, the Muslim personal law board didn’t go to Akhilesh Yadav, Lalu Prasad Yadav, or Mamata, they came to meet Uddhav because they see a new pseudo-secular outfit in Uddhav.”

On being asked about Uddhav Thackeray taking part in electoral politics unlike Balasaheb Thackeray, he said, “You are absolutely right. I want to thank you for bringing this up. Today, in Maharashtra or Mumbai, we used to be an alliance. We used to get the non-Marathi vote and the Marathi vote. They (Uddhav) used to get a non-Marathi vote due to BJP. Marathi votes were already with them. They used to get an advantage. After breaking the alliance with BJP, he is not popular in the non-Marathi vote.”

He said, “Marathi vote is already with BJP. Because the Marathi vote is also the Hindutva vote. It came to their notice that there is a deficit. How will they fill this deficit? They understood that they can fill this deficit with minority votes. Now the issue is how will they get minority votes. They know they can get it through appeasement politics. Without appeasement politics, the minority vote will not shift towards them. That is why he started this appeasement politics. It is purely political and electoral.”

In 2019, the BJP, which emerged as the single largest party in Maharashtra assembly election, could not stake claim to form a government as its ally Shiv Sena remained firm on rotating the Chief Minister’s post and equal sharing of Cabinet berths.

Shiv Sena parted its ways with BJP to explore ways to form a government. The discussions between Shiv Sena, NCP and INC ended with the formation of a new alliance, Maha Vikas Aghadi. A consensus was finally achieved with Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray appointed Chief Minister after protracted negotiations.

Shinde on MLAs

Shinde Will Be Replaced Soon; 16 MLAs Will Be Disqualified: Raut

Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Monday reiterated his claim that Nationalist Congress Party leader Ajit Pawar who was sworn in as the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra a day ago would soon replace Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Raut also said that 16 MLAs who were part of the split in Shiv Sena almost a year ago are going to be “disqualified”.
“Today I am saying this in front of the camera, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra is going to change. Eknath Shinde is being removed. Eknath Shinde and the 16 MLAs are going to be disqualified,” Raut said while talking to ANI.

Raut’s remark came after NCP leader Ajit Pawar joined the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance in Maharashtra and took oath as Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister on Sunday.

Raut further said that Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress will fight “unitedly” in Maharashtra.

“BJP is breaking Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress but this will not benefit them at all. In Maharashtra, we will fight unitedly. It is shocking that PM Modi had said that the leaders of NCP are involved in corruption and now those leaders have taken oath in Raj Bhawan,” Raut said.

In June 2022, a group of Shiv Sena MLAs led by Eknath Shinde rebelled against Uddhav Thackeray – saying that the latter’s decision to align with the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party went against the party’s Hindutva ideology.

Shinde, then cabinet minister in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, led the revolt which vertically split the Shiv Sena.

The downfall of MVA paved the formation of BJP-Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena. On June 30, Shinde was sworn in as CM and Fadnavis, his deputy.

On Sunday too after the oath-taking ceremony of Ajit Pawar, who became the second Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra along with the present deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis after joining the NDA government, Raut had said that in just a few days, Maharashtra will get another Chief Minister.

“We already knew that this process was going on. About this, I had said earlier also that it can happen. The sword of disqualification that was hanging over Eknath Shinde is about to fall soon. The 16 MLAs who went with him will be disqualified. In just a few days, Maharashtra will get another Chief Minister,” Raut had said. (ANI)
