Make in India

China Could Help Make the ‘Make in India’ Dream Come True

China could help the ‘Make in India’ dream come true

It is easy to slam the Indian government’s policies and initiatives, particularly those related to the economy and development. The Modi government’s “Make in India” initiative is one that has been the target of several brickbats. Make in India was launched by the Indian government in September 2014, barely four months after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power and Narendra Modi took over as Prime Minister, and it was among the earliest of the major economic policies announced by his government.

Make in India aims at encouraging companies to manufacture their products in India. The initiative is based on four pillars that have been identified to give a boost to entrepreneurship in India, not only in manufacturing but also other sectors: new processes, new infrastructure, new sectors, and a new mindset. The idea was to offer India as a base for manufacturing to both, foreign and domestic enterprises, by simplifying procedures, incentivising investments, and easing regulations.

To be fair, the Make in India model has been successful in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI). If you exclude the extraordinary circumstances during the pandemic period, FDI inflow has increased by 23% post-Covid (during March 2020 to March 2022 it was reported at $171.84 billion) in comparison to FDI inflow reported pre-Covid (during February, 2018 to February, 2020 it was $141.10 billion).

Yet, it doesn’t take Indian manufacturing to anywhere near the world’s largest factory, In 2022 alone, FDI flows to China reached around $189.1 billion. There is, however, a silver lining for India in what is happening in China.

China is still the world’s largest manufacturer of a wide range of products, both consumer as well as industrial. Its surge to the top began in 2001 when its economy opened up and it joined the World Trade Organisation and multinationals made a beeline to invest in the country. But of late, things are changing and companies are looking at alternative bases for their manufacture. First, as China’s economy grows, labour costs have been rising. Second, there has been pressure from the Chinese government, which controls and regulates almost everything in the economy, to seek technology transfers to Chinese companies so that they could compete with Western MNCs. Third, there have been consequences of the Trump regime’s sanctions against China and the Covid-related lockdowns in the country. And, fourth, there has been significant decline in China’s relations with the West.

Now, Western foreign direct investors are trying to find alternative bases for their manufacturing activities. And, among other destinations such as Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Mexico, India is also increasingly finding favour.

Apple, the maker of the iconic iPhone, recently announced that it would significantly increase its production in India, including manufacture of its latest models. Other companies are intending to do the same.

There are still hurdles to cross. In comparison to China, India’s global supply chain linkages are still underdeveloped; infrastructure is still hobbled with bottlenecks: and regulations, although simplified, can still be overwhelming for investors.

By all indications, though, the Indian government is working on these. Investments in new ports and airports, railroads, and power generation are underway and efforts are on to simplify the red tape hurdles that investors often encounter.

Apple could also herald a change for the better. Foreign investors often display lemming-like behaviour. So, if Apple expands its manufacturing base in India, it could set an example for others to follow. At least the Indian government hopes that it would.

Congress dashes BJP’s southern dreams

The Congress party, which has had a poor track record of winning state elections in nearly a decade, roughly after the BJP came to power in 2014, pulled off a victory in the southern state of Karnataka, unseating the incumbent BJP-led government and securing an overwhelming majority.

Before winning Karnataka, the Congress ruled in only three– Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan—out of India’s 28 states. Now Karnataka adds to that tally.

While the Congress has called its victory a triumph over the “divisive politics” of the BJP, its win has several implications.

First, the BJP’s hopes of making an inroad into the southern states where its influence and sway is marginal have now suffered a setback. Second, the Congress’ victory could signal that it could still pose a challenge for the BJP in the coming parliamentary elections scheduled for 2024. Third, it implies that the Modi magic may be wearing thin—the BJP campaigned in Karnataka mainly by peddling Modi’s persona and image (he himself addressed nine rallies in the state). And fourth, it shows that money, power, and organisational strength, all attributes in which the BJP tops the Congress, may not be enough when it comes to winning the favour of the electorate.

Shinde (and confusion) continue in Maharashtra

If you are a bit confused about what’s going on in Maharashtra, I can assure you that you will stay confused after reading the following paragraphs.

After a split in 2022 created two factions of the Shiv Sena party in Maharashtra, a crisis followed when the Election Commission awarded the use of the title Shiv Sena and its recognisable election symbol of the bow and arrow to the faction led by the party’s rebel leader and current Maharashtra chief minister, Eknath Shinde, who had assumed office after Uddhav Thackeray, the son of the founder of the party, the late Bal Thackeray, had resigned. The controversy was about whether the state’s governor should have invited the BJP (in alliance with the Shinde faction) to form a government.

This was contested and last week the Supreme Court ruled that it could not order the restoration of the Thackeray government after he had resigned as chief minister of the state because he had done so without facing a floor test. The court, however, strongly criticised the then Maharashtra governor, Bhagat Singh Koshyari, for deciding to help the Shinde faction and in concluding that Thackeray had lost the support of the majority of his party’s MPs.

So, Shinde, who became chief minister because the governor had erred, remains chief minister: Thackeray gets some sort of moral win (although nothing material that would change things for him and his faction), and the status quo continues.

As promised, surely you are still as confused as you were before reading this item.

The mess in Pakistan gets messier

Pakistan’s former prime minister, the celebrity cricketer-turned-politician, Imran Khan, 70, was arrested last week on corruption charges. The allegations were that he had benefited from receiving land as a bribe for political favours when he was prime minister during 2018-2022 and that he had also illegally sold official gifts that he had received when he travelled abroad on official trips. Then, after a couple of days, on an appeal to the courts, he was released on bail. The charges still stand although he cannot be rearrested on the same charges for two weeks, according to the bail order.

Meanwhile, as political crisis grows in Pakistan, the country hurtling into severe economic crises. Economic growth has been sputtering, and inflation has soared. Excessive external borrowings by the country over the years has raised the spectre of default, causing the currency to fall and making imports more expensive in relative terms.

million over the past year. There are fears that Pakistan could default on debt.

Mass shootings in the US: please do the math

Gun rights in the United States refer to the legal protections and privileges afforded to individuals regarding the possession, use, and ownership of firearms. These rights are primarily derived from the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution, which states: “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

A judicial interpretation of that right that prevails states that “is that the Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to possess firearms for self-defence within their home”.

What it means is that in the US, which considers itself as one of the most developed and forward-looking nation (disclaimer: it is their view, not mine), it is easier for an individual to get guns and keep them than it is in most other places in the world.

Now for some statistics: In the less than five months of 2023 that have elapsed, there have been 185 incidents of mass shootings in which 254 people have been killed, and 708 injured. Most of these have been unprovoked attacks aimed at innocent humans.

Please do the math: in less than 140 days, there have been 185 shootings and more than 250 innocent people have been killed. You won’t be at fault if you think the American Dream is really a nightmare.

Cong Is Talking Of Separating K’taka From India: Modi

Levelling fresh allegations against the Congress party, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday accused the party of demanding the “separation” of Karnataka from the country.

The Prime Minister was addressing his last election rally during the Karnataka campaign.
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi said, “When it comes to working against the interests of India, the royal family of the Congress party is at the forefront. They openly incite foreign powers to influence the politics in India”.

“In this election, Congress has said that they want to protect the sovereignty of Karnataka. It means that Congress is advocating for Karnataka’s separation from India. The disease of the ‘Tukde Tukde’ gang will reach this high in Congress, I had never thought,” he added.

He further accused the Congress party of “insulting” the Kannada freedom fighters who participated in India’s freedom struggle.

“Congress has a history of dividing brothers, making states fight among themselves, and leaving no stone unturned in inciting communal violence. Whenever Congress party comes to power, the confidence of terrorists and criminals get emboldened. They are assured of being protected by the Congress party. We have seen how Congress has repeatedly come in support of terrorists,” he said.

The Prime Minister also slammed the Congress party for “abusing” the OBC and Lingayat community.

“All they can see is Vote Bank politics. What they did with Bajrang Bali, that is also a result of appeasement. We all know what they did with Ram Temple. When we promote the pilgrimages of Kashi Vishwanath, Kedarnath and Ujjain Mahakal Mahalok, Congress feels displeasured,” he said.

PM Modi added, “India has been a world power in terms of spices since ancient times. But, under Congress we were even losing the identity of our turmeric. BJP has promoted our spices across the world, and now demand is again increasing”.

The Prime Minister further said that there is “no corner” in the state of Karnataka, where BJP’s “prosperous development” is not visible.

“When India’s defence sector started strengthening, then Asia’s biggest helicopter factory came in Karnataka. When India became the third biggest ecosystem in the world, Karnataka became the startup capital. When railways progressed in the country, then its development also picked pace in Karnataka,” he said.

He further added that for Karnataka, the election is about creating a new history and making Karnataka the number 1 state in the country.

“For Karnataka, this election is about creating a new history. This election is about making Karnataka the number one state in the country. And, I am happy that the people of the state have reposed faith in BJP’s double-engine government,” the Prime Minister said.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi also addressed a rally in Shivamogga, during the last phase of the campaigning for the assembly elections in Karnataka.

Karnataka will go to polls on May 10 and the votes will be counted on May 13. (ANI)

Rahul Gandhi With Delivery

Rahul Rides Pillion With Delivery Boy To Reach Bengaluru Hotel

Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his mega roadshow in Bengaluru on Sunday, standing on a vehicle bedecked with flowers, with huge crowds lining the streets and showering him with petals, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi rode pillion on a delivery boy’s scooter to reach his hotel.

Rahul, who is scheduled to hold public meetings in the state capital ahead of May 10 Karnataka Assembly polls, rode pillion on the delivery boy’s scooter for almost 2 kms.
With just four days left for the Assembly polls, all contesting parties are going through the last legs of their campaign, pulling out all stops to woo voters.

Meanwhile, PM Modi on Sunday held a mega roadshow in the city, waving at a large, enthusiastic crowd lining up both sides of the route on the road.

PM started his roadshow from the Kempegowda statue at New Tippasandra Road and it will culminate at Trinity Circle.

A nearly 10-kilometre-long roadshow in Bengaluru for the second straight day is expected to boost the BJP’s poll prospects on the last leg of the campaign for the single-phased elections on May 10.

The huge crowds, which lined the streets to catch a glimpse of PM Modi, were also pictured playing musical instruments, including drums.

Earlier, on Saturday, PM Modi held a nearly 26 km roadshow in the city covering nearly 13 constituencies.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also held a mega roadshow in the Belagavi South constituency on Sunday.

A huge crowd of BJP supporters surrounded Amit Shah’s vehicle and escorted the procession. Shah waved and greeted the crowd lined up on both sides of the road to welcome him.

Karnataka will go to polls on May 10 and the votes will be counted on May 13. Campaigning for the 10 May elections in Karnataka is at its peak with multiple rallies, public meetings and interactions across the state. (ANI)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi

BJP’s JAM Initiative Stopped Cong’s Corruption: Modi

Lashing out at the Congress party over corruption, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that since Bharatiya Janata Party’s double-engine government has put a stop to Congress party’s corruption, they have resorted to abusing him.

He said that BJP has ended corruption by bringing Jan Dhan Aadhar Mobile (JAM) and sending money directly to people’s accounts.
Addressing a public meeting in Badami, PM Modi said, “BJP has come with a road map to make Karnataka, the Number-1 state in the country. But, Congress has decided that it will not brush off its old habits, and will make appeasement, foul language and ‘taalabandi’ as their election agenda”.

“They are doing vote bank politics, promising to stop BJP’s welfare schemes and are abusing OBC and Lingayat community and even me,” he added.

Hitting out at former CM Siddaramaiah, the Prime Minister said that the basic facilities had not reached out to the poor in the Bagalkote region.

“Siddaramaiah has stopped campaigning in this constituency because he has understood the wave. But, people should ask him, why the poor people in the Bagalkote region were deprived of all the basic facilities. More than 3 lakh people received tap water from our government. Houses were sanctioned for more than 25000 people. More than 6 lakh people received health cover under Ayushman Bharat. 7 lakh people received benefits of Mudra Yojana,” he said.

He further took a jibe at the Congress party using the “1 Rupee, 85 paise” reference for former PM Rajiv Gandhi.

“All this shows that only a double-engine government can work for the people. Congress party which has an 85 per cent record in taking commission can never work for the people. Former PM Rajiv Gandhi himself accepted that if the centre sanctions Rs 1 for the poor, only 15 paise reach them. It clearly means that the remaining 85 paise was taken off by some people. It was because of this corruption only, that country remained backward for so long.

PM Modi added, “Today, BJP has brought a ‘Trishul’ with Jan Dhan, Aadhar, Mobile. This has destroyed all the old habits of the Congress party. In the last nine years, Rs 29 lakh crore has been transferred in the accounts of medium to small accounts in the country without any corruption. If this would have happened under Congress, as per Rajiv Gandhi’s calculations, Rs 24 lakh crore would have gone in the hands of Congress leaders only. Today, people get impatient incurring a loss of Rs 24,000. Here I have given Congress a loss of Rs 24 lakh crore. So, isn’t it obvious that they would abuse me?”

The Prime Minister further said that the party has been receiving a great response in the state and affirmed confidence in BJp securing the mandate in the upcoming state elections.

“BJP has been receiving a tremendous response from the people of Karnataka. They are turning out in large numbers. Bestowing so much affection is a speciality of the state. It seems people are themselves fighting the election for BJP in the state. This clearly shows that a double-engine government will be formed in the state,” he added.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi also held a mega roadshow in Bengaluru during the last leg of the campaigning for the Karnataka Assembly polls. He is scheduled to hold two mega road shows and four public meetings this weekend, as per the party sources.

Cong Has History Of Appeasement Of Terrorists: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday lambasted Congress over the issue of security and said that the party has had a “history of appeasement of terrorists”.

The Prime Minister said that unlike Congress which had left Karnataka “at the mercy of terrorists” the Bharatiya Janata Party has “broken the back” of terror and appeasement.
The PM was addressing an election campaign rally in Chitradurga in the run-up to the May 10 Karnataka Assembly elections.

Referring to the 2008 Batla House encounter in which two terrorists were gunned down by a police team in their rented address in Delhi’s Jamia Nagar, the Prime Minister took an apparent jibe at the then Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and said that she had “teary eyes” after hearing about the death of the terrorists.

“Congress has a history of appeasement of terror and terrorists. When the Batla House encounter took place in Delhi, then the biggest leader of Congress had teary eyes after getting the news of the terrorists’ killings. When surgical strike and air strike happened, Congress questioned the capability of the forces of the country.

“You have seen in Karnataka how Congress has promoted terror. Congress had left Karnataka at the mercy of terrorists. It is the BJP which has broken the back of terror and has stopped the game of appeasement,” the prime minister said.

PM Modi also “cautioned” the people of Karnataka against Congress and JD(S), which are contesting the upcoming elections separately, and said that both parties are one by “their heart and deed”.

“I want to caution you. The people of Karnataka have to beware of both Congress and JDS. They are two separate parties only to show, but they are one by their heart and deed. Both are dynastic, both promote corruption, and both do divisive politics to divide society. The development of Karnataka is not the priority of both parties,” he said.

The Prime Minister said there is a need to bring back the “double-engine government” back to power and said that the state has to be made a “driving force” of a developed India.

“We have to make Karnataka a driving force and growth engine of a developed India. For accomplishing this, we need to bring back to power, the Double-Engine Government. The BJP has announced a good vision document which has a roadmap to make Karnataka the number one state in the country. It has a blueprint of modern infrastructure, and has impetus on the women empowerment,” he said.

Meanwhile, the prime minister tried his hands at playing a traditional drum instrument.

PM Modi on Monday tweeted: “I thank my friend @BillGates for his words of appreciation. #MannKiBaat reflects the collective spirit of the people of India to make our planet better, something Mr. Gates is also passionate about. The strong resonance with SDGs is highlighted well in the study by @BMGFIndia.”
The tweet was in response to Gates’ post on Saturday, saying, “Mann ki Baat has catalyzed community-led action on sanitation, health, women’s economic empowerment and other issues linked to the Sustainable Development Goals. Congratulations @narendramodi on the 100th episode.”

Indian Americans on Sunday, too, celebrated 100 episodes of PM Modi’s “Mann Ki Baat”.

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar decided to tune in to the programme live with the diaspora in New Jersey at 1.30 am (local time) on Sunday, hailing it as a platform that has “an emotional connect” between PM Modi and the people of India.

“10 years ago if he had mentioned that at 2.10 at night everyone would be assembling at some place and the foreign minister of India would be with you, listening to the Prime Minister of India, none of you would have believed me,” Jaishankar told members of the diaspora.

“You have to understand that PM Modi’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’ has an enormous impact not because the medium is 100 years old, somewhere there is an emotional connect between PM Modi and the people of India,” Jaishankar noted.

Also participating in the event and jointly listening to Prime Minister Modi were India’s Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, and the Consul General of India in New York, Randhir Jaiswal.

The 30-minute program was also broadcast at the United Nations headquarters in New York, again in the wee hours.

Nadda Releases BJP’s Manifesto For Karnataka Polls

Bharatiya Janata Party national president JP Nadda on Monday released the party’s manifesto or vision document for the Karnataka Assembly elections in Bengaluru.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa were also present on the occasion.
In previous manifestoes, the BJP has claimed to have touched every section of society.

In its manifesto for the 2018 Assembly polls, the party had also included cow protection measures in its manifesto.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also campaigning in the last leg of the BJP’s campaign for the Karnataka polls.

He has already conducted a number of rallies and held roadshows, the latest of which was in Mysuru, a traditional JDS bastion, on Sunday.

Considered as a triangular contest between the BJP, Congress and the JDS, all parties are trying hard and leaving no stone unturned while some political leaders have indulged in hurling abuses. The Congress, which fought the last Assembly polls in alliance with the JDS, decided to go it alone this time around.

On Sunday, PM Modi, while addressing an election rally in Kolar, came down heavily on Congress national president Mallikarjuna Kharge over his “poisonous snake” barb at him.

PM Modi said the people of Karnataka will give the party a “befitting reply” to Kharge’s remark in the Assembly elections.

At a campaign rally in Kalaburagi on Thursday, the Congress national president said, “PM Modi is like a ‘poisonous snake’, you might wonder if it’s poison or not. But if you lick it, you are dead.”

Hitting back over the remark, PM Modi said, “The Congress is clearly disturbed over my ongoing fight against corruption. It has even started threaening me. They are saying ‘Modi teri kabar khudegi’ (PM Modi, your grave will be dug). It seems the Congress’s only talking point in these elections is snake poison. They are comparing me to a snake and seeking votes on it. The people of Karnataka are like Lord Shiva to me. I don’t mind being the snake around the necks of people who are like god to me. The people of Karnataka will give them a befitting reply on May 10.”

PM Modi also labeled the Congress as an “outdated engine”.

The counting of votes for the Karnataka Assembly will be held on May 13. (ANI)
